AFIT is in the process of designing a Space Shuttle experiment designated as the Rigidized Inflatable Get-Away-Special Experiment (RIGEX) to study the effects of microgravity on the deployment of rigidizable composite structures. Once in space, the experiment will inflate and rigidize three composite structures and perform a vibration analysis on each by exciting the tubes using piezoelectric patches and collecting data via an accelerometer. This paper presents the structural and vibration analysis of the RIGEX assembly and inflatable composite tubes using ABAQUS Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software. This study established a weight optimized configuration design of a joined-wing sensor-craft. The joined-wing aircraft concept fulfills a proposed long-endurance surveillance mission that contains an antenna structure embedded in the wing skin. The analysis was completed utilizing structural optimization, aerodynamic analyses, and response surface methodology. A sample of 62 joined-wing configurations were weight optimized. Each optimized structure was determined through a change of skin, spar, and rib thickness in the wing box by determining trimmed maneuver and gust conditions for critical flight mission points. Ongoing assembly and maintenance activities at the International Space Station (ISS) require much more extravehicular activity (EVA) than did the earlier U.S. Space Shuttle missions. It is thus desirable to determine and analyze, and possibly foresee, as accurately as possible what radiation exposures crew members involved in EVAs will experience in order to minimize risks and to establish exposure limits that must not to be exceeded. Using a spectrometer and high temperature fiber optics the relative intensities of the near-infrared, visible, and ultraviolet radiation emitted from the C2*, CH*, and OH* radicals were measured at eight discrete locations within the Ultra Compact Combustor test rig. Blackbody radiation in the near infrared also was observed. The tests were conducted at various g-loadings and overall equivalence ratios and with various air hole configurations. These measurements were compared to determine the effect of these changes on the radiation emitted. The feasibility of using a sparse array of mirrors in a satellite system is being evaluated. This study focused on the control laws necessary for achieving the minimization of the effect of vibration which happens at the primary mirror of the satellite, by using the eigenstructure assignment technique. As greater capability is demanded of space-based assets, their size and complexity are growing. Inflatable, rigidizable structures offer significant improvements in the areas of weight, size, and complexity over traditional mechanically deployed systems. These structures are not well understood and little testing of them has been done in the space environment. Widespread acceptance of these technologies will not be achieved without significant reduction in the risk of using inflatable, rigidizable structures in space. Presented in this work are the results of an investigation of alternative means for powering spacecraft and launch vehicles with energy sources other than chemical combustion. Nuclear thermal propulsion and the energy release of a nuclear spin isomer present potential for increased rocket performance with compact, high-energy fuel sources replacing the combustion engines of the Delta IV-H 1st and 2nd stage vehicles. Analysis of historical fission designs along with the isomer hafnium-178-m2 in a particle bed configuration was conducted. Complete characterization of the space environment in support of the United States goal of space Situational Awareness is not currently achievable. When confronted with recent increases in the deployment and miniaturization of microsatellites by numerous nations, the questions of foreign space capabilities are magnified. This study sought to determine the feasibility of and experimentally demonstrate a microsatellite capability to autonomously loiter about and track a target satellite. The feasibility of satellite operations in close proximity to a reference satellite is of interest for both civilian and military applications. One such operation is circular circumnavigation in a time period less than the orbital period of the reference satellite. This thesis investigates a guidance scheme for such maneuvers involving impulsive burns at specific points within a specified toroidal region centered on the circular-orbiting reference satellite. Two analytical methods for determining the magnitude and direction of the impulses are demonstrated. These methods are then used as initial estimates in an optimization scheme to produce the minimum total required impulse.

The field of structural health monitoring (SHM) attempts to reduce labor and cost by allowing technicians to monitor selected properties of an aircraft's structure to detect impending failure. This research examines methods to detect damage to a thermal protection system (TPS) tile using representative 2024-T3 aluminum plates. The purpose of this study was to investigate pilot-induced oscillations (PIO) and determine a method by which PIO tendency rating could be predicted. In particular, longitudinal PIO in the presence of rate-limited actuators were singled out for examination. Sinusoidal input/triangular output describing function techniques using Nichols charts were used. A new criterion dubbed Gap Criterion was calculated for PIO sensitivity. This criterion consists of the product of pilot gain necessary to cause PIO and the normalized maximum amplitude of the commanded actuator. For distributed remote sensing architectures to be useful for collecting data, it is essential to have a methodology for relating orbital formation parameters to remote sensing requirements. Utilizing the characteristics of formation parameters, an orbital design approach is developed that establishes a satellite formation from a desired instantaneous spatial distribution as viewed from a target ground site. To maintain a conceptually basic representation, a geometric approach is used to develop the correlating algorithm. This tool will enable mission planning for orbital formations as well as future concept exploration.

Raven is an award-winning optical system design paradigm that couples commercially available hardware and software along with custom data analysis and control software to produce low-cost, autonomous, and very capable space surveillance systems. The first product of the Raven program was a family of telescopes capable of generating world-class optical observation data of deep-space satellites. The key to this system was the use of astrometric techniques for position and brightness data. Rather than delivering conventional munitions through the airspace of uncooperative nations, a constellation of space-stored weapons could potentially target any point on the Earth and arrive within the time it takes to de-orbit and re-enter through the atmosphere. The research involves applying the dynamics of atmospheric re-entry to a Common Aero Vehicle (CAV) and defining a footprint of attainable touchdown points. Three dimple patterns were investigated to ascertain their relative effectiveness on controlling boundary layer separation from a low-pressure turbine blade. The three cases included a single row of dimples at 65% of the axial chord with 2.22 cm spacing, a single row of dimples at 65% of the axial chord with 4.44 cm spacing, and a two-row staggered pattern with rows at 65% and 76% of the axial chord with 4.44 cm spacing. The multiple row case was such that the center of the upstream dimple set at the midpoint between two downstream dimples. The dimple spacing was measured center-on-center. …

Effects of a variable contact load on the high cycle fretting fatigue behavior of Ti-6AL-4V were investigated. Experimental tests were performed using a new test setup capable of applying a contact load varying in amplitude, frequency, and phase and independently measuring shear forces on opposite sides of a specimen. Finite element analysis (FEA) of experimental and idealized loading conditions was performed and local mechanistic parameters and the Modified Shear Stress Range (MSSR) fatigue parameter were determined. Two-dimensional regular and Mach reflections have been studied in the Mach 4.96 dual-solution domain for a 25° and 26° double-fin inlet. The steady-state computational Mach and regular reflections were subjected to magnetogasdynamic forces to determine whether these forces could be used as a possible flow control mechanism. The numerical code employed for this research solved the inviscid Euler equations with added source terms for the ponderomotive force and accompanying energy interactions. This study investigated the atmospheric reentry of the Space Maneuver Vehicle from low-earth orbit using an entry guidance concept similar to the Space Shuttle. The Space Maneuver Vehicle was modeled as a point mass with aerodynamic properties as determined using Newtonian impact theory. For the rarefied-flow transition regime bridging formulae are used to capture the effects of both hypersonic continuum flow and free molecular flow. Constraints to the reentry are developed and a reentry corridor is defined in the drag-velocity plane. Bank angle modulation is established as the primary means for controlling drag and range. This study investigated the performance of five Two-Stage-To-Orbit reusable launch vehicles (RLV), with stages propelled by rocket engines, turbojet engines and Rocket Based Combined Cycle (RBCC) engines. Horizontal versus vertical takeoff launch and direct versus lifting ascent trajectories were also studied. A method was conceived using a 3 degree of freedom optimization program, stage inert mass fractions, and a fixed gross takeoff weight (GTOW) of 1,000,000 lbf to determine each RLVs performance based on payload weight delivered to orbit and total vehicle inert weight. Traditionally flight control systems have used linearized equations of motion solved around a single trim point. This thesis proposes a nested-loop controller directly solved from the equations of motion. The control equations were developed as a solution to asymmetrically trimmed flight conditions. A two-loop design was proposed for the controller. The outer loop modeled the aircraft as a point mass and all forces were balanced to find the aircraft states. Three-dimensional multi-element wings are simulated to investigate slat and flap aerodynamics using Detached-Eddy Simulation. The computations are performed by solving the Navier-Stokes equations on unstructured grids. All of the computed cases include the main wing with a half-span flap deflected to 39 degrees and a three-quarter-span slat deflected to 6 degrees. Computations of the model, which simulates a landing configuration at 10 degrees angle of attack and a chord-based Reynolds number of 3.7 million, are validated with surface pressure measurements acquired at the NASA Ames 7- by 10-Foot Wind Tunnel. The development of viscous effects modeling using pure Cartesian grids with cut cells at the surface has been hampered by the widely varying control volume sizes associated with the mesh refinement and the cut cells associated with the solid surface. This scheme removes the cells adjacent to the surface from the control volume formulation.
