Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (Frp) Composites In Retrofitting Of Concrete Structures: Polyurethane Systems Versus Epoxy Systems, Elie El Zghayar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have been of interest to the structural engineering society since the earliest days of FRP composites industry. The use of such systems has been implemented in both new construction and for repair and rehabilitation of existing structures. Since the 1980s, researchers have developed a significant body of knowledge to use FRP composites in infrastructure applications; however, most of this established knowledge was concentrated on the use of traditional epoxy (EP) systems (epoxy matrix FRPs and epoxy adhesives). FRP composites with polyurethane (PU) matrices and adhesives have recently attracted the attention of a few researchers due …

Advisor: Dr. Christopher Douglas Eamon

Major: Civil Engineering

Degree: Doctor of Philosophy

Accurate probabilistic analysis of complex engineering problems with reasonable computational effort is a popular area of research in structural reliability analysis. For probabilistically complex problems such as those involving nonlinear FE analysis; traditional simulation methods often require unfeasibly great computational effort, while low-cost reliability index approaches may lack sufficient accuracy. This dissertation report addresses this issue by developing a simulation-based method referred to as Advanced Failure Sampling (FS).

Vibration Of Steel-Framed Floors Supporting Sensitive Equipment In Hospitals, Research Facilities, And Manufacturing Facilities, Di Liu Jan 2015

Vibration Of Steel-Framed Floors Supporting Sensitive Equipment In Hospitals, Research Facilities, And Manufacturing Facilities, Di Liu

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

Floors have traditionally been designed only for strength and deflection serviceability. As technological advances have been made in medical, scientific and micro-electronics manufacturing, many types of equipment have become sensitive to vibration of the supporting floor. Thus, vibration serviceability has become a routinely evaluated limit state for floors supporting sensitive equipment. Equipment vibration tolerance limits are sometimes expressed as waveform peak acceleration, and are more often expressed as narrowband spectral acceleration, or one-third octave spectral velocity.

Current floor vibration prediction methods, such as those found in the American Institute of Steel Construction Design Guide 11, Floor Vibrations Due to Human …

Life-Cycle Cost Analysis Of Reinforced Concrete Bridges Rehabilitated With Cfrp, Jeffrey L. Smith

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

The deterioration of highway bridges and structures and the cost of repairing, rehabilitating, or replacing deteriorated structures is a major issue for bridge owners. An aging infrastructure as well as the need to upgrade structural capacity for heavier trucks adds to problem. Life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) is a useful tool for determining when the deployment of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite components is an economically viable alternative for rehabilitating deteriorated concrete bridges.

The use of LCCA in bridge design and rehabilitation has been limited. The use of LCCA for bridges on a project level basis has often been limited to the …

Sediment Organic Carbon Fate And Transport In A Fluviokarst Watershed In The Bluegrass Region, Admin Husic Jan 2015

Sediment Organic Carbon Fate And Transport In A Fluviokarst Watershed In The Bluegrass Region, Admin Husic

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

Mature karst topography is well recognized within the hydrology and geology communities to include subterranean fluid pathways that act as turbulent conduits conveying fluid from surface stream sinks called swallets to sources called springs. However, we find that little knowledge has been reported with regards to the transport and fate of terrestrially-derived sediment organic carbon (SOC) within karst watersheds. This study investigated the hypothesis that karst pathways could act as biologically active conveyors of SOC that temporarily store sediment, turnover carbon at higher rates than otherwise considered, and recharge depleted SOC back to the surface stream within the fluvial system. …

Uncertainty Considerations In Calibration And Validation Of Hydrologic And Water Quality Models, J. Hernandez Jan 2015

Uncertainty Considerations In Calibration And Validation Of Hydrologic And Water Quality Models, J. Hernandez

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Hydrologic and water quality models (HWQMs) are increasingly used to support decisions on various environmental issues and policy directions for present and future scenarios, at scales varying from watershed to continental levels. Uncertainty associated with such models may affect the ability of the models to accurately evaluate the response of complex systems, leading to misguided assessments and risk management decisions. Current well-known HWQMs contain numerous input parameters, many of which are not known with certainty, and in other cases model users can hardly recognize the genesis of uncertainty. Uncertainty in data, model structure, and model parameters can propagate throughout model …

Selection Of A Realistic Viscous Vortex Tangential Velocity Profile For Computer Simulation Of Vortex-Structure Interaction, M. N. Strasser, R. P. Selvam

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Structure loading by vortices is a relevant phenomenon in numerous fields of engineering significance. Computer modelling is a powerful tool that can be used to study the loading produced on structures by impacting vortices. Realistic simulation of vortex-loading of structures necessitates the use of a realistic vortex tangential velocity profile (TVP). The present study compiles measured TVPs from various types of experimentally-produced vortices as well as real-world tornado and hurricane vortices. The measured TVPs are compared with commonly-used, analytical TVPs. Analytical TVPs that realistically represent the range of measured TVPs are identified and selected for use in future computer simulation …

Design Of Piles In Liquefied Soils For Combined Inertial And Kinematic Demands, Arash Khosravifar, J. Ugalde, T. Travasarou Jan 2015

Design Of Piles In Liquefied Soils For Combined Inertial And Kinematic Demands, Arash Khosravifar, J. Ugalde, T. Travasarou

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The design of piles penetrating liquefiable soils poses a number of challenges, including 1) accounting for the effects of liquefaction on lateral soil springs (p-y), 2) estimating liquefaction-induced kinematic demands (lateral spreading displacements) including pile-pinning effects, and 3) combining the effects of inertial demands from superstructure and kinematic demands from liquefied ground. This paper illustrates two approaches to address the above questions: A) a simplified decoupled approach adopting equivalent static analysis (ESA), and B) a detailed, coupled approach adopting nonlinear dynamic analyses (NDA). These approaches are presented through example projects showing the limitations and the potential conservatism associated with the …

First Steps In Developing Cement-Based Batteries To Power Cathodic Protection Of Embedded Steel In Concrete, Niall Holmes, Aimee Byrne, Brian Norton Jan 2015

First Steps In Developing Cement-Based Batteries To Power Cathodic Protection Of Embedded Steel In Concrete, Niall Holmes, Aimee Byrne, Brian Norton

Articles

This paper presents the first steps in developing innovative cement-based batteries to power cathodic protection in reinforced concrete structures. Initial electrical outputs of 1.55V and 23mA have been found to be sufficient to polarise prescribed corrosion currents of 20mA per m2 of embedded steel. Cathodic protection is a well-developed and powerful technique to limit the effects of steel reinforcement corrosion. However, as it requires an electrical supply day and night, it is often powered by non-environmentally friendly diesel generators or connected to the electrical grid. This paper focuses on increasing the ionic conductivity of the solution in the cement pores, …

Determination Of Explosive Energy Partition Values In Rock Blasting Through Small-Scale Testing, Joshua Calnan Jan 2015

Determination Of Explosive Energy Partition Values In Rock Blasting Through Small-Scale Testing, Joshua Calnan

Theses and Dissertations--Mining Engineering

Blasting is a critical part of most mining operations. The primary function of blasting is to fragment and move rock. For decades, attempts have been made at increasing the efficiency of blasting to reduce costs and increase production. Most of these attempts involve trial and error techniques that focus on changing a single output. These techniques are costly and time consuming and it has been shown that as one output is optimized other outputs move away from their optimum level. To truly optimize a blasting program, the transfer of explosive energy into individual components must be quantified. Explosive energy is …

An Investigation Into Bacterial Contamination In An Urban Nebraska Stream Using Microbial Source Tracking, Allison R. Speicher Jan 2015

An Investigation Into Bacterial Contamination In An Urban Nebraska Stream Using Microbial Source Tracking, Allison R. Speicher

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

High levels of fecal bacteria in surface waters are a public health concern due to the enteric illnesses caused by primary contact with these waters. Shortcomings in the current fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) monitoring approach and the ubiquity of pathogen-impaired water bodies has led to the development of microbial source tracking (MST), a molecular tool that can identify potential fecal contamination sources. In this study we use a bacterial community based approach examining the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene to elucidate sources of fecal bacteria in Antelope Creek, an urban creek in Lincoln Nebraska.

We hypothesized that sediment …

In impact resistance of reinforced concrete (RC) panels against projectiles the contribution of the orthogonal mesh reinforcement has been ignored. In this study the contribution of mesh reinforcement to impact resistance and itseffect on the nature of local damage caused by impact of non-deformable projectiles are investigated. The investigation included a combination of 53 experiments and series of finite-element based numerical simulations. Three levels of local damage modes were investegated based on the severity of the degree of damage in the impacted panels. Mesh reinforcement ratio within the range of reinforcement ratio considered, namely 0.19% to 0.48%, was irrelevant to …

Overweight Vehicle Permitting Alternatives, Stephanie R Everett Jan 2015

Overweight Vehicle Permitting Alternatives, Stephanie R Everett

Open Access Dissertations

Overweight vehicles exceed the federal and/or state statutory limits for either the gross vehicle weight (GVW) or the weight of individual axles or axle groups. National and state limits on vehicle weights were established to preserve the highway infrastructure. Past research has shown that overweight operations, while causing significant damage to roads and bridges, can enhance the trucking industry productivity, and thus yield economic benefits both regionally and nationally. In the United States, individual states administer oversize and overweight vehicle permit programs to regulate and collect revenues from overweight operations. Differences in the truck size and weight limits and overweight …

Damage Detection Through Acoustic Emission Of Fracture Processes In Concrete Masonry Units, John Alexander Cain Jan 2015

Damage Detection Through Acoustic Emission Of Fracture Processes In Concrete Masonry Units, John Alexander Cain

Masters Theses

"Masonry structures are vulnerable to earthquakes; their brittleness and discontinuous formation make them susceptible to collapse. In the event of an emergency, this could be detrimental and perhaps fatal. The area of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is focused on understanding the behavior of structures for the sake of safety and predicting their longevity. One applicable technique to monitor this behavior is Acoustic Emission (AE). Acoustic Emissions are transient elastic waves released as microcracks nucleate from stress intensities, coalesce into cracks and then accumulate as damage. AE monitoring is a favorable method because it is capable of detecting cracking from within …

Statistical Approach To Design For Fall Prevention In Construction, Kyunghwan Kim Jan 2015

Statistical Approach To Design For Fall Prevention In Construction, Kyunghwan Kim

Wayne State University Theses

During the past decades, the construction industry has been considered as one of the most vulnerable field to work-related injuries and fatalities, and fall accidents are the leading causes accounting for about one-third of the total fatal injuries happened in construction. Furthermore, more than 30% of fall fatal cases occurred in the projects under $ 300K in Korea where construction workers' safety and health are not usually considered as top priorities because the contractors, who are normally small sized construction firms or self-employed, do not have safety budget to deal with construction workers' safety.

In this respect, this study focused …
