Volume Swing Frequency Response Method For Determining Mass Transfer Mechanisms In Microporous Adsorbents, Mohammad Iftekhar Hossain
Volume Swing Frequency Response Method For Determining Mass Transfer Mechanisms In Microporous Adsorbents, Mohammad Iftekhar Hossain
Theses and Dissertations
Because of their numerous important applications in industrial catalytic, separation, and purification processes, miroporous materials have attracted considerable attention. Understanding the dynamic behavior of various gases in these porous materials is a critical step in designing, developing and effective operation of such kind of industrial processes. Frequency response (FR) methods have proven to be one of the best recently developed techniques and have been widely used to investigate kinetics behavior of various gas-solid systems due to their ability to discriminate among different rate limiting mechanisms. The current work has been focusing on the development of a volume swing frequency response …

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
There are many different active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) that have been discovered in research labs all around the world that can be used to treat and cure patients with a variety of different ailments. The challenge with these APIs in treatments is that they are not soluble in water, thus they low absorption into the blood stream (bio-availability). The key to making these APIs more bio-available is to understand how they grow as crystals and drop out of the aqueous solutions. One of the ways these APIs were made more bio-available is to render them amorphous and suspend them in …

The details surrounding the crossover from wormlike-specific to universal polymeric behavior has been the subject of debate and confusion even for the simple case of a dilute, unconfined wormlike chain. We have directly computed the polymer size, form factor, free energy, and Kirkwood diffusivity for unconfined wormlike chains as a function of molecular weight, focusing on persistence lengths and effective widths that represent single-stranded and double-stranded DNA in a high ionic strength buffer. To do so, we use a chain-growth Monte Carlo algorithm, the pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method (PERM), which allows us to estimate equilibrium and near-equilibrium dynamic properties of wormlike …

Novel Ceria-Zirconia-Yttria Mesostructures: Synthesis, Characterization, Diffusional Studies And The Effects Of Morphology On Their Properties, Alma Cordova Morales
All Dissertations
Ceria-zirconia-yttria (CZY) mixed oxides are used as catalyst supports for three-way catalysts for automotive exhaust emission control and in solid oxide fuel cells. By improving the morphology of CZY mesopores it is possible to reduce the sintering of supported noble metals and enhance overall catalyst lifetime and performance. However, limited studies have been published on the synthetic control of the morphology of CZY materials and the effects that CZY pore geometry has on catalyst operation.
To create optimized CZY catalyst supports, novel mesoporous CZY oxides were synthesized via classical sol-gel and evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) methods, obtaining mesostructures that exhibited …
Computational Studies Of Ion Transport In Polymer Electrolytes, Hui Wu
Computational Studies Of Ion Transport In Polymer Electrolytes, Hui Wu
Doctoral Dissertations
Improving ionic conductivity and lithium mobility in polymer electrolytes is important for their practical use for battery electrolytes. In this study, a combination of molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations was used to bring insight into lithium ion transport in poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with plasticizers and also next to alumina solid surface doped with lithium salt. The simulations were performed using a moderately high molecular weight polymer (Mn = 10,000 g/mol) at an EO:Li ratio of 15. For the plasticized system, the PEO with LiN(CF3SO 2)2 (LiTFSI) was mixed with 10 wt% plasticizers that included either cyclic ethylene carbonate …

Modeling Small Molecule Elution From A Hydrogel Using A Microfluidic Technique, Stephanie Evans
Master’s Theses
Drug release from a fluid-contacting biomaterial is simulated using a microfluidic device with channels defined by solute-loaded hydrogel. In order to mimic a drug delivery device, a solution of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEG-DA), solute, and photoinitiator is cured inside a microfluidic device with a channel through the center ofthe hydrogel. As water is pumped through the channel, solute diffuses out of the hydrogel and into the water. Channel sizes within the devices range from 300 µm to 1000 µm to simulate vessels within the body. The properties of the PEG hydrogel were characterizedby the extent of crosslinking, the swelling ratio, …

Single-Particle Model For A Lithium-Ion Cell: Thermal Behavior, Meng Guo, Godfrey Sikha, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
The single-particle model presented by Santhanagopalan et al. [ J. Power Sources , 156 , 620 (2006)] is extended to include an energy balance. The temperature dependence of the solid phase diffusion coefficient of the lithium in the intercalation particles, the electrochemical reaction rate constants, and the open circuit potentials (OCPs) of the positive and negative electrodes are included in the model. The solution phase polarization is approximated using a nonlinear resistance, which is a function of current and temperature. The model is used to predict the temperature and voltage profiles in a lithium-ion cell during galvanostatic operations. The single-particle …

A Microfluidic Method To Measure Diffusion In Hydrogels, Andrew Lee Litzenberger
A Microfluidic Method To Measure Diffusion In Hydrogels, Andrew Lee Litzenberger
Master’s Theses
A novel microfluidic method is proposed for studying diffusion of small molecules in a hydrogel. Microfluidic devices were prepared with semi-permeable microchannels defined by crosslinked poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). Uptake of dye molecules from aqueous solutions flowing through the microchannels was observedoptically and diffusion of the dye into the hydrogel was quantified. To complement the diffusion measurements from the microfluidic studies, nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) characterization of the diffusion of dye in the PEG hydrogels was performed. The diffusion of small molecules in a hydrogel is relevant to applications such asdrug delivery and modeling transport for tissue-engineering applications. The diffusion of small …

Reduction Of Model Order Based On Proper Orthogonal Decomposition For Lithium-Ion Battery Simulations, Long Cai, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
A reduced-order model (ROM) is developed using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) for a physics-based lithium-ion battery model. The methodology to obtain the proper orthogonal modes and to analyze their optimality is included. The POD-based ROM for a lithium-ion battery is used to simulate a charge/discharge process and the behavior of a battery pack. Compared to the physics-based model, the computational time to solve the ROM is significantly less, and the two models show excellent agreement.

From Elastic Deformation To Terminal Flow Of A Monodisperse Entangled Melt In Uniaxial Extension, Yangyang Wang, Shi-Qing Wang
College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
Using a well-entangled monodisperse styrene-butadiene random-copolymer (SBR) melt as a model system, we illustrate generic features of uniaxial extension behavior that may be shared by all well-entangled thermoplastic and elastomeric materials. Depending on the imposed extensional rate, the same sample may behave like a viscous liquid or an elastic "solid." Analogous to the recently revealed shear inhomogeneity, the SBR melt inevitably undergoes cohesive failure in the form of sample breakage whenever the Weissenberg number is much greater than unity, making it challenging to reach steady state. In the elastic deformation regime where the external deformation rate is faster than Rouse …

Short-Time Transient Analysis Of Intercalation Of An Ion Into A Sphere, Sheba Devan, Ralph E. White
Short-Time Transient Analysis Of Intercalation Of An Ion Into A Sphere, Sheba Devan, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
A short-time transient analysis is presented for a sinusoidal input potential for a spherical particle. The objective of this work was to extract accurate values of the parameters associated with an intercalation into a spherical particle. These parameters are exchange current density, double-layer capacitance, and diffusion coefficient. The effects of these parameters on the response were examined using a sensitivity analysis, which indicated that optimum frequency values of the input perturbation exist for estimation of these parameters. A procedure is presented to obtain all these parameters using the short-time response. The results show that the short-time analysis is a useful …

Five parameters of a model of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) cathode (the volume fraction of gas pores in the gas diffusion layer, the volume fraction of gas pores in the catalyst layer, the exchange current density of the oxygen reduction reaction, the effective ionic conductivity of the electrolyte, and the ratio of the effective diffusion coefficient of oxygen in a flooded spherical agglomerate particle to the square of that particle radius) were determined by least-squares fitting of experimental polarization curves. The values of parameters obtained in this work indicate that ionic conduction and gas-phase transport are two …

Analytical Solution For The Impedance Of A Porous Electrode, Sheba Devan, Venkat R. Subramanian, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
A macrohomogeneous model is presented for a porous electrode that includes coupled potential and concentration gradients with linear kinetics. The equations are solved to obtain an analytical expression for the impedance of a porous electrode. Complex plane plots are presented that illustrate two well-defined arcs: a kinetic arc and a diffusion arc with their time constants far apart. The effects of parameters such as exchange current density, porosity, diffusion coefficient, thickness, and interfacial area on the impedance spectra are presented. The usefulness of the analytical solution in investigating the effect of solution phase diffusion is also presented.

A model for the simulation of the steady-state impedance response of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) cathode is presented. The catalyst layer of the electrode is assumed to consist of many flooded spherical agglomerate particles surrounded by a small volume fraction of gas pores. Stefan-Maxwell equations are used to describe the multicomponent gas-phase transport occurring in both the gas diffusion layer and the catalyst layer of the electrode. Liquid-phase diffusion of O2 is assumed to take place in the flooded agglomerate particles. Newman’s porous electrode theory is applied to determine over-potential distributions. © 2004 The Electrochemical Society. All …

Solvent Diffusion Model For Aging Of Lithium-Ion Battery Cells, Harry J. Ploehn, Premanand Ramadass, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
This work presents a rigorous continuum mechanics model of solvent diffusion describing the growth of solid-electrolyte interfaces (SEIs) in Li-ion cells incorporating carbon anodes. The model assumes that a reactive solvent component diffuses through the SEI and undergoes two-electron reduction at the carbon-SEI interface. Solvent reduction produces an insoluble product, resulting in increasing SEI thickness. The model predicts that the SEI thickness increases linearly with the square root of time. Experimental data from the literature for capacity loss in two types of prototype Li-ion cells validates the solvent diffusion model. We use the model to estimate SEI thickness and extract …

In this paper, diffusion and electro-osmotic drag of water across Nafion® membranes in the presence of HCl are characterized. For all the measurements, one side of the Nafion membrane was in contact with liquid water and the other side with gaseous anhydrous HCl. To characterize diffusion of water, the open-circuit flux of water across a catalyst-coated Nafion 115 membrane was measured as a function of HCl flow rate and temperature at a constant cell pressure of 1 atm. Due to the nature of varying driving force for diffusion as a function of HCl flow rate, the experimental data was analyzed …

The validity of estimating the solid phase diffusion coefficient, Ds, of a lithium intercalation electrode from impedance measurement by a modified electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) method is studied. A macroscopic porous electrode model and concentrated electrolyte theory are used to simulate the synthetic impedance data. The modified EIS method is applied for estimating Ds. The influence of parameters such as the exchange current density, radius of active material particle, solid phase conductivity, porosity, volume fraction of inert material, and thickness of the porous carbon intercalation electrode, the solution phase diffusion coefficient, and transference number, on the …

Approximate models are developed, based on second, fourth, and sixth order polynomials, that describe the concentration profile of an electrochemically active species in a spherical electrode particle. Analytical expressions are obtained that describe the way the concentration profiles, surface concentrations, and electrode utilization change during the galvanostatic discharge of an electrode particle. Based on a comparison with an exact analytical model over a wide range of dimensionless current densities, all three approximate models performed extremely well in predicting these quantities. Quantitative criterion for the validity of these models is also developed and shows that the sixth order, four parameter approximate …

Diffusion Of Water In Nafion 115 Membranes, Sathya Motupally, Aaron J. Becker, John W. Weidner
Faculty Publications
In this paper, experimental and simulated data for the diffusion of water across Nafion membranes as a function of the water activity gradient are presented. The gradient in the activity of water across the membrane was varied by changing the flow rate and pressure of nitrogen gas on one side of the membrane. The other side of the membrane was equilibrated with liquid water. It was found that the model predictions are very sensitive to the value of the diffusion coefficient of water in Nafion. Using the Fickian diffusion coefficient extracted from self-diffusion measurements reported in the literature, the model …

A cubic lattice network of interconnected pores was constructed to represent the porous structure existing in a monolith (continuous bed) or in a column packed with porous chromatographic particles. Expressions were also constructed and utilized to simulate, through the use of the pore network model, the intraparticle interstitial velocity and pore diffusivity of adsorbate molecules in porous chromatographic particles or in monoliths under retained and unretained conditions. The combined effects of steric hindrance at the entrance to the pores and frictional resistance within the pores, as well as the effects of pore size, pore connectivity, n(T), of the porous network, …

A one-dimensional mathematical model of a spirally wound lithium/thionyl chloride primary battery is developed and used for parameter estimation and design studies. The model formulation is based on the fundamental conservation laws using porous electrode theory and concentrated solution theory. The model is used to estimate the transference number, the diffusion coefficient, and the kinetic parameters for the reactions at the anode and the cathode as a function of temperature. These parameters are obtained by fitting the simulated capacity and average cell voltage to experimental data over a wide range of temperatures (–55 to 49°C) and discharge loads (10-250 ). …

Birkman Screening And The Covariance Of The Fluid Velocity Of Fixed Beds, Ashok S. Sangani, Donald L. Koch, Reghan J. Hill
Biomedical and Chemical Engineering - All Scholarship
The phenomenon of Brinkman screening, whereby the fluid velocity disturbance produced by each particle in a fixed bed is attenuated by the forces that the fluid exerts on surrounding particles, plays a crucial role in limiting the range of velocity correlations in porous media and fixed beds. Koch and Brady [J. Fluid Mech. 154, 399 (1985)] showed theoretically that Brinkman screening leads to a finite hydrodynamic diffusion coefficient for fluid phase tracers in dilute fixed beds. In this Letter, we present the results of two simulation techniques (lattice-Boltzmann method and a multipole method) confirming the screening of the fluid velocity …

Proton Diffusion In Nickel Hydroxide: Prediction Of Active Material Utilization, Sathya Motupally, Christopher C. Streinz, John W. Weidner

Galvanostatic charge and discharge experiments reveal that the active material in nickel electrodes cannot be fully accessed at high currents or for thick films. It has been proposed that the utilization of the active material is controlled by the diffusion rate of protons through the film. This hypothesis is supported by the good agreement between mathematical simulations of material utilization and experimental data over a range of charge and discharge currents and film thicknesses. Furthermore, the fraction of material utilized is larger on charge than on discharge. The asymmetry on charge and discharge is due to a diffusion coefficient that …

A model for the complex faradaic impedance of the nickel hydroxide active material is presented and used to extract the diffusion coefficient of protons from the EIS data. Impedance data over a range of frequencies can be used to extract a constant diffusion coefficient without the knowledge of the initial mobile proton concentration or the form of the charge-transfer kinetic expression. The proton diffusion coefficient is a strong function of SOC …
