Revised Polyhedral Conic Functions Algorithm For Supervised Classification, Gürhan Ceylan, Gürkan Öztürk

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In supervised classification, obtaining nonlinear separating functions from an algorithm is crucial for prediction accuracy. This paper analyzes the polyhedral conic functions (PCF) algorithm that generates nonlinear separating functions by only solving simple subproblems. Then, a revised version of the algorithm is developed that achieves better generalization and fast training while maintaining the simplicity and high prediction accuracy of the original PCF algorithm. This is accomplished by making the following modifications to the subproblem: extension of the objective function with a regularization term, relaxation of a hard constraint set and introduction of a new error term. Experimental results show that …

Satire Identification In Turkish News Articles Based On Ensemble Of Classifiers, Aytuğ Onan, Mansur Alp Toçoğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Social media and microblogging platforms generally contain elements of figurative and nonliteral language, including satire. The identification of figurative language is a fundamental task for sentiment analysis. It will not be possible to obtain sentiment analysis methods with high classification accuracy if elements of figurative language have not been properly identified. Satirical text is a kind of figurative language, in which irony and humor have been utilized to ridicule or criticize an event or entity. Satirical news is a pervasive issue on social media platforms, which can be deceptive and harmful. This paper presents an ensemble scheme for satirical news …

Active Learning For Auditory Hierarchy, William Coleman, Sarah Jane Delany, Charlie Cullen, Ming Yan Jan 2020

Active Learning For Auditory Hierarchy, William Coleman, Sarah Jane Delany, Charlie Cullen, Ming Yan

Conference papers

Much audio content today is rendered as a static stereo mix: fundamentally a fixed single entity. Object-based audio envisages the delivery of sound content using a collection of individual sound ‘objects’ controlled by accompanying metadata. This offers potential for audio to be delivered in a dynamic manner providing enhanced audio for consumers. One example of such treatment is the concept of applying varying levels of data compression to sound objects thereby reducing the volume of data to be transmitted in limited bandwidth situations. This application motivates the ability to accurately classify objects in terms of their ‘hierarchy’. That is, whether …

Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering

Cross-contamination between food grains during harvesting, transportation, and/or food processing is still a major issue in the food industry. Due to cross-contact with gluten-rich grains (wheat, barley, and rye grains), gluten can get into food that’s naturally free from gluten and thus may not be safe for consumption for people susceptible to gluten-related disorders such as celiac disease, wheat allergy, gluten intolerance or sensitivity. The conventional method of gluten detection is cumbersome, time-consuming, and requires well-trained personnel. Therefore, there is a need for a rapid and equally effective technique to authenticate gluten contamination in foods. This research work explored the …

Online Clustering With Bayesian Nonparametrics, Matthew D. Scherreik Jan 2020

Online Clustering With Bayesian Nonparametrics, Matthew D. Scherreik

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Clustering algorithms, such as Gaussian mixture models and K-means, often require the number of clusters to be specified a priori. Bayesian nonparametric (BNP) methods avoid this problem by specifying a prior distribution over the cluster assignments that allows the number of clusters to be inferred from the data. This can be especially useful for online clustering tasks, where data arrives in a continuous stream and the number of clusters may dynamically change over time. Classical BNP priors often overestimate the number of clusters, however, leading researchers to develop new priors with more control over this tendency. To date, BNP algorithms …
