CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
It is recognised that structural design efficiency in domestic and similar structures can be improved when the composite behaviour and contribution of all materials in the permanent structure can be fully recognised in the structural design of the frame. The ability to achieve this Improvement is currently limited by the need 10 rely on empirical test results for standardised building elements when considering the composite behaviour of the entire structure. The existing test methodology for determining the shear strength of plasterboard lined steel stud walls leads to an excessively conservative design of the complete structure. Since the test configuration is …

Shear And Combined Bending And Shear Behavior Of Web Elements With Openings, Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu, Ming-Yang Shan
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this phase of the research project has been to investigate the behavior of a single web with web openings when subjected to either a constant shear force or a combined shear force and bending. The literature indicates that the main parameter that appears to effect the shear capacity is the ratio of web opening depth to web depth, a/h. Thus, the objective for this phase of the investigation was to experimentally determine the shear strength, and compare the tested shear strength with the computed shear strength as given by the AISI Specification for solid webs. The …

Design Of Automotive Structural Components Using High Strength Sheet Steels Mechanical Properties Of Materials, Chi-Ling Pan, Wei-Wen Yu
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
INTRODUCTION It is well known that the material properties of steels and the strengths of cold-formed steel members are affected by strain rate. Therefore, the research project sponsored by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) at the University of MIssouri-Rolla during the period from January 1988 through December 1991 was concentrated on a study of the effect of strain rate on mechanical properties of sheet steels and the structural behavior and strength of cold-formed steel members subjected to dynamic loads. Because the previous UMR studies were limited only to the structural members such as stub columns and beams which …

The Effect Of Flange Restraint On Web Crippling Strength, Bhavnesh H. Bhakta, Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
PREFACE When considering the web crippling strength of a cold-formed steel member, the current edition of the AISI Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members does not distinguish between the behavior of a member having its flanges attached to a support member, and a member not attached to its support. To enhance the industry and design professional's understanding of web crippling, a pilot study was initiated at the University of Missouri-Rolla to explore the influence of flange attachment. The financial assistance for this research was provided by the Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA) and the American Iron and …

Bulletin No 4131- Electric Fencing, Dean Maughan
Bulletins 4000 -
Fencing has always been an integral part of our agricultural system. We need fences for stock control and pasture management. Traditionally, fences have been strong and robust physical barriers. The strength and height of the fence kept domestic animals confined. For many years, conventional fences have served the farmer well. However because returns from livestock over the past ten years have been variable and because of the current cost/ price squeeze, electric fencing, as a cheaper form of fencing, has gained popularity.

The behaviour of steel stud backup wall panels subjected to lateral loads was investigated experimentally and analytically. In addition, various steel stud to track connections were investigated experimentally.
The experimental work consisted of the fabrication and testing of 109 steel stud to track connections. Thirty-two full size steel stud backup wall panels were also tested. Some of the panels were braced with various types of commonly used steel bridging while others were braced with gypsum board sheathing or Styrofoam SM insulation. Twelve beam tests were also performed in order to establish the flexural bending capacity of the steel studs tested. …

Illustrative Examples Based On The Asce Standard Specification For The Design Of Cold-Formed Stainless Steel Structural Members, Shin-Hua Lin, Wei-Wen Yu, Theodore V. Galambos
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
PREFACE During the past four years, two methods were developed for the design of stainless steel structural members at the University of Missouri-Rolla with consultation of Professor T. V. Galambos at the University of Minnesota. One of the methods is based on the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) and the other is based on the allowable stress design (ASD). Both design methods are now included in the new ASCE Standard 8-90, Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Stainless Steel Structural Members. At the September 21, 1990 meeting of the Control Group of the ASCE Stainless Steel Cold-Formed Section Standards …

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this research project has been to investigate the flexural behavior of C-shaped members with web openings. Three common industry standard C-sections have been studied as summarized in the First and Second Progress Reports. To date two testing sequences have been completed. Test sequence No.1 investigated sections with web openings fabricated from nominally low yield strength material. Test sequence No.2 examined sections both with and without web openings. Specimens in test sequence No. 2 have nominally higher yield strengths. This report summarizes the test procedure and results of the research to date.

INTRODUCTION It has long been recognized that material properties and stress-strain relationships of sheet steels can be influenced by the strain rate. A considerable amount of theoretical and experimental research have been undertaken in the past to study material properties and the behavior of structures under dynamic loads and impact loads. In view of the fact that in the current AISI Automotive Steel Design Manual 1, the design criteria for effective design width are based on the test results under static loading condition, the objective of this investigation was to study the validity of these effective design width formulas for …

Tensile Strength Of Welded Connections, Wei-Wen Yu, Roger A. Laboube
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
PREFACE The tensile strength of an arc spot weld is given only limited attention in the current edition of the AISI Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members. To broaden the design engineer's understanding of the behavior of arc spot welds, and to expand the specification's application for arc spot welds, the American Iron and Steel Institute, in 1989, initiated a research study at the University of Missouri-Rolla. The UMR research consisted of a comprehensive literature review, and experimental study which comprised of over 260 individual connection test specimens. The test specimen selection enabled the investigation of the …

The Edge Strength Of Annealed And Heat-Strengthened Glass, Gregory P. Sallee
Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)
Sadly, up until now, very little research has been conducted in the field of glass window strength. The purpose of this research, therefore, is to explore the topic of glass window strength such that we might offer some conclusive evidence as to the probable in-situ performance of structural windows. Our intention is to examine the specific phenomenon of thermally- induced stress and its effect on glass strength. J. G. Croll explains the existence of this well-documented problem. "Whenever a structure is subjected to a varying temperature distribution, or where it is prevented from free expansion, stresses will be induced that …

Evaluation Of Film Coated Window Glass Subjected To The Effects Of Windstorms, Ronald B. Shankland Jr.
Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)
The harm incurred by structures, equipment, and people due to window unit failure during a windstorm is drastically reduced if the glass remains in the frame until the storm has subsided.
There are basically two types of window glass used in curtain wall cladding systems: heat treated and annealed. Heat treated glass is tempered during its manufacture so that it retains residual surface stresses in the range of 3500 psi to 10,000 psi, or more. Annealed glass is cooled very slowly under controlled conditions in order to remove undesired internal stresses (Reznik, 1987). Also known as float glass, annealed glass …

Effect Of Flange Restraint On Web Crippling Strength, Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu, Bhavnesh H. Bhakta

INTRODUCTION The web crippling limit states equations given in the AISI Specification were primarily developed based on the results in which the flange was not attached to the support beams. This may not accurately represent field practice, since flanges are typically fastened by bolts or welds to their support beam. Due to these fasteners, the Specification equations may be underestimating the web crippling strength of the member. Therefore, a pilot study was proposed to study the behavior of webs, and the load carrying capacity of the webs with restrained flanges.
