Laryngeal and hypopharyngeal carcinoma are two types of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas. The location of the tumor makes it hard to detect without complex tests. Overall, these types of cancer are not common, and there are no simple screening tests for such cancers. Due to this issue, laryngeal and hypopharyngeal carcinoma are usually diagnosed when signs and symptoms occur, such as sore throat, trouble swallowing, and constant coughing. With the use of FaDu, a head and neck cancer cell line of the hypopharyngeal origin, experimentation can be performed in order to initiate possible treatments. The standard treatments for …

The advantages of the electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide to fuels using renewable energy sources are two-fold: (1) it has the potential to accomplish a carbon-neutral energy cycle and (2) it can provide an approach to tackle the environmental challenges caused by anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions. Although thermodynamically possible, the kinetics of carbon dioxide reduction to fuels remains challenging and therefore, an efficient and robust electrocatalyst is needed to promote the reaction. The ideal catalyst for the electrochemical CO2 reduction must be capable of mediating multiple proton-coupled electron transfer reactions at low overpotentials, suppressing the concurrent hydrogen evolution reaction, converting …

High temperature materials are used in a variety of energy applications such as jet turbines, high temperature sensors, and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Discovery of new materials and their optimization represents a difficult engineering challenge, as the materials have to be designed to have a high figure of merit during intense high temperature operations.
The large number of engineering considerations involved in the identification and optimization of such materials makes traditional one-by-one material investigations prohibitively time consuming. Due to increasing concerns associated with the emissions created from the combustion of coal, technologies are being modified or developed to limit many of these harmful emissions. The content of this thesis will focus on two technologies and the specific pollutants they seek to limit. The first investigated is selective catalytic reduction, which is utilized to decrease NO emissions. Due to the recent promulgation of the MATS regulations, focus has been on reducing the Hg emissions through the optimization of the SCR catalysts, making them bi-functional for NO reduction and Hg oxidation. Hydraulic fracturing is recognized as the primary technique to achieve economic oil and gas production from low permeability reservoirs like shale and tight-sand formations. One of the main challenges facing the oil and gas industry is maintaining the proppant functionality in the subsurface where replacement of proppant is only possible by expensive refracturing operations. Proppant crushing and proppant embedment have posed challenges for sustainable production from stimulated wells especially in soft and deep formations like Haynesville Shales. Biomass or coal gasification are promising processes for renewable energy. However, a major operating problem in gasification is what to do with syngas byproducts such as H2S and tars (heavy hydrocarbons) that cause catalyst deactivation downstream. Studies have shown that rare earth oxides (REOs) doped with transition metals are promising catalysts for tar reforming in the presence of sulfur.(R. Li, Roy, Bridges, & Dooley, 2014) In Chapter 1, propane is studied as a model compound for tar reforming with transition metal-doped (e.g., Mn, Fe) REOs. Harmful algal blooms pose a threat to human health and the environment. Many complex factors influence their formation and development, and much is still unknown. One major influencing factor that is well-known yet poorly studied is algal chemotaxis. Many studies have examined chemotaxis in other organisms, but very little about chemotaxis in algae has been studied, largely because existing technology and assay techniques are inadequate. This thesis presents an improved model for gas-liquid two-phase flow in churn and annular flow regimes for small- and large-diameter in vertical and near-vertical pipes. This new model assumes that a net liquid film moves upward along the pipe wall and gas phase moves upward, occupying the majority of the central part of the pipes, and forming a gas core, in both flow regimes. In the pre-combustion environment, fuels for future high-speed aircrafts are predicted to take on increasing heat loads in their role as the primary coolant in order to remove excess heat from engine subsystems. While acting in this role, these fuels are expected to experience temperatures and pressures up to 700 °C and 130 atm, conditions which are supercritical for jet fuels and most hydrocarbons. Such extreme conditions can cause fuel decomposition and subsequent pyrolytic reactions, which can lead to the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). This work presents a decision-making framework for global optimization of detailed renewable energy processes considering technological uncertainty. The critical uncertain sources are identified with an efficient computational method for global sensitivity analysis, and are obtained in two different ways, simultaneously and independently per product pathway respect to the objective function. For global optimization, the parallel stochastic response surface method developed by Regis & Shoemaker (2009) is employed. Wellbore stability analysis acts an important role in the drilling design to avoid pipe-stuck, lost circulation and the other instability-induced problems. However, the conventional linear elastic model used by the industry is too conservative in predicting the mud weight window. This project is aimed at improving the accuracy of wellbore stability analysis. An elastoplastic model with Drucker-Prager yield criterion featured by strain hardening is proposed to characterize the rock behavior. Object-oriented finite element analysis simulator, NSMOOM, is programmed in MATLAB.
