Human Factors Considerations In Autonomous Lethal Unmanned Aerial Systems, Kristine Kiernan
Human Factors Considerations In Autonomous Lethal Unmanned Aerial Systems, Kristine Kiernan
Aviation / Aeronautics / Aerospace International Research Conference
The United States military is committed to the development of complete autonomy in unmanned vehicles, including armed unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The design and deployment of autonomous lethal UAS raises ethical issues that have implications for human factors. System design, procedures, and training will be impacted by the advent of autonomous lethal UAS. This paper will define relevant vocabulary, review the literature on robot ethics as it applies to the military setting, discuss various perspectives in the research community, address levels of UAS autonomy, and discuss implications for operator training, responsibility, and human-machine interaction. Familiarity with these ethical issues and …

A Midsummer Night’S Dream (With Flying Robots), Robin Murphy, Dylan Shell, Amy Guerin, Brittany Duncan, Benjamin Fine, Kevin Pratt, Takis Zourntos

Seven flying robot “fairies” joined human actors in the Texas A&M production of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The production was a collaboration between the departments of Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Theater Arts. The collaboration was motivated by two assertions. First, that the performing arts have principles for creating believable agents that will transfer to robots. Second, the theater is a natural testbed for evaluating the response of untrained human groups (both actors and the audience) to robots interacting with humans in shared spaces, i.e., were believable agents created? The production used two types …

Impact Of Airline Business Models On Fuel Efficiency Of Aircraft Operations In The National Airspace System (Nas), Trisha R. Khetia
Impact Of Airline Business Models On Fuel Efficiency Of Aircraft Operations In The National Airspace System (Nas), Trisha R. Khetia
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This is a documentation of the research that has been conducted by T. Khetia of the Batten College of Engineering and Technology at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. The report summarizes fuel efficiency studies of aircraft operations in the National Airspace System (NAS).
This research was conducted to analyze the Hub-and-Spoke (H&S) system operations in the NAS and how a change in the balance of the H&S system would affect fuel efficiency metrics in the NAS. Several fuel metrics were calculated during the research in order to find out which metric would best represent the desired operation of the …
