The United States construction industry employed approximately 10.8 million people in 2020. Of these 10.8 million, an estimated 3.3 million, or 30%, were Hispanic workers. On construction job sites, workers are exposed to numerous safety risks, including falls, struck-by incidents, and electrocution. A laboratory test program was conducted to investigate the effects of temperature, solution strength, and applied stress over increasing conditioning durations on cation exchange processes in sodium bentonite (Na-B) geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs). Traditionally, this is done through the use of 6x12 cylinders cured in a lab that are broken at various stages of the curing process. Current state of practice for calculating liquefaction triggering and deformations is outlined in multiple published articles (Seed 1971, Youd et al. 2001, Idriss and Boulanger 2008, National Academies of Sciences 2016, etc.). These methods use a factor of safety analysis with the cyclic stress ratio (the cyclic stress caused by the earthquake normalized by the effective vertical stress in the soil) and the cyclic resistance ratio (the resistance of the soil normalized by the effective vertical stress in the soil). Harmful algal blooms (HABs) can be detrimental to ecosystems, human health, and economies. The low levels of phosphorus remaining in the effluent of municipal wastewater treatment plants can contribute to HAB formation. To achieve more complete phosphorus removal, an effluent treatment method has been proposed that uses phosphorus-deprived, filamentous microalgae to quickly assimilate soluble phosphorus to low concentrations. I also analyzed the effects of storm surge and river flow on extreme events to better understand how these events originate and vary spatially and in time.
