Effect Of Mix Parameters On Longevity Of Bituminous Mixtures, Clayton Reichle

Masters Theses

"This study was performed to evaluate the effects of varying aggregate sources, aggregate gradations on the stripping and rutting potential of bituminous based plant mixes specified by the Missouri Department of Transportation. The different aggregate combinations included two different aggregate sources (Potosi Dolomite and Jefferson City Dolomite) including two variations for the Jefferson City Dolomite mix to simulate a marginally in-specification mix and an out-of-specification but in-field tolerance mix. The "field" mix simulated the marginal mix where field tolerance of high dust and low binder content were maximized. All three mixes were evaluated for stripping susceptibility using the Tensile Strength …

Distribution And Occurrence Of Escherichia Coli In Water And Sediments At Grand Glaize Beach In Lake Of The Ozarks State Park, Jordan Lee Wilson

Masters Theses

"Public swimming beaches at the Lake of the Ozarks State Park (LOSP) are popular vacationing spots for many Missourians; however, on several occasions Escherichia coli (E. coli) concentrations have exceeded standards set by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR). Exceedances lead to beach closures which not only represent a potential public health threat but are also detrimental to the local economy and the public's perception of the lake's general water quality. In a collaborative effort between Missouri S&T, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the MDNR, an in-depth, two-summer study was conducted which included collection of …

"This study is a continuation of research conducted by Natalia Carey, Anthony Wulfers, and Dr. John Myers under the DHS ALERT Center. Carey investigated the use of polyurea coating systems to mitigate close range blast threats on wall panels. Wulfers continued this by using both polyurea coatings as well as a sacrificial wood fiber fly ash (WF-FA) layer to try to get increased performance. This research was aimed at the study of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) for the use in impact and blast mitigation. There is little information on the performance of UHPC under close range blast loading; therefore it …

Shear And Fracture Behavior Of High Performance Concretes, Mahdi Arezoumandi Jan 2013

Shear And Fracture Behavior Of High Performance Concretes, Mahdi Arezoumandi

Doctoral Dissertations

"Concrete is the most widely used man-made material in the world. Like other materials, it has been improved over time. Nowadays, with continued development of science and technology, a new generation of concretes is produced and is termed high performance concretes. A review of previously published work indicates that very few studies (in some cases none) have addressed the structural behavior of full-scale, high performance concrete elements. This study investigated the shear and fracture behavior of two types of high performance concrete - high-volume fly ash concrete (HVFAC) and self-consolidating concrete (SCC). The HVFAC incorporates up to 70% cement replacement …

Numerical Analyses Of Long Carbon Fiber Reinforced Concrete Panels Exposed To Dynamic Loading, Zahra Sadat Tabatabaei Jan 2013

Numerical Analyses Of Long Carbon Fiber Reinforced Concrete Panels Exposed To Dynamic Loading, Zahra Sadat Tabatabaei

Doctoral Dissertations

"The purpose of this research was to evaluate impact and blast performance of long carbon fiber reinforced concrete experimentally and numerically. Experimental tests were conducted on plain concrete (PC), reinforced concrete, and four different types of long carbon fiber reinforced concrete (LCFRC). The results from each test were then compared to one another. This comparison indicates that adding long carbon fibers to concrete both increases the post-cracking behavior of concrete and decreases the spalls in either an impact or blast test. Among all of the fibers tested, Fiber Type B3 outperformed the other fibers, absorbing more energy during impact. Numerical …

Direct Shear Transfer Of Lightweight Aggregate Concretes With Non-Monolithic Interface Conditions, Dane Michael Shaw Jan 2013

Direct Shear Transfer Of Lightweight Aggregate Concretes With Non-Monolithic Interface Conditions, Dane Michael Shaw

Masters Theses

"This thesis describes the results of a study initiated to examine the influence of concrete unit weight on the direct shear transfer across an interface of concretes cast at different times. This type of interface is common with structural precast concrete connections, such as corbels, for which shear friction design provisions are commonly used. Increasing use of lightweight aggregate concretes prompted this investigation to determine the appropriateness of current shear friction design provisions with respect to all-lightweight and sand-lightweight concrete. The experimental investigation included thirty-six push-off test specimens, each of which was constructed with a cold-joint at the interface shear …

An Experimental Study On Bond Strength Of Reinforcing Steel In High-Volume Fly-Ash Concrete, Trevor J. Looney, Mahdi Arezoumandi, Jeffery S. Volz, John J. Myers

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The production of Portland cement-the key ingredient in concrete-generates a significant amount of carbon dioxide. However, because of its incredible versatility, availability, and relatively low cost, concrete is the most consumed manmade material on the planet. One method of reducing concrete's contribution to greenhouse gas emissions is the use of fly ash to replace a significant amount of the cement. an experimental investigation was conducted to compare the bond strength of reinforcing steel in high-volume fly-ash concrete (HVFAC)-concrete with at least 50 % of the cement replaced with fly ash-with conventional concrete (CC). This study investigated two HVFAC mixes [with …

Influencing Factors On The Dynamic Properties Of Organobentonites, Bate Bate, Susan Burns

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The dynamic responses of soils are important engineering properties, especially for soils with high organic contents, because these soils can underlie critical support structures such as highway bridges or levees. Consequently, the initial tangent shear modulus (Gmax), secant shear modulus ratio (G/Gmax), and damping ratio (D) are important parameters in evaluating the dynamic soil behavior for soils subjected to earthquake, wind, waves, traffic, and equipment vibration. in this study, these dynamic properties of organ bentonites were quantified experimentally using resonant column tests. the results from this study were evaluated in terms of the effect of shear strain, organic content, and …

Effect Of Scc Mixture Composition On Thixotropy And Formwork Pressure, A. F. Omran, Kamal H. Khayat, Y. M. Elaguab

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

High lateral pressure exerted on formwork systems by self-consolidating concrete (SCC) is one of the hindrances for using such highly flowable concrete in cast-in-place applications. Self-consolidating concrete is a complex system that can be made using a wide range of mixture proportioning and often incorporated various chemical admixtures and supplementary cementitious materials. the investigation of the effect of each material ingredient independently on lateral pressure of SCC is not a simple task. in this study, thixotropy is rather used to assess the effect of various mixture parameters on formwork pressure. Thixotropy is determined by the evaluation of the structural buildup …

Numerical Simulation Of Particle-Driven Gravity Currents, Sangdo An, Pierre Y. Julien, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Particle-driven gravity currents frequently occur in nature, for instance as turbidity currents in reservoirs. They are produced by the buoyant forces between fluids of different density and can introduce sediments and pollutants into water bodies. In this study, the propagation dynamics of gravity currents is investigated using the FLOW-3D computational fluid dynamics code. The performance of the numerical model using two different turbulence closure schemes namely the renormalization group (RNG) k-ε scheme in a Reynold-averaged Navier-Stokes framework (RANS) and the large-eddy simulation (LES) technique using the Smagorinsky scheme, were compared with laboratory experiments. The numerical simulations focus on two different …

The present study focuses on understanding the flow dynamics of baffled disinfection contact tanks through the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In particular, we seek to address the key question: for a given footprint of a contact tank with a fixed inlet configuration, how does the hydraulic efficiency of the tank depend on the configuration of internal baffles? The benchmark contact tank geometry in our study is shown in Figure 1. In order to define guidelines for hydraulically efficient baffle tanks, we perform a total of 36 high-resolution three-dimensional simulations to quantify the efficiency of a laboratory scale tank …

Definition Of Common Conventions For Education Of Cfs System Design, Semih Göksel Yıldırım

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

CFS system of which can be used in the field of low rise residentials, are included in industrialised building systems due to installation principles of the system. Widespreading of the usage of an industrialised building system depends on the widespreading of the system design datum. Therefore, education of CFS system design is required in order to increase the system usage. Also, awareness of CFS system in the levels of public authorities and technical staff can be increased by education. The aim of this paper is to develop an education model for CFS system design by using open building concept. The …

Numerical And Experimental Investigation Of Cold-Formed Steel Double Angle Members Under Compression, W. F. Maia, L. C. M. Vieira Jr., B. W. Schafer, M. Malite

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

This paper presents a numerical and experimental study of double angle members connected by batten plates under concentric and eccentric axial compression. The number of batten plates is varied to study the influence on the nominal axial strength. Numerical analyses are able to accurately predict the behavior and strength found in the experiments, except for long columns under eccentric axial compression where the composite section failed in major-axis flexural buckling. Two design hypotheses are compared to the results obtained: (i) non-composite action (no interaction between angles), with only local, flexural, and flexural-torsional buckling considered; (ii) composite action (full interaction between …

Compression-Tension Hysteretic Response Of Cold-Formed Steel C-Stection Framing Members, D. Padilla-Llano, C. D. Moen, M. Eatherton, L. Mcanallen, T. Bruce

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

This paper summarizes results from an experimental program designed to evaluate the tension-compression cyclic axial response of cold-formed steel C-section structural framing members. A new cyclic loading protocol for cold formed steel members is presented that defines the target axial displacement based on elastic buckling parameters. The protocol is used to explore the cyclic response of members experiencing local buckling, distortional buckling, and global buckling deformation. In the experiments, post-bucking energy dissipation was observed along with tension stretching and softening. The quantity of dissipated energy per cycle increased as cross-section and global slenderness decreased. Specimens experiencing local and distortional buckling …

Towards The Design Of Cold-Formed Steel Foam Sandwich Columns, S. Szyniszewski, B. H. Smith, V. M. Zeinoddini, J. F. Hajjar, S. R. Arwade, B. W. Schafer

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

In this paper a design method for the compressive capacity of sandwich panels comprised of steel face sheets and foamed steel cores is derived and verified. Foamed steel, literally steel with internal voids, provides the potential to mitigate many local stability issues through increasing the effective width-to thickness of the component for the same amount of material. Winter’s classical effective width expression was generalized to the case of steel foam sandwich panels. The provided analytical expressions are verified with finite element simulations employing brick elements that explicitly model the steel face sheets and steel foam cores. The closed-form design expressions …
