Strain Sensitive Coax Cable Sensors For Monitoring Structures, Genda Chen, James L. Drewniak, Huimin Mu, David Pommerenke

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The invention provides increased structural monitoring systems that have sensitive continuous coaxial cable sensors. A preferred embodiment sensor cable of the invention includes an inner conductor, a dielectric jacket, and an outer conductor that is configured to passively deform responsively to strain in an associated structure. The deformation can be aided by the physical structure of the dielectric jacket, the outer conductor, or a combination of both. The deformation translates strain into a measurable change in a reflection coefficient associated with the outer conductor.

Section Properties For Cellular Decks Subjected To Negative Bending, Gregory L. Snow, W. Samuel Easterling Sep 2008

Section Properties For Cellular Decks Subjected To Negative Bending, Gregory L. Snow, W. Samuel Easterling

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

Cellular decks are formed by attaching cold-formed “hat-shaped” deck sections on top of cold-formed steel sheets. The attachment is typically made using resistance spot welds spaced at a specific interval. The void left underneath the deck flutes and above the steel sheet provides a convenient means for the distribution of wiring and data cables throughout building systems. The section properties of cellular decks subjected to positive bending can be determined using the provisions of Chapter B of the 2001 AISI Specification (AISI, 2001). However, the provisions of Chapter B do not apply to cellular decks subjected to negative bending unless …

Flexural Behavior And Design Of The New Built-Up Litesteel Beams, Sivapathasunderam Jeyaragan, Mahen Mahendran Aug 2008

Flexural Behavior And Design Of The New Built-Up Litesteel Beams, Sivapathasunderam Jeyaragan, Mahen Mahendran

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

A new cold-formed steel beam, known as the LiteSteel Beam (LSB), has the potential to transform the low-rise building industry. The new beam is effectively a channel section with two rectangular hollow flanges and a slender web, and is manufactured using a simultaneous cold-forming and electric resistance welding process. Built-up LSB sections are expected to improve their flexural capacity and to increase their applications. They are also likely to mitigate the detrimental effects of lateral distortional buckling observed with single LSB members of intermediate spans. However, the behaviour of built-up beams is not well understood. Currently available design rules based …

Innovative Composite Cold Formed Steel Floor Joist System, D. M. Fox, R. M. Schuster, M. Strickland Aug 2008

Innovative Composite Cold Formed Steel Floor Joist System, D. M. Fox, R. M. Schuster, M. Strickland

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Presented in this paper is a new, unique and innovative composite cold formed steel floor system developed by iSPAN Technologies, called the “iSPAN Composite Floor System”. The joist sections are fabricated by fastening two cold-rolled flange chord elements with cold-driven rivets to a flat web element. This makes it possible to create a section where the flange chord elements can be of a different steel thickness with respect to the web element, resulting in a most efficient structural cross section and numerous design alternatives. The joist sections have lip-reinforced web openings spaced at 4 ft o.c. along the joist length …

Vibration Performance Of Lightweight Floor Systems Supported By Cold-Formed Steel Joists, B. W. Davis, L. Xu

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

A study investigating dynamic characteristics of full-scale floor systems was performed for several laboratory-constructed and in situ floors. Floors were constructed with cold-formed steel joists and designed for residential mid-rise applications. Typical construction details including span, subfloor, topping, strongback and framing condition were varied, and their influence on fundamental frequency, damping ratio and deflection at mid-span compared. Changes in construction details which significantly increased floor mass, regardless of added stiffness, were found to lower the fundamental frequency. Adding a strongback with restrained ends provided a significant increase in fundamental frequency, stiffness and damping ratio. Laboratory tested floor systems were generally …

Analysis And Stabilization Of A Failed Cut Slope In Schist, S. B. Manolopoulou, T. T. Papaliangas, T. C. Dimopoulos Aug 2008

Analysis And Stabilization Of A Failed Cut Slope In Schist, S. B. Manolopoulou, T. T. Papaliangas, T. C. Dimopoulos

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper focuses on the description, analysis and stabilization of a failed cut slope in schist. The slope is located near the top of a hill and was cut for the needs of a new industrial building. A few weeks after the excavation, a slide occurred along the schistosity plane of the slope. The slide was attributed to the effect of water which flooded the slope following an overflow of a water tank located a few meters above the slope crest. For the analysis both the deterministic and probabilistic approaches were carried out, with the input parameters determined from simple …

Case History And Numerical Analysis Of Trench Collapse In Japan, Sahaphol Timpong, Kazuya Itoh, Yasuo Toyosawa Aug 2008

Case History And Numerical Analysis Of Trench Collapse In Japan, Sahaphol Timpong, Kazuya Itoh, Yasuo Toyosawa

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper presents a case history of trench collapse occurred during trench excavation in soft ground. The development of settlement and horizontal displacement, the generation of pore water pressure during the construction and mechanism of trench collapse are investigated by means of centrifuge modeling and numerical analysis. It is found that the combination of centrifuge modeling and in-flight sand hopper can provide dramatic result for simulation of the trench collapse. Based on the results, it is verified that the occurrence of trench collapse is mainly caused by the excessive surcharge load of excavated material stockpiled on top of the trench.

Slope Stability Study Of External Dump Of Sonepur-Bazari Opencast Coal Mine, India — A Case Study, Indrajit Roy Aug 2008

Slope Stability Study Of External Dump Of Sonepur-Bazari Opencast Coal Mine, India — A Case Study, Indrajit Roy

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

India has reached the forefront of the world coal scene, ranking third in the total coal production, largely due to rapid increase in production from its opencast coal mines. But with a very high density of population, India is in a very disadvantageous position in acquiring large tracts of land for open cast coal mining which involves handling of large volume of waste rock overburden, a portion of which is to be dumped outside the quarry in a convenient place considering the safety, environment and economical aspects. This waste material dumped outside the quarry is termed as external dump. This …

The Importance Of Mineralogy And Grain Compressibility In Understanding Field Behavior Of Failures, Abouzar Sadrekarimi, Scott M. Olson Aug 2008

The Importance Of Mineralogy And Grain Compressibility In Understanding Field Behavior Of Failures, Abouzar Sadrekarimi, Scott M. Olson

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In this paper, we examine the role of grain mineralogy and compressibility, sample preparation, and shear strain/displacement levels on the shearing behavior of sands using undrained triaxial and constant volume ring shear tests in an attempt to explain some discrepancies observed between field and laboratory behavior. As expected, preparation by moist tamping can produce specimens that are contractive throughout shear, while counterparts prepared using pluviation exhibit dilative behavior at intermediate shear strain/displacement levels (i.e., after initial yield). However, both triaxial and ring shear tests illustrate that some sands consisting of more compressible minerals can exhibit entirely contractive behavior regardless of …

Considerations On Different Features Of Local Seismic Effect Numerical Simulations: The Case Studied Of Castelnuovo Garfagnana, Savino Russo, Giovanna Vessia, Claudio Cherubini Aug 2008

Considerations On Different Features Of Local Seismic Effect Numerical Simulations: The Case Studied Of Castelnuovo Garfagnana, Savino Russo, Giovanna Vessia, Claudio Cherubini

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Numerical studies of local seismic effects are commonly carried out by means of 1D and 2D simulations performed in order to evaluate amplification effects in terms of acceleration response spectra and amplification factors. Such approaches can be easily compared with prescriptions from technical provisions as Eurocode 8 that lead design activity whenever a poor soil characterization is available. When suitable investigation campaigns and regional hazard studies are undertaken accurate studies on local seismic effects can be developed. As a matter of fact, soil high heterogeneity and variability, input motion features and geometrical irregularities of soil layer boundaries heavily affect seismic …

Design Prediction And Performance Of Piles For Seismic Loads, Vijay K. Puri, Shamsher Prakash Aug 2008

Design Prediction And Performance Of Piles For Seismic Loads, Vijay K. Puri, Shamsher Prakash

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Pile foundations are regarded as a safe alternative for supporting structures in seismic areas. The performance of piles depends on soil profile, pile and earthquake parameters. The soils may also be prone to liquefaction. In non-liquefying soils the shear modulus degrades with increasing strain or displacements. Material damping increases with increasing strain or displacement. Stiffness of single pile and pile groups are needed for different modes of vibration; e.g., vertical vibrations, horizontal sliding in x or y direction, rotation about x or y axis and torsion. Group action is generally accounted for by including interaction factors. Pile response in any …

Seismic Microzonation Studies In The City Of Ragusa (Italy), Salvatore Grasso, Lauretta Spina, Michele Maugeri

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The geotechnical zonation of the subsoil of the city of Ragusa suggests a high vulnerability of the physical environment added to site amplification of the ground motion phenomena. These elements concur on the definition of the Seismic Geotechnical Hazard of the city of Ragusa that should be correctly evaluated, through geo-settled seismic microzoning maps. Based on the seismic history of Ragusa, the following scenario events have been considered: the “Val di Noto” earthquake of January 11, 1693 (M=7.3), the “Etna” earthquake of March 1, 1818 (M=5.9), the 1895 earthquake (IMAX= 7 EMS), the Modica earthquake of January 23, …

Anchored Rcc Diaphragm Wall Coffer Dam For Bisalpur Dam (A Case - Study), Ravindra Gill, Mahavir Bidasaria

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Construction of dam foundation of Bisalpur masonry dam on river Banas was posing a problem due to presence of medium and coarse sand in the river bed. In post monsoon period, though there remains very little surface flow in the river, but ipso-facto entire river flows through 10 to 12 m thick sand bed. Hence RCC diaphragm wall was conceived to play dual role i.e. to cut off the flow through the sand bed and also to act as coffer dam to divert the surface flow in the diversion channel. 60 cm thick RCC diaphragm wall has been constructed and …

In this paper, a case history of a deep excavation in Shanghai, which was adjacent to a historical building founded on 27 m long wooden piles and operating Metro tunnels, is presented. The effects of the excavation on the nearby pile foundation and the existing tunnels are investigated using two-dimensional finite element modeling. The predicted maximum horizontal and vertical displacements of the wooden piles are 15.8 mm and 7.6 mm, respectively. The horizontal and vertical movements of the utility tunnel and Metro tunnel are all less than 10 mm, which satisfies the current design criteria for controlling the deformation of …

Stability Of A Mse Wall Under Bridge Falsework Bent Surcharge, Kumars Zand-Parsa, Kamran Zand-Parsa Aug 2008

Stability Of A Mse Wall Under Bridge Falsework Bent Surcharge, Kumars Zand-Parsa, Kamran Zand-Parsa

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A very long cast in place pre-stressed concrete box girder bridge with tall columns in southern California is under construction. Two of the falsework bents were set on top of an uncompleted 9.5m tall MSE wall back fill. The concern was about the unexpected surcharge load behind the MSE wall during the soffit and stem bridge concrete pour, and the influence of the uniform concentrated surcharge on the wall stability and the bridge as well. The falsework bent load had created unexpected vertical load behind the MSE wall that could decrease the wall stability by generating extra lateral pressure and …

Characterization Of A Weak Rock Mass And Geoengineering Analyses For A Canyon Landfill In Northern California, Dimitrios Zekkos, Julien Cohen-Waeber, Edmund Medley, Chris Hunt, Krzysztof Jesionek

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A case history of extensive 60-m high excavations in a weak rock mass for a canyon landfill in Northern California is presented. The landfill is underlain by the Panoche Formation, a complex series of sandstones, siltstones, claystones, shales and conglomerates, thought to be dominantly turbidites, deposited as sub-sea fan deposits. As part of the design, kinematic analyses were performed, accompanied by two independent approaches used to evaluate the strength of the rock mass. One approach was based on laboratory rock core testing, while the second approach was based on the Hoek and Brown Criterion using mostly field observations. The two …

Evaluation Of Empirical Relationships For Dynamic Compaction In Liquefiable Reclaimed Silty Sand Layers Using Pre/Post Cone Penetration Tests, Hamid Reza Nouri, Hamid Ali-Elahi, Mehdi Jalili, Ehsan Seyedi Hosseininia

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This case history presents an application of Dynamic Compaction of the soil layers susceptible to liquefaction behind the main container quay wall of Shahid Rajaee Port Complex Development (SRPCD), situated on shores of Persian Golf near Bandar-Abbas. The liquefaction of such layers during earthquake results in the great lateral earth pressure as well as the settlement and large horizontal deformation of the main wall and anchor wall. Regarding the extension and the depth of the identified liquefiable layers, the improvement method of dynamic compaction was employed to mitigate the liquefaction destructive effect. Generally, the subsoil liquefiable layers of the SRPCD …

Ground Improvement Of A Beach Structure Complex By Means Of Stone Columns – A Saudi Arabian Case History, Syed Faiz Ahmad

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Saudi Arabian is a vast peninsula with varying surface and sub-surface geology. There are many regions, especially near the eastern and western coasts, where the sub-surface soil is very poor. In these regions ground improvement is inevitable. The case in point is a Beach Structure Complex built along the famous Half Moon Bay Beach of Al-Khobar in the eastern coast of the Kingdom. The geotechnical investigations revealed poor soil condition and suggested use of Stone Columns for improving the ground condition. A total of 3119 Stone Columns were installed under five important buildings by means of Vibro-Replacement Techniques. The performance …

Compaction Grouting System is widely used in densifying loose soils or fill voids caused by sinkholes, poorly compacted fills, and soft ground improvement. Also, it is used in preventing liquefaction, re-leveling settled structures, and using compaction bulbs as structural elements of minipiles or underpinning. But the effects of ground improvement depending on the type of soil must be studied in order to adopt in various soils. In this study, characteristics analysis of the ground improvement and the effectiveness of reinforcement were grasped by this study which shows applied ground by Compaction Grouting System in domestic 6 sites. After Compaction Grouting, …

Loyola College in Maryland is a land-locked University in dire need of increasing its academic space. Working with the Baltimore Development Corporation, Loyola purchased a 52-acre parcel of land within miles of their campus which consisted of three closed landfills. The site was Loyola’s preferred location to construct a state-of-the-art athletic complex because moving their athletic facilities to an off-campus location would allow the expansion of their academic space. The athletic complex includes a home game field for lacrosse and soccer, two practice fields, administrative and maintenance buildings, stadium, and supporting infrastructure. Filling at the three landfills began in 1930 …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper discusses the design, construction, and performance of the support of excavation system used at 300 New Jersey Avenue jobsite. The temporary support of excavation system is more complicated than the typical urban site in Washington D.C. and had to be adaptable to many different and variable conditions surrounding the site. These conditions included support of a six and seven story office building, WMATA’s Red Line Subway tunnel under D Street and the support of the 24 foot wide brick and stone Tiber Creek Sewer, which was built in the late 1800’s to drain a major portion of Washington, …

Two History Cases Of Innovations, E. T. Arshba, V. A. Barvashov, G. V. Vasyukov Aug 2008

Two History Cases Of Innovations, E. T. Arshba, V. A. Barvashov, G. V. Vasyukov

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In late 1970s and through 1980s the Soviet Government and the Communist Party encouraged engineers and scientists to develop innovations, to implement them in order to optimize and to increase the effectiveness of the national economy. “The economy must be economical” was the slogan of this policy. The R@D programs were well funded by the State. The paper describes two failures, linked up with implementation of cost-saving innovations: explosion of a 10,000 m3 liquid ammonia storage tank, and failure of a raft footing on largely spaced piles.

New York City High-Rises On Rock: Uncovering The Unknown Leads To Variable Foundation Solutions, Tony D. Canale, Joel Moskowitz, James L. Kaufman

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Construction of high-rise towers in New York City continues to provide exciting challenges for design and construction teams. Sites are becoming increasingly more difficult to build on as “desirable” locations have long since been developed and developers are constructing on sites that were previously over looked. This paper describes two projects that provided unique challenges to the engineers and contractors. The first site is the New York Times Headquarters Tower. This site appeared to be a fairly straightforward foundation design, but became complicated as the subsurface conditions were uncovered. The second case history is the new Bank of America Tower …
