Governing Yield Modes For Common Bolted And Nailed Wood Connections, Brian J. Tucker, David Pollock, Kenneth J. Fridley, Jeffrey J. Peters Jan 2000

Governing Yield Modes For Common Bolted And Nailed Wood Connections, Brian J. Tucker, David Pollock, Kenneth J. Fridley, Jeffrey J. Peters

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Connections in wood structures are important when designing for ductility. The 1997 Uniform Building Code has taken this into consideration when designating wind and earthquake load duration factors for connections. Factors of 1.6 or 1.33 may be applied to the connection strength, depending on the type of yield mode exhibited by the connection, which may be determined from the yield limit equations supplied in the National Design Specification for Wood Construction (NDS). The NDS provides the designer with multiple tables containing capacities for various common connections. Unfortunately, yield modes are not published along with tabulated capacities. Therefore, the designer must …

Influence Of Hydration Temperature On Durability And Mechanical Property Performance Of Prestressed And Precast High-Performance Concrete Beams, John J. Myers, R. L. Carrasquillo

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Concrete technology has continued to advance throughout the years to meet the demands of designers and innovative structural systems. With the advent of high-performance concrete (HPC), which contains large amounts of cementitious materials, the investigation of the impact of concrete temperature development during hydration on concrete performance is of keen interest. Match-curing technology was used to investigate the influence of concrete temperature development during hydration on the mechanical and material property performance of prestressed and precast HPC beams. These members were fabricated for use in two recently constructed HPC bridges in Texas. The investigation was conducted in conjunction with the …

Defects In Reinforced Concrete Due To Environmental Conditions And Concrete Treatment: A Case Study At The University Of Dar Es Salaam, A. Rubaratuka Dec 1999

Defects In Reinforced Concrete Due To Environmental Conditions And Concrete Treatment: A Case Study At The University Of Dar Es Salaam, A. Rubaratuka

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Concrete is produced by mixing together cement, water and aggregates (i. e. sand and coarse aggregates) in specified proportions. It can do well with compressive forces but it is very weak under tensile forces. To overcome this problem, steel reinforcement are normally added to produce reinforced concrete which can also withstand tensile forces. Experience shows that environmental conditions may have a negative impact on the durability of reinforced concrete structures resulting in development of defects if not properly assessed and appropriate measures adopted to arrest the same at the design and construction stages.

The severity of damages for the investigated …

Evaluation Of Extreme Wind Speeds In Relation To The Design Of Coastal Structures In Tanzania, Alfonse Dubi Dec 1999

Evaluation Of Extreme Wind Speeds In Relation To The Design Of Coastal Structures In Tanzania, Alfonse Dubi

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Five distribution functions, FT-I and Weibull with the exponent k = 0.75, 1.0, 1.4 and 2.0 respectively, have been applied to 25-year wind data collected between 1972 and 1996 at Tanga, Dar Es Salaam, Zanzibar and Mtwara Meteorological stations. One maximum value for every year from the full data record was drawn to constitute the annual maxima series for each station. For each of the stations, 2-, 50- and 100-year return wind speeds with corresponding 90% confidence intervals were computed. The distribution functions were fitted to the data by the Least Squares Method. Results from the study show that FT-I …

The Behaviour Of Reinforced Block-Work Walls In Axial Tension, Laurent Shirima Dec 1999

The Behaviour Of Reinforced Block-Work Walls In Axial Tension, Laurent Shirima

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Reinforced blockwork with horizontally laid reinforcing bars is used for walls in liquid retaining structures in developing countries. This is the case where, the level of technology in terms of skills and equipment is not in a position to allow successful construction of reinforced concrete walls. Blockwork walls are very sensitive to cracking which cannot be prevented by reinforcement. The major problem for designers is the behaviour of such walls in tension caused by hydrostatic pressure of the stored liquid. This paper reports results of a research work to study the behaviour of reinforced blockwork walls in tension. It was …

Application Of Vibrational Techniques In Determination Of Dynamic Properties Of Agricultural Products-State Of The Arton Of Vibrational Techniques In Determination Of Dynamic Properties Of Agricultural Products-State Of The Art, Silas Kajuna

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Vibration is one of the techniques employed in the determination of dynamic properties of fruits and vegetables. It entails generation of a mechanical or acoustic vibrational signal which is propagated through the flesh of the agricultural material. A transducer is either attached or held close to the specimen to monitor the propagation of the signal through the specimen. The manner in which the signal is transmitted through the material is analyzed, and the dynamic properties of the specimen which relate to its firmness or its internal being are derived. The technique has been around for the past 30 years or …

Design Of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members And Connections For Cyclic Loading (Fatigue), Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

PREFACE Fatigue in a structural steel member or connection is the process of initiation and subsequent growth of a crack under the action of a cyclic or repetitive load. The fatigue process commonly occurs at a stress level less than the static failure condition. Although fatigue design guidelines have existed for hot-rolled steel structural members and connection, there have been no generally accepted design guidelines in the AISI Specification for addressing fatigue in a cold-formed steel member or connection. Therefore, the intent of the research reported herein was to develop general design rules for design of cold-formed steel members and …

Destructive And Non-Destructive Testing Of Bridge J857 Phelps County, Missouri : Strengthening And Testing To Failure Of Bridge Decks, Tarek Alkhrdaji, Antonio Nanni, Genda Chen, Michael G. Barker Apr 1999

Destructive And Non-Destructive Testing Of Bridge J857 Phelps County, Missouri : Strengthening And Testing To Failure Of Bridge Decks, Tarek Alkhrdaji, Antonio Nanni, Genda Chen, Michael G. Barker

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Concrete bridges are conventionally reinforced with steel bars and/or prestressed with steel tendons. When subjected to aggressive environments, corrosion of the reinforcing and prestressing steel occurs and eventually leads to premature structural deterioration and loss of serviceability. In addition, the increasing service loads as well as seismic upgrade requirements result in a need to strengthen many of these bridges. The use of externally bonded steel plates for flexural and shear strengthening of concrete members is well established. However, corrosion related problems have limited the use of this technique for outdoor application. Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are corrosion resistant and …

Bolt Bearing Behavior Of Engineered Wood Composites, Stephen J. Carstens, David Pollock Jan 1999

Bolt Bearing Behavior Of Engineered Wood Composites, Stephen J. Carstens, David Pollock

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

The goal of this research was to gain a better understanding of the bolt bearing behavior of engineered wood composites made from yellow poplar lumber. Lumber specimens included in this study were laminated veneer lumber, strandbased lumber, yellow poplar lumber, and Douglas-fir larch lumber. Testing followed the half-hole and full-hole configuration as set forth in ASTM Standard D5764 (1998).

In a previous study by Wilkinson (1991), a strong correlation was shown between bearing strength perpendicular to grain and bolt diameter. This study supports Wilkinson's finding for bearing strength perpendicular-to-grain based on the half hole test configuration. Other findings in this …

Determination Of The Tensile And Shear Strengths Of Screws And The Effect Of Screw Patterns On Cold-Formed Steel Connections, Marc Allen Sokol, Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu Dec 1998

Determination Of The Tensile And Shear Strengths Of Screws And The Effect Of Screw Patterns On Cold-Formed Steel Connections, Marc Allen Sokol, Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

PREFACE This report summarizes two studies related to the design of cold-formed steel connections. The study topics included the creation of a test standard for determining the strength of a screw, and the determination of the strength of a screw connection. A standard test protocol does not exist for determining the strength of a screw. Today, manufacturers use test protocols developed for their products. Thus, there is no consistency in defining the structural performance of a screw. A test standard has been developed. The standard used as its model the American Society of Testing and Material's F 606, Standard Test …

Buckling Mode Interaction In Cold-Formed Steel Columns And Beams, C. Jiang, Viorel Ungureanu, J. Michael Davies Oct 1998

Buckling Mode Interaction In Cold-Formed Steel Columns And Beams, C. Jiang, Viorel Ungureanu, J. Michael Davies

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The buckling behaviour of cold-formed steel columns and beams is far from simple. The three generic forms of buckling, namely local buckling, distortional buckling and overall buckling, generally have different wavelengths and are usually restricted to different span ranges. However, there is also the possibility of interaction among these buckling modes at a certain span length. Thus, local plate buckling and distortional buckling may occur together with lateral-torsional buckling in such a way that they all have an influence on the ultimate load carrying capacity of a member. The influence of local buckling is taken into consideration in design codes …

Spacing Of Connections In Compression Flanges Of Built-Up Cold-Formed Steel Beams, Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu, Michael L. Jones Oct 1998

Spacing Of Connections In Compression Flanges Of Built-Up Cold-Formed Steel Beams, Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu, Michael L. Jones

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Built-up cold-formed steel sections may offer greater economy in building construction. Typical built-up sections are cellular decks or door and window header beams. A research project was initiated to determine if the current spacing criteria outlined in Section D1.2 of the AISI Specification accurately predicted the capacity of built-up sections with the cover plate in compression. This study showed that criteria No.2 of the AISI Design Specification spacing criteria is restrictive when applied to built-up cross sections in bending. All test sections continued to carry additional load after the cover plate buckled. The tests showed that as the spacing of …

Bending Tests Of Hat Sections With Multiple Longitudinal Stiffeners, V. V. Acharya, R. M. Schuster Oct 1998

Bending Tests Of Hat Sections With Multiple Longitudinal Stiffeners, V. V. Acharya, R. M. Schuster

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

This paper is the first in a series of articles that report findings of the authors investigation into the behavior of cold formed steel hat sections in bending with multiple intermediate longitudinal stiffeners. Presented in this paper is the test program that was carried out at the University of Waterloo as part of a two year research program. It is known that sections with multiple intermediate stiffeners can fail either in a local sub-element buckling mode, or alternatively, can experience an overall plate buckling mode of failure. Although both failure modes were examined, the main objective was to develop a …

Samples were installed at four atmospheric exposure sites: Middletown, OH, Daytona Beach, FL, Monroeville, PA, and Halifax, NS, Canada. Three different orientations were utilized at each of the exposure sites and a variety of building panel features were included on …

Experimental Procedures For Stub Column Tests, Y. Pu, M. H. R. Godley, R. G. Beale Oct 1998

Experimental Procedures For Stub Column Tests, Y. Pu, M. H. R. Godley, R. G. Beale

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

In this paper a total of 36 stub columns was tested by two different experimental procedures, namely the FEM and AISI procedures, to investigate the difference in the ultimate load between these procedures. Of these 26 were carried out in the pin-ended condition according to FEM, the rest were in the fixed-end condition according to AlSI specification. It is shown that the failure loads obtained by the two experimental procedures were very close to each other. Both procedures worked well. The AISI procedure is recommended as the standard procedure.

Rotational Stiffnesses Of Semi-Rigid Baseplates, X. Feng, M. H. R. Godley, R. G. Beale Oct 1998

Rotational Stiffnesses Of Semi-Rigid Baseplates, X. Feng, M. H. R. Godley, R. G. Beale

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The paper describes a test procedure to determine the rotational stiffnesses and moment-curvature relationships of semi-rigid baseplates of cold-formed structures. The influence of the modulus of the foundation subgrade on baseplate performance is determined. Increasing the axial load applied to a baseplate is shown to increase the ultimate moment-rotation capacity of a baseplate.

Seismic Design Of Light Gauge Steel Structures: A Discussion, Reynaud Serrette Oct 1998

Seismic Design Of Light Gauge Steel Structures: A Discussion, Reynaud Serrette

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

In a highly competitive and aggressive construction market, designers are always looking for new, proven ways to design safe, economical building structures. This is even more relevant in tract residential construction where a few dollars saved on one detail can affect who is awarded a project. In residential construction, a complete load bearing light gauge steel (LGS) system is now somewhat commonplace in the United States. Architects and engineers who once designed almost exclusively with other conventional materials are now consider LGS as an alternative. Although, it is feasible to make a direct substitution of LGS for conventional wood framing, …
