Seismic Soil-Pile Interaction: Physical Processes And Analytical Models, Sanjeev Malhotra May 2010

Seismic Soil-Pile Interaction: Physical Processes And Analytical Models, Sanjeev Malhotra

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Seismic soil-pile-structure interaction (SSPSI) is a complex process involving several, simultaneously occurring and, sometimes compensating phenomena. The physical processes that occur in the soil when a pile supported structure undergoes earthquake loading consist of pore-pressure generation, ground deformation and subsequent cyclic degradation, strain rate effects and gap-slap mechanism. Modeling these physical phenomena numerically is a challenge. Of the various approaches available in practice, the p-y method for evaluating lateral pile response is by far the most common. However, at present, a consensus has not been established among practitioners on the appropriateness of using p-y curves for post-liquefaction analyses. This paper …

Design Of Bridges Against Seismic Faulting : Methodology And Applications, Ioannis Anastasopoulos, Takis Georgarakos, Rallis Kourkoulis, George Gazetas

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

This paper presents a methodology for design of bridge–foundation systems against seismic faulting. The problem is decoupled in two steps. Step 1 deals with the response of a single bridge pier and its foundation subjected to faulting–induced deformation ; Step 2 deals with the detailed model of the superstructure, which is subjected to differential displacements computed in Step 1. We analyze typical viaduct and underpass bridges, founded on piles or caisson foundations. Piled foundations are found to be vulnerable to faulting– induced deformation. While end–bearing piles cannot really sustain any appreciable bedrock offset, floating piles may perform better, especially if …

Diaphragm Walls Seismic Design According To The Eurocodes, José Matos E Silva May 2010

Diaphragm Walls Seismic Design According To The Eurocodes, José Matos E Silva

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Although one can think that it is very low the probability of a seism occurrence during the execution of an excavation in an urban lot protected by a diaphragm wall curtain, reality shows that whenever a seism occurs in an urban area several diaphragm walls will be affected by it. So it is advisable to consider the seismic action when designing a diaphragm wall curtain. The Eurocodes consider the seismic actions in Eurocode 8 (EC 8) and recommend the use of the Mononobe-Okabe method when dealing with soil retaining structures. The Eurocodes consider the possibility of each European country to …

Discussions On Dynamic Interaction Between Piles And Large Particle Rockfill, Yohsuke Kawamata, Scott A. Ashford

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

A series of full-scale laterally loaded pile tests were conducted at the University of California, San Diego in 2007 in order to obtain a better understanding about pile-rockfill interaction for seismic design of port facilities. The project was composed of three experiments where the cyclic lateral loads were cyclically applied at the heads of the piles fully instrumented using a hydraulic actuator. Comparing the experimental and numerical results, assessments of p-y curves used for current design practice were performed. As a result, it was found that the soil pile springs currently used for design gave much lower lateral resistance than …

Seismic Fragility Analysis For Sheet Pile Wharves — Case Study Of The Hualien Harbor In Taiwan, Yung-Yen Ko, Ho-Hsiung Yang, Cheng-Hsing Chen

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The seismic fragility curves represent the conditional probabilities that the structural damage meets or exceeds the specified damage states at various levels of the ground motion parameters, such as peak ground acceleration (PGA). In this study, the seismic fragility analysis for the sheet pile wharves of the Hualien Harbor in Taiwan was performed. The finite element analysis software PLAXIS was adopted for the nonlinear dynamic analysis. The time histories of several representative earthquake events that actually occurred in Taiwan, including the 1999 Chi-Chi Earthquake, were scaled to various PGA levels as the input motions. Then the seismic responses of the …

Calibration Of Soil Amplification Factors For Real-Time Ground-Motion Scenarios In Italy, Simone Barani, Roberto De Ferrari, Gabriele Ferretti, Daniele Spallarossa

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

This study deals with the calibration of soil amplification factors to be used for generating site-specific, real-time (or quasi real-time) ground-motion scenarios in Italy. To this end, the ground response of 100 soil profiles is studied through 1-dimensional (1D) equivalent-linear numerical simulations. Several real, rock ground-motion time histories, grouped into different peak ground acceleration (PGA) classes, are driven through the models of the soil columns. Soil amplification factors are then calculated using different definitions, either as the ratio of the spectral acceleration at the surface to the spectral acceleration at the rock outcrop or by dividing the (acceleration or pseudo-velocity) …

Earthquake Induced Excess Pore Water Pressures In The Upper San Fernando Dam During The 1971 San Fernando Earthquake, Abouzar Sadrekarimi, Timothy D. Stark May 2010

Earthquake Induced Excess Pore Water Pressures In The Upper San Fernando Dam During The 1971 San Fernando Earthquake, Abouzar Sadrekarimi, Timothy D. Stark

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The excess pore water pressure developed in the Upper San Fernando Dam during the 1971 San Fernando Earthquake has been evaluated in several studies. Almost all of these studies indicate large excess pore pressure ratios developed only in the upstream and downstream shells which are not consistent with the limited deformation of the dam and the piezometer responses during the earthquake. In this paper, the construction and field observations of the behavior of the Upper San Fernando Dam are reviewed and a simple approach involving Newmark’s (1965) and Makdisi-Seed’s (1978) permanent deformation and limit equilibrium slope stability analyses are used …

Vibro Replacement For Liquefaction Hazard Mitigation For Operational Storage Facility In Coronado, California, Usa, Sunil Arora, Lisheng Shao

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Vibro replacement stone columns were installed for soil improvement for the construction of a 20,000-square-foot operational storage facility in Coronado, CA. The soil improvement program was conducted to meet seismic and static performance criteria for spread footings founded on improved soil. CPT testing was conducted before and after stone column construction to verify the vibro replacement program. Comparison between pre- and post-construction CPTs showed remarkable increase in the tip resistance in loose sand layers. Accounting for densification and shear reinforcement, the anticipated post-improvement liquefaction-induced settlement was reduced significantly.

Dynamic Earth Pressures And Earth Pressure Cell Measurements, Yasir Ramzan Khokher, Gopal Madabhushi May 2010

Dynamic Earth Pressures And Earth Pressure Cell Measurements, Yasir Ramzan Khokher, Gopal Madabhushi

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Retaining Wall failures have frequently occurred during seismic events and have therefore been the subject of much research. The pseudo-static force designs, based on the Mononobe-Okabe earth pressure coefficient equations, have been adopted by most current design codes due to its simplicity and ease of use. However, it is clear that there are limitations attached with this approach and more research is required into how the earth pressures develop during seismic events. This paper investigates the seismic behaviour of sheet pile retaining walls using centrifuge testing facilities. In addition to using bending moment strain gauges on the wall, new generation …

Three-Dimensional Stability Analysis Of The Central Rotunda Of The Catacombs Of Kom El-Shoqafa, Alexandria, Egypt, Sayed Hemeda, Kyriazis Pitilakis, Elias Bakasis

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

A three-dimensional numerical model has been proposed of the central Rotunda of the catacombs of Kom El-Shoqafa with its six supporting rock pillars, excavated in sandy oolitic limestone deposit. The model was based on a 3D realistic simulation of the problem geometry. The required input for the analysis (strength and deformability of the rock materials) was derived from laboratory tests and empirical assessments. The rock mass in general is normally widely jointed (> 1 m). In the analysis it is considered as an un-jointed homogeneous medium with low strength. Where 2D analysis fails to model properly the column behaviour, we …

Comparison Of Energies Required To Densify Liquefiable Soil, Russell A. Green, James K. Mitchell May 2010

Comparison Of Energies Required To Densify Liquefiable Soil, Russell A. Green, James K. Mitchell

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The objective of the study presented herein is to compare the energy required to densify loose, liquefiable sand by various techniques and the energy required to liquefy the soil by earthquake shaking. The states-of-practice for performing remedial ground densification and evaluating earthquake liquefaction potential of loose saturated sands have evolved relatively independently of each other. This is in spite of the fact that the inducement of liquefaction is typically requisite for remedial ground densification of sands. Using the energy required to induce liquefaction as a common metric, simple calculations are presented for estimating the mechanical energy required to densify a …

Performances Of Rockfill Dams During Recent Large Earthquakes, Kenji Ishihara May 2010

Performances Of Rockfill Dams During Recent Large Earthquakes, Kenji Ishihara

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

There has been increasingly high intensity of acceleration ever recorded during earthquakes in recent times. In consistence with this trend several characteristics have been unearthed regarding performances of rockfill dams. With due considerations to these, damage features of high rockfill dams during recent earthqukes in Japan and China are briefly introduced herein, together with those previously reported. As an indicator of overall distress to the dams, the crest settlement was taken up and it was shown that the settlement tends to increase up to about 1.5% of the height of the dam with increasing acceleration during earthquakes.

Effects Of Sample Disturbance And Consolidation Procedures On Cyclic Strengths Of Intermediate Soils, Karina R. Dahl, Ross W. Boulanger, Jason T. Dejong, Michael W. Driller May 2010

Effects Of Sample Disturbance And Consolidation Procedures On Cyclic Strengths Of Intermediate Soils, Karina R. Dahl, Ross W. Boulanger, Jason T. Dejong, Michael W. Driller

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Sampling and testing of soils to measure engineering properties, such as monotonic and cyclic undrained shear strengths, requires an understanding of the potential effects of sampling disturbance and the selection of appropriate laboratory testing procedures. For clays, past research has provided insights on how sampling methods and laboratory testing procedures can be used in practice to assess and minimize sample disturbance effects. For sands, past research has shown that conventional tube sampling techniques cause excessive disturbance to the soil fabric, such that subsequent measurement of monotonic or cyclic strengths can be greatly in error and misleading. For intermediate soils, the …

Liquefaction, Screening, And Remediation Of Silty Soils, S. Thevanayagam

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Assessing liquefaction potential, in situ screening, and remediation of non-plastic silty soils are difficult problems. Presence of silt particles among the sand grains in silty soils affects the soil response in each of the above cases in different ways. First part of this paper addresses the effects of silt content on liquefaction resistance, hydraulic conductivity, and coefficient of consolidation of silty soils compared to clean sand. Secondly it addresses the effects of silt content and consolidation characteristics on cone resistance of silty soils and sand. A relationship between normalized cone resistance, liquefaction resistance, and consolidation characteristics is presented. The third …

This paper presents an overview of the principles and practices of seismic microzonation with some case studies in India. India has experienced major damages and loss of life due to earthquakes. Macrozonation map in Indian seismic code IS-1893 is frequently revised soon after a major earthquake in the country. New revision which was published in 2002 after Bhuj earthquake in 2001 contains four macro zones. These zones are based on geology and limited seismology input without considering geotechnical aspects such as site effects and liquefaction. In order to understand the earthquake vulnerability of major urban centers and prepare new zonation …

Cyclic Compression Of Compacted Clayey Sand At Small Cyclic Strains, Mladen Vucetic, Macan Doroudian, David W. Sykora May 2010

Cyclic Compression Of Compacted Clayey Sand At Small Cyclic Strains, Mladen Vucetic, Macan Doroudian, David W. Sykora

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Ten drained cyclic strain-controlled direct simple shear tests were conducted on compacted low-plasticity clayey sand to measure its cyclic compression properties. The soil had 37 % fines, liquid limit of 28% and plasticity index 14. The relative compaction of specimens prior to consolidation and cyclic shearing was between 80 and 90 %. Cyclic compression is expressed as the accumulation of vertical strain with the number of cycles, N. Vertical strain recorded at the end of every cycle, ενc, increased with the cyclic shear strain amplitude, γc, and N. Such behavior is typical and has been obtained …

Constitutive Models Predicting The Response Of Clays Along Slip Surfaces, Constantine A. Stamatopoulos May 2010

Constitutive Models Predicting The Response Of Clays Along Slip Surfaces, Constantine A. Stamatopoulos

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The paper proposes and validates a constitutive model simulating the change of resistance along clay slip surfaces under both undrained and drained conditions. The proposed model is based on (a) the critical state theory and (b) the assumption that the critical state changes once failure is reached, in terms of the further shear displacement. Under undrained conditions, the proposed model simulates the excess pore pressure generation and subsequently the continuous change of clay resistance along the slip surface from its initial value to the peak strength and then at large displacement the residual value measured in constant-volume ring shear tests. …
