Experimental Cyber-Physical Platform For Aircraft Dynamic Response Across Subsonic To Hypersonic Regimes, Michael Poinsett, Gabriel Martinez
Experimental Cyber-Physical Platform For Aircraft Dynamic Response Across Subsonic To Hypersonic Regimes, Michael Poinsett, Gabriel Martinez
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Understanding how aircraft behavior changes across different flight regimes is essential for modern aerospace design, yet it is often limited to theoretical or purely computational analysis. This project aims to provide an experimental approach to visualize and study these dynamic changes in a more intuitive and practical way. The primary objective is to develop an experimental cyber-physical platform capable of representing aircraft dynamic response across a wide range of flight conditions, from subsonic to hypersonic regimes. The system is designed to (1) analyze how key dynamic parameters vary with changing conditions and (2) provide a physical representation of these effects …
Trim Characteristics And Its Importance, Daviel Peralta
Trim Characteristics And Its Importance, Daviel Peralta
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
This project will go into the characteristics that lead to the concept of “Trim adjustment” in aircraft by modeling and demonstrating physical principles and mathematical concepts under ideal conditions. We will derive an equation from the basic physical principles of torque and lift to demonstrate how the trim is adjusted in steady, constant velocity flow for the sake of the pilot’s ease of control and to induce stability in flight. These adjustments are considered differently with different types of aircraft; as such, we will be focusing on mono-fixed-winged aircraft with one engine and conventional helicopter designs. Both flying devices will …
Optimal Integrated Cfd-Gnc Model For Drag-Based Reentry Dynamics, Sebastian Lopez
Optimal Integrated Cfd-Gnc Model For Drag-Based Reentry Dynamics, Sebastian Lopez
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
This research focuses on optimizing the control of a drag-maneuvering, Starship-class re-entry vehicle by closely integrating high-fidelity aerodynamic data derived from Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, specifically using StarCCM+. The aerodynamic models, tailored to the unique geometry of a drag-maneuvering body, are seamlessly incorporated into a guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) framework. This integration enables closed-loop CFD simulations with real-time control feedback, allowing for direct analysis and optimization of vehicle stability, trajectory, and control demands throughout the re-entry process.
Building upon the work of Gaglio and Bevilacqua, this advanced CFD-GNC model introduces high-order aerodynamic effects, such as aerodynamic moments and …

The International Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC) is the premier collegiate high power rocketry competition in the world hosted by the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association (ESRA). The Akronauts Rocket Design team has been competing in IREC since 2015 and have won several awards. The main goal of IREC is to launch a rocket to a specified altitude of 10k, 30k, or 45k ft while carrying a payload and successfully recover with little to no damage.
The control of a typical high-powered rocket is purely passive; the center of pressure of the rocket must be behind the center of gravity with respect …
L2 Certification Rocket Launch, Seungyou Cho
L2 Certification Rocket Launch, Seungyou Cho
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
The LOC 835 high-power rocket with J275W-12 motor at Argonia, KS, for L2 certification, was auspiciously launched and returned. J means the motor can exert 640-1280 Ns of impulse, which makes a sizeable propelling sound. Even though four main hindrances occurred from the construction to the launch, the issues were revised correctly. The rail button and the tracker were severe issues, so I devised the method of drilling a hole for the rail button, but there was no way to replace a broken tracker. The wind speed on the launch day was so strong that the rocket flew 1-2 miles …
Physics-Informed Neural Network Based Aerodynamic Modeling Framework, Nathaniel E. Michek
Physics-Informed Neural Network Based Aerodynamic Modeling Framework, Nathaniel E. Michek
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Significant advances have been made in developing aerodynamic models over the years. While these advances span many modeling techniques and data collection methods, certain aerodynamic regimes still pose significant challenges. These regimes commonly occur when an aerodynamic body is under extreme flight conditions. Many of these conditions occur simultaneously in the rare and poorly understood case of a tumbling aerodynamic body. The flight of a tumbling aerodynamic body goes through the entire range of aerodynamic angles, alpha and beta, causing significant non-linearities and time-dependent effects associated with flow separation. During tumbling, the aerodynamic body simultaneously rotates about all three axes …

A high-speed, shape-transitioned, inward-turning intake was tested in Purdue’s Boeing/AFOSR Mach 6 Quiet Tunnel. The inlet model, called the Indiana Inlet (INlet), had a total contraction ratio of 4.68:1 and a design point of Mach 6 at 0° angle of attack. The model was outfitted with a suite of high-frequency pressure transducers, and the external flowfield was imaged with high-speed schlieren photography. The INlet was tested under low freestream disturbance levels for a variety of freestream unit Reynolds numbers and at-4° angle of attack. An unsteady shockwave near the leading edge of the inlet forebody, indicative of boundary layer separation, …

Computer Based Modeling For Small E-Vtol Propeller Performance, Ege Konuk
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The emerging field of urban air mobility (UAM) offers a novel transportation method for civil, commercial, and military applications. Vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) configurations present challenges for performance prediction during crucial flight operations. An advanced computational framework for predicting propeller performance in electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft during transition flight is essential for future concept designs. This research extends the Blade Element Momentum Theory (BEMT) to model propeller behavior at high incidence angles, crucial for eVTOL operation.
The study begins with a review of tilt-wing/rotor configurations for eVTOLs and tackles the complex aerodynamic phenomena associated with rotors …
Adaptive Control Of An Aeroelastic System For Active Flutter Suppression And Disturbance Rejection, Patrick Sterling Downs
Adaptive Control Of An Aeroelastic System For Active Flutter Suppression And Disturbance Rejection, Patrick Sterling Downs
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The future of aircraft design strives for lighter weight, more aerodynamically efficient structures. These improvements may come with the drawback of increased structural flexibility and elevated aeroelastic effects, often resulting in a lower flutter speed. This motivates the implementation of advanced control methods to control aeroelastic systems over a range of flight conditions, suppress and delay the onset of flutter, and compensate for disturbances, actuator dynamics, and unmodeled nonlinear dynamics.
This dissertation first develops a novel method for constructing time-domain simulation models of two and three-dimensional aeroelastic systems, resulting in models that are suitable for the implementation of state-space control …
Forced Displacement Technique For Measuring Blunt Body Aerodynamics In A Magnetic Suspension Wind Tunnel, Mark Schoenenberger, David Cox, Colin Britcher, Caleb Hull
Forced Displacement Technique For Measuring Blunt Body Aerodynamics In A Magnetic Suspension Wind Tunnel, Mark Schoenenberger, David Cox, Colin Britcher, Caleb Hull
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
The Old Dominion University/NASA Langley 6-Inch Magnetic Suspension Wind Tunnel has developed the ability to levitate blunt bodies which can oscillate freely about the yaw axis. This allows for the measurement of static and dynamic stability coefficients without sting interference. The magnetic suspension controller introduces other translational forces which affect the vehicle dynamics complicating data reduction. Exciting model oscillations in a reliable way has also been a challenge. A new test method has been developed that produces capsule oscillations from forced oscillatory translational motion at the resonant yaw oscillatory frequency of the capsule. After oscillations are excited, the translational forcing …

The design of an inward-turning, high-speed, three-dimensional streamline traced intake is presented from osculating axisymmetric theory. To satisfy the osculating intake design criteria, a stitched Busemann diffuser and Internal Conical Flow-A solution is used as the basic isentropic compressive streamline. This new contour provides efficient compression, high flow uniformity, and straight leading edge shocks of equal strength. Additionally, a novel method for constructing the inlet cowl is presented. The combined process leads to a new method of high-speed intake design. A generic shape-transitioned intake is constructed and named the Indiana Inlet for the Indiana universities that contributed to the project. …
Development And Deployment Of A Dynamic Soaring Capable Uav Using Reinforcement Learning, Jacob Adamski
Development And Deployment Of A Dynamic Soaring Capable Uav Using Reinforcement Learning, Jacob Adamski
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Dynamic soaring (DS) is a bio-inspired flight maneuver in which energy can be gained by flying through regions of vertical wind gradient such as the wind shear layer. With reinforcement learning (RL), a fixed wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) can be trained to perform DS maneuvers optimally for a variety of wind shear conditions. To accomplish this task, a 6-degreesof- freedom (6DoF) flight simulation environment in MATLAB and Simulink has been developed which is based upon an off-the-shelf unmanned aerobatic glider. A combination of high-fidelity Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in ANSYS Fluent and low-fidelity vortex lattice (VLM) …

Foundations For Finite-State Modelling Of A Two-Dimensional Airfoil That Reverses Direction, Jake Michael Oscar Welsh
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Current 3-D finite-state wake models are incapable of simulating a maneuver in which the sign of the free-stream velocity changes direction and the rotor enters its own wake -- as might occur in the case of a helicopter which ascends and then descends. It is the purpose of this work to create a 2-D finite-state wake model which is capable of handling changes in free-stream direction as a precursor to development of a 3-D model that can do the same.
The 2-D finite-state model used for reentry modifications is an existing model created by Peters, Johnson, and Karunamoorthy. By the …
Design And Flight-Path Simulation Of A Dynamic-Soaring Uav, Gladston Joseph
Design And Flight-Path Simulation Of A Dynamic-Soaring Uav, Gladston Joseph
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
We address the development of a dynamic-soaring capable unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) optimized for long-duration flight with no on-board power consumption. The UAV’s aerodynamic properties are captured with the integration of variable fidelity aerodynamic analyses. In addition to this, a 6 degree-of-freedom flight simulation environment is designed to include the effects of atmospheric wind conditions. A simple flight control system aids in the development of the dynamic soaring maneuver. A modular design paradigm is adopted for the aircraft dynamics model, which makes it conducive to use the same environment to simulate other aircraft models. Multiple wind-shear models are synthesized to …

Design And Testing Of A Feed-Forward Control System For Deployable Vortex Generators Dependent On Angle Of Attack, Solomon B. Whitmire, Christopher J. Chapanar, Kirklin M. Anderson, Nickalus R. Amon, Daniel W. Chech
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
A vortex generator (VG hereafter) is a common feature of an aircraft wing that disturbs the flow on the leading edge of the wing, thus energizing the boundary layer and reducing flow separation. For an aircraft experiencing flow separation, VGs can increase the lift-to-drag ratio of the wing and prevent stall; however, if flow separation isn’t an issue, the unnecessary frontal area of the VGs has the potential to produce parasitic drag. This study seeks to determine whether the use of a deployment system can improve the performance of VG’s by raising or lowering them depending on the angle of …

Conceptual Design Of A South Pole Carrier Pigeon Uav, Kendrick M. Dlima
Conceptual Design Of A South Pole Carrier Pigeon Uav, Kendrick M. Dlima
Master's Theses
Currently, the South Pole has a large data problem. It is estimated that 1.2 TB of data is being produced every day, but less than 500 GB of that data is being uploaded via aging satellites to researchers in other parts of the world. This requires those at the South Pole to analyze the data and carefully select the parts to send, possibly missing out on vital scientific information. The South Pole Carrier Pigeon will look to bridge this data gap.
The Carrier Pigeon will be a small unmanned aerial vehicle that will carry a 30 TB solid-state hard drive …
Aircraft Leading Edge Strakes On Conventional Naca Wings, Anthony Pirone
Aircraft Leading Edge Strakes On Conventional Naca Wings, Anthony Pirone
Discovery Day - Prescott
The prevention of stall on aircraft wings has been a great challenge over the history of airplanes. As the aircraft become more and more complex, it becomes harder to fit high lift devices and leading-edge devices onto high camber, supercritical airfoil aircraft wings. In the fighter jet class of aircraft the obstacle of stall is usually delayed by the implementation of leading-edge root extensions or strakes. Strakes create a tip vortice along the sharp leading edge that transitions over the surface of the wing preventing separation on both the upper and lower surface of the wing allowing the fighter jet …

Low-Cost Skewed Redundant Imu Configuration For State-Space Recovery In A Saturated Environment, Levi S. Hubbard
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Low-cost sensors for state space determination can be used successfully for ground vehicles, robots, unmanned aerial vehicles, and Internet-of-Things applications. When a high fidelity Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) cannot be obtained for state space determination, low-cost sensors can be used to satisfactory standards, despite their limitations in capabilities, by using various implementation techniques. The research group was experimentally investigating state space information of an unstable flying vehicle for motion simulation validation. The high fidelity motion capture system would intermittently lose track of the flight vehicle which lost critical flight data.
The goal was to determine the potential of low-cost off-the-shelf …

First Approach To Coupling Of Numerical Lifting-Line Theory And Linear Covariance Analysis For Uav State Uncertainty Propagation, Cory D. Goates, Randall S. Christensen, Robert C. Leishman
Faculty Publications
Numerical lifting-line is a computationally efficient method for calculating aerodynamic forces and moments on aircraft. However, its potential has yet to be tapped for use in guidance, navigation, and control (GN&C). Linear covariance analysis is becoming a popular GN&C design tool and shows promise for pairing with numerical lifting-line. Pairing numerical lifting-line with linear covariance analysis allows for forward propagation of state uncertainty for real-time decision making. We demonstrate this for select state variables in a drone aerial recapture situation. Linear covariance analysis uses finite difference derivatives obtained from numerical lifting-line to calculate force and moment variances. These show agreement …

Autonomous Watercraft Simulation And Programming, Nicholas J. Savino
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Automation of various modes of transportation is thought to make travel more safe and efficient. Over the past several decades advances to semi-autonomous and autonomous vehicles have led to advanced autopilot systems on planes and boats and an increasing popularity of self-driving cars. We simulated the motion of an autonomous vehicle using computational models. The simulation models the motion of a small-scale watercraft, which can then be built and programmed using an Arduino Microcontroller. We examined different control methods for a simulated rescue craft to reach a target. We also examined the effects of different factors, such as various biases …

Urban Flow And Small Unmanned Aerial System Operations In The Built Environment, Kevin A. Adkins
Urban Flow And Small Unmanned Aerial System Operations In The Built Environment, Kevin A. Adkins
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has put forth a set of regulations (Part 107) that govern small unmanned aerial system (sUAS) operations. These regulations restrict unmanned aircraft (UA) from flying over people and their operation to within visual line of sight (VLOS). However, as new applications for unmanned aerial systems (UAS) are discovered, their capabilities improve, and regulations evolve, there is an increasing desire to undertake urban operations, such as urban air mobility, package delivery, infrastructure inspection, and surveillance. This built environment poses new weather hazards that include enhanced wind shear and turbulence. The smaller physical dimensions, lower mass and …
Uas Flight Operations In Complex Terrain: Assessing The Agricultural Impact From Hurricane Maria In The Central Mountainous Region Of Puerto Rico, Kevin Adkins
Publications
Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico in September 2017 as a Category 4 storm causing major damage to infrastructure, agriculture and natural ecosystems, as well as the loss of many lives. Among the crops hardest hit was coffee, one of the most important crops in Puerto Rico. As a perennial system, coffee takes various production forms along a gradient from high shade/biodiversity coffee farms to low shade coffee monocultures and therefore offers an ideal means for the study of resistance and resilience of an agroecosystem to weather and climate disturbance. During the summer of 2018, 14 impacted farms across the production …
Design And Performance Estimation Of A Low-Reynolds Number Unmanned Aircraft System, Sean Lauderdale King
Design And Performance Estimation Of A Low-Reynolds Number Unmanned Aircraft System, Sean Lauderdale King
LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to conceptually design a fixed-wing unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) with a higher flight-time and top stable speed than comparable systems. The vehicle adheres to specifications derived from the client, the market, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). To broadly meet these requirements, the vehicle must fly for a minimum of three hours, return to the original flight path quickly if perturbed, and must be hand-launched. The vehicle designed must also have a large potential center of gravity movement to allow for customization of the planform and client customization.
An iterative design process was used …
