Electrocoagulation For Sulfate Removal, Hailey Marie Dunsworth May 2015

Electrocoagulation For Sulfate Removal, Hailey Marie Dunsworth

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

In the United States, one of the major rising issues is water shortage, especially in Western, inland states with arid climates. Not only do deficiencies exist for potable water, but for irrigation and agricultural purposes as well. Currently, the Brackish Groundwater National Desalination Research Facility in Alamogordo, New Mexico has four separate wells that are being used for experimentation. A major concern is that a considerable amount of this water can be used as another reliable source for potable water if treated. The WERC-A-HOLICS have identified two possible methods to alleviate this problem. Electrocoagulation (EC) is a technology useful for …

Radiative Cooling To The Night Sky, Alexander R. Enderlin May 2015

Radiative Cooling To The Night Sky, Alexander R. Enderlin

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Silicon wafer fabrication facilities require a significant amount of temperate cooling water to meet high internal cooling loads. The tertiary chilled water systems operate year round to fulfil the constant cooling load needed for production. Conventional chillers require a large amount of electricity to cool the water by the vapor compression cycle. As energy costs increase and environmental stewardship becomes the norm in industry, sustainable technologies are needed to chill process cooling water without the significant energy consumption of today’s chillers. Night sky radiation cools a medium by radiating heat from a warm medium to the colder night sky. The …

Impregnation And Adsorption Of Rare Earth Elements On Amberlite Xad-7, Bobby G. Hampton

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Beads were washed then impregnated with an organophosphorous extractant D2EHPA. The washing process, as well as factors in the impregnation process were studied. Water was deemed sufficient to prewash the beads before use over small and large amounts of acid with acetone. The impregnation of beads at an Amberlite D2EHPA ratio of 1:1 was determined to be best. Absorption isotherms of Neodymium were the first to be studied. By testing different concentrations, Amberlite was determined to absorb the max amount at 4000 ppm. The pH values from 2-7 were determined to have no effect on the amount of Neodymium absorbed …

Separatome Of Escherichia Coli Analysis Of Deae Chromatography As Ph Of Loading Changes, Rita E. Tejada Vaprio

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Recombinant DNA technology is used to produce therapeutics in host organisms and undergoes several purification steps before it can be used by the end user. Escherichia coli which has been widely studied has been the microorganism of choice mainly because of its low production costs. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the optimal conditions to purify a protein of interest with antifungal properties. Varying the loading pH alters the overall charge of both the target protein and host cell proteins (HCPs). Identifying genomic proteins that remain bound regardless of loading pH on DEAE columns will guide future …

Use Of Peptoid Microspheres To Improve Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (Elisa) Microarray For Early Cancer Detection, Valerie Del Carmen Reyez Loayza

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The pursuit of an efficient and economical technique for early detection of cancer has led to the development of sophisticated biosensors for antigen analysis. As biosensors become more complex, coatings are necessary and important. The preferred coatings need to have the following properties: high surface area for binding, resistance to biofouling, and flexible synthesis. The focus of this project is to determine whether using peptoid microsphere-coated glass slides in the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) microarray technique is better than using commercially available glass slides. Current microarray slides are coated with reactive groups, such as amines, epoxides, or aldehydes. It …

Recycling Wastewater For Hydraulic Fracturing By Use Of Nanofiltration Membranes, Haley D. Cleous

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Hydraulic fracturing creates large volumes of produced water, contaminated with organics, suspended solids, and dissolved minerals. This water must either be disposed of in injection wells or treated for reuse. One option is to use a combination of ultrafiltration and nanofiltration to treat this water and reuse it in future hydraulic fracturing wells. The object of this study was to test and characterize commercial nanofiltration membranes. The work done for this project will lead to future work in modifying membranes to improve the rejection of desired components.

Fluorescence Imaging Of Microdialysis Sampling, Jordan Leigh Haynie May 2014

Fluorescence Imaging Of Microdialysis Sampling, Jordan Leigh Haynie

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Many biomolecules including proteolytic enzymes known as matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are released when a material, such as a microdialysis probe, is implanted in a living organism. The MMPs cleave structural protein components of the extracellular matrix and play an important role in biological functions such as wound healing.1-3 Many enzymatic substrates for MMPs have fluorescent product mimics, and the mimics can be used as agents to monitor biochemical processes.1 In this study, microdialysis, a minimally invasive sampling technique, was combined with fluorescence imaging to determine the possibility of monitoring microdialysis in real-time, and thus provide a method that could ultimately …

A Peptoid-Based Targeted Drug Delivery System For The Treatment Of Metastatic Cancer, Hugh M. Purdy May 2014

A Peptoid-Based Targeted Drug Delivery System For The Treatment Of Metastatic Cancer, Hugh M. Purdy

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Development of a targeted drug delivery system is a critical step in the effort to improve cancer treatments. Such a system would greatly reduce the harmful side effects of chemotherapy by delivering toxic drugs directly to cancerous cells. Peptoids—synthetic compounds that can be easily produced from readily available amine monomers—have great potential for use in targeted drug delivery. This project aimed to develop peptoids that would bind to specific proteins expressed on the surface of cancer cells. These peptoids could be combined into a complex that would bind to the proteins with an even greater affinity than the individual compounds. …

Characterization Of An Affitoid Variable Region To Be Used For Mdm-2 Detection In Elisa Microarray, Graham Reinhard May 2013

Characterization Of An Affitoid Variable Region To Be Used For Mdm-2 Detection In Elisa Microarray, Graham Reinhard

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) microarray using peptoid-based affinity reagents, referred to as affitoids, is potentially a very powerful tool for the early detection of cancer and other complex diseases. Current detection methods for cancer are inadequate because most are imaging techniques and require that the cancer has progressed far enough for growths to be visible, which is often far too late for treatment to be effective. One possible way to overcome this issue is to use a biological detection technique that is able to detect proteins that are secreted specifically by cancerous cells (referred to as biomarkers). These biomarkers …

International Environmental Design Contest Task: Hyrdaulic Fracturing Fluid Hydrocarbon Removal As A Reverse Osmosis Pretreatment, Elisabeth Yates

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Natural gas is useful in several different applications from chemical feed stock, to energy and fuel source. In the past it has been too expensive to be properly taken advantage of, but in recent years technology advancements have made it a rather cheap commodity. However, these advancements, hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, come at an additional cost. They require massive amounts of water, approximately 7,000,000 gallons per well drilled. After use, this water is laden with salts and dangerous hydrocarbons. In order for the water to be recycled or reused, both components must be removed. Reverse osmosis membranes are commonly …

Protein Isolation Using Peptoid Based Affinity Chromatography, Megan Dunn May 2013

Protein Isolation Using Peptoid Based Affinity Chromatography, Megan Dunn

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Protein purification is essential for advancements in biotechnology. There are several different methods employed in purifying a particular protein from a complex sample such as a cell lysate. These methods take advantage of differences in the size, charge or binding affinity of the protein. One such method is affinity chromatography which utilizes the binding affinity of a protein toward a certain ligand to purify a protein. This is usually used as a final step to extract the desired protein after the mixture has undergone other purification steps to remove unwanted materials. The goal of this project was to develop a …
