In this study, thermal performance of heat pump cycles is analyzed by employing several equations of state. The analysis presented here is particularly useful for applications where refrigerant properties need to be calculated from a thermodynamic equation of state. Such a situation, for example, would arise during a long-term numerical simulation of a solar-assisted heat pump system. In these cases, the direct use of thermodynamic property tables of refrigerants would not be possible in a computational procedure. The approach of using equations of state to predict thermodynamic properties is also useful for applications where new refrigerants or blends of refrigerants …

Catalysts composed of platinum and/or palladium on tin (IV) oxide supports, with and without silica gel, as well as catalysts composed of gold on manganese oxide, have been developed for the recombination of carbon monoxide and oxygen to form carbon dioxide for use in carbon dioxide lasers. A thermogravimetric method and a differential scanning calorimetric method have been developed for the thermal characterization of these catalysts. The mass loss data and the enthalpy changes determined as the catalysts lost water were then related to existing activity data for these catalysts. The NASA Space Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (SRMS), due to its long reach and light weight construction has significant structural flexibility. Thus any routine use of SRMS often results in large amplitude oscillations with long settling time. A passive damping technique utilizing a constrained viscoelastic layer damping treatment has been proposed to augment the active control of these oscillations in order to enhance the system stability and the end effector positional accuracy. Hydrogen passivation of deep traps in diamond is demonstrated. Current‐voltage (I‐V) characteristics of polycrystalline thin film and bulk diamond were studied before and after hydrogenation. On hydrogenation, all the samples showed several orders of magnitude increase in conductivity. Hydrogenation was carried out under controlled conditions to study the changes in the I‐V characteristics of the samples. The concentration of uncompensated traps was varied systematically by hydrogenation. The concentration of electrically active hydrogen was determined from the I‐V data. It is shown that hydrogenation is an alternative to deep‐level transient spectroscopy, suitable for …

This paper presents an experimental study to characterize the compressible turbulent boundary layer produced along a flat plate in the NASA Langley 8-Foot High Temperature Tunnel and determine the test conditions necessary to achieve equilibrium turbulence. In addition, the present study extends the data base for equilibrium compressible turbulent boundary layers over quasi-isothermal walls which are far from the adiabatic wall temperature. The measurements consist of pilot pressure, static pressure, and total temperature distributions in the boundary layer. Commercial films of polyetherimide (PEI), polyetheretherimide (PEEI), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polycarbonate (PC) were exposed in vacuum to l 00-keV electron radiation to total absorbed doses of l, l 0, l 00, 300, and 500 kilograys. The concentration of radiation-generated radicals, as measured by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), increased by over an order of magnitude in all four polymers. Correspondingly, the intensity of the infrared absorption peaks increased uniformly for all doses. Solubility tests resulted in decreased solubility in all polymers. IR, EPR, and solubility suggest dehydrogenation of the aliphatic C-H and phenyl C-H sites. The data indicated that cross …

1H-2,3-dimethylpyrrolo(1,2-a) benzimidazol-l-one (27) and 1H,9H- 2,3,7,8-tetramethyl-bispyrrolo(1,2-a:6,7-a')benzodiimidazo1-1,9-dione (32) have been synthesized from dimethylmaleic anhydride and o-phenylenediamine and 1,2,4,5-tetraaminobenzene, respectively. The presence of reactive olefinic double bonds in the synthesized compounds was of interest as a site for possible addition polymerization.
The synthetic route involved, in both cases, a simple nucleophilic substitution reaction between the diamine(or tetraamine) and the anhydride to form an intermediate amide-acid-amine which rapidly cyclized to the imide amine. The final ring closure required more rigorous conditions and occurred at melt reaction temperatures.

Further refinements are made in the method of calculating amounts of carbon dioxide released to the atmosphere through the combustion of fossil fuels. Data available in the UN Statistical Yearbook are used as the basic sources rather than the summary, World Energy Supplies, U.N. Statistical Papers, Series J because the most recent data are available several months earlier in the yearbook and because data are included for natural gasoline, natural gas liquids, and cement production. A study was undertaken to determine the general applicability of a temperature measurement technique which uses the fluorescence stimulated by a vacuum ultraviolet continuum as the indicator. This study was directed toward determining the temperature of nonradiating carbon monoxide. A number of ultraviolet radiation sources which produced high intensity in the region of l,150 A were investigated. This study led to the conclusion that the technique was not applicable to measurements in carbon monoxide within the present limits of' detectability.
