Transfers To A Gravitational Saddle Point: An Extended Mission Design Option For Lisa Pathfinder, Andrew D. Cox
Transfers To A Gravitational Saddle Point: An Extended Mission Design Option For Lisa Pathfinder, Andrew D. Cox
Open Access Theses
Any possible LISA Pathfinder extended mission will immediately follow the primary mission after completion of scientific observations and technical demonstrations in a Sun-Earth L1 libration point orbit. One extended mission concept with scientific appeal is a spacecraft path that includes multiple encounters with a gravitational equilibrium point. This point, also termed a saddle point, exists where the total gravitational acceleration sums to zero and is distinct from the five Lagrange points in the three-body problem. This investigation seeks a strategy to design such a path subject to a variety of constraints. Periodic, quasi-periodic, and manifold structures are explored to …
Phase Of Flight Identification In General Aviation Operations, Valentine Pascale Goblet
Phase Of Flight Identification In General Aviation Operations, Valentine Pascale Goblet
Open Access Theses
Identifying phases of flight in General Aviation can help in identifying safety events, which are events which may result in the aircraft being in a hazardous state. Unlike commercial operations that have well-defined phases of flight such as taxi, takeoff, climb, cruise, descent, approach, and landing, GA missions have more hard-to-identify phases of flight. For example, pilot training missions can involve multiple “touch-and-go” maneuvers, which make it difficult to define a distinct cruise phase during the patterns. Here, we present an algorithm to automatically identifying phases of flight in GA. The method includes an algorithm to tailor the phase of …
Dynamic Sensor Tasking And Imm Ekf Estimation For Tracking Impulsively Maneuvering Satellites, Arthur A. Lace
Dynamic Sensor Tasking And Imm Ekf Estimation For Tracking Impulsively Maneuvering Satellites, Arthur A. Lace
Open Access Theses
In order to efficiently maintain space situational awareness, care must be taken to optimally allocate expensive observation resources. In most situations the available sensors capable of tracking spacecraft have their time split between many different monitoring responsibilities. Tracking maneuvering spacecraft can be especially difficult as the schedule of maneuvers may not be known and will often throw off previous orbital models. Effectively solving this tasking problem is an ongoing focus of research in the area of space situational awareness. Most methods of automated tasking do not make use of interacting multiple model extended Kalman filter techniques to better track satellites …

An Experimental Comparison Of Diffuser Designs In A Centrifugal Compressor, Cam-Tu Jeanne Methel
Open Access Theses
The objective of this investigation was to compare the effects of two different diffuser vane geometries on the performance of a centrifugal compressor. Vaned diffusers are commonly used in aeroengines because they can achieve higher pressure recoveries than vaneless diffusers of similar size. Improving the diffuser’s pressure recovery and effectiveness can result in overall compressor performance benefits that are sought out by engine manufacturers looking to improve overall engine efficiency. An airfoil vane was tested and compared to a baseline wedge diffuser in the Purdue CSTAR research facility, where the centrifugal compressor used for this study is intended to be …
Unsupervised Learning Framework For Large-Scale Flight Data Analysis Of Cockpit Human Machine Interaction Issues, Abhishek B. Vaidya
Unsupervised Learning Framework For Large-Scale Flight Data Analysis Of Cockpit Human Machine Interaction Issues, Abhishek B. Vaidya
Open Access Theses
As the level of automation within an aircraft increases, the interactions between the pilot and autopilot play a crucial role in its proper operation. Issues with human machine interactions (HMI) have been cited as one of the main causes behind many aviation accidents. Due to the complexity of such interactions, it is challenging to identify all possible situations and develop the necessary contingencies. In this thesis, we propose a data-driven analysis tool to identify potential HMI issues in large-scale Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) dataset. The proposed tool is developed using a multi-level clustering framework, where a set of basic …
Tadpole Orbits In The L4/L5 Region: Construction And Links To Other Families Of Periodic Orbits, Alexandre G. Van Anderlecht
Tadpole Orbits In The L4/L5 Region: Construction And Links To Other Families Of Periodic Orbits, Alexandre G. Van Anderlecht
Open Access Theses
The equations of motion in the Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem (CR3BP) allow five equilibrium solutions, that is, the Lagrange or libration points. Two of the five equilibrium solutions are the triangular or equilateral libration points, L4 and L 5. As the secondary gravitational body moves in its orbit about the larger mass, L4 and L5 lead and trail the secondary by 60 degrees, respectively. This investigation focuses on periodic solutions in the vicinity of the triangular libration points, specifically horseshoe and tadpole orbits. Horseshoe orbits are symmetric periodic solutions in the plane of primary motion encompassing both …

A Transfer Network Linking Earth, Moon, And The Triangular Libration Point Regions In The Earth-Moon System, Lucia R. Capdevila
Open Access Dissertations
In the near future, several space applications in the Earth-Moon system may require a spacecraft to hold a stable motion, but the transfer trajectory infrastructure to access such stable motions has not been fully investigated yet. The triangular libration points, L 4and L5, in the Earth-Moon system have long been thought of as ideal locations for a communications satellite. Recently, Distant Retrograde Orbits (DROs) and Near-Rectilinear Halo Orbits (NRHOs) near the Moon have been identified as motion of interest for manned and unmanned missions with a focus on operations in cislunar space. The triangular libration points, as well as …
Coupled Orbit-Attitude Mission Design In The Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem, Davide Guzzetti
Coupled Orbit-Attitude Mission Design In The Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem, Davide Guzzetti
Open Access Dissertations
Trajectory design increasingly leverages multi-body dynamical structures that are based on an understanding of various types of orbits in the Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem (CR3BP). Given the more complex dynamical environment, mission applications may also benefit from deeper insight into the attitude motion. In this investigation, the attitude dynamics are coupled with the trajectories in the CR3BP. In a highly sensitive dynamical model, such as the orbit-attitude CR3BP, periodic solutions allow delineation of the fundamental dynamical structures. Periodic solutions are also a subset of motions that are bounded over an infinite time-span (assuming no perturbing factors), without the necessity to …

A Study On Flow Development In An Apu-Style Inlet And Its Effect On Centrifugal Compressor Performance, Fangyuan Lou
Open Access Dissertations
The objectives of this research were to investigate the flow development inside an APU-style inlet and its effect on centrifugal compressor performance. The motivation arises from the increased applications of gas turbine engines installed with APU-style inlets such as unmanned aerial vehicles, auxiliary power units, and helicopters. The inlet swirl distortion created from these complicated inlet systems has become a major performance and operability concern. To improve the integration between the APU-style inlet and gas turbine engines, better understanding of the flow field in the APU-style inlet and its effect on gas turbine is necessary.

Dynamic Transverse Debondong Of A Single S-2 Fiber, Stephen E. Levine
Dynamic Transverse Debondong Of A Single S-2 Fiber, Stephen E. Levine
Open Access Theses
Fiber reinforced composites are becoming increasingly common due to their high strength to weight ratios as compared to more conventional materials. Along with this increased used comes the need to have a higher level of understanding of the material characteristics. Specifically, the interface between the fiber and matrix is of particular interest. Loss of adhesion at this interface, known as debonding, can greatly decrease material strength. There has been significant research into debdonding phenomena at low strain rates. However, there is still a need for further insight at higher strain rates. In addition, given the opacity of many epoxy resins, …

The Aerodynamic And Dynamic Loading Of A Slender Structure By An Impacting Tornado-Like Vortex: The Influence Of Relative Vortex-To-Structure Size On Structural Loading, Matthew Nicholas Strasser
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Structural loading produced by an impacting vortex is a hazardous phenomenon that is encountered in numerous applications ranging from the destruction of residences by tornados to the chopping of tip vortices by rotors. Adequate design of structures to resist vortex-induced structural loading necessitates study of the phenomenon that control the structural loading produced by an impacting vortex. This body of work extends the current knowledge base of vortex-structure interaction by evaluating the influence of the relative vortex-to-structure size on the structural loading that the vortex produces. A computer model is utilized to directly simulate the two-dimensional impact of an impinging …
Design Of Elastic Metamaterials, Yu-Chi Su
Design Of Elastic Metamaterials, Yu-Chi Su
Open Access Dissertations
This study focused on the design and fabrication of a double negativity and three broadband single negativity elastic metamaterials using a 3D printer. We investigated dispersion curves and dynamic material properties of the metamaterials. Negative phase velocity in the double negativity metamaterial was also demonstrated.
For metamaterials with single negativity, three types of broadband metamaterials were designed from parametric studies. A comparison showed that using frame bending/stretching mode is more effective than applying beam bending mode to broaden bandgap. Furthermore, it is found that adding internal resonant components could enlarge the bandgap. The single negativity metamaterials were validated by numerical …
Studies Of Systems With Nonholonomic Constraints: The Segway And The Chaplygin Sleigh, Joseph Troy Lee Tuttle
Studies Of Systems With Nonholonomic Constraints: The Segway And The Chaplygin Sleigh, Joseph Troy Lee Tuttle
Open Access Theses
In this thesis, two systems with nonholonomic systems are investigated: the Segway and the Chaplygin sleigh. Using Lagrangian mechanics, the constrained nonlinear equations of motion for both systems are derived. By use of the nullspace of the constraint matrices, the unconstrained equations of motion can be obtained. For the Segway, these equations are linearized about a zero equilibrium state, placed into state space form and decoupled. A feedback controller is designed about the velocity and heading angle rate reference commands. To compare to the real data from the built Segway, measurement noise was also included in the model. Experimental data …
A Computational Analysis Of The Aerodynamic And Aeromechanical Behavior Of The Purdue Multistage Compressor, David Monk
A Computational Analysis Of The Aerodynamic And Aeromechanical Behavior Of The Purdue Multistage Compressor, David Monk
Open Access Theses
Compressor design programs are becoming more reliant on computational tools to predict and optimize aerodynamic and aeromechanical behavior within a compressor. Recent trends in compressor development continue to push for more efficient, lighter weight, and higher performance machines. To meet these demands, designers must better understand the complex nature of the inherently unsteady flow physics inside of a compressor. As physical testing can be costly and time prohibitive, CFD and other computational tools have become the workhorse during design programs.
The objectives of this research were to investigate the aerodynamic and aeromechanical behavior of the Purdue multistage compressor, as well …

Augmented Reality Application Utility For Aviation Maintenance Work Instruction, John Bryan Pourcho
Augmented Reality Application Utility For Aviation Maintenance Work Instruction, John Bryan Pourcho
Open Access Theses
Current aviation maintenance work instructions do not display information effectively enough to prevent costly errors and safety concerns. Aircraft are complex assemblies of highly interrelated components that confound troubleshooting and can make the maintenance procedure difficult (Drury & Gramopadhye, 2001). The sophisticated nature of aircraft maintenance necessitates a revolutionized training intervention for aviation maintenance technicians (United States General Accounting Office, 2003). Quite simply, the paper based job task cards fall short of offering rapid access to technical data and the system or component visualization necessary for working on complex integrated aircraft systems. Possible solutions to this problem include upgraded standards …
Rapid Indirect Trajectory Optimization On Highly Parallel Computing Architectures, Thomas Antony
Rapid Indirect Trajectory Optimization On Highly Parallel Computing Architectures, Thomas Antony
Open Access Theses
Trajectory optimization is a field which can benefit greatly from the advantages offered by parallel computing. The current state-of-the-art in trajectory optimization focuses on the use of direct optimization methods, such as the pseudo-spectral method. These methods are favored due to their ease of implementation and large convergence regions while indirect methods have largely been ignored in the literature in the past decade except for specific applications in astrodynamics. It has been shown that the shortcomings conventionally associated with indirect methods can be overcome by the use of a continuation method in which complex trajectory solutions are obtained by solving …
A Dynamic Stochastic Model For Converging Inbound Air Traffic, Jun Chen
A Dynamic Stochastic Model For Converging Inbound Air Traffic, Jun Chen
Open Access Theses
Weather accounts for the majority of congestion in the National Airspace System which highlights the importance of addressing weather uncertainty to mitigate delays, and this paper presents an effort in this direction. Firstly, a new dynamic stochastic 0-1 Integer Programming (IP) model is proposed, which models the Single Airport Ground Holding Problem (SAGHP) with respect to uncertainty in the separation between flights instead of Airport Acceptance Rate (AAR) or landing capacity. Uncertainty in separation according to different weather conditions is represented through the scenario tree by using stochastic linear programming. Considering time separation constraints instead of AAR constraints, our model …

A principle for designing and fabricating bio-inspired miniature artificial insect flapping wing using flexure rotational hinge design is presented. A systematic approach of selecting rotational hinge stiffness value is proposed. Based on the understanding of flapping wing aerodynamics, a dynamic simulation is constructed using the established quasi-steady model and the wing design. Simulations were performed to gain insight on how different parameters affect the wing rotational response. Based on system resonance a model to predict the optimal rotational hinge stiffness based on given wing parameter and flapping wing kinematic is proposed. By varying different wing parameters, the proposed method is …

Distinguishing Harmonic Behavior Of Longitudinal Resonant Combustion In A Variable Geometry Model Rocket Combustor, Sarah W. Hester
Open Access Theses
Throughout the study of high frequency combustion instability in a single element Continuously Variable Resonance Combustor (CVRC), the excitation of the fundamental longitudinal mode is closely followed by the excitation of higher harmonic modes. In an attempt to establish a heuristic relationship between the appearances of the fundamental mode and its harmonics, several unstable fixed geometry and variable geometry tests from the CVRC are analyzed through traditional Fourier-based methods and alternative signal processing methods such as wavelet analysis and Instantaneous Frequency (IF) Analysis from PC Signal Analysis. Early results led to the conclusion that traditional Fourier-based analysis provides believable and …

Joint Architecture For Reusable Vehicle-Integrated Software (J.A.R.V.I.S), Anthony Mark Kane
Open Access Theses
An integrated software architecture for development of unmanned research vehicles is developed. It has been created under the premise that all unmanned vehicles require a core set of functionality that is common across platforms and that priority should be to the readability and reusability of the code base. The architecture defines the top-level system interfaces allowing internal algorithms to be manipulated without affecting the rest of the system. A robust aerospace toolbox has been developed that provides a means to rapidly prototype algorithms without the need of recreating commonly used functions or the use of expensive, proprietary software.

Evaluating Intensity As A Controller Function For Nextgen Scenarios With Increased Capacity, Caitlin Anne Surakitbanharn
Open Access Theses
Automated separation assurance is the most mature concept to handle increasing airspace traffic and capacity needs, yet the system lacks a way to pre-emptively identify aircraft separation problems. The intensity control measure looks to find situations where if an aircraft pair makes an unplanned change in heading or altitude at the wrong moment, an unrecoverable situation arises. This research analyzes static, open loop air traffic data in an en-route sector to determine how many high intensity aircraft pairs (HIP) exist per minute, and if the intensity measure is a safely manageable function for air traffic controllers. It is found that …
