This study investigates the tensile properties and ductility of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) reinforced with high-strength steel hooked fibers with a tensile strength of 445 ksi (3,070 MPa) and compares its tensile performance to that of UHPC reinforced with commonly used high-strength smooth steel microfibers with a tensile strength of 2,160 MPa (313 ksi). The research is based on a proprietary mix developed at the University of Texas at Arlington and investigates the mechanical properties of UHPC with varying fiber volume fractions of 1.5%, 2%, 2.25%, and 2.4%. Highway slope failure is globally a momentous issue. Highway slope failure poses a significant issue in transportation infrastructure. Several factors can contribute to slope failures, including geological conditions, weather events, and human activities. Weather events like heavy rainfall, cyclic shrinkage and swelling can trigger slope failures constructed on high plastic clays. It increases pore water pressure, causing soil saturation, and inducing failure. The consequences of highway slope failures are severe, ranging from traffic disruptions, road closures, and damage to vehicles and infrastructure, to potential injuries or loss of lives. Solid Waste Management (SWM) is a global issue from its social, environmental, and economic aspects. Poor SWM is one of the significant causes of resource degradation, environmental pollution, and public health problems. In this study, households’ solid waste generation and characterization were determined for selected cities in Ethiopia. Quantitative and qualitative study methods were applied to collect primary and secondary data to assess the household’s MSW generation rate and characterize the waste type's physical composition. Liquefaction is a geohazard causing loss of lives and infrastructure around the world. During earthquakes the shaking of the ground may cause a loss of soil strength that results in the settlement of buildings, landslides, failure of earth dams, amongst other hazards (Liquefaction of Soils During Earthquakes, 1985). Liquefaction is the result of a sudden increase in the pore-water pressure (PWP)— referred to as excess pore-water pressure (EPWP)— in loose, saturated, noncohesive, fine soils during seismic shaking. Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) has emerged as a promising technique for soil stabilization, traditionally involving the preparation and mixing of treatment solutions with the soil. However, this thesis explores a novel approach of applying MICP by directly mixing dry chemical compounds into the soil and subsequently adding water. Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) is recharging purified wastewater into the Potomac Aquifer via the Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow (SWIFT) project. Conventional SWIFT treatment applies coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, ozonation, biofiltration, granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption, and ultraviolet disinfection to secondary effluent to produce water that meets drinking water standards for managed aquifer recharge. HRSD is considering implementing direct filtration as an alternative to conventional treatment for two additional SWIFT facilities. Direct filtration presents an opportunity for significant cost savings by eliminating sedimentation, shortening flocculation detention time, and reducing coagulant usage. The collection and processing of paper tickets for construction material delivery is an inefficient and antiquated practice that exposes inspectors on highway paving projects to substantial safety risks. An alternative to the collection of paper tickets is e-Ticketing, which uses web-based systems to deliver similar information. This research documented a current paper ticketing process and compared it to an e-Ticketing process that was implemented on several pilot projects. A pilot scale coupled photovoltaic-thermal solar powered desalination system was evaluated at the Brackish Groundwater National Desalination Research Facility (BGNDRF). The pilot system consisted of a 3-kW photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) solar panel array and a 2.3 kW photovoltaic (PV) array coupled with a 4 gal/min single-stage 4 membrane reverse osmosis (RO) desalination system. The principal goal of the current research is to develop and improve weir-based energy dissipator designs at the outlets of circular culverts. In the present case, we are interested in full-length weirs and staggered weirs. A review of related literature was completed and reported; a test facility was carefully designed and constructed to collect flow information in a basin downstream of a model broken-back circular culvert; instrumentation was installed to measure discharges, streamwise depths, and velocities. The extent and severity of wildfires have increased around the world, necessitating a greater understanding of the consequences of wildfire and post-fire impacts on soil and groundwater. Wildfire suppression techniques like aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF) can also contaminate the soil with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which can contribute to human and environmental health concerns.
