The Quest For An Unambiguous Parameterization Of Mixing Efficiency In Stably Stratified Geophysical Flows, Benjamin D. Mater, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Estimates of turbulent mixing in geophysical settings typically depend on the efficiency at which shear-driven turbulence mixes density across isopycnals. To date, however, no unifying parameterization of diapycnal mixing efficiency exists due to the variability of natural flows and also due to certain ambiguities that arise from descriptions based on a single parameter. Here we highlight important ambiguities of some common single-parameter schemes in the context of a multiparameter framework that considers the independent effects of shear, buoyancy, and viscosity. Parameterizations based on the gradient Richardson number (Ri), the turbulent Froude number (FrT), and the buoyancy Reynolds number (Reb) are …

Effect Of Weak Magnetic Field On Arsenate And Arsenite Removal From Water By Zerovalent Iron: An Xafs Investigation, Yuankui Sun, Xiaohong Guan, Jianmin Wang, Xiaoguang Meng, Chunhua Xu, Gongming Zhou Jun 2014

Effect Of Weak Magnetic Field On Arsenate And Arsenite Removal From Water By Zerovalent Iron: An Xafs Investigation, Yuankui Sun, Xiaohong Guan, Jianmin Wang, Xiaoguang Meng, Chunhua Xu, Gongming Zhou

In this study, a weak magnetic field (WMF), superimposed with a permanent magnet, was utilized to improve ZVI corrosion and thereby enhance As(V)/As(III) removal by ZVI at pHini 3.0-9.0. The experiment with real arsenic-bearing groundwater revealed that WMF could greatly improve arsenic removal by ZVI even in the presence of various cations and anions. The WMF-induced improvement in As(V)/As(III) removal by ZVI should be primarily associated with accelerated ZVI corrosion, as evidenced by the pH variation, Fe2+ release, and the formation of corrosion products as characterized with X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. The arsenic species analysis in solution/solid phases at …

Splice Performance Evaluation Of Enamel-Coated Rebar For Structural Safety, Genda Chen, Chenglin Wu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This report summarizes the findings and results from an experimental study of vitreous enamel coating effects on the bond strength between deformed rebar and normal strength concrete. A total of 24 beam splice specimens were tested under four-point loading with four parameters investigated: bar size, lap splice length, coating, and confinement conditions. As the splice length increases, the ratio of bond strength between coated rebar and black rebar first increases from 1.0 to a maximum value of 1.44, and then decreases to 1.0. The maximum bond strength ratio corresponds to the near initial yielding of coated rebar. On the average, …

Development Of Bridge Girder Movement Criteria For Accelerated Bridge Construction, Genda Chen, Yi Bao Jun 2014

Development Of Bridge Girder Movement Criteria For Accelerated Bridge Construction, Genda Chen, Yi Bao

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

End diaphragms connect multiple girders to form a bridge superstructure system for effective resistance to earthquake loads. Concrete girder bridges that include end diaphragms consistently proved to perform well during previous earthquake events. However, whether concrete bridges without end diaphragms are definitively inadequate in seismic performance is yet to be answered. The 2010 Chile Earthquake indicated that properly designed bridge girders and their lateral movement stoppers (shear keys) may perform equally well with those with end diaphragms. In this report, a feasibility study on the design of girder bridges without end diaphragms is presented. This study is particularly significant in …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Effective techniques for a nondestructive evaluation of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls during normal operation or immediately after an earthquake event are yet to be developed. MSE walls often have a rough surface finishing for the purpose of decoration and are reinforced with both horizontal and vertical steel bars. Two wide-band microwave inspection approaches were investigated for detecting and evaluating characteristics of materials behind an MSE wall section. The first approach used spot measurements with a wide-band frequency-modulated continuous wave (FM-CW) radar system. While effective to penetrate through mortar blocks in the laboratory, the radar system was found to have …

Utilizing Structural Equation Modeling In The Development Of A Standardized Intervention Assessment Tool, L. E. Voth-Gaeddert, Daniel B. Oerther

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

There are numerous approaches to measuring multidimensional poverty; these include the Human Development Index and the Multidimensional Poverty Index among others [1]. However, a gap in the literature is found when intervention assessment tools are investigated. The idea of creating a standardized assessment tool would allow for a deeper understanding of poverty on a per community basis. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) offers a robust platform in which to establish such a tool. An overview of SEM and several other general approaches to data aggregation are addressed. The notion of a standardized intervention assessment tool is discussed; this is focused on …

Geological storage of CO₂ (GCS), also referred to as carbon sequestration, is a critical component for decreasing anthropogenic CO₂ atmospheric emissions. Stored CO₂ will exist as a supercritical phase, most likely in deep, saline, sedimentary reservoirs. Research at the Center for Frontiers of Subsurface Energy Security (CFSES), a Department of Energy, Energy Frontier Research Center, provides insights into the storage process. The integration of pore-scale experiments, molecular dynamics simulations, and study of natural analogue sites has enabled understanding of the efficacy of capillary, solubility, and dissolution trapping of CO₂ for GCS. Molecular dynamics simulations provide insight on relative wetting of …

Effects Of Tendon Spacing On In-Plane Behavior Of Posttensioned Masonry Walls, Dongun Ryu, Anil C. Wijeyewickrema, Mohamed A. Elgawady, M. A.K.M. Madurapperuma Apr 2014

Effects Of Tendon Spacing On In-Plane Behavior Of Posttensioned Masonry Walls, Dongun Ryu, Anil C. Wijeyewickrema, Mohamed A. Elgawady, M. A.K.M. Madurapperuma

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In-plane behavior of unbonded posttensioned clay brick masonry walls are investigated using detailed finite-element (FE) models. FE models of three walls having different aspect ratios of 1.50, 1.00, and 0.67 are developed. Effects of tendon spacing on in-plane behavior of these walls are investigated using different tendon spacings ranging from 0.61 m (2 ft) to 3.81 m (12.5 ft). In addition, the effects of having different horizontal reinforcement ratios of 0%, 0.1%, and 0.5% on the in-plane behavior of the walls were investigated. The stresses in the tendons are calculated using different approaches, and then the flexural strength of each …

A Unifying Framework For Parameterizing Stably Stratified Shear-Flow Turbulence, Benjamin D. Mater, Subhas Karan Venayagamoorthy Mar 2014

A Unifying Framework For Parameterizing Stably Stratified Shear-Flow Turbulence, Benjamin D. Mater, Subhas Karan Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An alternative framework for parameterizing stably stratified shear-flow turbulence is presented. Using dimensional analysis, four non-dimensional parameters of interest are identified that consider the independent effects of stratification, shear, viscosity, and scalar diffusivity. In the interest of geophysical applications, the problem is further simplified by considering only high Reynolds number flow. This leads to a two-dimensional parameter space based on a buoyancy strength parameter (i.e., an inverse Froude number) and a shear strength parameter. Consideration for the gradient Richardson number allows the space to be divided into an unforced regime, a shear dominated regime, and a buoyancy-dominated regime. On this …

A Comparative Study Of The Mechanical Properties, Fracture Behavior, Creep, And Shrinkage Of Chemically Based Self-Consolidating Concrete, Mahdi Arezoumandi, Mark Ezzell, Jeffery S. Volz Mar 2014

A Comparative Study Of The Mechanical Properties, Fracture Behavior, Creep, And Shrinkage Of Chemically Based Self-Consolidating Concrete, Mahdi Arezoumandi, Mark Ezzell, Jeffery S. Volz

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study presents the results of an experimental investigation that compares the mechanical properties, fracture behavior, creep, and shrinkage of a chemically based self-consolidating concrete (SCC) mix with that of a corresponding conventional concrete (CC) mix. The CC and SCC mix designs followed conventional proportioning in terms of aggregate type and content, cement content, air content, water-cementitious materials (w/cm) ratio, and workability. Then, using only chemical admixtures, the authors converted the CC mix to an SCC mix with all of the necessary passing, filling, flowability, and stability requirements typically found in SCC. The high fluidity was achieved with a polycarboxylate-based …
