Research for this thesis centered on the Lambda Unmanned Research Vehicle (URV), an asset of the Flight Dynamics Directorate, Wright Laboratory Patterson AFB. The following tasks were accomplished: (1) a linear, state-space, small perturbation model was developed for both the longitudinal and lateral directional dynamics of the vehicles, and (2) pitch rate roll rate, and yaw rate flight controllers were designed using classical and multivariable feedback methods. The parameters of the linear, state space, small perturbation model were estimated from actual flight test data. Digital Datcom was first used to estimate stability and control derivatives from the vehicle's geometry. Maximum …

This thesis develops a simulation that emulates a Litton LN-94 INS. Real time simulation is achieved for a stationary navigation case and a straight-and-level flight trajectory are provided to exercise the simulation dynamics. The user interface is simple and requires little previous knowledge to operate. The communication link with the MILSTD 1553B bus provide a realistic environment in which to collect and analyze data. The simulation is processed on an 80386 IBM compatible personal computer. A 23-state INS error model is implemented and integration is performed by a fifth-order Kutta-Merson routine. To quantify the performance abilities of existing or proposed navigation systems, the U.S. Air Force has for the last several years compared the performance of the system under test to the performance of a baseline navigation system known as the Completely Integrated Reference Instrumentation System (CIRIS). CIRIS obtains a highly accurate navigation solution by combining the output from three major subsystems: inertial navigation system (INS) information, barometric altitude information, and range and range-rate data from ground transponders which have been precisely surveyed. Many modern control design methods, such as H2 and H optimization, guarantee that the closed-loop system will be stable. To make further use of this guarantee, the portion of the s-plane considered to be stable is restricted to a region left of a vertical line some distance alpha from the imaginary axis. This work follows Capt. R.L. Riddle's 1989 thesis (ADA216147) which compared conventional, H2 and H controlled guided missiles in simulated flyouts against an airborne target. The simulation results did not clearly demonstrate the H2 and H controller advantages. In this study the missile model and simulation were refined. In addition to simulation runs, performance, noise attenuation, and μ (structural singular value) robustness analyses were conducted. An investigation was performed to analyze the dynamic stability characteristic of an aircraft which has sustained damage to a primary control surface. The analysis was performed using the existing functional form of actual wind tunnel data taken on an F-16 model. Two control schemes are used for trimming an F-16 that has sustained damage to its rudder. The first control scheme represent the basic aircraft, while the second allowed the horizontal tail ailerons to move independently from the flaperons. Two suspension systems which effectively simulate a gravity-free environment are presented. A single degree-of-freedom suspension system utilizing a specially profiled band mechanism in conjunction with a torsional spring is presented to show its feasibility and applicability for use as a ground-based testing device for flexible space structures. The second device, a two degree-of-freedom suspension system consisting of two springs and a folding linkage is presented to show the feasibility as a testing device for suspending space structures on earth.

An approach is developed for non-catastrophic control component failure accommodation for large space structures. Reliability is considered for both the control configuration (i.e., selecting actuator locations over an admissible set) and the ultimate operation of the system. The approach presented is to construct a measure of performance that indicates the absolute goal of the system, and for a given structural design, to determine the lowest achievable cost conditional upon the failure states of the system (i.e., which actuators are operational). These costs are then weighted and summed to provide an overall system performance measure. This expected performance measure is then …

A synthesis procedure, based upon optimal regulator theory and eigenvalue/eigenvector assignment technique, was used in the design of a low-speed lateral control system for the SCAT-15F supersonic transport. Emphasis was placed on reducing the lateral acceleration at the pilot's station. Control laws were designed to make the aircraft handling characteristics acceptable with the exception of the lateral acceleration. It was found that a compromise between the roll performance requirements and the peak lateral acceleration requirement is needed for a successful SCAT-15F design.
