Transient Turbine Engine Modeling With Hardware-In-The-Loop Power Extraction, Michael W. Corbett, Peter T. Lamm, Philip R. Owen, S. Danny Phillips, Mark J. Blackwelder, J. Timothy Alt, John M. Mcnichols, Michael A. Boyd, Mitch Wolff Jun 2012

Transient Turbine Engine Modeling With Hardware-In-The-Loop Power Extraction, Michael W. Corbett, Peter T. Lamm, Philip R. Owen, S. Danny Phillips, Mark J. Blackwelder, J. Timothy Alt, John M. Mcnichols, Michael A. Boyd, Mitch Wolff

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Increasingly high aircraft power demands require that the interactions between an aircraft’s electrical subsystem and the engine subsystem be considered in dynamic, systemlevel tests. Traditionally, system-level dynamics have only been captured in completely assembled aircraft systems. Component-level or subsystem-level optimization is no longer appropriate because highly interdependent dynamics between subsystems only become apparent during system-level analysis. In an effort to reduce the high cost of testing integrated power and propulsion systems in an altitude-simulating wind tunnel, alternatives such as modeling and simulation are considered. Synchronizing and coupling simulations of vastly different time scales is possible, but the resulting system simulation …

The Incorporation Of Electrohydrodynamics And Other Modifications Into A Dry Spinning Model To Develop A Theoretical Framework For Electrospinning, Yuki Imura May 2012

The Incorporation Of Electrohydrodynamics And Other Modifications Into A Dry Spinning Model To Develop A Theoretical Framework For Electrospinning, Yuki Imura

Dissertations

The objective of this research was the development of a mathematical model of the electrospinning process using dry spinning modeling principles as a basis. This model is directed at the identification of parameters which influence final fiber characteristics, e.g., solvent concentration, temperature, spin line tension, and electric field. Preliminary computer simulations were performed; however, the generated data was inconclusive and was determined to be due in part to the complexity of the modeled system and the subsequent computational difficulties encountered. Although a comprehensive computational model of the electrospinning process has not yet been demonstrated, the theoretical development that was undertaken …

Using Ground Penetrating Radar Signal Reflection To Model A Highly Transmissive Bedrock Aquifer, Daniel J. Brockmeyer Mr. May 2012

Using Ground Penetrating Radar Signal Reflection To Model A Highly Transmissive Bedrock Aquifer, Daniel J. Brockmeyer Mr.

Master's Theses

The use of numerical modeling software to characterize groundwater contaminant fate and transport requires an understanding of the distribution of hydraulic properties of the aquifer. As the complexity of this distribution increases, a more sophisticated understanding is required. Modeling contaminant transport in bedrock aquifers requires that the spatial distributions of highly conductive geologic features are characterized along with the hydraulic transmissivities of those features (Shapiro, 2003). The goal of this research is to refine the numerical model of a highly transmissive crystalline aquifer by characterizing the spatial variability of the hydraulic transmissivity using the attenuation of the ground penetrating radar …

Modeling Of A New Structure Of Precision Air Conditioning System Using Secondary Condenser For Rh Regulation, Aries Subiantoro, Nasruddin Nasruddin, Feri Yusivar, Muhammad Idrus Al-Hamid, Bagio Budiardjo

Makara Journal of Technology

A dynamic mathematical model for a new structure of precision air conditioning (PAC) has been developed. The proposed PAC uses an additional secondary condenser for relative humidity regulation compared to a basic refrigeration system. The work mechanism for this system and a vapour-compression cycle process of the system are illustrated using psychrometric chart and pressure-enthalpy diagram. A non-linear system model is derived based on the conservation of mass and energy balance principles and then linearized at steady state operating point for developing a 8th-order state space model suited for multivariable controller design. The quality of linearized model is analyzed in …

Influence Of Defects And Impurities On Solar Cell Performance, Vinay Budhraja Jan 2012

Influence Of Defects And Impurities On Solar Cell Performance, Vinay Budhraja

Dissertations

Multicrystalline silicon (mc-Si) solar cells exhibit high impurity content and higher density of crystal defects such as grain boundaries, dislocations, stacking faults and impurity precipitates. Even though the effect of dislocations on mc-Si solar cell performance has been studied, a severe lack of understanding of the quantitative effects of dislocations on cell parameters still exists. Some correlation has been reported under the assumption of a uniform distribution of dislocation density and a negligible effect of front and back surface recombination velocity. This assumption can cause a significant error as the current mc-Si technology provides good surface passivation by SiN:H and …

Canopy Radiation Transmission For An Energy Balance Snowmelt Model, Vinod Mahat, David G. Tarboton Jan 2012

Canopy Radiation Transmission For An Energy Balance Snowmelt Model, Vinod Mahat, David G. Tarboton

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

To better estimate the radiation energy within and beneath the forest canopy for energy balance snowmelt models, a two stream radiation transfer model that explicitly accounts for canopy scattering, absorption and reflection was developed. Upward and downward radiation streams represented by two differential equations using a single path assumption were solved analytically to approximate the radiation transmitted through or reflected by the canopy with multiple scattering. This approximation results in an exponential decrease of radiation intensity with canopy depth, similar to Beer's law for a deep canopy. The solution for a finite canopy is obtained by applying recursive superposition of …

Numerical Simulation Of Expansion And Charring Of Carbon-Epoxy Laminates In Fire Environments, Matthew Mcgurn, Paul Desjardin, Amanda Dodd

United States Department of Energy: Publications

A thermal model is developed for the response of carbon-epoxy composite laminates in fire environments. The model is based on a porous media description that includes the effects of gas transport within the laminate along with swelling. Model comparisons are conducted against the data from Quintiere et al. [34]. Verifications are conducted for both coupon level and intermediate scale one-sided heating tests. Comparisons of the heat release rate (HRR) and time-to-ignition as well as the final products (mass fractions, volume percentages, porosity, etc.) are conducted. Overall, the agreement between available the data and model is good considering the simplified approximations …

Worst-Case Estimation For Data-Dependent Timing Jitter And Amplitude Noise In High-Speed Differential Link, Wei Yao, Yiyu Shi, Lei He, Sudhakar Pamarti

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Differential signaling has been widely used in high-speed interconnects. Signal integrity issues, such as inter-symbol interference (ISI) and crosstalk between the differential pair, however, still cause significant timing jitter and amplitude noise and heavily limit the performance of the differential link. the pre-emphasis filter is commonly used to reduce ISI but may potentially change the crosstalk behavior. in this paper, we first propose formula-Based jitter and noise models considering the combined effect of ISI, crosstalk, and pre-emphasis filter. with the same set of input patterns, experiment shows our models achieve within 5% difference compared with SPICE simulation. by utilizing these …

Finite Element Modeling Of Seismic Wave Propagation In Earthen Embankments, Binyam Tadese Jan 2012

Finite Element Modeling Of Seismic Wave Propagation In Earthen Embankments, Binyam Tadese

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The detection of internal seepage zones in embankments (dams and levees) by geophysical seismic techniques such as seismic refraction is limited by a number of factors. Some factors are associated with inversion and smoothing problems during processing, while others are associated with the natural characteristics of embankments and seepage anomalies. In this research, changes in the seismic response associated with: embankment soil compositions and moisture, characteristics of the seepage zone, presence of water in the reservoir, and shape of embankment was studied via 2D and 3D finite element (FE) embankment models. Artificial reflections from external boundaries and numerical dispersion were …

Transport Phenomena Associated With Liquid Metal Flow Over Topographically Modified Surfaces, Wen Liu Jan 2012

Transport Phenomena Associated With Liquid Metal Flow Over Topographically Modified Surfaces, Wen Liu

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Brazing and soldering, as advanced manufacturing processes, are of significant importance to industrial applications. It is widely accepted that joining by brazing or soldering is possible if a liquid metal wets the solids to be joined. Wetting, hence spreading and capillary action of liquid metal (often called filler) is of significant importance. Good wetting is required to distribute liquid metal over/between the substrate materials for a successful bonding.

Topographically altered surfaces have been used to exploit novel wetting phenomena and associated capillary actions, such as imbibitions (a penetration of a liquid front over/through a rough, patterned surface). Modification of surface …

Coupled Electromagnetic And Heat Transfer Model For Microwave Heating In Domestic Ovens, Krishnamoorthy Pitchai, Sohan Birla, Jeyamkondan Subbiah, D. D. Jones, Harshanardhan Thippareddi

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Microwave ovens are used extensively for heating a variety of not-ready-to-eat food products. Non-uniform heating of foods in microwave ovens is a major concern in assuring microbiological safety of such products. The non-uniform heating of foods is attributed by complex interaction of microwaves with foods. To understand this complex interaction, a comprehensive model was developed to solve coupled electromagnetic and heat transfer equations using finite-difference time-domain based commercial software. The simulation parameters, cell size, heating time step, and number of iterations for steady state electromagnetic field were optimized. The model was validated by 30 s heating profile of a cylindrical …

Theory, Figures Of Merit, And Design Recipe Of The Plasmonic Structure Composed Of A Nano-Slit Aperture Surrounded By Surface Corrugations, Guangyuan Li, Feng Xiao, Kun Li, Kamal Alameh, Anshi Xu

Research outputs 2012

We theoretically investigate a widely-used plasmonic structure composed of a nano-slit aperture surrounded by surface corrugations. A systematical semi-analytical theory in form of two nested coupled-mode models is developed to provide intuitive physical pictures. Based on the theory, figures of merit (FoMs) of the structures designed for normal and for oblique incidence/beaming are defined for the first time to incorporate the interlinks among key structural parameters, making global optimization simple and efficient. Both the theory and the FoMs are quantitatively validated with exhaustive calculations and shown to be highly accurate on performance prediction and structural optimization. With the theory and …

Development Of A Structured Concrete Thermocline Thermal Energy Storage System, Bradley M. Brown Dec 2011

Development Of A Structured Concrete Thermocline Thermal Energy Storage System, Bradley M. Brown

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The past couple of decades have shown a concern when considering the way the world obtains its power. The focus has been switching from fossil fuels that have been used for hundreds of years to renewable energy sources, such as the sun. Solar energy is readily and infinitely available for harnessing. One problem with solar energy, though, is its inability to be used during the night time and during cloud covered weather. A solution to this problem is the use of energy storage mechanisms. For solar plants that use solar thermal energy (concentrating solar power plants), thermal energy storage (TES) …

Determining Transverse Design Forces For A Next-D Bridge Using 3d Finite Element Modeling, Robert Funcik Dec 2011

Determining Transverse Design Forces For A Next-D Bridge Using 3d Finite Element Modeling, Robert Funcik

All Theses

This thesis looks into the use of 3D Finite Element Modeling to determine the transverse design forces for short-span bridges built using the Northeast Extreme Tee with integral deck (NEXT-D) beam. Models were built using either solid elements or shell elements to represent the bridge deck, and the results were compared. The stiffness of the shear keys were taken into account during the modeling process. Results were compared to the AASHTO strip width method for design bridge decks, and the results showed that the strip width method would not be adequate for the design of NEXT-D bridges, so specific live …

A New Approach To Dynamic Modeling Of Continuum Robots, Nivedhitha Giri Dec 2011

A New Approach To Dynamic Modeling Of Continuum Robots, Nivedhitha Giri

All Theses

ABSTRACT
In this thesis, a new approach for developing practically realizable dynamic models for continuum robots is proposed. Based on the new dynamic models developed, a novel technique for analyzing the capabilities of continuum manipulators to be employed in various real world applications has also been proposed and developed.
A section of a continuum arm is modeled using lumped model elements (masses, springs and dampers). It is shown that this model, although an approximation to a continuum structure, can be used to conveniently analyze the dynamics of the arm with suitable tradeoff in accuracy of modeling. This relatively simple model …

This work proposes an executable system architecting paradigm for discrete-event system modeling and analysis through integration of a set of modeling tools, executable formalisms, analytical tools, and animation tools. the essential step is converting SysML-Based specifications into colored Petri nets through a conversion scheme proposed here. Such a paradigm permits rigorous static and dynamic system analysis, as well as formal verification of the behavior and functionality of the SysML-Based design. This paper also compares the capabilities of the proposed executable system architecting paradigm with other executable formalisms. Further, it discusses the basic principles of executable architecture specification and analysis for …

Modeling Of Sic P-Channel Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (Igbts), Mahmood Saadeh

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A new physics-based IGBT compact model has been developed for circuit simulation of silicon (Si) or silicon carbide (SiC) devices. The model accurately predicts the steady-state output, transfer and switching characteristics of the IGBT under a variety of different conditions. This is the first IGBT model to predict the behavior of p-channel SiC IGBTs. Previous work on IGBT models has focused on Si n-channel IGBTs [1-3]. This unified model is not limited to SiC p-channel IGBTs; the user has the option to select between Si or SiC, and n-channel or p-channel, making it the first IGBT model that captures the …

Quantitative Evaluation Of Redox Processes In Intact Rat Lungs And Endothelial Cells And The Effect Of Hyperoxia, Zhuohui Gan Oct 2011

Quantitative Evaluation Of Redox Processes In Intact Rat Lungs And Endothelial Cells And The Effect Of Hyperoxia, Zhuohui Gan

Dissertations (1934 -)

A common initial treatment of hypoxemia in patients with lung failure secondary to acute lung injury (e.g., adult respiratory distress syndrome) is oxygen (O2) therapy (hyperoxia). However, prolonged O2 therapy causes lung O2 toxicity, which can further impair lung functions. The rat model of lung O2 toxicity replicates key features of human lung O2 toxicity. In addition, rats develop tolerance or susceptibility to 100% O2 by pre-exposing them to 85% O2 (hyper-85) or 60% O2 (hyper-60) for 7 days, respectively. Therefore, the long-term objectives of this study are to elucidate mechanisms …

Development Of Reduced Complexity Models For Electromagnetic Modeling, Changyi Su Aug 2011

Development Of Reduced Complexity Models For Electromagnetic Modeling, Changyi Su

All Dissertations

The current and field distributions of various structures can be calculated using full-wave numerical modeling codes. However, this approach is limited by the complex models and extensive computational resources required to analyze the details of each structure. In addition, brute-force modeling of the entire geometry provides relatively little physical insight into the electromagnetic interference (EMI) source mechanisms. Alternatively an effective equivalent model can be obtained by eliminating sources and structures that do not contribute significantly to the radiated emissions and focusing on the features that could possibly be significant sources of EMI. Equivalent models are generally much simpler than model-everything …

An Evaluation Of Constitutive Laws And Their Ability To Predict Flow Stress Over Large Variations In Temperature, Strain, And Strain Rate Characteristic Of Friction Stir Welding, Katherine Lynn Kuykendall Jun 2011

An Evaluation Of Constitutive Laws And Their Ability To Predict Flow Stress Over Large Variations In Temperature, Strain, And Strain Rate Characteristic Of Friction Stir Welding, Katherine Lynn Kuykendall

Theses and Dissertations

Constitutive laws commonly used to model friction stir welding have been evaluated, both qualitatively and quantitatively, and a new application of a constitutive law which can be extended to materials commonly used in FSW is presented. Existing constitutive laws have been classified as path-dependent or path-independent. Path-independent laws have been further classified according to the physical phenomena they capture: strain hardening, strain rate hardening, and/or thermal softening. Path-dependent laws can track gradients in temperature and strain rate characteristic to friction stir welding; however, path-independent laws cannot. None of the path-independent constitutive laws evaluated has been validated over the full range …

Hexahedral Mesh Refinement Using An Error Sizing Function, Gaurab Paudel Jun 2011

Hexahedral Mesh Refinement Using An Error Sizing Function, Gaurab Paudel

Theses and Dissertations

The ability to effectively adapt a mesh is a very important feature of high fidelity finite element modeling. In a finite element analysis, a relatively high node density is desired in areas of the model where there are high error estimates from an initial analysis. Providing a higher node density in such areas improves the accuracy of the model and reduces the computational time compared to having a high node density over the entire model. Node densities can be determined for any model using the sizing functions based on the geometry of the model or the error estimates from the …

Turbulence Modeling Of Strongly Heated Internal Pipe Flow Using Large Eddy Simulation, Michal Hradisky May 2011

Turbulence Modeling Of Strongly Heated Internal Pipe Flow Using Large Eddy Simulation, Michal Hradisky

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of three Large Eddy Simulation (LES) subgrid scale (SGS) models on a strongly heated, low Mach number upward gas flow in a vertical pipe with forced convection. The models chosen for this study were the Smagorinsky-Lilly Dynamic model (SLD), the Kinetic Energy Transport model (KET), and the Wall-Adaptive Local-Eddy viscosity model (WALE). The used heating rate was sufficiently large to cause properties to vary significantly in both the radial and streamwise directions. All simulations were carried out using the commercial software FLUENT.

The effect of inlet turbulence generation techniques …
