The study of seed dispersal between the widely separated forest patches (forest islands) of the eastern Great Plains can contribute to understanding effects of deforestation in the more complex forest island landscapes of the eastern United States. In the East, there is growing concern that the dissection of regional forests and the creation of small forest islands surrounded by non-forest uses (e.g., agriculture) may be affecting plant species richness and developmental patterns of vegetation (Levenson 1976), as has already been noted in the tropics (Gomezpompa et al. 1972). This bulletin describes nutrient and energy composition of beef cattle waste fractions as a function of the ration roughage level and type of feedlot. Results can be used to plan engineering system approaches and research to develop handling and processing equipment necessary for recovery of the most valuable portion of waste.

In any plan for the development of water and land resources, hydrology must be a basic consideration. Because of the Missouri River Basin's large size and the many associated variations in hydrologic characteristics, hydrology is of special significance.
The Missouri River drains an area of approximately 530,000 square miles, and it is the longest river in the United States (2,315 miles). Although there are some data in the literature for the solubility of uranyl nitrate in water, the discrepancy of these data indicated the necessity for a check on the measurements. We have measured the solubility from the incongruent melting point of the hexahydrate at about 60° to the melting point of the dihydrate at 184°. Our results show a lower solubility than that given in most of the earlier data and also indicate an incongruent melting point for the trihydrate rather than the congruent point inferred in some of the previous work. Fluctuation in the number of farms since the start of the century reflects economic trends, drouth effects and the results of increasing mechanization, particularly since 1935.
The 1945 figures also show the influence of land taken out of production for use as air bases, ordnance plants and ammuition depots. No doubt some of this will be returned eventually to agricultural uses. Since the buildings were removed from this land during the war some new sets probably. will be constructed when individual ownership is obtained again. Filling a silo 30 feet or more in height with a motor as small as five horsepower has been looked upon in general by Nebraska farmers as an impractical, if not impossible, procedure. The practice is not unheard of in other states, and certainly the possibility of avoiding the large tractor-driven cutters and the large crews will be welcomed by those who have available service from power lines.

The condition of the corn at filling time, the rate of filling, and the length of time settling has taken place before measuring the depth of the silage, all tend to cause variations in the weight per cubic foot of the silage and in the tonnage that can be placed in a silo.
