This paper presents the development of a novel aerodynamic model tailored for the Bio-Inspired Rotating Empennage (BIRE), a non-traditional fixed-wing aircraft empennage inspired by avian flight. The BIRE replaces the conventional vertical stabilizer with an extra degree of freedom for the horizontal stabilizer, which is allowed to rotate about the body-fixed x axis. This empennage is similar to the tail of a bird, and allows control of both longitudinal and lateral moments. However, such a design introduces complex nonlinear longitudinal and lateral aerodynamic interactions, not typically accounted for in most fixed-wing aircraft aerodynamic models below stall. This work presents a …

The Atmosphere Waves Experiment (AWE) is a NASA mission launched on November 9, 2023, and installed on the International Space Station (ISS). Its primary goal is to detect and characterize atmospheric gravity waves (AGWs) by measuring Earth’s mesospheric hydroxyl (OH) airglow with its key instrument, the Advanced Mesospheric Temperature Mapper (AMTM). Since its deployment, AWE has been quantifying the seasonal and regional variability of AGWs, investigating their occurrence and potential sources, and enabling the assessment of their broader impact on the atmosphere by comparing measurements at different altitudes by other instruments. AWE has collected extensive imagery and temperature data capturing …

An aircraft’s shape has a direct impact on the lift and drag it produces. In the early stages of designing an aircraft on a computer, engineers work to improve aircraft performance and efficiency by considering various shapes and configurations. Engineers use computer programs to analyze different designs and predict how each would perform in real-world conditions. Once an approximate aircraft shape is selected, adjustments to the shape can further improve the aircraft’s lift and drag characteristics. Engineers calculate a set of values called sensitivities that indicate which parts of the geometry should be changed to increase lift or reduce drag. …
Investigating Stability Of Cone-Derived Hypersonic Waverider Vehicles Via Design Space Exploration, Adam S. Weaver
Investigating Stability Of Cone-Derived Hypersonic Waverider Vehicles Via Design Space Exploration, Adam S. Weaver
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
It may come as no surprise that man-made objects flying at 5, 10, or even 25 the speed of sound (termed hypersonic) are difficult to design, inefficient in flight, and expensive to deploy. Most hypersonic vehicles are effectuated in ballistics, which simplify aerodynamic considerations owing to their fixed trajectory. However, maneuverable hypersonic vehicles can revolutionize commercial flight, national defense, and space travel. One candidate for such missions are waverider vehicles. Waverider vehicles cruise on a cushion of air generated by its own shock wave, essentially enjoying extra lift without any extra drag penalties (which are usually inherent to extra …
Sensitivity Analysis Of A High-Power Wireless Power Transfer Charging Pad For Heavy-Duty Electric Vehicles To Inform Thermal Management, Jorge A. Hernandez-Ramiro
Sensitivity Analysis Of A High-Power Wireless Power Transfer Charging Pad For Heavy-Duty Electric Vehicles To Inform Thermal Management, Jorge A. Hernandez-Ramiro
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
As the world shifts to net zero carbon emissions, many challenges lie ahead. Currently, heavy-duty vehicles produce a large amount of pollutants that are released into the air, affecting air quality in small and large cities. Transitioning heavy-duty vehicles, such as trucks and buses, into electric vehicles can help resolve this problem.
Electric vehicles and the infrastructure to support them are becoming a viable solution to combating climate change. By no means is electrification perfect yet. Concerns like range anxiety have made the transition to electrifying transportation a slow process. However, implementing Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) charging pads is a …

Data-Driven D Region Model (D3r) Svdd: Software Version Description Document (Svdd), James Vincent Eccles
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
This is the Software Version Description Document of the Data-Driven D Region (D3R) model. There are 2 main distributions: (a) D3R designed for containerized deployments (D3Rc) and (b) D3R designed for testing and development. These two distributions are maintained in parallel, and this document describes both. The D3R for containerization is typically provided to customers. The D3R model is a physics-based model for calculating electron density profiles across the D Region ionosphere altitudes (50 km to 95 km) and E Region altitudes (95 km to 120 km) for any given geolocation. The model has two main programs: one to solve …

Lifting-Line Predictions For The Ideal Twist Effectiveness Of Spanwise Continuous And Discrete Control Surfaces, Zachary S. Montgomery, Douglas F. Hunsaker, James J. Joo
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
Modern materials and manufacturing technologies have allowed the construction of morphing wings that are able to continuously vary certain airfoil parameters such as twist, camber, or control surface deflection as a function of span. This work presents a twist effectiveness parameter as a means of comparing the ideal aerodynamic efficiency of spanwise continuous control surfaces (morphing wings) and spanwise discrete control surfaces (standard wings). A numerical algorithm is used to compute the twist effectiveness of both continuous and discrete control-surface designs over a wide range of planform shapes with evenly spaced actuation for inviscid, incompressible flow. Results included here show …

Stabilizing A Bio-Inspired Rotating Empennage Fighter Aircraft In Multiple Trim Scenarios, Benjamin C. Moulton, Matthew W. Harris, Douglas F. Hunsaker
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations
This paper considers the problem of stabilizing a bio-inspired fighter aircraft at its Air Combat Maneuver Condition in steady level and coordinated-turning flight. The aircraft equations of motion are linearized, and an infinite-horizon linear quadratic regulator design is conducted. The open-loop system is unstable in the short period and Dutch roll modes. This is mitigated in the closed-loop system, which is analyzed in the time and frequency domains. Included in the simulation dynamics are first-order actuator models, actuator deflection limits, and actuator rate limits. These are particularly important for this bio-inspired aircraft because control actuation requires rotation of the empennage, …

Evaluation Of Stability And Controllability Of The Multiple Trim Solutions For A Bio-Inspired Rotating Empennage Fighter Aircraft, Benjamin C. Moulton, Christian R. Bolander, Douglas F. Hunsaker
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations
Aircraft with non-traditional actuators tend to have multiple or infinite trim solutions for a single flight condition. For a given flight condition the bio-inspired rotating empennage fighter aircraft has multiple distinct trim solutions with varying tail rotation angles. In the present work these trim solutions are evaluated from various perspectives including: minimum drag, dynamic stability, controllability, and degree of controllability. The results of these analyses can be used to further constrain a trim solver routine such that a trim solution is found meeting a desired criterion. The purpose of the present paper is to evaluate the multiple trim solutions for …

Comparison Of Co-Located Mid-Latitude Sporadic E And Simone Wind Observations, Ivana Molina, Kenneth Obenberger, Jorge Chau, Matthias Clahsen
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
Sporadic E are localized layers of enhanced metallic ionization that form in the E region of the ionosphere (Mathews, 1998). They are usually observed between 95 and 120 km altitude with a thickness in altitude ranging from ~100 m to a few kilometers. Studying these layers is important, as their characteristics and variability impact the propagation of HF radio waves. At mid-latitudes, the generation of sporadic E is most often explained by the wind shear theory, where these layers form due to the convergence of ions generated by vertical shears in the horizontal components of the neutral wind. The primary …
