The Effect Of Pilot And Air Traffic Control Experiences & Automation Management Strategies On Uas Mission Task Performance, Christopher J. Reynolds Oct 2009

The Effect Of Pilot And Air Traffic Control Experiences & Automation Management Strategies On Uas Mission Task Performance, Christopher J. Reynolds

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Unmanned aircraft are relied on now more than ever to save lives and support the troops in the recent Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The demands for UAS capabilities are rapidly increasing in the civilian sector. However, UAS operations will not be carried out in the NAS until safety concerns are alleviated. Among these concerns is determining the appropriate level of automation in conjunction with a suitable pilot who exhibits the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to safely operate these systems.

This research examined two levels of automation: Management by Consent (MBC) and Management by Exception (MBE). User …

The Effects Of Foreign Accent And Language On Reaction Time And Accuracy In An Air Traffic Control Task, Rosabelle Suarez Jul 2007

The Effects Of Foreign Accent And Language On Reaction Time And Accuracy In An Air Traffic Control Task, Rosabelle Suarez

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The present study examines the effect of foreign accent interference with the ability to execute commands presented in speech format. The objective of this study was to demonstrate that a foreign accent influences performance. Participants were between 18 and 40 years of age. Half of the participants were native speakers of Spanish who began learning English as a second language via the classroom setting. The other half were native English-speaking with little or no exposure to the Spanish language. The experimental design was similar to an aviation scenario where participants listened to simulated ATC procedural commands and execute them on …

The Effects Of Gender And Regional Dialect On Performance In Aviation Communication, Erin E. Mccollum Oct 2004

The Effects Of Gender And Regional Dialect On Performance In Aviation Communication, Erin E. Mccollum

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to analyze the performance effects of gender and regional dialect on air traffic control statement recall. Sixty-one student volunteers participated in the experiment. Thirty-one participants held a pilot’s license and 30 participants had no flight experience. Each participant listened to one CD with 60 ATC statements each representing a male and female voice and New England, Southern, and General American dialect. Participants were asked to recall exactly what they heard. If the participant could not understand what they heard, they requested a repeat. The participant’s performance was recorded to CD and analyzed. Demographic questionnaires …

An Analysis Of Intention Formation As A Function Of Prospective Memory In Air Traffic Controllers, Jennifer Nagle Apr 2004

An Analysis Of Intention Formation As A Function Of Prospective Memory In Air Traffic Controllers, Jennifer Nagle

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Prospective memory, or memory for future intents, is an important part of everyone's daily life. Air traffic controllers whose jobs are based in an environment that taxes their memory resources for extended periods of time rely on this type of memory. Controllers objectives often change based on incoming information and the amount of traffic they are controlling. It is important to investigate how controllers form intentions for future events, what processes facilitate retrieval of this information, and establish what influence experience may have. This study proposes to assess controllers in an air traffic scenario by employing a cognitive task analysis …

The Professional Air Traffic Controllers Strike: A Retrospective Analysis, Steven E. Durnin Oct 1994

The Professional Air Traffic Controllers Strike: A Retrospective Analysis, Steven E. Durnin

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to assess the opinions, beliefs, and perspectives of former air traffic controllers who were terminated from employment with the Federal Aviation Administration for participating in the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) strike of 1981. The study examines the perceptions of the former controllers to determine their feelings toward the justification for going on strike over 13 years ago. This is relevant in light of recent events including the lifting of the ban against rehiring PATCO controllers by the Clinton Administration.

The data collected for this study were obtained with an opinionnaire mailed via …

Comparison Of Air Traffic Control Candidate Ability With Simulator-Based Training Measures, Lawrence A. Tomaskovic Dec 1993

Comparison Of Air Traffic Control Candidate Ability With Simulator-Based Training Measures, Lawrence A. Tomaskovic

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to determine if the utilization of an experimental computer-based selection test battery would aid in the prediction of a candidate's performance when using an air traffic control computer-based simulation program. Each candidate completed the selection test battery, and then received air traffic control instruction using the air traffic control simulation program incorporated in the TRACON/Pro™ simulator system. The selection test battery results were correlated with the subsequent simulator scoring results.

The Effect Of Active And Passive Control On Air Traffic Controller Dynamic Memory, Esa M. Rantanen Dec 1993

The Effect Of Active And Passive Control On Air Traffic Controller Dynamic Memory, Esa M. Rantanen

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of automated and passive control on air traffic controller dynamic memory. The study consisted of two experiments, each involving a realistic ATC scenario for radar approach control with a mix of arriving and departing traffic. In Experiment I, the subjects performed manual control of the traffic while, in Experiment II, the scenario was highly automated and the subjects were tasked with only monitoring the situation. The dynamic memory performance was measured by interrupting the scenario and having the subjects recall the traffic situation at the moment of simulation interruption. The …

Utilizing Instructional Design Constructs To Enhance Computer-Based Instruction In Air Traffic Controller Training, Theodore Scott Rhoads Dec 1992

Utilizing Instructional Design Constructs To Enhance Computer-Based Instruction In Air Traffic Controller Training, Theodore Scott Rhoads

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This study demonstrates that a computer-based instructional design format is appropriate for novice air traffic control (ATC) training. The computer presents the student with small amounts of information in tutorial and drill and practice sequences that necessitate student interactivity. The student is then periodically audit tested to ascertain mastery of the subject matter. The result of these mid-lesson evaluations serve as a self-check so that the student can assess his/her progress in the learning cycle. The systematic design of instruction and interactive approach to learning, enhances student motivation, improves learning and retention, while placing the responsibility of achieving specific learning …

Cognitive Learning Styles And Their Relation To Air Traffic Control Screening And Training, Vincent P. Galotti Jun 1991

Cognitive Learning Styles And Their Relation To Air Traffic Control Screening And Training, Vincent P. Galotti

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to show a relationship between the type of cognitive learning style that an individual possesses and their subsequent success at simulated air traffic control practical exercises. Kolb's Learning Style Inventory was utilized to determine dominant learning styles of 30 college students enrolled in a laboratory-based air traffic control course. The instrument was administered during the first day of classes in the Fall of 1990. Students were placed in one of four groups for statistical purposes according to learning style. The scores of simulated micro-computer based air traffic control practical exercises given at semester's end …
