This study introduces a BiGMM-HMM Integration Framework designed to improve predictive maintenance strategies for naval vessel propulsion systems, addressing the need for efficient and reliable operation in marine engineering applications. The framework effectively manages multimodal sensor data by leveraging a unique combination of Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) and Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) in a bidirectional architecture. It analyses the dynamic interactions between sensors and subsystems. Two preprocessing methods are evaluated: Method 1 focuses on subsystem interactions, employing divergence-based root cause analysis to identify key sensor variables by clustering of sensors and subsystems. In contrast, Method 2 processes the entire dataset …

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Wireless communication systems have experienced rapid advancements over the last decade, with 5G systems becoming the regular standards and 6G systems being under development. However, the naval ship environment still requires more study due to the special indoor characteristics of the spaces below the deck, where the metal structures strongly impact the propagation characteristics, being prone to signal degradation, dead spots, and unreliable connectivity. This paper presents the research work conducted by a team of undergraduate students from Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and Electrical Engineering Technology (EET) majors. The work was a partnership between Old Dominion University engineering programs …

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) have become very popular in recent years. GANs have proved to be successful in different computer vision tasks including image-translation, image super-resolution etc. In this paper, we have used GAN models for ship deck segmentation. We have used 2D scanned raster images of ship decks provided by US Navy Military Sealift Command (MSC) to extract necessary information including ship walls, objects etc. Our segmentation results will be helpful to get vector and 3D image of a ship that can be later used for maintenance of the ship. We applied the trained models to engineering documents provided …

Leveraging Contracting Strategies With Private Shipyards For Increasing Naval Fleet Operational Availability, Kaitlynn M. Castelle, Joseph M. Bradley, Sanjeev Gupta

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

A major rethink of NAVSEA’s shipyard contracting strategy is required to support the critical need of improving our naval fleet availability. Operational Fleet material availability is reduced when various parts of the “NAVSEA production system” operate at cross-purposes. By increasing alignment between major players (i.e., NAVSEA and the private shipyards), major improvements in delivery performance, cost, and even throughput can be realized. Developing strategies and specific actions to do so is a rich field given the current state of the system. We take an analytical as well as evidence-based approach to propose strategies that can be successful given the peculiar …

Most of the studies to explore the impact of distracted driving have been descriptive in nature; i.e. the research is conducted in naturalistic settings to evaluate the performance of the driver with and without distracters. However simulation models can also be used that predict the workload for driving tasks. Using concepts from process modeling, baseline models of driving tasks can be created for different driving sequences that include the associated fine motor, visual and cognitive human resources. These models can then be used to evaluate incidents of workload overload caused by different distracters, from both the internal and external vehicle …
