Development Of Cpanel, An Unstructured Panel Code, Using A Modified Tls Velocity Formulation, Christopher R. Satterwhite
Development Of Cpanel, An Unstructured Panel Code, Using A Modified Tls Velocity Formulation, Christopher R. Satterwhite
Master's Theses
The use of panel codes in the aerospace industry dates back many decades. Recent advances in computer capability have allowed them to evolve, both in speed and complexity, to provide very quick solutions to complex flow fields. By only requiring surface discretization, panel codes offer a faster alternative to volume based methods, delivering a solution in minutes, as opposed to hours or days. Despite their utility, the availability of these codes is very limited due to either cost, or rights restrictions.
This work incorporates modern software development practices, such as unit level testing and version control, into the development of …
Application Of Wray-Agarwal Model To Turbulent Flow In A 2d Lid-Driven Cavity And A 3d Lid-Driven Box, Hakop J. Nagapetyan
Application Of Wray-Agarwal Model To Turbulent Flow In A 2d Lid-Driven Cavity And A 3d Lid-Driven Box, Hakop J. Nagapetyan
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, various turbulence models are used for simulating internal vortical flow, both turbulent and laminar, with large recirculation by considering the flow in a 2-D lid-driven square cavity and a 3-D lid driven cubic box. The accuracy of the newly developed Wray-Agarwal (WA) one equation turbulence model is compared against two well-known industry standard turbulence models; the Spalart-Allmaras (SA) and the Shear-Stress-Transport (SST) k-ω models. The simulations are performed by numerically solving the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations in conjunction with WA, SA and SST k-ω models and comparing the results with the available experimental data and Large Eddy …
Similarity Analysis Of A Swirling Counter-Flow, Jitesh Rane
Similarity Analysis Of A Swirling Counter-Flow, Jitesh Rane
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Swirling counter-flows are used in numerous engineering applications, like combustion, heat exchangers, cyclonic separation and mixing, etc. These swirling counter-flows produce complex flow fields. It is important to study these types of flows in order to use them properly in many applications.
The present work provides insight into the flowfield inside a swirling counter-flow when the fluid is injected tangentially in a cylindrical container. A semi-analytical solution is developed by starting with the full Navier-Stokes equation and using a similarity analysis. A decaying swirl along the axis of the cylinder is assumed, which reduces the Navier-Stokes equations to first order …

High Temperature Flow Solver For Aerothermodynamics Problems, Huaibao Zhang
High Temperature Flow Solver For Aerothermodynamics Problems, Huaibao Zhang
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
A weakly ionized hypersonic flow solver for the simulation of reentry flow is firstly developed at the University of Kentucky. This code is the fluid dynamics module of known as Kentucky Aerothermodynamics and Thermal Response System (KATS). The solver uses a second-order finite volume approach to solve the laminar Navier– Stokes equations, species mass conservation and energy balance equations for flow in chemical and thermal non-equilibrium state, and a fully implicit first-order backward Euler method for the time integration. The hypersonic flow solver is then extended to account for very low Mach number flow using the preconditioning and switch of …

A Cfd Investigation Of The Hydrodynamic Characteristics Of Fluid Flow Through An Impeller And Multi-Objective Design Optimization Of A Centrifugal Pump, Mohammed Khammat Sagban
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
In this thesis, the first part is conducting an investigation of the hydrodynamic characteristics (pressure and velocity) of fluid flow (water) through an impeller of a centrifugal pump. To illustrate a one-dimensional model is used to identify an impeller of a GDM 10 x 12 HD centrifugal pump using Vista CPD design and BladeGen tool. A three-dimensional model is then built with a commercial software package ANSYS Blade Modeler. The structured mesh of the impeller blade is obtained by using TurboGrid system. The volute of the centrifugal pump is built in ANSYS geometry, and an unstructured mesh is accomplished by …
Flight And Stability Of A Laser Inertial Fusion Energy Target In The Drift Region Between Injection And The Reaction Chamber With Computational Fluid Dynamics, Tiffany Leilani Mitori
Flight And Stability Of A Laser Inertial Fusion Energy Target In The Drift Region Between Injection And The Reaction Chamber With Computational Fluid Dynamics, Tiffany Leilani Mitori
Master's Theses
A Laser Inertial Fusion Energy (LIFE) target’s flight through a low Reynolds number and high Mach number regime was analyzed with computational fluid dynamics software. This regime consisted of xenon gas at 1,050 K and approximately 6,670 Pa. Simulations with similar flow conditions were performed over a sphere and compared with experimental data and published correlations for validation purposes. Transient considerations of the developing flow around the target were explored. Simulations of the target at different velocities were used to determine correlations for the drag coefficient and Nusselt number as functions of the Reynolds number. Simulations with different target angles …
Computational And Experimental Comparison Of A Powered Lift, Upper Surface Blowing Configuration, Jay M. Marcos
Computational And Experimental Comparison Of A Powered Lift, Upper Surface Blowing Configuration, Jay M. Marcos
Master's Theses
In the past, 2D CFD analysis of Circulation Control technology have shown poor comparison with experimental results. In Circulation Control experiments, typical results show a relationship between lift coefficient, CL, vs blowing momentum coefficient, Cμ. CFD analysis tend to over-predict values of CL due to gridding issues and/or turbulence model selection. This thesis attempted to address both issues by performing Richardson’s Extrpolation method to determine an acceptable mesh size and by using FLUENT’s 2-equation turbulence models. The experimental results and CAD geometry were obtained from Georgia Tech Research Institute for comparison with the CFD analysis.
The study showed that 3D …
Development Of Cfd Models For The Purposes Of Exploring Free Surface Wave Phenomena, Leonard P. Stoehr
Development Of Cfd Models For The Purposes Of Exploring Free Surface Wave Phenomena, Leonard P. Stoehr
Masters Theses
With the push for finding alternative, green energy sources, the harnessing of energy from ocean and lake waves is becoming a more researched field. To fully understand the behavior of wave interactions and optimize designs to extract this energy, it is necessary to develop computer models that can accurately replicate this behavior. A case is presented in which previous work done using the wave tank found in the Western Michigan University fluids lab is examined. The case involves harnessing the energy generated by ocean waves through the usage of plates of different shapes resting horizontally on the water’s surface. The …

With the pursuit of more advanced and environmentally-friendly technologies of today’s society, the airline industry has been pushed further to investigate solutions that will reduce airport noise and congestion, cut down on emissions, and improve the overall performance of aircraft. These items directly influence airport size (runway length), flight patterns in the community surrounding the airport, cruise speed, and many other aircraft design considerations which are setting the requirements for next generation aircraft. Leading the research in this movement is NASA, which has set specific goals for the next generation regional airliners and has categorized the designs that meet the …
Computational Analysis Of A Wing Oscillator, Ryne Derrick Radermacher
Computational Analysis Of A Wing Oscillator, Ryne Derrick Radermacher
Masters Theses
An analysis of a newly proposed wind power extraction device called a wing oscillator was performed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A wing oscillator is a device that consists of two airfoils attached to a central pivot by means of a frame or shaft. Oscillatory motion is produced by controlling the angle of attack of the airfoils as a fluid flow is passed over the device. A robust mathematical scheme was developed to investigate the performance of the wing oscillator and was hooked to the CFD software package FLUENT through User Defined Functions (UDFs). Using the dynamic meshing analysis methods …

Re-entry vehicles designed for space exploration are usually equipped with thermal protection systems made of ablative material. In order to properly model and predict the aerothermal environment of the vehicle, it is imperative to account for the gases produced by ablation processes. In the case of charring ablators, where an inner resin is pyrolyzed at a relatively low temperature, the composition of the gas expelled into the boundary layer is complex and may lead to thermal chemical reactions that cannot be captured with simple ow chemistry models. In order to obtain better predictions, an appropriate gas ow chemistry model needs …

Solar Turbines Gas Compressor Engineering Division of San Diego, California called upon the Mechanical Engineering students of California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo to provide recommendations for optimization of compressor end cap port design. Various sizes of compressors have end caps with numerous ports that exchange fluids between the inside and outside of the working fluid pressure vessel. Because so many ports must exist on the end caps, unusual flow paths are created to supply the appropriate location within the compressor. These flow paths commonly consist of a drilled inlet hole which intersects with a sudden expansion. The sudden expansion …
Assessing The V2-F Turbulence Models For Circulation Control Applications, Travis M. Storm
Assessing The V2-F Turbulence Models For Circulation Control Applications, Travis M. Storm
Master's Theses
In recent years, airports have experienced increasing airport congestion, partially due to the hub-and-spoke model on which airline operations are based. Current airline operations utilize large airports, focusing traffic to a small number of airports. One way to relieve such congestion is to transition to a more accessible and efficient point-to-point operation, which utilizes a large web of smaller airports. This expansion to regional airports propagates the need for next-generation low-noise aircraft with short take-off and landing capabilities. NASA has attacked this problem with a high-lift, low-noise concept dubbed the Cruise Efficient Short Take-Off and Landing (CESTOL) aircraft. The goal …
High Order Finite Elements For Lagrangian Computational Fluid Dynamics, Truman Everett Ellis
High Order Finite Elements For Lagrangian Computational Fluid Dynamics, Truman Everett Ellis
Master's Theses
A general finite element method is presented to solve the Euler equations in a Lagrangian reference frame. This FEM framework allows for separate arbitrarily high order representation of kinematic and thermodynamic variables. An accompanying hydrodynamics code written in Matlab is presented as a test-bed to experiment with various basis function choices. A wide range of basis function pairs are postulated and a few choices are developed further, including the bi-quadratic Q2-Q1d and Q2-Q2d elements. These are compared with a corresponding pair of low order bi-linear elements, traditional Q1-Q0 and sub-zonal pressure Q1-Q1d. Several test problems are considered including static convergence …

Cfd As Applied To The Design Of Short Takeoff And Landing Vehicles Using Circulation Control, Tyler M. Ball
Master's Theses
The ability to predict the distance required for an aircraft to takeoff is an essential component of aircraft design. It involves aspects related to each of the major aircraft systems: aerodynamics, propulsion, configuration, structures, and stability and control. For an aircraft designed for short takeoffs and landings (STOL), designing the aircraft to provide a short takeoff distance, or more precisely the balanced field length (BFL), often leads to the use of a powered lift technique such as circulation control (CC). Although CC has been around for many years, it has never been used on a production aircraft. This is in …
