Case History Of A Test Pile Program For The Redevelopment Of Newark Airport, Patrick De Michele May 1967

Case History Of A Test Pile Program For The Redevelopment Of Newark Airport, Patrick De Michele

Theses

A pile load test program was conducted at Newark Airport to determine the most economical piles to be utilized to support the structure in the Redevelopment of Newark Airport. The controlling criteria were the pre-determined design capacity of 50 to 100 tons for the piles and conformance to the Newark Building Code regarding the maximum allowable loads on the Airport's bearing strata and the allowable settlements for test loaded piles. Thirty-four piles, ten timber, four steel H-piles, four pre-stressed concrete, seven cobi shell and nine steel pipe piles, were driven to determine driving characteristics of the piles and the reaction …

Application Of Multivariate Analysis In Predicting Water Yields In Utah, Leei-Luoh Wang May 1967

Application Of Multivariate Analysis In Predicting Water Yields In Utah, Leei-Luoh Wang

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The basic hydrologic data required to determine the water yield are usually unavailable for small basins and streams while increasing emphasis is being placed on their development. Therefore, some methods and techniques for estimating the amount of water available for development of these small units is needed .

The purpose of this study is to use the concepts and techniques of statistical analysis to develop equations which are useful in estimating the water yield of watersheds for which no stream flow records are available . The approach is an extension of earlier studies at Utah State University (1, lQ) in …

Matrix Computer Analysis Of Curvilinear Grid Systems, David Leon Fenton Jan 1967

Matrix Computer Analysis Of Curvilinear Grid Systems, David Leon Fenton

Doctoral Dissertations

"A general equilibrium-stiffness method of matrix structural analysis was adapted and applied to the solution of the member end forces and moments of each of the members in a curvilinear structural grid system. A structural system of this nature is commonly used as the supporting framework for a "steel-framed dome", in addition to being a basic structural component in many aerospace applications. An integral part of the development of the analysis was the development of a computer program to perform the many complex operations required to obtain the solution. The engineer, by supplying the appropriate structural data and load data …

Some Effects Of Nickel On The Microbial Population Of Activated Sludge, Virgil Eugene Carr Jan 1967

Some Effects Of Nickel On The Microbial Population Of Activated Sludge, Virgil Eugene Carr

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to study the effects of nickel on the microbial population of activated sludge, to establish a relationship between effluent quality and changes in microbial population, and to determine the fate of nickel applied. Five one liter fill and draw activated sludge units were fed settled domestic sewage and received constant daily nickel doses of 1-10 mg/l, and a 50 mg/l slug dose applied after 27-30 days of operation. The parameters used were the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the effluent and membrane filtered effluent, mixed liquor and effluent total suspended solids, mixed liquor volatile …

The Influence Of A Fixed Failure Plane On The Direct Shear Test, Kenneth Hodges Bell Jan 1967

The Influence Of A Fixed Failure Plane On The Direct Shear Test, Kenneth Hodges Bell

Masters Theses

"The analysis of the direct or box shear test for determining the shear strength of a soil makes use of the assumption that the failure plane coincides with the plane of separation between the two halves of the box. Hvorsley, Roscoe, Hansen and others have theorized and experimentally shown that this is not always the case. The stress distributions on the failure plane, however it may be oriented, are not as uniform as generally assumed. This investigation was carried out to compare direct shear tests run on granular, air dry material where the failure was allowed to take place naturally …

The Measurement Of Explosively Induced Stresses In Rock-Like Materials With A Capacitive Transducer, Vincent Paul Crane Jan 1967

The Measurement Of Explosively Induced Stresses In Rock-Like Materials With A Capacitive Transducer, Vincent Paul Crane

Masters Theses

"A capacitive transducer was developed for measuring the free surface motion in Hydrostone blocks loaded by an explosive plane wave generator approximately one foot from the specimen. The charge to specimen distance was adjusted to produce a single spall, the position of the fracture being noted on the recovered specimen. The longitudinal wave velocity in each specimen was determined by the ultrasonic pulse technique before each shot. From the above measurements the stress, strain and strain rate at the point of fracture were determined. An attempt was made to determine the actual fracture time with imbedded [sic] conductive graphite rods, …

Quality Of Surface And Subsurface Water In A Missouri Carbonate Karst Terrain (Dry Fork, Norman, And Benton Creek Watersheds), James Chi Huang Jan 1967

Quality Of Surface And Subsurface Water In A Missouri Carbonate Karst Terrain (Dry Fork, Norman, And Benton Creek Watersheds), James Chi Huang

Masters Theses

"Little is known about the effect of carbonate karst terrain on water quality in the United States. Karst topography occurs over a large portion of Missouri and over a significant part of other midwestern states. The objectives of this study were the determination of the quality of surface and subsurface water in carbonate karst terrain and the investigation and evaluation of the effect of rainfall and runoff on water quality in the Meramec Spring area, east of Rolla, Missouri, during both the dry and wet seasons over the period of one year. Water samples were collected at a large number …

A Study Of The Compressibility Of Silty Soils., Marvin L. Byington Jan 1967

A Study Of The Compressibility Of Silty Soils., Marvin L. Byington

Masters Theses

"This study has been conducted to determine the applicability of the Terzaghi Theory of Consolidation and to determine the compressibility of silt soils with varying clay content. A pure silt was extracted from the Lebanon Silt Loam and mixed with varying amounts of the Onyx Cave Illite-Chlorite Clay. The compressibility of these mixtures was determined and an attempt made to apply the Terzaghi Theory in the analysis. It was found that the compressibility of soils high in silt content is very low. It was also found that the Terzaghi Theory may be applied to mixtures of 15 percent or more …

Effects Of Mixing Procedure Upon Uniformity Of Fibre Reinforced Concrete, Donald E. Nortrup Jan 1967

Effects Of Mixing Procedure Upon Uniformity Of Fibre Reinforced Concrete, Donald E. Nortrup

Masters Theses

"This thesis describes the effects of several methods of introducing wire fibres into a concrete mix upon the uniformity of wire fibre reinforced concrete. Various mechanical and manual methods of introducing the fibres were used and comparisons of the methods were based upon variability in splitting tensile strength and the quantitative distribution of the fibres as determined by visual inspection of sawed cylinders. Test results show that the tensile strength of concrete is increased appreciably by the inclusion of steel wire fibres in the mix and the uniformity of strength is similar to that of unreinforced concrete. The methods of …

Stress Analysis Of A Wall Footing Subjected To External Vertical Loads And Overturning Moments By The Finite Element Method, Adil Godiwalla Jan 1967

Stress Analysis Of A Wall Footing Subjected To External Vertical Loads And Overturning Moments By The Finite Element Method, Adil Godiwalla

Masters Theses

"This investigation pertains to the stress analysis by the finite element method of a wall footing subjected to external vertical loads and external overturning moments. This problem has been reduced to a two-dimensional stress analysis problem by taking a unit length of the wall. A rectangular plate - element is used throughout this investigation. The development of the matrix equations is shown and the solution is performed by digital computer. Stresses in the horizontal direction show essentially linear variation which is in agreement with simple structural theory, while stresses in the vertical direction show severe perturbation near the column load. …
