International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This paper presents the design criteria, finite element modeling and actual behavior of a braced sheetpile excavation in Detroit soft clay. Due to the close proximity of existing structures to the excavation, a detailed analysis was performed to design and construct an earth retention system to avoid damage to these structures. The excavation involved a 170 ft by 220 ft area. The maximum depth of excavation was 23.5 ft. The subsurface soil consists of soft to very soft Detroit clay from the excavation level to a depth of 80 ft and has an undrained shear strength as low as 360 …

Behavior Of Deep Excavations Using Sheet Pile Bracing System In Soft Bangkok Clay, Wanchai Teparaksa
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The sheet pile bracing system is the most well-known for excavation work in Bangkok soft marine clay. The sheet pile wall which is defined as flexible wall will show a large significant of lateral deformation and ground surface settlement if the excavation system is carried out without a good quality control. The sheet pile bracing system with fully effective preloading strut system was designed for basement excavation of 11.3 m. deep of Bai Yok Tower II. The results indicate that berm width can reduce the maximum sheet pile wall deflection only at the first three stages of excavation. The fully …

Braced Excavation At The Nipsco Bailly Station Power Plant, J. D. Bray, R. J. Deschamps, Ad. J. Augello, R. S. Parkison
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In July 1991, the intake and discharge pipelines of a major power plant collapsed. A 60-ft. deep excavation adjacent to several structures sensitive to ground movements was required- for remediation. Based on conventional analyses, the estimated factor of safety against base heave was close to 1. 0 for the required excavation, and there was grave concern for damage to appurtenant structures. A viable reconstruction scheme was developed through the integration of finite element analyses and construction monitoring.

Performance Of A Pier Consisting Of Three Sections, Edwin P. Woo, Cetin Soydemir, Thomas K. Liu
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A deteriorated 600 ft. long pier in Quincy, Massachusetts consisting of timber pile supported relieving platform and anchored steel sheet pile bulkhead sections was replaced with a new pier. The majority of the new pier consists of a deadman anchored steel sheet pile bulkhead. Due to the proximity of adjacent structures and another existing pier, two areas along the new pier could not accommodate an anchored bulkhead system. In these two areas, relieving platform and double steel sheet pile wall systems were constructed. Inclinometer data showing horizontal movements in the sheeting during the construction and post-construction periods are presented.

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Construction of a 21-foot wide, 28-foot deep braced excavation in Detroit soft clays has been completed. In order to protect an existing 50-year old tunnel adjacent to the excavation, a semi-rigid, tangent wall earth retention system was constructed to minimize the soil movements. The tangent wall was formed by 118 drilled piers with 42-inch in diameter and 41-foot long. The maximum soil lateral and vertical movements adjacent to the excavation were controlled below a magnitude of 2.0 inches, while bottom of the excavation experienced about 3 inches of heave. This paper presents the design considerations and construction performance of the …

Dynamic Compaction Prepares Supermarket Site, Nathan L. Whetten
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This paper presents a case in which dynamic compaction (DC) was used as site preparation for a proposed supermarket. The site was located immediately adjacent to a steep, 15 ft. high slope leading down to the Hudson River. Test borings revealed subsurface conditions consisting of uncontrolled miscellaneous fill extending 10 ft. below river level. Stability evaluations indicated that the slope was unstable under rapid drawdown conditions, and placement of the supermarket at the crest of the slope further decreased its stability. There were also concerns regarding possible differential settlement of the supermarket due to the variability of the fill. Dynamic …

Development On Florida's Phosphate Mine Lands, W. A. Ericson, L. P. Moore, L. D. Madrid
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A majority of Polk County, in central Florida, has been mined for phosphate in the past. Mining companies use the mined areas to deposit mining wastes such as the tailings sands and highly plastic clay materials that are associated with the beneficiation of phosphate ore. The clays are allowed to consolidate, but often, the resulting solids content or shear strength of the materials is very low even after several tens of years. One such area that was impacted by mining and subsequent clay disposal was to become a mobile home park. The developer did not investigate the subsurface conditions prior …
