An Experimental Study Of A Sting-Mounted Circulation Control Wing, Steven J. Lacher
An Experimental Study Of A Sting-Mounted Circulation Control Wing, Steven J. Lacher
Theses and Dissertations
This wind tunnel study investigated the lift, drag, and pitching moment of a 20% thick, 8.5% camber, partial elliptical cross-section, single blowing slot, 2.325 aspect ratio, rectangular circulation control wing. The AFIT 5-foot wind tunnel was used. Lift and drag were referenced to the wind axis. The Reynolds number was 500,000 for all tests. Angle of attack was varied from -6 to 16 degrees and the effects of pulsed blowing were investigated. Effects of tripping the Coanda jet with a small flow barrier attached spanwise along the Coanda surface were also studied. Results indicate that there is a limit on …
Experimental Investigation Into The Effects Of Riblets On Compressor Cascade Performance, James A. Rothenflue
Experimental Investigation Into The Effects Of Riblets On Compressor Cascade Performance, James A. Rothenflue
Theses and Dissertations
The effects of adding riblets to the blades of a subsonic, linear compressor cascade were investigated at the Air Force Institute of Technology. Three blade configurations were tested, including a set of unmodified NACA 64- A905 series blades, a set with riblets applied to the suction surface, and a set with riblets on the pressure surface. Performance was evaluated over a wide range of Reynolds numbers, and at low and high free stream turbulence levels. Cascade performance was evaluated in terms of total pressure loss coefficient, turning angle, and static pressure rise. No riblet configuration offered robust cascade performance improvements; …
The Effect Of Angle Of Incidence And Reynolds Number On Heat Transfer In A Linear Turbine Cascade, Steven G. Meschwitz
The Effect Of Angle Of Incidence And Reynolds Number On Heat Transfer In A Linear Turbine Cascade, Steven G. Meschwitz
Theses and Dissertations
The AFIT linear Turbine Cascade Test Facility was used to study the effect of the small changes in the angle of incidence on turbine blade convective heat transfer. Other parameters studied were the model Reynolds number and the freestream turbulence level. Characterization tests, performed to determine the feasibility of the study were followed by a series of tests designed to separate the effects of the angle of incidence, Reynolds number, and freestream turbulence level on convective heat transfer. For any given freestream turbulence level or angle of incidence, there is an increase in the heat transfer coefficient for an increase …
Analysis Of The Effects Of Removing Nose Ballast From The F-15 Eagle, Richard L. Bennett
Analysis Of The Effects Of Removing Nose Ballast From The F-15 Eagle, Richard L. Bennett
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the results of removing lead ballast from the nose section of the F-15 Air Superiority fighter. The goal of the investigation was to determine if aircraft handling qualities remained acceptable with the ballast removed, and also to determine what improvements in aircraft nose pointing authority resulted. Actual F-15 weight reports were used to calculate the worst case aft center of gravity location shift due to the ballast removal. Several configurations with different center of gravity locations (based on various amounts of lead weights removed) were used for comparison to the baseline aircraft. Moments of inertia were calculated …
Comparative Analysis Of Guidance Algorithms For The Hyper Velocity Missile And Afti/F-16, Edward G. Rice
Comparative Analysis Of Guidance Algorithms For The Hyper Velocity Missile And Afti/F-16, Edward G. Rice
Theses and Dissertations
This project has provided me with endless intrigue. In considering the problem of guiding a hyper-velocity missile from a moving platform to a moving target, a common perception said it was just another Kalman Filtration design challenge. I began with lofty intentions of running a full up extended Kalman filter simulation but I became enthralled with the limited work available on the physical limitations of basic guidance algorithms. This became the emphasis of this project. The best filter scheme cannot overcome a guidance algorithms physical limitation. Only with an understanding of these limitations can one effectively integrate a guidance scheme …
Application Of Mixed H2/H∞ Optimization, John J. Kusnierek
Application Of Mixed H2/H∞ Optimization, John J. Kusnierek
Theses and Dissertations
A non-conservative optimization technique is utilized to examine the problem of minimizing the 2 norm of one transfer function subject to an ∞-norm bound on another transfer function. For single exogenous input/ single exogenous output systems this non conservative mixed solution is shown to be up to 5% better in a specific example. For single exogenous input/two exogenous output systems the mixed solution is shown to be up to 27% better than a previous technique for a specific example. Finally, a two exogenous input/two exogenous output practical system is examined to demonstrate the utility of this mixed optimization technique.
Application Of Low Thrust Propulsion Techniques To Satellite Attitude Control Systems, Jeffrey J. Abbott
Application Of Low Thrust Propulsion Techniques To Satellite Attitude Control Systems, Jeffrey J. Abbott
Theses and Dissertations
Equation of motion for a satellite controlled through continuous, low thrust propulsion systems are analyzed through numerical integration techniques. The equations of motion are derived using the Euler Moment Equations. The properties of the satellite model are based upon the Intelsat VII design of communications satellite. A simple rate and error feedback controller is used in providing active attitude control about two and three axes. Perturbation models are created and applied based upon the satellite model. Parameters varied include thrust levels and controller deadband widths. System response times, pointing accuracy, and total impulse required for attitude control are determined as …
Higher-Order Thickness Expansions For Cylindrical Shells, Randy A. Smith
Higher-Order Thickness Expansions For Cylindrical Shells, Randy A. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Eight variations of higher-order transverse shear deformation (HTSD) theory were developed for composite shells. Three attributes were varied to produce the eight variations. These attributes include the order of the thickness expansions used to approximate the shell shape factors and the assumed linear displacement field and the nonlinearity of transverse shear strain. Several cylindrical shell problems were investigated using SHELL, a finite- element code with a 36 degree of freedom cylindrical shell element. MACSYMA, a symbolic manipulation code, was used to formulate the element independent stiffness arrays for each variation of the theory. When all nonlinear strain- displacement terms for …
Investigation Of Advanced Aircraft Performance Measures Of Merit Including New Agility Metrics, Bruce A. Fox
Investigation Of Advanced Aircraft Performance Measures Of Merit Including New Agility Metrics, Bruce A. Fox
Theses and Dissertations
Advanced aircraft performance measures of merit have been proposed and individually analyzed by various researchers. These metrics have been consolidated into a single computer code as part of this research effort. This code was used to study the relationships between the advanced metrics, aircraft design metrics and an aircraft's trajectory performance. The study found a linear relationship existed between the advanced metrics and the design metrics. This relationship was used to quantify the required levels of the advanced metrics which would give desired changes in trajectory performance. The results showed that advanced metrics could be applied only to very specific …

Model Identification And Control System Design For The Lambda Unmanned Research Vehicle, Gerald A. Swift
Theses and Dissertations
Research for this thesis centered on the Lambda Unmanned Research Vehicle (URV), an asset of the Flight Dynamics Directorate, Wright Laboratory Patterson AFB. The following tasks were accomplished: (1) a linear, state-space, small perturbation model was developed for both the longitudinal and lateral directional dynamics of the vehicles, and (2) pitch rate roll rate, and yaw rate flight controllers were designed using classical and multivariable feedback methods. The parameters of the linear, state space, small perturbation model were estimated from actual flight test data. Digital Datcom was first used to estimate stability and control derivatives from the vehicle's geometry. Maximum …

This thesis develops a simulation that emulates a Litton LN-94 INS. Real time simulation is achieved for a stationary navigation case and a straight-and-level flight trajectory are provided to exercise the simulation dynamics. The user interface is simple and requires little previous knowledge to operate. The communication link with the MILSTD 1553B bus provide a realistic environment in which to collect and analyze data. The simulation is processed on an 80386 IBM compatible personal computer. A 23-state INS error model is implemented and integration is performed by a fifth-order Kutta-Merson routine. The simulation is interfaced to a plotting routine and …
Experimental Evaluation Of Design Variables For Two-Dimensional Confined Jet Thrust Vector Control Nozzles, Timothy M. Hawkes
Experimental Evaluation Of Design Variables For Two-Dimensional Confined Jet Thrust Vector Control Nozzles, Timothy M. Hawkes
Theses and Dissertations
An experimental study of the axial and vectoring performance of two - dimensional (2-D) confined jet thrust vector control (CJTVC) nozzles was performed. The effects of adding secondary injection ports and changing exit height and secondary injection port location were studied on several 2-D CJTVC nozzles. The axial and vectoring performance results for these nozzles were measured over a range of pressure ratios. An analytical method for predicting flow separation was found to be applicable to these nozzles. Guidelines for designing 2-D CJTVC nozzles, that can be vectored using secondary injection, were established.
Transient Heat Transfer Measurements On A Film Cooled Flat Plate In A Shock Tube, Rakhman Gul
Transient Heat Transfer Measurements On A Film Cooled Flat Plate In A Shock Tube, Rakhman Gul
Theses and Dissertations
During this study a simple model of a flat plate was chosen to determine heat flux from a high speed flow behind a shock wave into the film cooled flat plate. An electrical analog was used to convert the output of the heat flux gages into heat flux. Free stream turbulence within the flow behind the shock wave and that generated by a turbulence generator was determined and its effects on the heat transfer data were then studied for comparison with previous experimental work. The thin-film heat flux gages were calibrated and their calibration constants were then used to determine …
Effects Of Colocation And Non-Colocation Of Sensors And Actuators On Flexible Structures, W. C. Lee
Effects Of Colocation And Non-Colocation Of Sensors And Actuators On Flexible Structures, W. C. Lee
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis compares the performance and robustness of colocated and non-colocated sensor/actuator pairs. Linear quadratic Gaussian and loop transfer recovery (LOG/LTR) procedures are used to design optimum controllers for three example problems. The first example is a single motion degree-of-freedom system having motion only about one axis. This type of system does not have any right half plane zeros for the non-colocated case; however, the thesis shows it behaves as a non minimum phase system. The second example is a Bernoulli-Euler beam which does not have RHP zeros. An optimum LOG/LTR controller can not improve the robustness of non minimum …
Sensitivity Analysis For The Selection Of Linear Quadratic Regulator Weighing Parameters Q And R For Active Vibration Suppression Of A Cantilevered Beam, Steven L. Story
Sensitivity Analysis For The Selection Of Linear Quadratic Regulator Weighing Parameters Q And R For Active Vibration Suppression Of A Cantilevered Beam, Steven L. Story
Theses and Dissertations
There has been much interest during the past decade to develop and launch large space structures. The high cost of launching material into orbit will require that these structures be assembled in space using light weight elements which are vulnerable to dynamic excitations. Active control may be necessary to rapidly attenuate large amplitude vibrations. The active vibration control system is usually designed after the structure has been optimized. The integrated design of the control system and the structure may provide additional weight savings. This thesis presents a sensitivity analysis of the structure/ control optimization problem. The structure used is an …
A Navigation Reference System (Nrs) Using Global Positioning System (Gps) Aiding, Richard D. Stacey
A Navigation Reference System (Nrs) Using Global Positioning System (Gps) Aiding, Richard D. Stacey
Theses and Dissertations
To quantify the performance abilities of existing or proposed navigation systems, the U.S. Air Force has for the last several years compared the performance of the system under test to the performance of a baseline navigation system known as the Completely Integrated Reference Instrumentation System (CIRIS). CIRIS obtains a highly accurate navigation solution by combining the output from three major subsystems: inertial navigation system (INS) information, barometric altitude information, and range and range-rate data from ground transponders which have been precisely surveyed. Although the navigation solution produced by CIRIS is highly accurate, it will soon be inadequate as the standard …
Development Of A Personal Computer Based Approach To Aircraft Parameter Identification, Mark S. Erickson
Development Of A Personal Computer Based Approach To Aircraft Parameter Identification, Mark S. Erickson
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis develops and tests a personal computer based approach to the aircraft parameter identification problem. The approach was tested analytically at the Air Force Institute of Technology, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. These tests were conducted using simplified short period approximation and second-order transfer function models of longitudinal aircraft response. Initial evaluations were accomplished using simulated, noise free data. The longitudinal aircraft model was modified prior to flight test, for both convenience and necessity. This more complex model was evaluated during a flight test program at the USAFTPS, Edwards AFB, California. A T-38A aircraft was used as a tool to demonstrate …
Agility: Presentation And Flight Test Methods For The Operational Fighter Pilot, William R. Langdon
Agility: Presentation And Flight Test Methods For The Operational Fighter Pilot, William R. Langdon
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis develops both metrics and flight test techniques to measure agility. During development of both the agility metrics and the flight test techniques, previous work conducted by the agility community and the Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base was used as a lessons learned tool to insure favorable results. Both simulator and flight testing was performed to validate the flight test techniques. During simulator testing several problems with the original flight test techniques were noted. Flight testing on the pitch agility flight test technique solved most of its problems but problems found during roll testing in the …
Thermo-Mechanical Fatigue Of A Fiber Reinforced Titanium Aluminide Composite, Mark A. Bates
Thermo-Mechanical Fatigue Of A Fiber Reinforced Titanium Aluminide Composite, Mark A. Bates
Theses and Dissertations
The thermo-mechanical fatigue behavior of a specific unidirectional fiber reinforced titanium aluminide composite was investigated. Three test specimens were subjected to in-phase thermo-mechanical cycling and four to out- of-phase thermo-mechanical cycling. The applied maximum mechanical stresses ranged from 500-800 MPa. The stress ratio of 0.1 was used for all tests. The temperature range was from 150-650 C and the resulting fatigue lives were in the 58-1487 cycles range. The out-of-phase test specimens failed sooner compared to their respective in-phase counterparts. In order to find out why, the test results were analyzed using a simple micromechanics analysis and compared. The fracture …
Nonlinear Analysis Of A Spinning Symmetric Satellite In An Elliptical Orbit, Michael Ulisse
Nonlinear Analysis Of A Spinning Symmetric Satellite In An Elliptical Orbit, Michael Ulisse
Theses and Dissertations
Controlled and uncontrolled equations of motion for a spinning symmetric satellite in an elliptical orbit are analysed using Floquet theory, Poincare maps, and continuation. The equations of motion for the uncontrolled system are derived via energy methods. A simple feedback controller design and one based on Floquet theory are presented. Parameters varied in the equations of motion include the spin about the symmetry axis of the satellite, the inertia ratio of the satellite, the eccentricity of the orbit, and the controller gains. Floquet analyses determine local stability and bifurcation points. Poincare maps exhibit some interesting and complex structure in the …
Realistic Orbits About The Martian Moons, Samuel R. Bryant
Realistic Orbits About The Martian Moons, Samuel R. Bryant
Theses and Dissertations
Orbits about the Martian moons, Phobos and Deimos, previously found to be stable by the Poincare surface of section technique in a restricted three- body system, were investigated with non-zero eccentricity of the moons added to the dynamics of the planar four-body system (Mars, moon sun, artificial satellite). Although not strictly applicable to this case, the surface of section technique was used to verify whether or not the previously found stable orbits were realistic when a real world perturbation was added to the system dynamics. The surface of section technique involves the numerical integration of several orbits with the same …
A Numerical Investigation Of The Series Reversion/Inversion And Series Reversion Of Lambert's Time Function, Michael P. Ward
A Numerical Investigation Of The Series Reversion/Inversion And Series Reversion Of Lambert's Time Function, Michael P. Ward
Theses and Dissertations
An expression for the semi-major axis as a function of time may be determined by performing a series reversion and inversion of Lambert's Time Function. Since the resulting series contains a singularity, it is desirable to perform only a reversion on the original series to obtain an expression for the inverse of the semi-major axis. Using a Lagrange expansion to obtain the coefficients for this series is very computer intensive. Therefore, alternative methods are presented. Also, each series was expanded into a continued fraction which provided greater accuracy than the series using the same number of coefficients. The accuracy was …
Use Of Grasp Force Focus Positioning To Enhance The Torque Resistance Capability Of Robotic Grasps, Stephen G. Edwards
Use Of Grasp Force Focus Positioning To Enhance The Torque Resistance Capability Of Robotic Grasps, Stephen G. Edwards
Theses and Dissertations
Three-point-contact grasps are unique in that the homogeneous solution for the contact forces always produces a grasp force focus. Careful positioning of this focus point in the grasp plane can help avoid two things; slipping at the contact points, and violation of joint torque limits. The focus placement method is explored theoretically by examining two types of grasps on cylinders; 1) fingertip grasps using three independently operated fingers, and 2) single-finger power grasps with one contact point on each of three links. Constraint maps are generated for various fingertip grasps in order to show how proper placement of the grasp …

Investigation Of Direct And Indirect Optimization Algorithms For Aerospace Structures, Harry Hopkins Iii
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigated the performance of two direct and two indirect methods of structural optimization. A gradient calculator and overall design system was created with the finite element code FRAME. Three of the methods were employed using this system with the fourth being a commercial available code. The algorithms were applied to two different sized trusses using static constraints and were measured for accuracy, reliability, and efficiency. Results for the problems tested showed the Direct methods were sensitive to starting designs and their performance depended on the proper selection of internal parameters. They were also shown to have a high …
Autonomous Navigation Of A Satellite Cluster, Stephen C. Johnston
Autonomous Navigation Of A Satellite Cluster, Stephen C. Johnston
Theses and Dissertations
The relative position determination of a cluster of satellites operating in a low earth orbit is investigated. A U-D Covariance Factorization Kalman Filter is used for the on-board estimator with dynamics based on the Clohessy-Wiltshire equations. Measurements consist of range data between a single host satellite and the remaining cluster. Therefore only relative position and velocity states with respect to the host satellite can be determined. A 15 sample Monte Carlo simulation was conducted with clusters of 2, 5, and 10 satellites, respectively. Performance results consists of average error, average true error and filter covariance as a function of time.
Multi-Input Multi-Output Flight Control System Design For The Yf-16 Using Nonlinear Qft And Pilot Compensation, Russell B. Miller
Multi-Input Multi-Output Flight Control System Design For The Yf-16 Using Nonlinear Qft And Pilot Compensation, Russell B. Miller
Theses and Dissertations
Nonlinear Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT) and pilot compensation techniques are used to design a 2x2 flight control system for the YF-16 aircraft over a large range of plant uncertainty. The design is based on numerical input- output time histories generated with a FORTRAN implemented nonlinear simulation of the YF-16. The first step of the design process is the generation of a set of equivalent linear time-invariant (LTI) plant models to represent the actual nonlinear plant. It has been proven that the solution to the equivalent plant problem is guaranteed to solve the original nonlinear problem. Standard QFT techniques are then …

An Aluminum Salvage Station For The External Tank (Asset), James N. Haislip Jr., William C. Raynes Jr., David L. Van Matte, Roger E. Linscott, Michael A. Skinner
Theses and Dissertations
The external tank is currently the only non-reusable portion of the National Space Transportation System. The tank has 98% of the energy required to be placed in orbit at the point it is jettisoned. The purpose of this study is to develop techniques which would transform this throw-away item into a source of construction material at low earth orbit. A simulation is developed to verify the reduction timelines and peak power requirements for manual and automated reduction. The required tools to accomplish the tasks of initial cutting, product transport, spray on foam insulation removal, and product storage are developed. A …

Multidisciplinary Modeling And Design Of A Space Structure, Brian K. Cassiday, Lawrence L. Gatchet, John T. Tester, Stephen O. Gaines Ii, Mario N. Moya
Theses and Dissertations
A method is needed to simultaneously integrate several engineering disciplines into one complete model to determine the performance of the system as a whole during the design development. System engineering methodologies are particularly suited to this problem. These methods provide a structured approach to problem formulation and system parameter identification. Bond graphs are also well suited as bond graphs model power flow and energy relationships within subsystems, a characteristic inherent to all dynamic systems. The intent of this research was to demonstrate the use of concurrent engineering theory to systematically model a large flexible space structure involving several engineering disciplines. …
Model-Based Reasoning In The Detection Of Satellite Anomalies, Ralph W. Dries
Model-Based Reasoning In The Detection Of Satellite Anomalies, Ralph W. Dries
Theses and Dissertations
Automatic fault detection and recovery would be a mandatory requirement for a satellite where some degree of autonomy is required. This thesis reviews some AI techniques used for the detection of satellite anomalies, and concludes that the model-based reasoning paradigm is best suited for automated on-board fault detection because it can cope with situations not necessarily programmed into the knowledge base. Using the Scheme language and its SCOOPS object oriented extension, development of software is described that models the pitch control channel in the attitude and velocity control subsystem of a typical geo-stationary communications satellite. This model is used by …

An Analysis Of The Effects Of Phenytoin In Treating Motion Sickness And The Effects Of Motion Sickness On The Human Electroencephalogram, Todd M. Banducci
Theses and Dissertations
This research had two goals: to continue the ongoing research at AFIT to determine the efficacy of the anticonvulsant drug phenytoin in combating the onset and progression of motion sickness; and to note whether or not there is a discernable similarity in the brains of the test subjects to indicate a common point of origin (epicenter) and propagation pattern of the effects of motion sickness in the brain. Eight male DOD personnel were used as subjects to complete twelve trials. Four subjects completed the phenytoin verses placebo double-blind crossover experiment. These four subjects experienced a 99% mean increase in their …
