Since the release of the SEDIMOT II model, the Agricultural Engineering Department has taught approximately 300 consulting and mining engineers, reclamation specialists, government agency personnel, and academia. The program is being used on all types of computer systems, company owned as well as time sharing vendors. Over 50 firms are using the HP3000 system of the College of Agriculture at the University of Kentucky under arrangements with the Institute for Mining and Minerals Research, Office of Informational Services and Technical Liaison.

A major operating problem that has occurred in recycle flush lagoon systems is the buildup of a crystalline solid in the recycle pipelines, pump, flush devices, and concrete gutters. The major crystalline solid has been identified as magnesium ammonium phosphate -- Mg(NH4)PO4. There have been a couple of reports of other types of phosphate salts of calcium and magnesium. All the cases of salt buildup in the recycle lines of swine flushing systems that have been investigated in Kentucky were found to be magnesium ammonium phosphate.

Modern swine production confinement systems have brought about significant improvements in the quantity and quality of meat products for human consumption. This has been achieved because of the ability to maintain good environmental conditions and to apply sound management techniques, therefore, allowing the animals to achieve maximum performance. The purpose of the survey was to evaluate the use of energy conservation measures and alternate energy sources by Kentucky agricultural land owners. Specifically, the objectives were to determine:

A liquid manure system produces 4 gases which are potentially hazardous to workers and animals. The decomposing manure slowly releases these gases into the liquid and the surrounding atmosphere. During agitation of the manure large quantities of gas are released into the air. Tragic human deaths and animal losses have occurred during agitation or from humans entering the pit areas.

Over the past two years, there have been several changes in the Power & Machinery requirements of, and in the procedures for, obtaining permits for animal-waste holding structures. The Division of Water (DOW) in the Department for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection (DNREP), which administers the Kentucky Water Pollution Law (KRS 224), has determined that the statutes require them to review and to approve all agricultural animal-waste-holding facilities constructed in Kentucky (KRS 224.033(19)). Because of their review, they have simplified the procedures and brought the requirements for waste disposal systems into agreement with the state law. At the present time, …

In the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the Division of Waste Management (DWM) of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection (DNP & EP) has the responsibility of regulating the hazardous waste program. A policy statement from the DWM was issued on June 9, 1981, concerning wastes generated from agricultural operations, i.e., farming. In summary, the statutory definition of a hazardous waste does not apply to animal manures and crop residues that are returned to the soil as a fertilizer or as a soil conditioner. During the summer, temperatures in swine buildings often rise to levels that adversely affect animal performance and the profitability of these operations. Heat stress reduces reproductive efficiency in the breeding herd, affecting both the boar and sow. During extended hot weather periods, death of farrowing sows may result.

This field study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of an evaporative pad cooler for modifying the environment in a gestation house in Kentucky and to compare the measured results with the calculated performance of evaporative cooling systems. The building used in the study was a 68-crate gestation house, as described in Figure 1. The building was oriented east-west and was well insulated. There were no windows in the facility. It was fully occupied, throughout the study, with sows with an average weight of 350 lbs. A negative pressure system was used to ventilate the building with a 36" single-speed …
