Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) systems have significant impact in defense applications. There is a continuing need to develop new and robust techniques to handle the increasingly complex ATR problem. The objectives of this thesis are two-fold. First a new technique to be used for ATR is developed and secondly an integrated ATR system to investigate and combine all subsystems is developed. In this thesis, we have developed a new technique for the feature extraction stage of ATR problem using wavelet transforms. This thesis designed, constructed, and tested a robotic arm for the Aerobot Aerial Robot. The main purpose of the ARM is to enable the Aerobot to retrieve objects for use in an annual robotics competition. Design of the ARM involved synthesizing the characteristics of simplicity, weight, strength, and size. The result was a three-degree-of-freedom manipulator that uses electric motors, cable linkages, and telescoping tubes to access a work space below the Aerobot. Forward and inverse kinematics were investigated to enable automation of the ARM. Data was collected from infrared sensors to validate the model. Manipulation of the ARM is presently …

A Numerical Study Of High-Speed Missile Configurations Using A Block- Structured Parallel Algorithm, Douglas C. Blake

A numerical analysis of the aerodynamic phenomena associated with the high-speed flight of a sharp-nosed, four-finned, high-fineness ratio missile using a block-structured, parallel computer algorithm is presented. The algorithm, PANS-3EM, utilizes a second-order-accurate, shock-capturing, Total Variation Diminishing scheme and incorporates a Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model. PANS-3EM allows for extreme flexibility in the choice of computational domain decomposition and computing machine of implementation. Developmental work consists of conceptualization and verification of the algorithm as well as parallel performance and scalability studies conducted on a variety of computing platforms. The main objectives of our research are to present a self-contained overview of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic, develop a methodology for control system design using fuzzy logic controllers, and to design and implement a fuzzy logic controller for a real system. We first present the fundamental concepts of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic. Fuzzy sets and basic fuzzy operations are defined. In addition, for control systems, it is important to understand the concepts of linguistic values, term sets, fuzzy rule base, inference methods, and defuzzification methods. Analysts tasked to study satellites moving in space must often rely on photographs to conduct their analysis. Often these photographs do not adequately represent how satellites move in space, their spatial relationships, or their interaction with other satellites. What analysts need is a three- dimensional synthetic environment that depicts satellites as they actually move and interact in space. This thesis addresses the early development of the Satellite Modeler (SM), a system that allows analysts to study, satellite motion and maneuvering of computer aided design (CAD) models of those satellites in a three-dimensional orbit. This paper develops a formal definition of the Object-Oriented paradigm for requirements analysis. The literature was surveyed for both formal and informal methods for conducting an Object-Oriented Requirements Analysis (OORA). The informal methods reviewed are: Bailin's, Shlaer and Mellor's, Booch's, and Coad and Yourdon's. The formal methods reviewed are: Bralick's, Z, and REFINE. None of the methods were found to be adequate for doing an OORA. A formal definition of an OORA, based on the concept of classes, is developed. Computer programs were developed to visualize irrotational flow over bluff bodies (circular cylinders and half-bodies) and streamlined bodies (elliptical cylinders and airfoils). The method of superposition of flows was used, with stream functions or complex velocity potentials for fundamental flows being added to obtain the flows over the bodies. For the flow over the circular cylinders, half-bodies and elliptical cylinders, the stream function was calculated directly. The flow over the airfoil was obtained by Joukowski mapping of the imaginary part of the complex velocity potential for flow over a circular cylinder.

A computer graphics program is developed for displaying water molecule configurations on the screen of a DN3500 Apollo workstation. The motivation was to generate a fast display of output from molecular dynamics or Monte Carlo computer simulations. Input to the program consists of a listing of the Cartesian coordinates of the atomic constituents of the molecules. Options in the program include: 1) number of molecules; 2) plot size; 3) atomic radii; 4) superposition of substrate atomic positions; 5) viewing angle; and 6) color-coded and/or numbered atoms. The program is written in Fortran.

A graph theoretic approach is applied to the conceptual design of deployable truss structures. The characteristics that relate to the inter-connectivity of the elements of a deployable truss structure can be captured in a schematic representation, called a graph. A procedure is presented that enables the exhaustive generation of these graphs for structures of any given number of nodes and links and which are foldable onto a plane or onto a line.

Three-point-contact grasps are unique in that the homogeneous solution for the contact forces always produces a grasp force focus. Careful positioning of this focus point in the grasp plane can help avoid two things; slipping at the contact points, and violation of joint torque limits. The focus placement method is explored theoretically by examining two types of grasps on cylinders; 1) fingertip grasps using three independently operated fingers, and 2) single-finger power grasps with one contact point on each of three links. An algorithm based on the Marquardt-Levenberg least-square optimization method has been shown by S. Kollias and D. Anastassiou (IEEE Trans. on Circuits Syst. vol.36, no.8, p.1092-101, Aug. 1989) to be a much more efficient training method than gradient descent, when applied to some small feedforward neural networks. Yet, for many applications, the increase in computational complexity of the method outweighs any gain in learning rate obtained over current training methods. However, the least-squares method can be more efficiently implemented on parallel architectures than standard methods. A computer program has been developed for calculation of the velocity-coupled response function of solid-propellants from experimentally measured pressure data. The proposed velocity-coupled response function measurement apparatus consists of an end-burner combustor where the propellant sample is oscillated in a direction normal to the flow in the presence of a standing acoustic wave within the combustion chamber. The pressure measurements are made at select points along the length of the chamber.
