Production Of Polyhydroaxyalkanoate (Pha) From Palm Oil By Pseudomonas Oleovorans And Indigenous Bacterial Isolate, Pseudomonas Sp., Zazali Alias

In this study, the yield of biomass and polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) of Pseudomonas oleovorans grown in batch and fed-batch cultivations were compared. When oleic acid (QA) (0.5% w/v) was used as carbon source, a significant increase in biomass.and PHA content were observed through fedbatch cultivation. The biomass and PHA content obtained from batch cultivation were 1.45±0.19 g/I and 2.50±0.77 % cell dry weight (CDW) respectively, while in the fed-batch cultivation, the biomass and PHA content increased significantly to 3.35±0.78 g/I and 32.72±0.30 %CDW respectively. An inexpensive carrier matrix. vermiculite was used for immobilizing urease. A cost effective and simple method of coupling was developed using vermiculite. Immobilization of urease on Amberlite MB-land Nylon-6 tube were also studied. Activities of free and immobilized urease were studied and compared: Among all methods used for immobilization of urease. the method of coupling the enzyme to vermiculite gave the highest retained activity of 82% (Method I) and 89% (Method 2) at pH 6.0 and 5.5 respectively. Purple membrane (PM, λ" role="presentation">λmax" role="presentation">max 570 nm) of H. halobium on treatment with sulphuric acid changes its colour to blue (λ" role="presentation">λmax" role="presentation">max 608 nm). The purple chromophore can be regenerated from the blue chromophore by exogeneous addition of anions such as CI−" role="presentation">− and HPO42−" role="presentation">2−4. Chloride ion is found to be more effective than the dibasic phosphate ion in regenerating the purple chromophore. Nevertheless, one thing common to the anion regeneration is that both CI−" role="presentation">− and HPO42−" role="presentation">2−4 show marked pH effect. At pH 1.0 the efficiency of …

Changes in wet end of alkaline papermaking affect the size development as well as sizing loss. These changes include pH, alkalinity and type of filler used. Precipitated and ground varieties of carbonate fillers and the alkalinity associated with · them are believed to be the causes for the gradual sizing loss in alkaline papers due the accelerated hydrolysis reaction of sizing chemicals at higher alkalinity.

Most studies on the biological activity of selenium have focused on its role at the active site in the ubiquitous enzyme, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) which catalyzes the removal of hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides (1). A connection between selenium deficiency and a wide range of diseases in animals and humans has been reviewed (2). Development of various forms of human cancer (3), failure of the immune system (4), as well as some cardiovascular diseases (5) have been reported or suspected to correlate with selenium deficiency.
