Foundations On Salt Bearing Soils Of Jizan, M. N. Fatani, A. M. Khan Jun 1993

Foundations On Salt Bearing Soils Of Jizan, M. N. Fatani, A. M. Khan

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Jizan city is located on a salt dome surrounded by low-lying flat terrain consisting of silty-sandy soils. Being on the sea-shore, water immigrates to the surface leaving a salt crust on the top surface, which is known as 'Sabkha' soil. This salt bearing (saline) soil and the salt dome affected the foundation performance in the area. Buildings are experiencing foundation problems as a result of the low bearing capacity of the 'Sabkha' soil and the dissolution of the salt rock underneath the footings of the low-rise buildings, causing tilting of such structures. This paper would present the geotechnical aspects of …

Friction Pile Foundations Subject To Regional Subsidence, A. Rico, J. M. Orozco, J. L. León Jun 1993

Friction Pile Foundations Subject To Regional Subsidence, A. Rico, J. M. Orozco, J. L. León

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A load mechanism and its associated displacements for friction piles driven in a soil subject to regional subsidence is presented. The effect of a surficial crust, which is not under consolidation, is analyzed and to avoid pile emersion, a boundary for the piles safety factor is established. Foundations supported on friction piles, where the foundation slab should always be in contact with the supporting soil, is also analyzed. It is proposed to consider that the load transmitted by the foundation slab be equal to the excavated weight and it is suggested that the increase pile-soil adherence with time, should be …

Geocomposites For Foundation Uplift Pressure Control In Impermeable Soils, J. C. Chang, J. Y. Wu

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Mat foundations constructed in impermeable soils with a high groundwater table will experience a substantially high buoyancy force due to hydrostatic pressure. Conventional solutions to this problem are to increase the structural weight or install piles or anchors to counterbalance the uplift. These methods are costly, inefficient, and time-consuming. This paper presents a case study to show an innovated approach by using geocomposites to cope with the uplift in impermeable soils. Uplift pressure relief system consisted of geosynthetic materials was installed for a 14- story office and apartment building. The raft foundation was built at 50 feet below ground surface. …

Ground Movements And Pore Pressure Variation Caused By Epb Shield Tunneling - Shanghai (China) Sewage Tunnel, K. M. Lee, X. Yi, R. K. Rowe

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The observed pore pressures and deformations induced by an earth balance shield used to construct the Furongjiang sewer tunnel in soft saturated ground in Shanghai, China, are briefly described. Continuous records of immediate surface settlements and ground movements were obtained as the tunnel face approaching and moving away from the observation points. A correlation between resulting heave/settlements and driving force is observed. A finite element technique for predicting these pore pressures and deformations is developed. A comparison is then made between numerical results and the results of field measurements and it is shown that there is encouraging agreement between the …

Prediction Of Drilled Shafts Axial Capacities Using Cpt Results, O. M. Alsamman, J. H. Long Jun 1993

Prediction Of Drilled Shafts Axial Capacities Using Cpt Results, O. M. Alsamman, J. H. Long

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Results from nineteen full-scale axial load tests are reviewed to compare methods for predicting axial capacities of drilled shafts using results of Cone Penetration Tests (CPT). The three methods to estimate failure loads are: (1) Nottingham method, (2) Laboratoire des Ponts et Chaussees method (LPC), and (3) the Poulos and Davis method. Comparisons are made to assess the accuracy and dependability of each predictive method. Analyses of results indicate that the LPC method provides the most reliable predictions for axial capacities of drilled shafts in clay.

Remedial Measures To A Building Settlement Problem, A. Sridharan, B. R. Srinivasa Murthy

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A ten storeyed building, built on a subsoil of an onshore marine soil, was observed to be tilting away from the vertical. Extensive field and laboratory investigations were carried out to establish the reasons for the differential settlement causing the tilting. Though, nearly uniform pressure has been achieved at the foundation level, presence of a soft marine clay layer with varied thickness and location has caused the differential settlement. To arrest further increase in differential settlement, micropiling in the zone of higher settlement and additional loading and lowering of water table in the zone of lower settlement have been carried …

Ground Failure And Remedial Measures At A Block Of Flats, I. Stanculescu, A. Chirica

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Thee ground failure presented in the paper, occurred in 1986, in the foundation ground, of a ten storyed block of flats, consisting of Bahlui structured dilatant clay, normally consolidated. The foundation ground rupture, by plastic yielding, begin shortly after an accidental drowning of the basement. Before this accident, the building had not presented any signs of evolutive settlements processes. The paper presents the consolidation measures taken to stop the progressive yielding of the ground beneath the foundations. Results of tests pointed out the dilatant behavior and the sensitivity to moistening of the Bahlui clays, during the shear process.

The rate of settlement response was rapid but proceeded …

Case History Of An Uplift Problem, J. R. Deutekom, R. J. Termaat Jun 1993

Case History Of An Uplift Problem, J. R. Deutekom, R. J. Termaat

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Deformation and related stability problems of dikes in the western parts of Holland were for many years ascribed to creep and excess pore water pressures only. However in the spring of 1988 during a high water period in the river Rhine the so called uplift mechanism was for the first time measured in practice. It was then recognised that in some cases the problems have been caused by the uplift phenomenon. For a few years the pore water pressures and the deformations were observed in a test site. With the results of the observations a procedure was formulated for design …

Development Of Landslide At Csa-Open Mine In Bohemia, P. P. Procházka, J. Vacek Jun 1993

Development Of Landslide At Csa-Open Mine In Bohemia, P. P. Procházka, J. Vacek

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Because of its descriptive properties physical modelling belongs to one of the most prospective means for assessment of behaviour of soils and rocks. Its disadvantage is a poor description of stress fields in the material. This difficulty can be partly avoided by means of mathematical modelling mainly by comparison of both the models. The coupled modelling brings also about new views on the statements of constitutive relations, here following Drucker, Prager, 1952, also Brož, Procházka, 1987, mathematical background e.g. Duvant, Lions, 1972. For more details of physical modelling see e.g. Vacek, 1991, another application of coupled modelling see e.g. Vacek, …

Distress In Hirakud Dam, Orissa, India – Possible Causes And Remedial Measures, B. Ramachandran Jun 1993

Distress In Hirakud Dam, Orissa, India – Possible Causes And Remedial Measures, B. Ramachandran

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Distress has been observed in the above dam, on its right spillway immediately after its completion in 1957. The distress has been intensified in the eighties with development of thin horizontal cracks in the undersluice barrels, gate gallery and adjoining areas at a level 18m above bed. These have all been chiselled, opened up and epoxy grouted; besides with water proof cement. But parallel cracks opened up soon after. Studies in detail carried out by various government organisations point out that rapid placement of concrete in ’55 - ‘56 leading to thermal stress is the main cause. Though some attribute …
