Chemical Decomposition Of Flexible Polyurethane Foam To Generate A Media For Microbial Upcycling, Kaushik Baruah
Chemical Decomposition Of Flexible Polyurethane Foam To Generate A Media For Microbial Upcycling, Kaushik Baruah
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Polyurethane waste is becoming a global concern as a large amount is being disposed of in landfills every year, and only a fraction is being recycled. Several polyurethane recycling techniques exist, of which ammonolysis and base-catalyzed hydrolysis is the least explored. Flexible polyurethane foam (FPUF) decomposition can generate amines that can act as a carbon source for the growth of microbial consortia. This study aims to generate a novel media capable of microbial upcycling via ammonolysis and base-catalyzed hydrolysis of flexible polyurethane foams (FPUFs) using ammonium hydroxide and subsequently determine the reaction conditions for maximum solubilization of polyurethane foam in …
Virus Inactivation By Novel Virucidal Materials, Sneha Singh
Virus Inactivation By Novel Virucidal Materials, Sneha Singh
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The development of virucidal coatings to inactivate a broad spectrum of viruses has gained popularity. Antiviral coating of personal protective equipment such as facial coverings can reduce the accumulation of viral load and mitigate transmission of airborne illnesses, which occur primarily through direct contact with respiratory aerosols or droplets carrying infectious viruses. Moreover, modification of PPE to inactivate viruses upon contact improves their reusability and reduces waste. Coating high frequency touch surfaces with similar virucidal coatings can reduce the risk of disease transmission associated with contaminated surfaces. This study explores the development of three novel virucidal materials to control the …
Microscopic And Laboratory Scale Characterization Methods To Evaluate Biomass Deconstruction, Meenaa Chandrasekar
Microscopic And Laboratory Scale Characterization Methods To Evaluate Biomass Deconstruction, Meenaa Chandrasekar
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Renewable fuels from lignocellulosic biomass are an appealing option because they can seamlessly integrate into the existing fuel distribution infrastructure. Lignocellulosic biomass constitutes nonedible plant material obtained from plant cell walls. The natural recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass poses a challenge in accessing the cell wall carbohydrates during biochemical conversion. Despite various approaches, enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass remains economically impractical due to incomplete knowledge about biomass recalcitrance and the influence of environmental factors on biomass quality.
The first goal of this dissertation was to construct a microfluidic imaging reactor to better understand the tissue-specific deconstruction of plant materials. Confocal laser …
Treating Contaminated Water: Predicting Reactivities Of Aqueous Organic Contaminants With Hydrated Electrons, And Development Of A Biogarden To Manage Greywater Discharge In Monteverde, Costa Rica, Rose C. Daily
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Advanced reduction processes (ARPs) that generate highly reactive solvated electrons (e-aq) are a promising method for the destruction of conventional and emerging aqueous organic contaminants. While there is a large database of contaminant reactivity with e-aq in the literature, there is little information on the detailed elementary mechanisms for reduction of multifunctional group compounds and the impact of those functional groups on reactivity. As it is difficult to determine specific mechanisms through experiments and time consuming to measure reactivity, the development of computational approaches to elucidate mechanisms and predict reactivity is becoming increasingly important. In …
Hydro Cyclonic Separation Of Polyester Microfibers From Washing Machine Wastewater, Joe Kulkarni
Hydro Cyclonic Separation Of Polyester Microfibers From Washing Machine Wastewater, Joe Kulkarni
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Clothing made from synthetic materials shed fibers in washing machines, and these fibers find their way into the effluent water. These fibers can absorb toxic materials in wastewater treatment plants and can then carry these toxins into other aquatic environments.
It’s believed that a hydro cyclone could be scaled down enough to fit into a washing machine and could be used to filter out up to 80% of the microparticles from the effluent water. It’s proposed to investigate if a hydro cyclone can be used for this application. The overall goal was for the hydro cyclone to concentrate the micro …
Co2-Assisted Ethylene Production And Subsequent Purification: A Materials Development, Kinetic Assessment, And Process Performance Investigation, Khaled Baamran
Co2-Assisted Ethylene Production And Subsequent Purification: A Materials Development, Kinetic Assessment, And Process Performance Investigation, Khaled Baamran
Doctoral Dissertations
"This research focuses on the In-Situ CO2 capture and utilization in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE) for ethylene production, and a subsequent ethylene purification through adsorptive separation process. In particular, several dual-function materials (DFMs) were developed, formulated into 3D-structure, and investigated for ODHE reaction to ethylene under various process conditions using CO2 as a mild oxidant. The DFMs materials were consisted of CaO and metal oxides (e.g., Cr2O3 and V2O5) supporting H-ZSM-5. The results indicated that higher cell densities lead to better performance due to kinetic enhancement, and the optimum …

Techno-Economic Analysis Of Acetone And Ethylene Production From Bioethanol, Thanyarath Nueangchamnong
Techno-Economic Analysis Of Acetone And Ethylene Production From Bioethanol, Thanyarath Nueangchamnong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Bioethanol is primarily blended with gasoline to produce "gasohol." This blend not only reduces dependence on fossil fuels but also cuts down on crude oil imports and bolsters the agricultural sector by creating a market for crops and their residues. Currently, Thailand is witnessing a growing trend towards electric vehicles (EVs). This trend is largely driven by government subsidies for domestic EV manufacturing and plans by overseas companies to establish manufacturing bases within the country. As a result, the bioethanol industry in Thailand is grappling with challenges, chief among them being the decreasing demand for its product. Nonetheless, any bioethanol …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation Of Glycerol Steam Reformer Packed With Nonuniform Foam Catalyst, Thanawee Siripreedapat
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This study investigates the performance of a fixed bed reactor packed with a foam catalyst with non-uniform porosity for hydrogen production from glycerol steam reforming. COMSOL Multiphysics software was employed to model the reactor. The first scenario compared the pellet catalyst with industrial foams with different porosities (i.e., 10, 20, and 30 PPI). The second scenario adjusted the porosity of the industrial foam by rearranging porosity in the reactor's axial, then comparing performance, cost-effectiveness, and economic feasibility. The foam catalyst's open-cell structure allowed a maximum H2 yield of 65.95% using a reactor length five times shorter than pellet and a …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Silica is commonly used as a support material in metallocene catalytic systems (MTC). The silica-mesocellular foam (MCF-Si) is a three-dimensional spherical pore structure of silica. At present, MCF-Si is utilized as a catalyst support in a variety of chemical reactions, but for metallocene catalytic support, it has been less common. This research has two parts. Firstly, the feasibility of employing MCF-Si as a support material in metallocene catalytic systems was demonstrated through the investigation of methylaluminoxane (MAO) cocatalysts supported on two distinct types of structured mesoporous silica supports, namely Cab-Si and MCF-Si, in ethylene polymerization and ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization. In the …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Zinc-ion batteries are increasingly recognized as a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to conventional lithium-ion battery technologies. Among the various cathode materials, manganese dioxide (MnO2), particularly the layered-type δ-MnO2, exhibits significant potential due to its advantageous structure for Zn2+ intercalation. However, the use of aqueous electrolytes in these systems poses challenges, including capacity fading after repeated charge/discharge cycles. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), an electrically conductive polymer, is known for its properties that enhance Zn2+ ion mobility. In this study, PEDOT-encapsulated δ-MnO2 was synthesized via a hydrothermal method for application as a cathode material in zinc-ion batteries utilizing nonaqueous electrolytes. Advanced characterization techniques, notably …

Jet fuels are mainly generated by refining petroleum feedstock, resulting in the emission of greenhouse gases. Therefore, biojet fuel is proposed as an alternative solution for solving this issue. Hydroprocessing of vegetable oils is an efficient pathway for producing biojet fuel. This process includes three reaction which are hydrodeoxygenation, hydrocracking and hydroisomerization over metal-acid catalyst. Biojet fuel series ranging from C8 to C16 must have a freezing point around -47 °C or lower, requiring the use of iso-paraffins which have low freezing points. There are challenges in improving the quantity and quality of biojet fuel production. This study aims to …
