A non-human transgenic mammalian animal, as described above, contains an exogenous double stranded DNA sequence stably integrated into the genome of the animal, which comprises cis-acting regulatory units operably linked to a DNA sequence encoding human Factor VIII protein and a signal peptide, where the cis-acting regulatory units are active in mammary gland cells and the signal peptide is active in directing newly expressed Factor VIII into the milk of the animal. This paper highlights some of the major findings of the Alkali Deposits Investigation, a collaborative effort to understand the causes of unmanageable ash deposits in biomass-fired electric power boilers. A group of interested industrial institutions and the US DOE Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Office's Biomass Power Program through the National Renewable Energy Laboratory jointly sponsored the project. Properties of biomass relevant to combustion are briefly reviewed. The compositions of biomass among fuel types are variable, especially with respect to inorganic constituents important to the critical problems of fouling and slagging. Alkali and alkaline earth metals, in combination with other fuel elements such as silica and sulfur, and facilitated by the presence of chlorine, are responsible for many undesirable reactions in combustion furnaces and power boilers. Reductions in the concentrations of alkali metals and chlorine, created by leaching the elements from the fuel with water, yield remarkable improvements in ash fusion temperatures and confirm much of what is …

Separating the functions of current collection and gas flow distribution and then to design two separate elements to achieve the desired performance characteristics, a nonconventional cell structure for proton exchange membrane fuel cells bave been developed. The current collector is achieved using a thin stain steel sheet, the gas flow distribution is achieved using a carbon paper that has the desired chemical durabiliy when in contact with the proton exchange membrane. A reaction kinetic study for electrochemical oxidation of benzene was performed on a PbO2 rotating disk electrode in 1 mol/L H2SO4 aqueous solution. The reaction orders, the activation energies and transfer coefficient were measured, and the kinetic expression was obtained.

There exist two oxidation current peaks on the anodic polarization curve between -0.7 V and 0 V (SCE) in Na-hypophosphite solution. Peak Ⅰ (-0.55 V, SCE) , which represents the oxidation process from H2PO2- to H2PO3-, has been studied previously. Peak Ⅱ, which is located at the potential about -0.4 V (SCE), is investigated emphatically in this paper. A new polymer E-T was synthesized and used as a corrosion inhibitor for reinforced concrete. The inhibitive behavior and mechanism were studied with linear polarization, Tafel polarization, EIS and XPS method in simulated pore solution system with concrete samples. The result showed that the polymer was a mixing type inhibitor. A 1% dosage was sufficient to imhibit the corrosion of steel in simulated pore solution system. The salt endurance was enhanced from 0.02 mol/L to 0.10 mol/L. The result also showed the good synergetic effect of NaNO2, especially in low NaNO2 concentration. The EIS showed that E-T …

The surface of the spherical nickel hydroxide particles used as an active material in pasted nickel electrodes is surface-deposited with cobalt. This paper investigated the effects of the amount of cobalt deposit on the characteristics of nickel hydroxide electrode. The performances of the electrode, such as discharge capacity, utilization of active material and reversibility of Ni(OH)2/NiOOH redox reaction, were studied by comparing the charging/discharging curves and cyclic voltammograms. The mechanism of action of cobalt deposits has been described in terms of the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of nickel hydroxide electrode.

Photorespiration rates under air-equilibrated conditions (0.04% CO2 and 21% O2) were measured in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii wild-type 2137, a phosphoglycolate-phosphatase-deficient (pgpl) mutant and a suppressor double mutant (7FR2N) derived from the pgpl mutant. In both cells grown under 5% CO2 and adapted air for 24 h in the suppressor double mutant, the maximal rate of photorespiration (phosphoglycolate synthesis) was only about half of that in either the wild type or the pgpl mutant (18-7F) cells. In the progeny, the reduced rate of photorespiration was accompanied by increased photosynthetic affinity for inorganic carbon and the capacity for growth …

The possibility of obtaining an accurate site-site potential model suitable for use in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of methane from ab initio calculations has been explored. Counterpoise-corrected (CPC), supermolecule, ab initio energies at the MP2/6-311 + G(2df,2pd) level were computed for eleven relative orientations of two methane molecules as a function of C-C separation distance. C-C, C-H, and H-H interaction parameters in a pairwise-additive, site-site potential model for rigid methane molecules were regressed from the ab initio energies, and the resultant model accurately reproduced the ab initio energies. The model suggests that C-H attractions are dominant in weakly binding the …

The invention further encompasses an electrically conductive composite which includes the aforementioned thermoplastic and metal, wherein the metal represents at least about 30% by volume, based on the total volume of the composite. The composite is formed from the paste under elevated temperature. The paste is employed in processes which involve electrically connecting electrical and electronic components under process conditions which convert the paste to the composite.

The present study was carried out to 1) evaluate the viability of in vitro fertilized zygotes after microinjection of DNA, 2) assess the influence of oocyte quality upon the development rate of embryos when injected with DNA, and 3) determine the integration frequency of green fluorescent protein DNA into microinjected embryos. Oocytes were aspirated from ovaries of nine nonlactating Holsteins and were categorized into grades A, B, C, and D. At 16 h after in vitro fertilization, approximately half of the pronuclear stage presumptive zygotes were classified as having 1 pronucleus or 2 pronuclei, and they were microinjected with DNA …

Titanium tetrachioride and ammonia were used as precursors in a Jow pressure chemical vapor deposition process to deposit titanium nitride films on silicon wafers. The process was carried out at temperatures from 450 to 850 C and the activation energy for the reaction was determined. The order of the reaction, with respect to the partial pressures of the reactant gases, was determined by carrying out the reaction at varying partial pressures of the reactant gases. Remediation of sites contaminated with hazardous wastes could be an expensive endeavor. There is, therefore, the need to explore techniques, which can reduce the remediation time and achieve regulatory specifications, thus reducing the cost involved in a site remediation exercise.
In this work, we investigated the use of sonic energy to enhance the in situ removal rate of trichloroethylene and dichloroethylene from a site in Hillsborough Township. New Jersey. The wave equations for the interior and exterior of the particles are ensemble averaged and combined with an analysis by Allegra and Hawley @J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 51, 1545 ~1972!# for the interaction of a single particle with the incident wave to determine the phase speed and attenuation of sound waves propagating through dilute slurries. The theory is shown to compare very well with the measured attenuation. The inverse problem, i.e., the problem of determining the particle size distribution given the attenuation as a function of frequency, is examined using regularization techniques that have been successful for bubbly liquids. A simple, sensitive, rapid (3 min), and highly reproducible solid-phase assay for the detection of proteins in the low nanogram range (4 ng) is described. The assay is based on differential Pon-ceau S staining of the protein spots on nitrocellulose and quantification of the protein- dye com-plexes on lubricated membranes using a densitometer. The dye solution used for protein stain-ing contained 0.1% Ponceau S in 15% phosphoric acid and 10% ethanol. Compressive strength is the most widely used design parameter in the construction industry and in rock engineering. For example, Bieniawski [Bieniawski, Z.T., Estimating the strength of rock materials, Is. J. S. Afr. Inst. Min. Metall., 1974, 74, 312-320.] reported that mining engineers request the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) more often than any other rock property. However, standards set for specimen preparation are very demanding. Therefore, it is quite difficult and sometimes impossible to fulfill these requirements using weak rocks and especially shales. A single pulsed laser beam containing multiple wavelengths (wavelength multiplexing) is employed to activate two semiconductor antennas in series. The dielectric nature of the semiconductors permits serial cascading of the antenna elements. Recently observed nonlinear characteristics of the radiated field as a function of the free carrier accelerating (bias) voltage are used to minimize the small interactions between elements. We demonstrate that the temporal electromagnetic radiation distribution of two serial antennas is sensitive to the three-dimensional pattern of the optical excitation source. One can, in turn, vary this distribution continuously by optical means to reconfigure the array.

This work summarizes numerical results for a diffusion flame formed from a cylindrical tube fuel injector, issuing a gaseous methane jet vertically in a quiescent atmosphere. The primary objective is to predict the flame base height and other flame characteristics as a function of the fuel jet velocity. A finite volume scheme is used to discretize the time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for the reacting flow resulting from the turbulent fuel jet motion. The turbulent stresses, and heat and mass fluxes are computed from a Reynolds stress turbulence model. A chemical kinetics model involving two-step chemistry is employed for the oxidation of …

Porous carbon-carbon preforms, based on three-dimensional networks of PAN (Polyacrylonitrile)-based carbon fibers and various volume fractions of chemical vapor-deposited (CVD) carbon, were impregnated by oxygen-free, high-conductivity (OFHC) Cu, Cu-6Si-0.9Cr, and Cu-0.3Si-0.3Cr (wt pct) alloys by pressure infiltration casting. The obtained composites were characterized for their coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and thermal conductivity (K) along the through-thickness and two in-plane directions. One composite, with a 28 vol pct Cu-0.3Si-0.3Cr alloy, showed outstanding potential for thermal management applications in electronic applications. 13C NMR spectroscopy has been shown to be an important tool in the characterization of coal structure. Important quantitative information about the carbon skeletal structure is obtained through 13C NMR spectral analysis of coal. Solid-state 13C NMR analysis techniques have progressed beyond the mere determination of aromaticity and can now describe features such as the number of aromatic carbons per cluster and the number of attachments per aromatic cluster. A one-dimensional mathematical model of a spirally wound lithium/thionyl chloride primary battery is developed and used for parameter estimation and design studies. The model formulation is based on the fundamental conservation laws using porous electrode theory and concentrated solution theory. The model is used to estimate the transference number, the diffusion coefficient, and the kinetic parameters for the reactions at the anode and the cathode as a function of temperature. These parameters are obtained by fitting the simulated capacity and average cell voltage to experimental data over a wide range of temperatures (–55 to 49°C) and discharge loads (10-250 ). …

A complex impedance model for spherical particles was used to determine the lithium ion diffusion coefficient in graphite as a function of the state of charge (SOC) and temperature. The values obtained range from of 1.12 × 10–10 to 6.51 × 10–11 cm2/s at 25°C for 0 and 30% SOC, respectively, and for 0% SOC, the value at 55°C was 1.35 × 10–10 cm2/s. The conventional potentiostatic intermittent titration technique (PITT) and Warburg impedance approaches were also evaluated, and the advantages and disadvantages of these techniques were exposed
