Keynote Lecture: Some Recent Developments In The Selection Of Ground Motions For Design, W. D. Liam Finn, A. Wightman
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
This paper describes some recent developments in the selection of ground motions for design; the conditional mean spectrum approach and risk targeted ground motions. The conditional mean spectrum approach is just finding its way into practice and its application to a major dam is presented. Risk targeted ground motions are the basis for the next generation of building codes in the USA. The process of determining these motions is explained. Finally in the context of the retrofit of 800 schools in British Columbia, Canada, a performance based design procedure based on incremental dynamic analysis (IDA), with direct application to geotechnical …
A Practical Model For Advanced Nonlinear Analysis Of Earthquake Effects In Clay Slopes, Mahdi Taiebat, Amir M. Kaynia
A Practical Model For Advanced Nonlinear Analysis Of Earthquake Effects In Clay Slopes, Mahdi Taiebat, Amir M. Kaynia
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Presented in this paper is an effort in providing an advanced yet practical tool with a reasonable level of complexity for modeling of clays in realistic geotechnical engineering problems. SANICLAY model is a Simple ANIsotropic CLAY plasticity model that has been developed by Dafalias et al. (2006). The SANICLAY model provides successful simulation of both undrained and drained rateindependent behavior of normally consolidated clays, and to a satisfactory degree of accuracy of overconsolidated clays. An associated flow rule extension of the SANICLAY model has been employed in the present study, trading simplicity for some accuracy in simulations. The model requires …
An Evaluation Of Ground Vibrations Induced By Heavy Free-Falling Structural Elements, Kwangkyun Kim, Mark J. Carlson, Duhee Park
An Evaluation Of Ground Vibrations Induced By Heavy Free-Falling Structural Elements, Kwangkyun Kim, Mark J. Carlson, Duhee Park
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Ground vibrations generated during a large structural demolition event can be potentially damaging to nearby structures or sensitive equipment. In this paper, an approach for the prediction of the ground vibration induced by a large free-falling heavy weight is proposed based on both measured and collected data. A series of field ground vibration measurements were performed relative to the dynamic motions induced by free-falling heavy structural elements during demolition of a generating plant in the upper Midwest, USA. Using this information and the collected data, correlations between the measured PPV and normalized distance from the impact source with various ground …

Assessment Of Liquefaction/Cyclic Failure Potential Of Alluvial Deposits On The Eastern Coast Of Cyprus, Huriye Bilsel, Goknur Erhan, Turan Durgunoglu
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
The main objective of this paper is to evaluate liquefaction potential and cyclic failure of subsoils of Tuzla area located on the eastern coast of Cyprus. The in-situ tests of cone penetration test (CPT) and standard penetration test (SPT) were used for site specific evaluation of liquefaction potential. Index properties and undrained shear strength (su) were used to assess cyclic failure potential of fine-grained soils. Liquefaction potential index (LPI) was evaluated based on the calculated factor of safeties for each CPT location. Sensitivity of soils was indirectly estimated from liquidity index (LI). The samples tested displayed high sensitivity …

Comparison Of Measured And Estimated Shear Wave Velocities In A Seismically Active Area (Erbaa, Turkey), Muge Akin, Steven L. Kramer, Tamer Topal
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Shear wave velocity (Vs) is an important parameter for the design of geotechnical works in seismically active areas. The Vs value commonly reflects geological information and engineering properties such as stiffness and density. It is also an important parameter of soil for design and site response purposes. As a part of a microzonation study, field tests performed in Erbaa, Turkey were evaluated to obtain shear wave velocity profiles. The study area, Erbaa, is located on the eastern segment of seismically active North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) where a catastrophic earthquake occurred in 1942. In addition, several earthquakes …
Cyclic Response Of Reconstituted Low Plasticity Silt, Selman Sağlam, B. Sadık Bakır
Cyclic Response Of Reconstituted Low Plasticity Silt, Selman Sağlam, B. Sadık Bakır
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Foundation failures observed over saturated silt-clay mixtures during past earthquakes clearly indicate the need for a profound understanding of the behavior of such soils under seismic loading. Although the mechanisms dominating the response of fine grained soils under seismic loading are known to be different from those of sandy soils, the behavior of low plasticity silt and clay is still under discussion. An experimental research program, still in progress, has been undertaken to investigate the cyclic behavior of low plasticity fine grained soils for developing useful guidelines for the assessment of seismic response. Samples of low plasticity silt, initially consolidated …

Determination Of Small Strain Modulus And Degradation For In-Situ Weathered Rock And Old Alluvium Deposits, Erin Leung, Jack Pappin, Raymond Koo
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
The small strain shear modulus (G0) and the degradation of shear modulus (G/G0) with increasing magnitude of shear strain are important soil properties required for the evaluation of site response due to earthquake effects. While these properties are well established for geologically recent alluvial sand and clay materials, published data on the properties of materials derived from in-situ rock weathering and ancient alluvial deposits are limited. This paper presents the results of laboratory testing on completely decomposed granite and tuff in Hong Kong, and weathered Jurong Siltstone and Old Alluvium in Singapore. The small strain shear …

Dynamic Properties Of Rubber Specimens, B. N. Madhusudhan, Jyant Kumar
Dynamic Properties Of Rubber Specimens, B. N. Madhusudhan, Jyant Kumar
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Resonant column and bender element tests were conducted on rubber specimens to study their dynamic properties, namely, shear modulus (G), damping ratio (D) and Poisson’s ratio (ν). It was found that similar to soil specimens, with an increase in strain level, the shear modulus of rubber decreases continuously whereas the damping ratio increases. The tests were also carried out to find the effect of confining pressures on the rubber specimens. It was observed that for the rubber with the lesser hardness, there was a slight increase in the shear modulus and a decrease in the damping ratio values as the …
Dynamic Properties Of Sand In Constant-Volume And Constant-Load Tests, F. Jafarzadeh, H. Sadeghi
Dynamic Properties Of Sand In Constant-Volume And Constant-Load Tests, F. Jafarzadeh, H. Sadeghi
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Constant-volume and constant-load tests were performed on Babolsar and Toyoura sands by using a modified SGI cyclic simple shear device which provides the capability of back pressure saturation. All tests were shear strain controlled and conducted under different values of relative density, vertical effective stress and shear strain amplitude. Results revealed that Dr, σ′v and γ affect shear modulus and damping ratio under both constant-volume and constant-load conditions in similar ways except the shear strain amplitude which has no important influence on damping of constant-volume tests. The effects of Dr, σ′v, γ and …
Evaluation Of Liquefaction Potential Of Soil By Down Borehole Method, Sumit Ghose, Ambarish Ghosh
Evaluation Of Liquefaction Potential Of Soil By Down Borehole Method, Sumit Ghose, Ambarish Ghosh
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
The procedure used in this research work for evaluation of liquefaction potential due to earthquake is by correlating the cyclic stress ratio(CSR) and the cyclic resistance ratio(CRR) obtained from standard penetration test and shear wave velocity. Shear wave velocity in the different layers of soils have been determined by the use of down borehole instrument. P- and S-wave velocity data of nearsurface soils (upper 21 m) are analyzed and correlated to depth and sedimentological properties. The results show that the S-wave velocity is much more sensitive to changes in lithology and mechanical properties than the P-wave velocity, which is characterized …
Failure Of Saturated Sand In Non-Symmetrical Cyclic Loading, J. Yang, H. Y. Sze
Failure Of Saturated Sand In Non-Symmetrical Cyclic Loading, J. Yang, H. Y. Sze
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Extensive experimental studies have been focused on the cyclic behavior of saturated sand under free-field level ground conditions when subjected to earthquake loading. In many practical applications involving earth dams, slopes and buildings, however, soil elements are always subjected to initial static driving shear stresses on the horizontal planes. The impact of initial shear stresses on cyclic behavior and strength of sand is not yet fully understood. The focus of the present study is placed on the initial shear impact on the failure mechanisms of saturated sand varying from loose to dense state. Three distinctly different cyclic failure patterns have …

Liquefaction Studies Of The Solani Sand Reinforced With Geogrid, Swami Saran, B. K. Maheshwari, H. P. Singh
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
In this paper, a study on liquefaction resistance of Solani sand reinforced with geogrid sheets is reported. Tests were carried out on shake table (vibration Table) with sand samples prepared at relative density of 25% without and with geogrid sheets. In this investigation biaxial synthetic geogrid sheets having the dimension equal to plan dimension of the shake table tank were used in three different combinations of 3 layers, 4 layers and 5 layers at different depths within the sand sample. The liquefaction parameters such as maximum pore water pressure (Umax), maximum pore water pressure built up time (t …

Insar Technique To Allocate Land Subsidence In Karaj And Tehran (Shehriar, Waraminand Djadjroud) Areas, Jafar Najihamodi, Ramin Sadeghi
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Aquifer and hydro system compaction is a worldwide phenomenon, where there is a sudden sinking or gradual downward settling of the earth's surface with little or no horizontal motion. This phenomenon is noticed to take place in many countries, among which is Iran. Water well casing and installations in areas such as Hamedan , Kerman, Meshhed, Tehran and others seem to rise into the air, or some times to produce fissures in the sediments and/or showing sinkhole in carbonated rocks. Soil compaction and / or land subsidence could cause damages to surface and subsurface urban installations. UNISCO was interesting in …
Procedure To Evaluate Liquefaction-Induced Lateral Spreading Based On Shear Wave Velocity, Fred (Feng) Yi
Procedure To Evaluate Liquefaction-Induced Lateral Spreading Based On Shear Wave Velocity, Fred (Feng) Yi
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Evaluation of liquefaction-induced lateral spreading is very important for the design of structures located on gently sloping ground and with relatively shallow groundwater. Extensive research has been performed on the calculation of liquefaction-induced lateral spreading based on the standard penetration test (SPT) and cone penetration test (CPT) data by various researchers (Bartlett and Youd 1992, 1995, Rauch, 1997; Zhang et al., 2004; Idriss and Boulanger, 2008). However, few published papers can be found that address the calculation of liquefaction-induced lateral spreading based on shear wave velocity. This paper presents a procedure to evaluate liquefaction-induced lateral spreading directly based on shear …

Seismic Behavior Of Nailed Soil Massifs, V. A. Barvashov, Ch. A. Dzhantimirov, I. M. Iovlev, P. V. Kharlamov, S. A. Rytov
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Soil nailing technology can be successfully applied to strengthen natural soil massifs in seismic regions, provided adequate analysis is available. Conventionally, the design of soil nailing is performed iteratively: firstly parameters of nailing and their distribution are assigned, the safety factor of the nailed massif is calculated, if its value is less than 1 then nailing parameters are reassigned, etc. Such “trial and error” approach is laborious and especially so, because different types of ULSs shall be analyzed. The method, discussed in the paper, is based on assumption that the effect of nailing in soil with internal cohesion c=c(x,y) could …
Small Strain Properties Of Sands With Different Cement Types, Luling Yang, Lynn Salvati
Small Strain Properties Of Sands With Different Cement Types, Luling Yang, Lynn Salvati
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
This research examines the small strain properties of Ottawa, Monterey and Michiana sands cemented in the laboratory with two different cementing agents using flush mounted transducers, bender elements, and resonant column tests. Samples cemented with higher strength cementing agents and higher cement contents had higher maximum shear modulus values and greater nonlinearity in the shear modulus reduction and damping curves. Although confining pressure is a significant factor for the small strain stiffness of uncemented sands, it did not affect the maximum shear modulus or the shear modulus reduction curves of the cemented sands tested. The density of the cemented samples …

The Universal Void Ratio Function For Small Strain Shear Modulus, Man T. Bui, C. R. I. Clayton, Jeffrey A. Priest
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Small strain shear modulus, Gmax, is a key parameter representing the small strain response of soils under seismic load. It is also an important parameter in design of foundations where only small deformation takes place. It is recognised that Gmax is significantly influenced by void ratio. The influence of void ratio on Gmax of a soil has been taken into account by using an empirical void ratio function, F(e), and various forms of F(e) have been proposed. However, each F(e) can only be applied for a given soil within a limited void ratio range. There was …

Multi Channel Analysis Of Surface Wave (Masw) Testing For Dynamic Site Characterization Of Delhi Region, D. Neelima Satyam, K. S. Rao
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
After the Bhuj earthquake the national capital region of Delhi attracted major attention of several scientific studies in the recent times. Since Delhi falls in zone IV (IS 1893: 2002) with high seismic activity, there is a great need for site characterization and seismic hazard mapping of the area. Multi Channel Analysis of Surface Wave (MASW) tests were done in Delhi at 118 sites in predefined grids of 2kmX3km each. Shear-wave velocity, VS, is an important parameter for evaluating dynamic behavior of soil. This test carried outdone using 48 channel digital seismograph with 4.5 Hz geophones. Data was analyzed using …

A site investigation campaign using cone penetration test (CPT), dilatometer test (DMT) are carried on alluvial deposits at a site located at Gemlik, Turkey towards the design of a newly planned hot reverse mill structure within the existing Borçelik steel factory. Site is located at the south of North Anatolian Fault that is sheared during 1999 Kocaeli Earthquake. In addition, the site is under the influence zone of another fault line going through the Gemlik Bay. Therefore, prediction of the behaviour of saturated alluvial deposits under a major expected design earthquake of the planned structures is the prime importance in …

Reproduction, By Means Of True Scale Testing, Of The Effects Caused On A Track By High Speed Railway Traffic, Javier Moreno Robles, Vicente Cuéllar Mirasol
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Nowadays, the social importance of the railway transportation is accepted without any doubt, and the levels of comfort and operation quality associated to railways are continuously increasing. The travel times that could be considered allowable in the past century are now obsolete and in order to reduce time “losses”, traffic speeds larger than 300 km/h are being asked for. In order to analyse properly the behaviour of the different layers that make up the railway track structure, the Centro de Estudios y Experimentación de Obras Públicas (CEDEX) of the Ministerio de Fomento, Spain, has built a large facility (5 x …

In this study an attempt has been made to develop correlation between standard penetration test (SPT) N values and low strain shear modulus (Gmax). The field experiments of Multichannel Analysis of Surface Wave (MASW) are carried out at 38 locations close to boreholes having Standard Penetration Test N values and in-situ density. These experimental data were generated and used for seismic microzonation of Bangalore, India. In-situ densities of subsurface layers were obtained from undisturbed soil samples collected from the boreholes. Shear wave velocity (Vs) profile with depth were obtained for the same locations or close to the boreholes …

Centrifuge Modeling Of The Influence Of Pre-Existing Fractures In Multilayered Soils On Ground Deformations, P. Hu, Y. H. Ding, Q. P. Cai, G. Y. Luo, C. W. W. Ng, Y. J. Hou
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Fault rupture propagation in free fields lays the ground for an understanding of bedrock-soil-structure interactions. Propagation behaviors in dry soil have long been investigated. Localized shear bands have been identified to be the obvious source of failure in dry soils at depth. In addition, numerous subsurface fractures have been found in the field. However, the influence of subsurface fractures in the soil on future seismic faults has received little attention, especially in complex soils. In this study, three centrifuge tests were conducted to investigate the influence of pre-existing fractures on ground deformations in three multilayered soils: three-layered, five-layered and nine-layered …
