Design, Fabrication, And Testing Of An Emr Based Orbital Debris Impact Testing Platform, Jeffrey J. Maniglia Jr. Jun 2013

Design, Fabrication, And Testing Of An Emr Based Orbital Debris Impact Testing Platform, Jeffrey J. Maniglia Jr.

Master's Theses

This paper describes the changes made from Cal Poly’s initial railgun system, the Mk. 1 railgun, to the Mk. 1.1 system, as well as the design, fabrication, and testing of a newer and larger Mk. 2 railgun system. The Mk. 1.1 system is developed as a more efficient alteration of the original Mk. 1 system, but is found to be defective due to hardware deficiencies and failure, as well as unforeseen efficiency losses. A Mk. 2 system is developed and built around donated hardware from the Naval Postgraduate School. The Mk. 2 system strove to implement an efficient, augmented, electromagnetic …

Ad-Hoc Regional Coverage Constellations Of Cubesats Using Secondary Launches, Guy G. Zohar Mar 2013

Ad-Hoc Regional Coverage Constellations Of Cubesats Using Secondary Launches, Guy G. Zohar

Master's Theses

As development of CubeSat based architectures increase, methods of deploying constellations of CubeSats are required to increase functionality of future systems. Given their low cost and quickly increasing launch opportunities, large numbers of CubeSats can easily be developed and deployed in orbit. However, as secondary payloads, CubeSats are severely limited in their options for deployment into appropriate constellation geometries.

This thesis examines the current methods for deploying cubes and proposes new and efficient geometries using secondary launch opportunities. Due to the current deployment hardware architecture, only the use of different launch opportunities, deployment direction, and deployment timing for individual cubes …

Projectile Fire-Control Algorithm In A Spatially Varying Wind Field, Lakmal Kaviratna, Mark Costello, Nathan Slegers Jan 2013

Projectile Fire-Control Algorithm In A Spatially Varying Wind Field, Lakmal Kaviratna, Mark Costello, Nathan Slegers

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

The fire-control solution is an important element of any modern weapon system, providing precise aiming of the gun to enable highly accurate projectile impact. To be practical, the fire-control solution must be computed rapidly and reliably while simultaneously including all pertinent physical effects that can alter the trajectory and impact point. Current fire-control solutions account for the effect of atmospheric wind in a rudimentary manner, typically assuming a constant crosswind that is estimated in the field or measured at the firing site. With the advent of advanced wind-measurement systems (light detection and ranging, for example), it is now possible to …

Indeterminate Masses, Elements And Models In Information Fusion, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2013

Indeterminate Masses, Elements And Models In Information Fusion, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper at the beginning, we make a short history of the logics, from the classical Boolean logic to the most general logic of today neutrosophic logic. We define the general logic space and give the definition of the neutrosophic logic. Then we introduce the indeterminate models in information fusion, which are due either to the existence of some indeterminate elements in the fusion space or to some indeterminate masses.

The best approach for dealing with such models is the neutrosophic logic, which is part of neutrosophy. Neutrosophic logic is connected with neutrosophic set and neutrosophic probability and statistics.

Solar Energy Collection Analysis Tool For Conceptual Aircraft Design, Grant Glazebrook Dec 2012

Solar Energy Collection Analysis Tool For Conceptual Aircraft Design, Grant Glazebrook

Aerospace Engineering

As battery energy storage and solar cell technology improve, solar aircraft are increasingly being considered for High Altitude Long Endurance missions. Although solar vehicles may theoretically remain on-station indefinitely using the sun as a power source, their design and feasibility is sensitive to mission planning details as specific as the time history of the vehicle’s deck orientation relative to the sun; the energy available for capture by the on-board solar array is governed by the solar incidence angle, and at certain orientations, the vehicle may cast shadows on itself and further reduce its energy capture capabilities. To quantify these losses, …
