Swarming Reconnaissance Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles In A Parallel Discrete Event Simulation, Joshua J. Corner Mar 2004

Swarming Reconnaissance Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles In A Parallel Discrete Event Simulation, Joshua J. Corner

Theses and Dissertations

Current military affairs indicate that future military warfare requires safer, more accurate, and more fault-tolerant weapons systems. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) are one answer to this military requirement. Technology in the UAV arena is moving toward smaller and more capable systems and is becoming available at a fraction of the cost. Exploiting the advances in these miniaturized flying vehicles is the aim of this research. How are the UAVs employed for the future military? The concept of operations for a micro-UAV system is adopted from nature from the appearance of flocking birds, movement of a school of fish, and swarming …

Analysis For Cooperative Behavior Effectiveness Of Autonomous Wide Area Search Munitions, Sang M. Park

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate how a simulation model can accurately represent the performance of the autonomous wide area search munitions, and to find the effectiveness of the cooperative behavior on the autonomous munitions. Though it does not provide a practical solution for the development of the autonomous wide area search munitions, this research will show some meaningful allocations of the munitions tasks that are applicable to the development of the autonomous munitions. For the first phase, this thesis presents how accurately a simplified simulation model can represent a proposed weapon system by comparing the simulation results …

Investigation Of Cooperative Behavior In Autonomous Wide Search Munitions, Robert E. Dunkel Iii Mar 2002

Investigation Of Cooperative Behavior In Autonomous Wide Search Munitions, Robert E. Dunkel Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of wide-area search munitions in various scenarios using different cooperative behavior algorithms. The general scenario involves multiple autonomous munitions searching for an unknown number of targets of different priority in unknown locations. Three cooperative behavior algorithms are used in each scenario: no cooperation, cooperative attack only, and cooperative classification and attack. In the cooperative cases, the munitions allocate tasks on-line as a group, using linear programming techniques to determine the optimum allocation. Each munition provides inputs to the task allocation routine in the form of probabilities of successfully being able …

Mission Route Planning With Multiple Aircraft & Targets Using Parallel A* Algorithm, Ergin Sezer Mar 2000

Mission Route Planning With Multiple Aircraft & Targets Using Parallel A* Algorithm, Ergin Sezer

Theses and Dissertations

The general Mission Route Planning (MRP) Problem is the process of selecting an aircraft flight path in order to fly from a starting point through defended terrain to target(s), and return to a safe destination. MRP is a three-dimensional, multi-criteria path search. Planning of aircraft routes involves an elaborate search through numerous possibilities, which can severely task the resources of the system being used to compute the routes. Operational systems can take up to a day to arrive at a solution due to the combinatorial nature of the problem, which is not acceptable, because time is critical in aviation. Also, …

Nested Fork-Join Queuing Networks And Their Application To Mobility Airfield Operations Analysis, Craig J. Willits Mar 1997

Nested Fork-Join Queuing Networks And Their Application To Mobility Airfield Operations Analysis, Craig J. Willits

Theses and Dissertations

A single-chain nested fork-join queuing network (FJQN) model of mobility airfield ground processing is proposed. In order to analyze the queuing network model, advances on two fronts are made. First, a general technique for decomposing nested FJQNs with probabilistic forks is proposed, which consists of incorporating feedback loops into the embedded Markov chain of the synchronization station, then using Marie's Method to decompose the network. Numerical studies show this strategy to be effective, with less than two percent relative error in the approximate performance measures in most realistic cases. The second contribution is the identification of a quick, efficient method …

Optimal Formation Flight Control, Shawn B. Mccamish Dec 1995

Optimal Formation Flight Control, Shawn B. Mccamish

Theses and Dissertations

Automatic formation flight involves controlling multiple wing aircraft equipped with standard Mach-hold, altitude-hold, and heading-hold autopilots in order to maintain a desired position relative to a lead aircraft throughout formation maneuvers. Changes in the lead aircraft's states, including formation heading, velocity, altitude, and geometry changes, are treated as disturbance and are rejected by the formation flight control system. The work in this thesis is a continuation of five previous theses, dealing with the design of formation flight control systems. The goal of the optimal formation flight control design is to achieve robust formation maintenance in the face of formation maneuvers …

Analysis And Modeling Of An Airport Departure Process, Joseph E. Hebert Mar 1995

Analysis And Modeling Of An Airport Departure Process, Joseph E. Hebert

Theses and Dissertations

This study analyzes departure delays at a major airport using probability models to represent this non-homogeneous process. The models developed in this study expand on the Markovian models presently used by employing the method of stages to represent some of the model processes. This technique improves the user's ability to achieve a close fit for the service time probability distribution while maintaining the advantages of the Markovian model. The three types of models developed and compared all assume a Markovian system entry process. The first model uses an exponential distribution to model the service process. The second uses an Erlang …

The Professional Air Traffic Controllers Strike: A Retrospective Analysis, Steven E. Durnin Oct 1994

The Professional Air Traffic Controllers Strike: A Retrospective Analysis, Steven E. Durnin

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to assess the opinions, beliefs, and perspectives of former air traffic controllers who were terminated from employment with the Federal Aviation Administration for participating in the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) strike of 1981. The study examines the perceptions of the former controllers to determine their feelings toward the justification for going on strike over 13 years ago. This is relevant in light of recent events including the lifting of the ban against rehiring PATCO controllers by the Clinton Administration.

The data collected for this study were obtained with an opinionnaire mailed via …

Comparison Of Air Traffic Control Candidate Ability With Simulator-Based Training Measures, Lawrence A. Tomaskovic Dec 1993

Comparison Of Air Traffic Control Candidate Ability With Simulator-Based Training Measures, Lawrence A. Tomaskovic

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to determine if the utilization of an experimental computer-based selection test battery would aid in the prediction of a candidate's performance when using an air traffic control computer-based simulation program. Each candidate completed the selection test battery, and then received air traffic control instruction using the air traffic control simulation program incorporated in the TRACON/Pro™ simulator system. The selection test battery results were correlated with the subsequent simulator scoring results.
