This study was an attempt to conceptualize, design, build, and test a constrained layer damping device that uses mechanical advantage for the purpose of increasing the damping of transient vibration of a five-bay planar truss. The aluminum truss was clamped to a fixed support and simulated a solar array. A conventional constrained layer treatment was designed, built, and tested to serve as a benchmark for comparison. For the conventional treatment, Plunkett and Lee's segmented constraining layer technique was used. The improved device, two three-layer sandwich beams spanning the two bays nearest the built-in end, were supported several inches away from …

A primary goal of this book--to familiarize the reader with detailed techniques used by industry in liquid-propellant rocket engine systems and component design--has engendered a set of realistic sample calculations. To promote an understanding of the interrelationship among major subsystems, principal calculations have been made for the engines of a hypothetical multistage space vehicle. These calculations and their associated designs were especially prepared for this book and are not related to existing or planned engines. This study investigated the results of removing lead ballast from the nose section of the F-15 Air Superiority fighter. The goal of the investigation was to determine if aircraft handling qualities remained acceptable with the ballast removed, and also to determine what improvements in aircraft nose pointing authority resulted. Actual F-15 weight reports were used to calculate the worst case aft center of gravity location shift due to the ballast removal. Several configurations with different center of gravity locations (based on various amounts of lead weights removed) were used for comparison to the baseline aircraft. The inherent difficulties of the conventional spacecraft design, which first considered the optimization with respect to structural variables and then with respect to control variables, have led to the concept of Controls-Structures Interactive Design. The success of the CSI design of Space structures without articulated appendages has prompted the extension of the CSI design to systems with articulated appendages. The NASA Space Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (SRMS), due to its long reach and light weight construction has significant structural flexibility. Thus any routine use of SRMS often results in large amplitude oscillations with long settling time. A passive damping technique utilizing a constrained viscoelastic layer damping treatment has been proposed to augment the active control of these oscillations in order to enhance the system stability and the end effector positional accuracy. An experimental investigation of flow boiling in a curved channel has been performed to ascertain its value in electronics cooling applications. Results have been obtained for flow velocities of 1 to 5 m/s and subcooling of 0.5 to 40 K. These results were compared to those of straight channel under identical velocity and subcooling conditions. The critical heat flux of the curved channel was found to be greater than that of the straight channel. In some cases the increase was found to be marginal, however. An unexplained temperature shift in the nucleate boiling regime was experienced during some experiments. Because …

The relationship between the size of the United States Air Force Space Command's lost satellite lists and thirteen other variables is investigated. The thirteen variables contain the Space Surveillance Center crew's effort to work the lost list, solar activity, geomagnetic field strength, and the number of observations received each day from seven space track sensors. To identify the relationship of cause and effect between the lost lists and the thirteen variables, simple and multiple linear regressions are used on a data set that begins on 1 January 1988 and ends on 31 December 1988. This thesis investigates the feasibility of applying influence diagrams to capture expert knowledge and incorporate decision theory to construct a Soviet satellite mission prediction model. Before a Soviet launch occurs, formulations of the model's prior probability distribution allows the input of expert knowledge and any available information. As the predictive variables of the model become known, the information is used to successively refine the estimate of the probable mission, thereby, reducing the uncertainty in the model. Two suspension systems which effectively simulate a gravity-free environment are presented. A single degree-of-freedom suspension system utilizing a specially profiled band mechanism in conjunction with a torsional spring is presented to show its feasibility and applicability for use as a ground-based testing device for flexible space structures. The second device, a two degree-of-freedom suspension system consisting of two springs and a folding linkage is presented to show the feasibility as a testing device for suspending space structures on earth.

Redesigned field joint protection system installations were performed between 7 and 15 Nov 1989 at the Thiokol Corporation Static Test Bay T-18. The purpose of the installations was to develop procedures for two field joint protection system redesign concepts (Concepts 1 and 3), and to evaluate the processing capability of each concept. The Concept 1 (Double Cork Band Design) configuration consists of two cork bands with K5NA ablation compound applied between them and to the bottom edge of the aft cork band. The planar liberational dynamics of an arbitrary spacecraft with deployable hinged appendages is presented here both analytically and numerically. The system model consists of a central rigid satellite moving about the earth in a circular orbit at a uniform orbital rate. Attached to the satellite are two unfolding rigid booms with specified mass and length. Tip masses are included at the ends of each boom and deployment is driven by torsional springs at both frictionless hinge points. The equations of motion are developed for both a single- and double-appendage model through the use of Lagrange's equations. The formulation accounts for …

On-orbit spacecraft servicing for military programs is examined. The military community appears to be somewhat reticent to embrace or, in some cases, to even consider on-orbit servicing. The civilian community appears enthusiastic about the potential of on-orbit servicing and the majority of economic studies of civilian missions show servicing strategies to be an attractive alternative to most expendable spacecraft strategies. A model called SATSERV is presented. This model can be used to conduct economic comparisons from an overall standpoint between expendable and servicing strategies. The model is implemented in a microcomputer spreadsheet format for rapid implementation and application along with …

A finite element approach for efficient thermal-structural analysis of structures with thermal protection systems (TPS) is described. The approach is applied to Space Shuttle wing structure configurations subjected to reentry heating. New two and three-dimensional finite elements are developed to model heat transfer in the TPS and supporting structure. A typical TPS/Structural element predicts transient nonlinear temperature variations through the TPS thickness and detailed structural temperatures at the TPS/Structure interface. The accuracy of the TPS/Structure approach in two and three-dimensions is evaluated by comparisons with the conventional approach for various configurations of the wing structure. An approach is developed for non-catastrophic control component failure accommodation for large space structures. Reliability is considered for both the control configuration (i.e., selecting actuator locations over an admissible set) and the ultimate operation of the system. The approach presented is to construct a measure of performance that indicates the absolute goal of the system, and for a given structural design, to determine the lowest achievable cost conditional upon the failure states of the system (i.e., which actuators are operational). These costs are then weighted and summed to provide an overall system performance measure. This expected performance measure is then …
