4d Epr Oximetry Imaging For 4d Bioprinting And Tissue Engineering, Sajad Sarvari Jan 2024

4d Epr Oximetry Imaging For 4d Bioprinting And Tissue Engineering, Sajad Sarvari

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Bioprinting, akin to 3D printing, employs cell-laden hydrogels such as GelMA (Gelatine Methacrylate) and Alginate instead of plastic or resin to create biological structures. The printing process followed by subsequent tissue maturation is known as 4D bioprinting, where the fourth dimension is time. Ensuring adequate and consistent oxygen, O2, supply within 3D bioprint volume over the entire maturation period process is crucial, as even transient hypoxia can impact cellular behavior and phenotypes. However, printing of fully developed vasculature remains an unresolved technical challenge. Several approaches to chemically (peroxides) or biologically (photosynthesis) generate oxygen during bioprint maturation have been proposed. However, …

Aggregation-Induced Emission Probe For Alzheimer's Detection And Treatment Screening, Gemini Ramlo Jan 2024

Aggregation-Induced Emission Probe For Alzheimer's Detection And Treatment Screening, Gemini Ramlo

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The proposed project is to research if ROF-2, an aggregation-induced emitter, can be used to screen medications for Alzheimer's Disease and to accurately detect this disease, along with its progression. This will be done through multiple incubation periods using different identifiers that have already been solidified within Alzheimer's research to prove its ability and accuracy within screening and detection regarding this disease.

Implementing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles To Collect Human Gait Data At Distance And Altitude For Identification And Re-Identification, Donn E. Bartram Jan 2024

Implementing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles To Collect Human Gait Data At Distance And Altitude For Identification And Re-Identification, Donn E. Bartram

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Gait patterns are a class of biometric information pertaining to the way a person moves and poses. Gait information is unique to each person and can be used to identify and reidentify people. Historically, this task has been achieved through the use of multiple ground-based imaging sensors. However, as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) advance, they present the opportunity to evolve the process of persons identification and re-identification. Collecting human gait data using UAVs at distances ranging from 20m to 500m and altitudes ranging from 0m to 120m is a challenging task. The current biometric data collection methods, primarily designed for …

Multi-Magnetic Material Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Coils Development And Electric Field Measurement & Modeling Using Machine Learning, Mohannad Tashli Jan 2024

Multi-Magnetic Material Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Coils Development And Electric Field Measurement & Modeling Using Machine Learning, Mohannad Tashli

Theses and Dissertations

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a safe, effective, and non-invasive therapy for treating several psychiatric and neurological disorders. TMS is Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved treatment and is commonly applied to patients who do not respond to medications for the treatment of clinical depression, smoking cessation, obsessive-compulsive disorder and migraine. Recently, there has been an increase in the development of electromagnetic neuromodulation techniques targeted at enhancing the effectiveness of TMS devices for the treatment of mental diseases. In TMS stimulation, focality is an important factor which determines the specificity of the pulses induced in different brain tissues. The electromagnetic …

Optimizing Transcranial Focused Ultrasound: Calibration, Neuro Navigation, And Bold Fmri Evidence Of Neuromodulation, Amilcar J. Malave Jan 2024

Optimizing Transcranial Focused Ultrasound: Calibration, Neuro Navigation, And Bold Fmri Evidence Of Neuromodulation, Amilcar J. Malave

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis presents the development, calibration, and initial implementation of transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) for neuromodulation in a human study. The primary objectives were to design a system capable of delivering precise and safe ultrasound stimulation to targeted brain regions and to conduct preliminary trials to assess its effects on brain activity. A custom calibration device was developed to ensure accurate measurement of acoustic pressure, addressing challenges such as voltage alterations caused by changes in system impedance. Additionally, a neuro-navigation tool was created to facilitate precise targeting of the right subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (right sgACC), enabling accurate placement of …

Advancements In Sarcoma- And Nerve-Specific Fluorescence Imaging For Surgical Guidance, Kendra A. Hebert Jan 2024

Advancements In Sarcoma- And Nerve-Specific Fluorescence Imaging For Surgical Guidance, Kendra A. Hebert

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Fluorescence guided surgery (FGS) is an evolving field that aims to improve patient outcomes by using fluorophores to identify important tissues during surgery, such as tumors and nerves. In this thesis work, we explored different methods of identifying nerve and tumor tissues for FGS and a novel fluorescence-based method to determine the depths of these structures.

Researchers have explored using fluorescence guided surgery for surgical resection of cancerous tissues, including recent work by our group focusing on identifying soft tissue sarcomas with ABY-029, an epidermal growth factor receptor targeting probe. However, our preclinical and clinical work shows no single reporter …

Domain Adaptive Federated Learning For Multi-Institution Molecular Mutation Prediction And Bias Identification, W. Farzana, M. A. Witherow, I. Longoria, M. S. Sadique, A. Temtam, K. M. Iftekharuddin Jan 2024

Domain Adaptive Federated Learning For Multi-Institution Molecular Mutation Prediction And Bias Identification, W. Farzana, M. A. Witherow, I. Longoria, M. S. Sadique, A. Temtam, K. M. Iftekharuddin

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Deep learning models have shown potential in medical image analysis tasks. However, training a generalized deep learning model requires huge amounts of patient data that is usually gathered from multiple institutions which may raise privacy concerns. Federated learning (FL) provides an alternative to sharing data across institutions. Nonetheless, FL is susceptible to a few challenges including inversion attacks on model weights, heterogenous data distributions, and bias. This study addresses heterogeneity and bias issues for multi-institution patient data by proposing domain adaptive FL modeling using several radiomics (volume, fractal, texture) features for O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) classification across multiple institutions. The proposed …
