Historically Graphics Processing Units (GPU) have been used for offloading graphical visualization and made popular in use for video games, but with the development of NVIDIA's CUDA architecture and programing language there has been an increase in the use of GPUs in general purpose (GPGPU) programing. Problems involving large systems of linear equations, such as the Finite Element Analysis (FEA), can benefit greatly from the parallel computing capabilities of GPUs. Characterization of a hypersonic shock tunnel was performed under low enthalpy conditions. A rake was designed and fabricated to measure pitot pressure and heat flux at three axial locations in the test section. Pitot pressures at three locations provided an indication of the inviscid core. Thin film RTD sensors with a fast response time were fabricated to measure the heat flux under these low enthalpy conditions. The Cook-Felderman algorithm was used to estimate the heat flux from the temperature history. Results for the first millisecond of test time showed a probe tip surface temperature increase of 15-20 K and a …

In this work, a numerical investigation was carried out to see the effects of spherical dimple arrays on heat transfer characteristics in a channel. These effects were observed for dimples on the bottom wall of the channel for laminar airflows. A cognitive search algorithm which is developed mimics human cognition in structure and characteristics. This algorithm is developed based on the key aspects of a cognitive system, namely, the use of prior knowledge, communication, and self-organization. An optimization routine utilizing the sequential quadratic programming method is used to develop laminates that are hygrothermally stable in flat-strip configuration and are optimal for extension twist coupling in closed cell configuration. The performance of the laminates obtained from the optimization in terms of the level of extension twist coupling and hygrothermal stability are evaluated and compared to laminates from a previous routine. The forces acting on a flight vehicle are critical for determining its performance. Of particular interest is the hypersonic regime. Force measurements are much more complex in hypersonic flows, where those speeds are simulated in shock tunnels. A force balance for such facilities contains sensitive gages that measure stress waves and ultimately determine the different components of force acting on the model. Acoustic levitation permits the study of droplet dynamics without the effects of surface interactions present in other techniques such as pendant droplet methods. Despite the complexities of the interactions of the acoustic field with the suspended droplet, acoustic levitation provides distinct advantages of controlling morphology of droplets with nanosuspensions post precipitation. The unstable nature of detonation waves is a result of the critical relationship between the hydrodynamic shock and the chemical reactions sustaining the shock. A perturbative analysis of the critical point is quite challenging due to the multiple spatio-temporal scales involved along with the non-linear nature of the shock-reaction mechanism. The author's research attempts to provide detailed resolution of the instabilities at the shock front. The turbocharged direct injection stoichiometric spark ignition gasoline engine has less than diesel full load brake engine thermal efficiencies and much larger than diesel penalties in brake engine thermal efficiencies reducing the load. This engine has, however, a much better power density, and therefore may operate at much higher brake mean effective pressure (BMEP) values over driving cycles thus reducing the fuel economy penalty of the vehicle. This engine also has the advantage of the very well developed three-way catalytic (TWC) converter after treatment to meet future emission regulations. A NACA 0018 airfoil model with a 3-inch chord was mounted into the trisonic wind tunnel at the National Center for Physical Acoustics at the University of Mississippi. Tunnel runs were conducted with the angle of incidence increasing from 0 degrees to 6 degrees at 1 degree increments, while the Mach number was held steady at 0.73. High-speed schlieren images were recorded at a sample rate of 4,000 Hz. A Matlab code was developed to display the spatial power spectral density distribution in the region of the shock.
