Spatial And Temporal Considerations In Vehicle Path Tracking With An Emphasis On Spatial Robustness, Donald L. Cripps

This dissertation researches the task and path management of an autonomous vehicle with Ackerman-type steering.
The task management problem was approached as a path training operation in which a human operator drives the desired path through an environment. A training trajectory is converted into a series of path segments that are driveable by the autonomous vehicle by first fitting a general path to the dataset. Next, transition segments are added to the general path to match the vehicle velocity and steering angle rate limit.

This paper introduces eight so-called conditions of learning (immersion, demonstration, engagement, expectations, responsibility, approximation, employment and response), which have been previously established for the learning of literacy. It is stipulated that these conditions are universal in nature; in other words, they must be present for any learning to occur. When these conditions are met, students learn more efficiently and are able to enjoy and appreciate their subject matter. The article discusses briefly how these conditions were established and their relevance in the study of engineering. Mass Transfer Coefficients For Laminar Longitudinal Flow In Hollow-Fibre Contactors, Ashok S. Sangani, Sangkyun Koo

We consider the problem of predicting the rate of mass transfer to a fluid flowing parallel to the axes of randomly placed aligned tubes, a model of hollow-fibre contactors. The analysis is carried out for the limiting cases of short contactors, for which the concentration boundary layers remain thin compared with the radius of the tubes, and for the fully developed case corresponding to very long tubes. Numerical simulations for random arrays are carried out for N randomly placed tubes within a unit cell of a periodic array. It is shown that the mass transfer coefficient for the fully developed …

(First paragraph) In November 2000, I wrote a Soapbox article on fleet renewal for Sea Technology. It is a little unsettling to see how slowly ideas move towards implementation. Nevertheless, we are making progress. In this editorial I will note a bit of that progress and try to guess where we will be in two more years.
