Rayleigh Test Apparatus Design Report, Josef Duller, Owen Raybould, James Nicovich Jun 2011

Rayleigh Test Apparatus Design Report, Josef Duller, Owen Raybould, James Nicovich

Mechanical Engineering

The Rayleigh Test Apparatus is a device that will be used to test the thermodynamic properties of Nitrous Oxide to assess the feasibility of using this fluid as a coolant for a hybrid rocket aero spike. The aero spike is intended to redirect the propulsion flow as it leaves the engine to create a more efficient flow pattern at low and high altitudes. However, there are issues of overheating which leads to melting of the aero spike. For this reason, the use of nitrous oxide (N2O) as a coolant is being explored. N20 is being considered because it is already …

Aerospace Engineering

A design is developed for a Natural Laminar Flow (NLF) wing, to be used at California Polytechnic State University for acoustic turbulence testing. Composite materials are used to produce high-quality surface finishes necessary for laminar flow. A design for the test apparatus is presented and justified. A manufacturing procedure is proposed for the carbon fiber skin, using Vacuum Resin Infusion (VRI). This procedure is tested on a scaled part with satisfactory results; lessons learned are discovered and integrated into the final manufacturing process. The test section has been fit to the Cal Poly wind tunnel, but full implementation has not …

Port Flow Test System, Daniel Chairez, Chelsea E. Crawford, Daniel S. Welch Jun 2011

Port Flow Test System, Daniel Chairez, Chelsea E. Crawford, Daniel S. Welch

Mechanical Engineering

Solar Turbines Gas Compressor Engineering Division of San Diego, California called upon the Mechanical Engineering students of California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo to provide recommendations for optimization of compressor end cap port design. Various sizes of compressors have end caps with numerous ports that exchange fluids between the inside and outside of the working fluid pressure vessel. Because so many ports must exist on the end caps, unusual flow paths are created to supply the appropriate location within the compressor. These flow paths commonly consist of a drilled inlet hole which intersects with a sudden expansion. The sudden expansion …

Designing The Human-Powered Helicopter: A New Perspective, Gregory Hamilton Gradwell Jun 2011

Designing The Human-Powered Helicopter: A New Perspective, Gregory Hamilton Gradwell

Master's Theses

The concept of human-powered vertical flight was studied in great depth. Through the manipulation of preexisting theory and analytical methods, a collection of design tools was created to expediently conceptualize and then analyze virtually any rotor. The tools were then arranged as part of a complete helicopter rotor design process. The lessons learned as a result of studying this process—and the tools of which it consists—are presented in the following discussion. It is the belief of the author that by utilizing these tools, as well as the suggestions that accompany them, future engineers may someday build a human-powered helicopter capable …

A Computational Study Of Engine Deflection Using A Circulation Control Wing, Bryan Holly Blessing May 2011

A Computational Study Of Engine Deflection Using A Circulation Control Wing, Bryan Holly Blessing

Master's Theses

In the past, research into Short Takeoff and Landing aircraft has led to the investigation of the coupling of a Circulation Control Wing and Upper Surface Blowing engine. The Circulation Control Wing entrains the flow of the engine to be deflected downward such that a component of the thrust is now in the vertical direction. The unfortunate consequence of the Upper Surface Blowing engine is the poor cruise performance due to scrub drag. Cal Poly's research into a Cruise Efficient Short Takeoff and Landing Aircraft offers a solution by pylon mounting over the wing engines. Analysis shows that the engine …

High-Frame-Rate Oil Film Interferometry, Jonathan Charles White

Master's Theses

High-Frame-Rate Oil Film Interferometry

Jonathan Charles White

This thesis presents the design and implementation of a high-frame-rate oil film interferometry technique (HOFI) used to directly measure skin friction in time dependent flows. Experiments were performed to determine the ability of a high-speed camera to capture oil film interferometry images. HOFI was found to be able to capture these interferometry images at frequencies up to 105 Hz. Steady laminar and turbulent flows were tested. Transient flows tested consisted of a wind tunnel ramping up in velocity and a laminar boundary layer which was intermittently tripped to turbulence by puffing air …

Conical Probe Calibration And Wind Tunnel Data Analysis Of The Channeled Centerbody Inlet Experiment, Samson Siu Truong Apr 2011

Conical Probe Calibration And Wind Tunnel Data Analysis Of The Channeled Centerbody Inlet Experiment, Samson Siu Truong

Aerospace Engineering

For a multi-hole test probe undergoing wind tunnel tests, the resulting data needs to be analyzed for any significant trends.  These trends include relating the pressure distributions, the geometric orientation, and the local velocity vector to one another.  However, experimental runs always involve some sort of error.  As a result, a calibration procedure is required to compensate for this error.  For this case, it is the misalignment bias angles resulting from the distortion associated with the angularity of the test probe or the local velocity vector.  Through a series of calibration steps presented here, the angular biases are determined and …

Scale Modeling Of Cessna 172, Chee-Woon Kim Mar 2011

Scale Modeling Of Cessna 172, Chee-Woon Kim

Aerospace Engineering

This report describes how the scale-model aircraft can be built when the Reynolds number is out of range for using dynamic similitude method. Due to lack of time and budget for designing an actual model for testing, Cessna 172 was used to calculate the size of the temporary scale-model aircraft. The method that was used for this project was matching aerodynamic coefficients such as drag coefficient or lift coefficient of the prototype and the model. Based on this method, the takeoff distance, landing distance and the rate of climb of the model came out to be 218 ft, 91 ft …

An Investigative Study Of Gurney Flaps On A Naca 0036 Airfoil, Gregory F. Altmann Mar 2011

An Investigative Study Of Gurney Flaps On A Naca 0036 Airfoil, Gregory F. Altmann

Master's Theses

This project examined the effect of Gurney flaps on a 2D, 2-ft chord NACA 0036 airfoil in the Cal Poly 3’x4’ low speed wind tunnel at 25 m/s.  It also covered the numerical simulation of the experiment in computational fluid dynamics (CFD).  During the study, problems with the wind tunnel data were seen.  After a careful diagnosis, the problem was traced to dirty flow conditioners which were subsequently replaced.

Five Gurney flaps at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5% of the chord were tested.  The Gurney flaps had the effect of eliminating the lift reversal effect and lowering the profile …

Two Element Linear Strength Vortex Panel Method, Clifton A. Cox Mar 2011

Two Element Linear Strength Vortex Panel Method, Clifton A. Cox

Aerospace Engineering

A linear strength vortex panel method was developed to predict the Cp and Cl for a lifting two element airfoil. The linear strength vortex panel method was first validated against thin airfoil theory and experimental data for a single NACA 2412 airfoil. At 2 degrees angle of attack, the linear strength vortex panel method predicted a Cl of about 0.49. Experimental data and thin airfoil theory gave Cl estimations of 0.45 and 0.22 respectively. The Matlab code was then modified to accept a two element airfoil. The two key modifications were the separation of the two …

Implementation Of A Conrad Probe On A Boundary Layer Measurement System, Charles Rocky Ulk Aug 2010

Implementation Of A Conrad Probe On A Boundary Layer Measurement System, Charles Rocky Ulk

Master's Theses

This thesis presents the design, calibration, and performance evaluation of a type of two-hole pressure probe anemometer known as a Conrad probe, as well as its subsequent implementation on an autonomous, compact boundary layer measurement device and its first application for subsonic in-flight measurements of a swept wing boundary layer. Calibration of the Conrad probe was accomplished using two calibration functions and a non-nulling method for resolving in-plane flow velocity direction and magnitude over a range of ±30 degrees. This approach to calibration and application offered the advantages of rapid data acquisition with lower energy consumption than alternative methods for …

Analysis Of A Passive Flow Control Device Via Flow Visualization Techniques, Cheryl R. Graham, Shi (Peter) Huang

Aerospace Engineering

This report details an experiment done to verify the effectiveness of a passive flow control system on a two-dimensional bluff body, blunt trailing edge model in controlling wake dimension and Karman vortex sheds. An earlier experiment by Park, et.al.[1] performed analysis via wind tunnel pressure testing and computerized model to determine the ideal proportions of such a tab design and identify the flow properties responsible for the potential drag reduction. To obtain visual verification of the existence of these concepts, a bluff body model proportionally identical to the one used by Park, et.al., was designed and tested in a water …

Alterations Of The Cal Poly Supersonic Wind Tunnel To Increase Accuracy And Prove The Absence Of Shockwaves, Garrett A. Lovell, Hector A. Gonzalez Jun 2010

Alterations Of The Cal Poly Supersonic Wind Tunnel To Increase Accuracy And Prove The Absence Of Shockwaves, Garrett A. Lovell, Hector A. Gonzalez

Aerospace Engineering

The calibration and improvement of the Cal Poly supersonic wind tunnel was performed in order to create a fully functional facility for supersonic testing. While investigating possible shocks present in the wind tunnel, it was discovered that the real concern was not the tunnel but the measurement systems. Both measurement systems, pitot tube and Schlieren, were evaluated and were found to be deficient. The pitot system had so much play in it that it bent backward every time the tunnel was run invalidating the results, and giving false shock data. The Schlieren system was missing one vital component to make …

Analysis Of Curvature Effects On Boundary Layer Separation And Turbulence Model Accuracy For Circulation Control Applications, Daniel Wilde Jun 2010

Analysis Of Curvature Effects On Boundary Layer Separation And Turbulence Model Accuracy For Circulation Control Applications, Daniel Wilde

Aerospace Engineering

This set of analyses involves flow separation in high curvature regions with special attention to circulation control implementations. Blown flaps of various shapes designed by Rory Golden for use on the AMELIA, or Advanced Model for Extreme Lift and Improved Aeroacoustics, short takeoff vehicle have exhibited flow separation at locations where flap curvature changes. Investigating this problem, its causes, and potential solutions, I have concluded that the separation is equally a function of the flow simulation turbulence model used, and the geometry of the flap itself. Using Gambit version 11.0.1 for grid generation and Fluent version 6.3.26 for CFD calculations, …

Conceptual Aircraft Hinge Moment Measurement System, Erin M. Hambrick, Nicole M. Thomason Jun 2010

Conceptual Aircraft Hinge Moment Measurement System, Erin M. Hambrick, Nicole M. Thomason

Aerospace Engineering

The Conceptual Aircraft Hinge Moment Measurement System (CAHMMS) was designed, prototyped, and validated to improve hinge moment estimates early in the design process. Validation was performed by integrating CAHMMS with a test wing and conducting wind tunnel tests to compare the expected theoretical, historical, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) predictions to the experimental results. As CAHMMS is an external measurement system, interference effects at the connection points were investigated. Further studies were undertaken to verify the CFD predictions with the experimental hinge moment measurements. Hinge moment results from the experimental data and the theoretical data closely correlated with less than …

Blended Wing Body Form Factor Code And Model Center Integration, Simone (Simo) Alberti Jun 2010

Blended Wing Body Form Factor Code And Model Center Integration, Simone (Simo) Alberti

Aerospace Engineering

This senior project investigated a method of calculating the form factor of an arbitrarily shaped wing, such as a blended wing body, from its pressure coefficient distribution. A Matlab script was coded and integrated into an existing Model Center tool for blended wing bodies. Model Center allows a VSP model to be analyzed with PMARC, a panel code, to determine the pressure distribution over a wing. The Matlab code can then calculate the form factor and critical Mach number. It was found that the code can accurately model simple planar wings, validated against empirical equations, and is robust for blended …

Development Of A Meshless Method To Solve Compressible Potential Flows, Alejandro Ramos Jun 2010

Development Of A Meshless Method To Solve Compressible Potential Flows, Alejandro Ramos

Master's Theses

The utility of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for solving problems of engineering interest has experienced rapid growth due to the improvements in both memory capacity and processing speed of computers. While the capability now exists for the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations about complex and complete aircraft configurations, the bottleneck within the process is the time consuming task of properly generating a mesh that can accurately solve the governing partial differential equations (PDEs). This thesis explored two numerical techniques that attempt to circumvent the difficulty associated with the meshing process by solving a simplified form of the continuity equation within …

A Three Dimensional Vortex Particle-Panel Code For Modeling Propeller-Airframe Interaction, Jacob S. Calabretta Jun 2010

A Three Dimensional Vortex Particle-Panel Code For Modeling Propeller-Airframe Interaction, Jacob S. Calabretta

Master's Theses

Analysis of the aerodynamic effects of a propeller flowfield on bodies downstream of the propeller is a complex task. These interaction effects can have serious repercussions for many aspects of the vehicle, including drag changes resulting in larger power requirements, stability changes resulting in adjustments to stabilizer sizing, and lift changes requiring wing planform adjustments.

Historically it has been difficult to accurately account for these effects at any stage during the design process. More recently methods using Euler solvers have been developed that capture interference effects well, although they don't provide an ideal tool for early stages of aircraft design, …

Numerical Examination Of Flow Field Characteristics And Fabri Choking Of 2d Supersonic Ejectors, Brett G. Morham Jun 2010

Numerical Examination Of Flow Field Characteristics And Fabri Choking Of 2d Supersonic Ejectors, Brett G. Morham

Master's Theses

An automated computer simulation of the two-dimensional planar Cal Poly Supersonic Ejector test rig is developed. The purpose of the simulation is to identify the operating conditions which produce the saturated, Fabri choke and Fabri block aerodynamic flow patterns. The effect of primary to secondary stagnation pressure ratio on the efficiency of the ejector operation is measured using the entrainment ratio which is the secondary to primary mass flow ratio.

The primary flow of the ejector is supersonic and the secondary (entrained) stream enters the ejector at various velocities at or below Mach 1. The primary and secondary streams are …

Novel Inverse Airfoil Design Utilizing Parametric Equations, Kevin A. Lane Jun 2010

Novel Inverse Airfoil Design Utilizing Parametric Equations, Kevin A. Lane

Master's Theses

The engineering problem of airfoil design has been of great theoretical interest for almost a century and has led to hundreds of papers written and dozens of methods developed over the years. This interest stems from the practical implications of airfoil design. Airfoil selection significantly influences the application's aerodynamic performance. Tailoring an airfoil profile to its specific application can have great performance advantages. This includes considerations of the lift and drag characteristics, pitching moment, volume for fuel and structure, maximum lift coefficient, stall characteristics, as well as off-design performance.

A common way to think about airfoil design is optimization, the …

Assessing The V2-F Turbulence Models For Circulation Control Applications, Travis M. Storm Apr 2010

Assessing The V2-F Turbulence Models For Circulation Control Applications, Travis M. Storm

Master's Theses

In recent years, airports have experienced increasing airport congestion, partially due to the hub-and-spoke model on which airline operations are based. Current airline operations utilize large airports, focusing traffic to a small number of airports. One way to relieve such congestion is to transition to a more accessible and efficient point-to-point operation, which utilizes a large web of smaller airports. This expansion to regional airports propagates the need for next-generation low-noise aircraft with short take-off and landing capabilities. NASA has attacked this problem with a high-lift, low-noise concept dubbed the Cruise Efficient Short Take-Off and Landing (CESTOL) aircraft. The goal …

High Order Finite Elements For Lagrangian Computational Fluid Dynamics, Truman Everett Ellis Apr 2010

High Order Finite Elements For Lagrangian Computational Fluid Dynamics, Truman Everett Ellis

Master's Theses

A general finite element method is presented to solve the Euler equations in a Lagrangian reference frame. This FEM framework allows for separate arbitrarily high order representation of kinematic and thermodynamic variables. An accompanying hydrodynamics code written in Matlab is presented as a test-bed to experiment with various basis function choices. A wide range of basis function pairs are postulated and a few choices are developed further, including the bi-quadratic Q2-Q1d and Q2-Q2d elements. These are compared with a corresponding pair of low order bi-linear elements, traditional Q1-Q0 and sub-zonal pressure Q1-Q1d. Several test problems are considered including static convergence …

Aerodynamic Performance Enhancement Of A Naca 66–206 Airfoil Using Supersonic Channel Airfoil Design, David Michael Giles Nov 2009

Aerodynamic Performance Enhancement Of A Naca 66–206 Airfoil Using Supersonic Channel Airfoil Design, David Michael Giles

Master's Theses

Supersonic channel airfoil design techniques have been shown to significantly reduce drag in high-speed flows over diamond shaped airfoils by Ruffin and colleagues. The effect of applying these techniques to a NACA 66-206 airfoil is presented. The design domain entails channel heights of 8-16.6% thickness-to-chord and speeds from Mach 1.5-3.0. Numerical simulations show an increase in the lift-to-drag ratio for airfoils at Mach 2.5 at a 35,000-ft altitude with a 12% channel height geometry showing a benefit of 17.2% at 6-deg angle of attack and a sharp channel leading edge. Wave drag is significantly reduced while viscous forces are slightly …

Rayleigh Flow Of Two-Phase Nitrous Oxide As A Hybrid Rocket Nozzle Coolant, Lauren May Nelson Sep 2009

Rayleigh Flow Of Two-Phase Nitrous Oxide As A Hybrid Rocket Nozzle Coolant, Lauren May Nelson

Master's Theses

The Mechanical Engineering Department at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo currently maintains a lab-scale hybrid rocket motor for which nitrous oxide is utilized as the oxidizer in the combustion system. Because of its availability, the same two-phase (gas and liquid) nitrous oxide that is used in the combustion system is also routed around the throat of the hybrid rocket’s converging-diverging nozzle as a coolant. While this coolant system has proven effective empirically in previous tests, the physics behind the flow of the two-phase mixture is largely unexplained. This thesis provides a method for predicting some of its …

The Interaction Between Throttling And Thrust Vectoring Of An Annular Aerospike Nozzle, David Michael Imbaratto

Master's Theses

Applied research and testing has been conducted at the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo High-pressure Blow-Down facility to study the affects of throttling in a thrust-vectored aerospike nozzle. This study supports the ongoing research at Cal Poly to effectively thrust vector a hybrid rocket motor. Such thrust vectoring is achieved by small secondary ports in the nozzle body that are perpendicular to the main nozzle. The testing conducted included characterizing and comparing the performance of a straight aerospike nozzle to that of a thrust-vectored aerospike nozzle. Throttling effects on the aerospike nozzle in an unvectored and in a vectored configuration …
