Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis Of Columns, Rajkiran Muppavarapu
Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis Of Columns, Rajkiran Muppavarapu
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
In many engineering applications structural components are considered to be beams or columns subjected to a range of external loads such as dead weight, wind, temperature changes etc.In this work a mathematical model has been developed for a sports lighting tower considering it to be a cantilever beam with large deformation. The concept of non-linear P-Delta analysis is applied to the column. Using this model, a tower analysis tool was developed in MATLAB. Using this tool various design alternatives can be examined to evaluate their suitability to a particular task.A number of example problems from the available literature were solved …
Stable Reference Trajectory Modification For Handling Actuator Failure In Control Systems, Ifeolu Olalekan Ogunleye
Stable Reference Trajectory Modification For Handling Actuator Failure In Control Systems, Ifeolu Olalekan Ogunleye
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
The issue of rapidly reconfiguring the reference trajectory under unanticipated actuator failures in order to regain lost performance or aircraft handling qualities is explored. The failures detected in real-time are compensated for by ensuring the input to the system reflects current system conditions. This thesis will also show that only the general structure of the failed system component is needed to achieve successful failure detection and reference trajectory reconfiguration. This approach allows the nominal control structure to remain unchanged in the presence of change flight and system conditions. Acceptable system performance is recovered by detecting the actuator failures in real-time. …
Cfd Analysis Of A Uni-Directional Impulse Turbine For Wave Energy Conversion, Carlos Alberto Velez
Cfd Analysis Of A Uni-Directional Impulse Turbine For Wave Energy Conversion, Carlos Alberto Velez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ocean energy research has grown in popularity in the past decade and has produced various designs for wave energy extraction. This thesis focuses on the performance analysis of a uni-directional impulse turbine for wave energy conversion. Uni-directional impulse turbines can produce uni-directional rotation in bi-directional flow, which makes it ideal for wave energy extraction as the motion of ocean waves are inherently bi-directional. This impulse turbine is currently in use in four of the world’s Oscillating Wave Columns (OWC). Current research to date has documented the performance of the turbine but little research has been completed to understand the flow …
Super-Adiabatic Combustion In Porous Media With Catalytic Enhancement For Thermoelectric Power Conversion, Kyle Thomas Mueller
Super-Adiabatic Combustion In Porous Media With Catalytic Enhancement For Thermoelectric Power Conversion, Kyle Thomas Mueller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The combustion of ultra-lean fuel to air mixtures provides an efficient way to convert the chemical energy of hydrocarbons into useful power. Conventional burning techniques of a mixture have defined flammability limits beyond which a flame cannot self-propagate due to heat losses. Matrix stabilized porous medium combustion is an advanced technique in which a solid porous matrix within the combustion chamber accumulates heat from the hot gaseous products and preheats incoming reactants. This heat recirculation extends the standard flammability limits and allows the burning of ultra-lean fuel mixtures, conserving energy resources, or the burning of gases of low calorific value, …
Hall-Effect Thruster Surface Properties Investigation, David George Zidar
Hall-Effect Thruster Surface Properties Investigation, David George Zidar
Masters Theses
"Surface properties of Hall-effect thruster channel walls play an important role in the performance and lifetime of the device. Physical models of near-wall effects are beginning to be incorporated into thruster simulations, and these models must account for evolution of channel surface properties due to thruster operation. Results from this study show differences in boron nitride channel surface properties from beginning-of-life and after 100's of hours of operation. Two worn thruster channels of different boron nitride grades are compared with their corresponding pristine and shadow-shielded samples. Pristine HP grade boron nitride surface roughness is 9000±700 Å, while the worn sample …

Exploring Increased Productivity Through Employee Engagement, Wayne K. Richards Jr.
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Disengaged employees cost U.S. companies billions of dollars annually in lowered productivity, a cost which has been compounded by the difficult economic situations in the country. The potential for increasing productivity through increased employee engagement was examined in this study. Using personal engagement theory and the theory of planned behavior, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore how the experiences of salaried aerospace employees affected productivity and the financial performance of an organization. Interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of 20 aerospace employees whose responses were codified and analyzed to identify themes. The analysis indicated that (a) …
Translational And Rotational Control Of An Asteroid Orbiting Satellite, Takahiro Kuhara
Translational And Rotational Control Of An Asteroid Orbiting Satellite, Takahiro Kuhara
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The objective of this thesis is to analyze an effective control scheme for an asteroid orbiting satellite. The thesis first summarizes the progress made in the dynamics formulation of such satellites and then provides a theoretical framework for the control system design. The control objective is to maintain a nadir pointing attitude on a circular equatorial orbit. Using established control design techniques, feedback laws are constructed to control both rotational and translational motion of the satellite so that the control objective is achieved. Computer simulations are carried out to illustrate the effectiveness of the control laws.
Shock-Associated Noise Generation In Curved Coanda Turbulent Wall Jets, Caroline P. Lubert, Richard J. Shafer
Shock-Associated Noise Generation In Curved Coanda Turbulent Wall Jets, Caroline P. Lubert, Richard J. Shafer
Department of Mathematics and Statistics - Faculty Scholarship
Curved three-dimensional turbulent Coanda wall jets are present in a multitude of natural and engineering applications. The mechanism by which they form a shock-cell structure is poorly understood, as is the accompanying shock-associated noise (SAN) generation. This paper discusses these phenomena from both a modeling and experimental perspective. The Method of Characteristics is used to rewrite the governing hyperbolic partial differential equations as ordinary differential equations, which are then solved numerically using the Euler predictor-corrector method. The effects of complicating factors -- such as radial expansion and streamline curvature -- on the prediction of shock-cell location are then discussed. This …
Ductile Mode Material Removal Of Ceramics And Semiconductors, Deepak Ravindra
Ductile Mode Material Removal Of Ceramics And Semiconductors, Deepak Ravindra
Dissertations
Ceramics and semiconductors are hard, strong, inert and lightweight. They also have good optical properties, wide energy bandgap and high maximum current density. This combination of properties makes them ideal candidates for tribological, semiconductor, MEMS and optoelectronic applications respectively. Manufacturing these materials without causing surface and subsurface damage is extremely challenging due to their high hardness, brittle characteristics and poor machinability. However, ductile regime machining of these materials is possible due to the high-pressure phase transformation occurring in the material caused by the high compressive stresses induced by the single point diamond tool tip. In this study, to further augment …
Inherent And Model-Form Uncertainty Analysis For Cfd Simulation Of Synthetic Jet Actuators, Daoru Frank Han
Inherent And Model-Form Uncertainty Analysis For Cfd Simulation Of Synthetic Jet Actuators, Daoru Frank Han
Masters Theses
"A mixed aleatory (inherent) and epistemic (model-form) uncertainty quantification (UQ) analysis method was applied to a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling problem of synthetic jet actuators. A test case, (Case 3, flow over a hump model with synthetic jet actuator control) from the CFDVAL2004 workshop was selected to apply the Second-Order Probability framework implemented with a stochastic response surface obtained from Quadrature-Based Non-Intrusive Polynomial Chaos (NIPC). Three uncertainty sources were considered: (1) epistemic uncertainty in turbulence model, (2) aleatory uncertainty in free stream velocity and (3) aleatory uncertainty in actuation frequency. Uncertainties in both long-time averaged and phase averaged quantities …

"Recently, both DoD and NASA have demonstrated increased interest in the development of close proximity operations for space systems. AFRL's Advanced Sciences and Technology Research Institute for Astrodynamics (ASTRIA) has defined several key research topics relevant to military priorities, with one area of critical importance being the inspection and observation of low Earth orbit resident space objects (RSOs). This study investigates the feasibility of using a low-thrust cold-gas propulsion system to effectively and accurately facilitate resident space object inspection. Specifically, this study focuses on the Missouri S&T Satellite mission (M-SAT) as a means to demonstrate autonomous RSO inspection. This paper …
Shaker Table Vibration Testing Of A Microsatellite, Tonya Michelle Sanders
Shaker Table Vibration Testing Of A Microsatellite, Tonya Michelle Sanders
Masters Theses
"In the satellite development process, structural testing is a means to gain confidence in analytical models and ultimately support qualification of the spacecraft for flight. Vibration testing, in particular, is motivated by the safety considerations of crew or launch personnel, the survivability of delicate hardware and electronics, and the avoidance of large stresses that cause structural fatigue or failure. The subject of this thesis is concerned with the shaker table vibration testing of a microsatellite pair designed and built by students at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Missouri. A finite element model (FEM) used in structural …
Magnetometer-Only Attitude Determination With Application To The M-Sat Mission, Jason D. Searcy
Magnetometer-Only Attitude Determination With Application To The M-Sat Mission, Jason D. Searcy
Masters Theses
"The topic of this thesis focuses on attitude determination for small satellites. The method described uses only a magnetometer to resolve the three-axis attitude of the satellite. The primary challenge is that magnetometers only instantaneously resolve two axes of a satellite's attitude. Typically, magnetometers are used in conjunction with other sensors to resolve all three axes. However, by using a filter over an adequately long orbit arc, the magnetometer data can yield all the information necessary. The magnetic field data are filtered to obtain the magnetic field derivative vector, which are combined with the magnetic field vector to fully resolve …
Uncertainty Quantification Integrated To Computational Fluid Dynamic Modeling Of Synthetic Jet Actuators, Srikanth Adya
Uncertainty Quantification Integrated To Computational Fluid Dynamic Modeling Of Synthetic Jet Actuators, Srikanth Adya
Masters Theses
"The Point Collocation Non-Intrusive Polynomial Chaos (NIPC) method was applied to a stochastic synthetic jet actuator problem to demonstrate the integration of computationally efficient uncertainty quantification to the high-fidelity CFD modeling of Synthetic Jet Actuators. The uncertainty quantification approach was first implemented in two stochastic model problem cases for the prediction of peak exit plane velocity using a Fluid Dynamic Based analytical model of the Synthetic Jet Actuator, which is computationally less expensive than CFD simulations. The NIPC results were compared with direct Monte Carlo sampling results. To demonstrate the efficient uncertainty quantification in CFD modeling of synthetic jet actuators, …
A Numerical Study Of Novel Drag Reduction Techniques For Blunt Bodies In Hypersonic Flows, Christopher Marley
A Numerical Study Of Novel Drag Reduction Techniques For Blunt Bodies In Hypersonic Flows, Christopher Marley
Masters Theses
"Numerical simulations of a full three-dimensional hemispherical body in hypersonic flow are conducted and innovative techniques involving forward injection of gas from the stagnation point of the sphere are investigated; techniques include annular (ring) and swirled injection both with and without upstream energy deposition. Objectives of the analysis are the assessment of 1) drag reductions achieved on the blunt body (including the detrimental drag effect caused by the forward-facing injection itself) and 2) stability characteristics of the jet. Studies are conducted at free-stream Mach numbers of 10 and 6.5 at standard atmospheric conditions corresponding to 30 km altitude. While centered …
Computational Investigation Of Plasma Actuator As An Active Flow Control Strategy Of Laminar Separation Bubbles, Justin Roger Aholt
Computational Investigation Of Plasma Actuator As An Active Flow Control Strategy Of Laminar Separation Bubbles, Justin Roger Aholt
Masters Theses
"A parametric computational study designed to examine the plausibility of an external body force generated by active means, such as a plasma actuator, as a means of controlling a Laminar Separation Bubble (LSB) over an airfoil at low Reynolds numbers was conducted. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was employed to characterize the effect that a body force, localized to a small region tangent to the airfoil surface, might have on an LSB. In this study, the effects of altering the strength and location of the "actuator" on the size and location of the LSB and on the aerodynamic performance of the …
Quantifying Model Uncertainty Using Measurement Uncertainty Standards, Harsheel Rajesh Shah
Quantifying Model Uncertainty Using Measurement Uncertainty Standards, Harsheel Rajesh Shah
Masters Theses
"Model uncertainty quantification is mainly concerned with the problem of determining whether the observed data is consistent with the model prediction. In real world, there is always a disagreement between a simulation model prediction and the reality that the model intends to represent. Our increased dependence on computer models emphasizes on model uncertainty which is present due to uncertainties in model parameters, lack of appropriate knowledge, assumptions and simplification of processes. In addition, when models predict multi-variate data, the experimental observation and model predictions are highly correlated. Thus, quantifying the uncertainty has a basic requirement of comparison between observation and …

Heat Transfer Augmentation In Rectangular Ducts Due To Passive Flow Destabilization, James Jackson Tinsley
Masters Theses
"The following thesis documents the comparison of surface enhancements in rectangular ducts for heat transfer enhancement of the air-side of off-road heat exchangers. Two sets of experiments were completed, one utilizing air as the working fluid, and the other utilizing water. Five air geometries and four water geometries were studied, including those with crosswise bumps, longitudinal vortex generators, and a unique rifling geometry. A smooth test section was also tested in the water experiments to verify the experimental setup. Such verification had been performed previously for the air experiments by Rucker [2007]. The experiment involved an applied constant heat flux …

Mapping Galileo's Trajectory, Mark Woods
Mapping Galileo's Trajectory, Mark Woods
Aerospace Engineering
The NASA Galileo mission was mapped out using a patched conics approximation. Galileo launched from Earth, underwent a gravity assist from Venus back to Earth for another gravity assist. Galileo then came back to Earth for one more gravity assist to propel it to Jupiter. A simulation ignoring all perturbations (i.e. third body effects, zonal (harmonics, solar wind, drag) was carried out. The simulation was able to make it to the final Earth flyby before diverging from the actual trajectory. The simulated and actual flyby dates all differed by less than 5 hours, and the simulated and actual flyby altitudes …
Analysis Of Surface Augmentation Of Airfoil Sections Via Flow Visualization Techniques, John Louis Vento
Analysis Of Surface Augmentation Of Airfoil Sections Via Flow Visualization Techniques, John Louis Vento
Aerospace Engineering
This report details an experiment done to verify the effectiveness of two passive flow control systems on two-dimensional airfoil sections. The flow control was tested on two types of airfoils: a symmetric NACA 0011, intended to represent an airplane in cruise, and a NACA16611, intended to represent an aircraft with flaps extended. Two types of passive systems were employed, a dimple surface augmentation, similar to a golf ball, and a grit system located at 20% chord. Airfoils without either augmentation were tested as a control case. Using a water tunnel and dye to perform flow visualization, the effects of each …
Flight Testing In A Simulation Based Environment, David W. Babka
Flight Testing In A Simulation Based Environment, David W. Babka
Aerospace Engineering
Over the past two decades performance flight testing of full scale aircraft has transferred some of the testing workload to simulation based systems. Flight testing full scale aircraft in the real world environment has always been expensive, especially now with the rise in aviation fuel costs. Additionally, new emerging technologies require extensive testing and doing so in the full scale environment is cost prohibitive. A cheaper alternative is to test systems in a simulation based environment. Not only can aircraft be simulated via a computer, but all the aircrafts systems can be modeled in the simulation. Furthermore, most of the …
Experimental Flow Visualization For Corrugated Airfoils At Low Reynolds Number Including Development Of A Pitch And Plunge Fixture, Jeremy Ryan Sparks
Experimental Flow Visualization For Corrugated Airfoils At Low Reynolds Number Including Development Of A Pitch And Plunge Fixture, Jeremy Ryan Sparks
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Micro Air Vehicles (MAV’s) have small size and extreme maneuverability which makes them ideal for surveillance. Propulsion mechanisms include propellers, rotors, and flapping airfoils. Flapping motions, along with biologically-inspired wing profiles, are of interest due to their use of natural physics. Corrugated airfoil structures appears to have poor aerodynamic performance at higher Reynolds numbers, but serve well at Re<10,000. Understanding flow structures around corrugated profiles and comparing them to a standard airfoil will aid in understanding how these corrugated profiles perform well and have been adopted by some of nature’s most acrobatic flyers. Motivation for this investigation is to compare static flow visualizations of corrugated profiles to a standard National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) airfoil from low to high angles of attack and further observe flow structure development of a pitching and plunging flat plate at a Re<10,000 and a Strouhal number relevant to natural fliers. The static visualization was conducted at Re=1,000 with a NACA 0012 airfoil and two corrugated models. The Pitch and Plunge Fixture (PPF) developed was constructed by simplifying flapping wings as a two degree of freedom motion in plunge (translation) and pitch (rotation). Results obtained from the PPF were compared with a numerical simulation.
The Influence Of Pressure Relaxation On The Structure Of An Axial Vortex, Robert L. Ash, Irfan Zardadkhan, Allan J. Zuckerwar
The Influence Of Pressure Relaxation On The Structure Of An Axial Vortex, Robert L. Ash, Irfan Zardadkhan, Allan J. Zuckerwar
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
Governing equations including the effects of pressure relaxation have been utilized to study an incompressible, steady-state viscous axial vortex with specified far-field circulation. When sound generation is attributed to a velocity gradient tensor-pressure gradient product, the modified conservation of momentum equations that result yield an exact solution for a steady, incompressible axial vortex. The vortex velocity profile has been shown to closely approximate experimental vortex measurements in air and water over a wide range of circulation-based Reynolds numbers. The influence of temperature and humidity on the pressure relaxation coefficient in air has been examined using theoretical and empirical approaches, and …

Uniform And Partially Uniform Redistribution Rules, Florentin Smarandache, Jean Dezert
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
This paper introduces two new fusion rules for combining quantitative basic belief assignments. These rules although very simple have not been proposed in literature so far and could serve as useful alternatives because of their low computation cost with respect to the recent advanced Proportional Conflict Redistribution rules developed in the DSmT framework.

Evidence Supporting Measure Of Similarity For Reducing The Complexity In Information Fusion, Xinde Li, Jean Dezert, Florentin Smarandache, Xinhan Huang
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
This paper proposes a new solution for reducing the number of sources of evidence to be combined in order to diminish the complexity of the fusion process required in some applications where the real-time constraint and strong computing resource limitation are of prime importance. The basic idea consists in selecting, among the whole set of sources of evidence, only the biggest subset of sources which are not too contradicting based on a criterion of Evidence Supporting Measure of Similarity (ESMS) in order to process solely the coherent information received. The ESMS criterion serves actually as a generic tool for outlier …
Development Of A Heat Transfer Test Rig For Finding Heat Transfer Characteristics Of Liquid Methane, Sergio Flores
Development Of A Heat Transfer Test Rig For Finding Heat Transfer Characteristics Of Liquid Methane, Sergio Flores
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Most large scale rocket engines use a regeneratively cooled system to cool the rocket engine using either the rocket fuel or oxidizer. The use of liquid methane as a rocket fuel is an emerging technology proving to have several advantages over current rocket fuels. However, liquid methane is lacking the extensive research as a rocket fuel compared to highly used rocket fuels like liquid hydrogen. A heat transfer test rig was built with the goal to characterize the heat transfer characteristics of liquid methane as it passes through a heated channel. The development of the test rig underwent considerations designed …
Determination Of Critical Parameters For Solar Probe Plus Shielding, Sergio Rafael Mendez
Determination Of Critical Parameters For Solar Probe Plus Shielding, Sergio Rafael Mendez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
A methodology to determine critical design parameters such as critical "design" particle size, and critical "design" impact speed for the shielding of the Solar Probe Plus spacecraft was developed in this thesis. Several critical components and surfaces of the spacecraft such as the Solar Array North, the Thermal Protection System, and the ISIS Instruments were analyzed in this study. The methodology determines the critical "design" particle size based on the required reliability or probability of no impact. Current NASA methods do not provide means to calculate critical "design" impact speeds for missions such as Solar Probe Plus, where the distributions …
The Effect Of Mmod Porosity On Crater Depth After Hypervelocity Impact, David Ledesma
The Effect Of Mmod Porosity On Crater Depth After Hypervelocity Impact, David Ledesma
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
A significant amount of research has been conducted in the last decades on the design of spacecraft shielding for the impacts of Micro Meteoroid and Orbital Debris (MMOD). Through the use of hydrocodes, empirical data, and physical testing, researchers have been successful in studying a wide range of shielding configurations. However, a very limited amount of research has been conducted to understand the effect that the porosity and irregular shape of MMOD has on the damage they create on spacecraft components.
The work presented in this thesis addresses the modeling of MMDO porosity by using the CTH hydrocode to investigate …
