Invariant-Based Method For Improving Efficiency Of Mechanical Testing In Aerospace Certification Of Carbon Fiber-Epoxy Composites, Alyssa Rina Gruezo, Erika Gabrielle Hansen
Invariant-Based Method For Improving Efficiency Of Mechanical Testing In Aerospace Certification Of Carbon Fiber-Epoxy Composites, Alyssa Rina Gruezo, Erika Gabrielle Hansen
Materials Engineering
The current challenge with qualification of carbon fiber composites in the aerospace industry would be the low efficiency of testing hundreds of samples. The Trace Theory strives to streamline the qualification process by utilizing a material’s Trace to predict properties of composites using Excel programs and basis data. To test this theory, predicted properties from the program, QuickLam, were compared to experimental data. Unidirectional 0° (T1), unidirectional 90° (T2), quasi-isotropic (T3), and hard quasi-isotropic (T4) laminates were made using HexTowR carbon fiber and TC250 resin provided by TenCate Advanced Composites. Tensile and compression tests were done according to ASTM D3039 …
Speculations On A City For Mars, Edouard Terzis
Speculations On A City For Mars, Edouard Terzis
School of Architecture - Theses
This thesis proposes the reinterpretation of architectural forms as the index of the constitution of the idea of the city. “Speculations on a City on Mars” is paradoxical in a sense as it superposes both the managerial representation of a city, that is Zoning, along with the speculative aspect of an extra-terrestrial city.

Study Of Knowledge-Based System (Kbs) And Decision Making Methodologies In Materials Selection For Lightweight Aircraft Metallic Structures, Pashupati R. Adhikari, Reza Mirshams
Journal of Applied Science & Engineering Technology
This paper presents an overview of knowledge-based system (KBS) in the context of decision making methodologies used in materials selection for the design of light weight aircraft metallic structures. Overall aircraft weight reduction means substantially less fuel consumption and better efficiency. Part of the solution to this problem is to find a way to reduce overall weight of metallic structures in the aircraft. Two distinct multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) methodologies are presented with examples featuring a set of short-listed materials suitable in the design of the structures. Pre-defined constraint values, mainly mechanical properties, are employed as relevant attributes satisfying …

Tracking Characteristics Of Tracer Particles For Piv Measurements In Supersonic Flows, Fang Chen, Hong Liu, Zifeng Yang, Hui Hu
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
The tracking characteristics of tracer particles for particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements in supersonic flows were investigated. The experimental tests were conducted at Mach number 4 in Multi-Mach Wind Tunnel (MMWT) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The motion of tracer particles carried by the supersonic flow across shockwaves was theoretically modelled, and then their aerodynamic characteristics with compressibility and rarefaction effects were evaluated. According to the proposed selection criterion of tracer particles, the PIV measured results clearly identified that the shockwave amplitude is in good agreement with theory and Schlieren visualizations. For the tracer particles in nanoscales, their effective aerodynamic …

Analysis Of Additively Manufactured Lattice Structures Using Finite Element Methods, Christopher A. Box
Theses and Dissertations
Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes are well known for their ability to fabricate parts with complex geometries. Lattice structures leverage this ability to create parts with high strength-to-weight ratio and other desirable structural qualities. This research presents a parameterized modeling tool using common Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and scripting software with which aggregated lattice structures can be analyzed, given different geometric properties and loading conditions. A full factorial Design of Experiments is run to explore the effects of various parameters on the strength of lattice structures. Experimental compressive strength results from three FDM-produced PLA lattices are discussed and compared to predictions …
The Effect Of Biocomposite Material In A Composite Structure Under Compression Loading, Benjamin Andrew Sweeney
The Effect Of Biocomposite Material In A Composite Structure Under Compression Loading, Benjamin Andrew Sweeney
Master's Theses
While composite structures exhibit exceptional strength and weight saving possibilities for engineering applications, sometimes their overall cost and/or material performance can limit their usage when compared to conventional structural materials. Meanwhile ‘biocomposites’, composite structures consisting of natural fibers (i.e. bamboo fibers), display higher cost efficiency and unique structural benefits such as ‘sustainability’. This analysis will determine if the integration of these two different types of composites are beneficial to the overall structure. Specifically, the structure will consist of a one internal bamboo veneer biocomposite ply; and two external carbon fiber weave composite plies surrounding the bamboo biocomposite. To acquire results …

A Multiscale Model For Damage Progression And Detection In Piezo/Pyroelectric Composite Laminates, Yehia Bahei-El-Din, Amany Micheal
Centre for Advanced Materials
Assessment of damage initiation and progression in composite structures reinforced with electrically active filaments is modelled in a multiscale analysis. The analysis developed is a two-tier, interactive analysis, which involves two length scales; macroscopic, and microscopic. The proposed multiscale analysis provides seamless integration of the mechanics at the two length scales, including piezoelectric and pyroelectric coupling effects and damage under overall thermomechanical loads and an electric field applied to electroactive fibers. The macromechanical analysis is performed for multidirectional, fibrous laminates using the lamination theory, including bending, and the micromechanical analysis is performed using a two-phase model and a periodic array …

Detecting Laminate Damage Using Embedded Electrically Active Plies – An Analytical Approach, Amany Micheal, Yehia Bahei-El-Din
Centre for Advanced Materials
Assessment of damage initiation and progression in composite laminates with embedded electrically active plies is modeled. Utilizing electrically active layers embedded in composite laminates as damage sensors is proposed by several researchers and is mainly assessed experimentally. Sensing damage using embedded electrically active plies is generally preferred over the use of surface mounted PZT wafers since the range of the latter is limited to a very narrow area underneath the surface, while multiple damage mechanisms can generally be found in several plies of the laminate. The solution presented invokes two levels of analysis. Firstly, on the laminate level, applied membrane …

This year marks the 55th anniversary of the first fluid physics experiment performed aboard a spacecraft during the Mercury-Atlas 7 mission. Since then, NASA has conducted over 80 fluids physics experiments aboard a variety of spacecraft, many of which have enhanced the understanding of large-length-scale capillary phenomena relevant to liquid management in the weightless state. As both celebration and demonstration, the Mercury-Atlas 7 fluids experiment is revisited in light of the current understanding of large-length-scale capillary fluidics. Employing a modern numerical tool, a rich variety of experimental outcomes are discovered that were not observed during the flight experiment. Interestingly, experimental …
Mechanism Of Shot Peening Enhancement For The Fatigue Performance Of Aa7050-T7451, Daniel James Chadwick
Mechanism Of Shot Peening Enhancement For The Fatigue Performance Of Aa7050-T7451, Daniel James Chadwick
Open Access Theses
Shot peening is a dynamic cold working process involving the impingement of peening media onto a substrate surface. Shot peening is commonly employed as a surface treatment technique within the aerospace industry during manufacturing, in order to improve fatigue performance of structural components. The compressive residual stress induced during shot peening is understood to result in fatigue crack growth retardation, improving the performance of shot peened components. However, shot peening is a compromise between the benefit of inducing a compressive residual stress and causing detrimental surface damage. Due to the relatively soft nature of AA7050-T7451, shot peening can result in …

Nanostructured Morphologies In Glassy Polymer Networks, Brian Greenhoe
Dissertations
The body of this work describes a novel approach for the dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes in a high Tg epoxy prepolymer matrix using a twin screw high-shear continuous reactor. The method demonstrated improves on previous dispersion methods in several ways. It offers increased efficiency through excellent heat transfer, while being solvent-less, scale-able, and tailorable to drive dispersion states to judiciously chosen dispersion states. Furthermore, it was shown that dispersion state and agglomerate morphology can be directed, in several ways, through processing conditions and also by controlling the matrix viscosity profile through cure. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy, optical hot-stage microscopy, …

Evaluation Of Efficiency Of Various Materials To Shield From Radiation In Space Using The Monte Carlo Transport Code Called Fluka, Roman Savinov
Master's Theses
The purpose of this study is to improve spacecraft shielding from radiation in space. It focuses on the evaluation of shielding efficiency of different materials. The efficiency of a shield is evaluated by the dose profile within the shield and the amount of dose absorbed by a target using the Monte Carlo transport code called FLUKA. The output of this code is validated by recreating the experiments from published papers and comparing the results. Once the FLUKA’s output is validated, the efficiency of sixteen materials, subject to SPE and GCR sources, are evaluated. The efficiency comparison is made by fixing …

Finite Element Simulation Of Pzt-Aided Interrogation Of Composite Laminates Exhibiting Damage, Amany Micheal, Yehia Bahei-El-Din
Centre for Advanced Materials
Piezoelectricity has proved effective in capturing changes in structures caused by various damage mechanisms. In one approach, piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) are mounted on the surface of the host structure and utilized as both actuators and sensors to interrogate the structure and monitor its health. This is achieved by subjecting the PWAS to a transient electric pulse and reading the resulting voltage. Changes in the stiffness of the substrate due to structural damage affect the response of the PWAS, which could be correlated to integrity of the structure. Applying this technique to fibrous composite laminates encounters particular challenges due …

In doing so, comprehensive flight tests need to be carried out. In this study, a four-wing flapping MAV is built and a multi-discipline approach is used to design the MAV model. Precision manufacturing technology is introduced here. The finished micro air vehicle has a weight of 8 g and is tested for flight by remote control. The micro air vehicle can perform both hovering and forward flight with high maneuverability. …
Evaluation Of Strain Distortion Correction Protocol Using Scanning Electron Microscopy And Digital Image Correlation, Alexandra Mallory, Alberto Mello, Michael Sangid
Evaluation Of Strain Distortion Correction Protocol Using Scanning Electron Microscopy And Digital Image Correlation, Alexandra Mallory, Alberto Mello, Michael Sangid
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Scanning electron microscopy in combination with digital image correlation (SEM-DIC) is a useful technique for measuring strain in materials at the micro-scale. In particular, it can be used to identify micro-scale strain localizations that are the precursor to material failure. While SEM produces high resolution images of the microstructure, the images also contain a large amount of distortion that, during DIC, will result in distorted strain values that require correction. In this project, a nickel-based alloy underwent cyclic mechanical fatigue at three different high temperatures to a targeted maximum strain. Scanning electron microscopy imaging was done on a 200x150μm area …
Metamodels Of Residual Stress Buildup For Machining Process Modeling, Stuart B. Mccrorie, Michael Sangid
Metamodels Of Residual Stress Buildup For Machining Process Modeling, Stuart B. Mccrorie, Michael Sangid
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
In the process of machining materials, stresses, called residual stresses, accumulate in the workpiece being machined that remain after the process is completed. These residual stresses can affect the properties of the material or cause part distortion, and it is important that they be calculated to prevent complications from arising due to the residual stresses. However, these calculations can be incredibly computationally intensive, and thus other methods are needed to predict the residual stresses in materials for quick decision-making during machining. By using metamodels - a method of representing data where few data points exist - we can achieve an …

High Strain Rate Experiments Of Energetic Material Binder, Roberto Rangel Mendoza, Michael Harr, Weinong Chen
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Energetic materials, in particular HMX, is widely used in many applications as polymer bonded explosives (PBX) and rocket propellant. However, when damaged, HMX is known to be an unstable substance which renders it a hazardous material and in some cases unreliable. Finding critical mechanical conditions at high rates that render various forms of energetic materials as unreliable would be vital to understand the effects that vibrations and compression forces have on energetic materials. A better understanding would enable the ability to develop improvements in the manufacturing of PBX and rocker propellant. The method utilized to evaluate the mechanical properties of …

Detecting Delamination In Carbon Fiber Composites Using Piezoresistive Nanocomposites, Sandeep Chava
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Carbon fiber prepreg composites are utilized successfully as structural materials for different lightweight aerospace applications. Delamination is a critical failure mode in these composite materials. As composite plies separate from each other, the composite loses some of its ability for supporting expected loads. Therefore, detection of delamination at right time is a foremost significance. This study presents a new way for detecting delamination in composite plates using piezoresistive nanocomposites. This new procedure is setup and studied through both experimental and computational investigations. In this research, nanocomposites with 5% coarse graphene platelets are fabricated for detecting delamination. 8-ply carbon fiber prepreg …

A Comparison Of Microstructure And Uniaxial Compressive Response Of Ice-Templated Porous Alumina Scaffolds Fabricated From Two Different Particle Sizes, Nikhil D. Dhavale
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Development of bio-inspired highly porous (>50 vol.%) cellular ceramics is crucial to meet the demand of high-performance lightweight and damage-tolerant materials for a number of cutting-edge applications including impact energy absorption, biomedical implants, and energy storage. A key design feature that is observed in many natural materials (e.g., nacre, bamboo, wood, etc.) is the presence of hierarchical microstructure that results in an excellent synergy of various material properties, which are otherwise considered as mutually exclusive in current paradigm of materials design. To this end, development of multilayered, interconnected and anisotropic cellular ceramics could benefit the aforementioned applications. However, mimicking …
Predicting Flexural Strength Of Composite Honeycomb Core Sandwich Panels Using Mechanical Models Of Face Sheet Compressive Strength, Nicholas Bruffey, William Shiu
Predicting Flexural Strength Of Composite Honeycomb Core Sandwich Panels Using Mechanical Models Of Face Sheet Compressive Strength, Nicholas Bruffey, William Shiu
Materials Engineering
The design process at Zodiac Aerospace requires the ability to accurately predict the strength of a composite honeycomb core sandwich panel to adhere to strict FAA regulations. The most common failure mode in long beam composites is in compression. Following ASTM D7249 for a four-point bend test of a long beam flexural test, a mechanical model has been developed that relates the compressive strength of glass fiber face sheets to the flexural strength of the sandwich panel. Zodiac does not currently have data on the compressive strength of the face sheets, so testing was performed to find this property. Asymmetric …

Controlling Grain Size In Cold Worked And Annealed 1100 Aluminum To Optimize Ductility In Rocket Diaphragm Systems, Ryan Lewis, Bryce Simmons, Jessica Williams
Materials Engineering
Liquid propellant rocket diaphragms require extreme ductility. 1100 Aluminum is used for its high ductility, but the post-processing cold work and subsequent anneal result in excessively large grains. The effect of heat treatment and cold work on grain size in 1100 aluminum was explored. The samples were cold worked to 0, 5, 10, 15 and 30% using tensile elongation. The samples were then heat treated per AMS 2770 with either a "Steel Conduction" (1000 – 1150°F/min) or a "Production" (16 – 18°F/min) heating rate. The grain size of the samples were measured using the mean lineal intercept method. The grain …

Creep Of Hi-Nicalon™ S Ceramic Fiber Tows At 700°C In Air And In Silicic Acid-Saturated Steam, Matthew W. Piper
Theses and Dissertations
Aircraft structural and engine components are subjected to elevated temperature and steam environments during operation. Turbine blades experience particularly harsh conditions that are approaching the operating temperature limits of current Nickel-based superalloys even with active cooling. Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs), which demonstrate high specific strength and specific stiffness and maintain these properties at elevated temperatures such that active cooling is not required, are prime candidates to replace superalloys as the materials for turbine blades. Ceramic matrix composites are composite materials that consist of a ceramic matrix with fiber reinforcement. This research investigated a silicon carbide (SiC) fiber, Hi-Nicalon™ S, which …

Characterization Of Dispersion And Residual Stress In Nanoparticle Reinforced Hybrid Carbon Fiber Composites, Alex Selimov
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Hybrid carbon fiber reinforced composites are a new breed of materials that are currently being explored and characterized for next generation aerospace applications. Through the introduction of secondary reinforcements, such as alumina nanoparticles, hybrid properties including improved mechanical properties and stress sensing capabilities can be achieved. In order to maximize these properties, it is necessary to achieve a homogeneous dispersion of particulate filler. Utilizing the photoluminescent properties of alumina, it is possible to compare local levels of particle concentration through emission intensities as a way to determine the effectiveness of the tested manufacturing parameters in increasing material homogeneity. Parameters of …

Cryogenic Processing Of Al 7050-T7451 Alloy For Improved Surface Integrity, Bo Huang
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Al 7050-T7451 alloy with good combinations of strength, stress corrosion cracking resistance and toughness, is used broadly in the aerospace/aviation industry for fatigue-critical airframe structural components. However, it is also considered as a highly anisotropic alloy as the crack growth behavior along the short transverse direction is very different from the one in the long transverse direction, due to the inhomogeneous microstructure with the elongated grains distributed in the work material used in the sheet/plate applications. Further processes on these materials are needed to improve its mechanical and material properties and broaden its applications.
The material with ultra-fine or nano …

Polyacrylonitrile Copolymers: Effects Of Molecular Weight, Polydispersity, Composition, And Sequencing On Thermal Ring-Closing Stabilization, Jeremy D. Moskowitz
Dissertations
Controlled polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fiber precursors with defined molecular weights, polydispersities, compositions, and architectures have been prepared for their study on thermal ring-closing stabilization behavior. PAN and its copolymers of number average molecular weights exceeding 170,000 g/mol were successfully synthesized via low temperature reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. RAFT polymerizations of PAN-based precursors were compared to conventional free radical solution polymerizations with a focus on the effects of molecular weight and polydispersity on structural evolution and cyclization efficiency. When RAFT polymerization was extended to copolymers, it was found that RAFT copolymers achieved greater cyclization intensities and improved thermal stability …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Room Temperature Vulcanized (RTV) silicone and compounds are widely used in outer-space for bonding or potting spacecraft components. In geosynchronous equatorial orbit (GEO), the silicone may outgas species which can condense on optically sensitive surfaces and degrade their performance, therefore shortening the lifetime of spacecraft. In low-earth-orbit (LEO), the silicone rubber is subject to an energetic and corrosive environment. Atomic oxygen (AO) and ultraviolet radiation can cause abrasion and degradation of the silicone rubber, cause changes in existing condensed VCM films and affect the properties of VCM films condensing in this atmosphere. Experiments were performed to simulate GEO conditions. In …

Dynamic Triaxial Compression Experiments On Borosilicate And Soda-Lime Glass, John T. Chojnacki
Open Access Theses
A series of compression experiments were performed on borosilicate and soda-lime glass using a triaxial compression Kolsky bar. The triaxial compression Kolsky bar differs from a traditional Kolsky bar by having two pressure chambers, one enclosing the specimen and the other enclosing the end of the transmission bar, so that a specimen may be pre-stressed axially and radially before a dynamic axial load is applied. The result is a modified Kolsky bar capable of measuring axial deformation and axial stresses of a specimen at various strain rates under a range of confinement pressures. Borosilicate glass was subjected to triaxial confinement …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the ductility and application of titanium alloys, like titanium 6Al-4V, when used in aerospace fasteners compared to more conventional stainless steel aerospace fasteners such as A286. There have been concerns raised about the safe usability of titanium 6-4 in the aerospace industry due to its lack of strain hardening. However, there is a lack of data pertaining to this concern of safe usage which this thesis aims to address. Tensile tests were conducted to find the ductility indexes of these fasteners which quantify the amount of plastic to elastic elongation. From …
