Accurate single-cell segmentation of cytoplasm from nucleus in autofluorescence images is critical for quantifying cellular metabolism using the optical redox ratio (FAD / FAD+NAD(P)H). However, automated cytoplasmic segmentation of T cell two-photon excitation fluorescence images remains challenging due to low signal-to-noise ratio, small cell size, and variability in cell brightness across imaging conditions. Here, we present a pipeline combining a custom-trained Cellpose-SAM model with an adapted cytoplasmic post-processing algorithm (CPPA) for automated single-cell metabolic analysis of T cell NAD(P)H autofluorescence images. Raw 2048×2048 pixel images were spatially binned 4×4 in MATLAB to improve signal-to-noise ratio and reduce processing time. A …

Accurately diagnosing appendicitis remains a significant challenge in emergency medicine due to its varied clinical presentation and overlap with other abdominal conditions. Existing diagnostic models often rely on unimodal data, such as computed tomography (CT) images or clinical notes, limiting their ability to capture the full complexity of patient information. This study proposes a novel multimodal framework, a Unified Adaptive Cross-Attention Multimodal Framework (u-ACM), that integrates CT images and clinical notes using hybrid fusion strategies to improve diagnostic accuracy for appendicitis. The u-ACM leverages adaptive contextual filtering to dynamically remove irrelevant features, crossattention mechanisms to align features between modalities, and …

Protein structure prediction produces atomic models from its amino acid sequence. Three-dimensional structures are important for understanding the function mechanism of proteins. Knowing the structure of a given protein is crucial in drug development design of novel enzymes. AlphaFold2 is a protein structure prediction tool with good performance in recent CASP competitions. Phenix is a tool for determination of a protein structure from a high-resolution 3D molecular image. Recent development of Phenix shows that it is capable to refine predicted models from AlphaFold2, specifically the poorly predicted regions, by incorporating information from the 3D image of the protein. The goal …

Currently, portable x-ray examinations do not employ automatic exposure control (AEC). To aid in the design of a size-specific technique chart, acrylic slabs of various thicknesses are often used to estimate x-ray transmission factors for patients of various body thicknesses. This approach, while simple, does not account for patient anatomy, tissue heterogeneity, and the attenuation properties of the human body. To better account for these factors, in this work, we determined x-ray transmission factors using computational patient models that are anatomically realistic. A Monte Carlo program was developed to model a portable x-ray system. Detailed modeling was done of the …
