Transition From Unilamellar To Bilameller Vesicles Induced By An Amphiphilic Biopolymer, Jae-Ho Lee, Vivek Argarwal, Arijit Bose, Gregory F. Payne, Srinivasa R. Raghavan Feb 2006

Transition From Unilamellar To Bilameller Vesicles Induced By An Amphiphilic Biopolymer, Jae-Ho Lee, Vivek Argarwal, Arijit Bose, Gregory F. Payne, Srinivasa R. Raghavan

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

We report some unusual structural transitions upon the addition of an amphiphilic biopolymer to unilamellar surfactant vesicles. The polymer is a hydrophobically modified chitosan and it embeds its hydrophobes in vesicle bilayers. We study vesicle-polymer mixtures using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and cryotransmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). When low amounts of the polymer are added to unilamellar vesicles of ca. 120 nm diameter, the vesicle size decreases by about 50%. Upon further addition of polymer, lamellar peaks are observed in the SANS spectra at high scattering vectors. We show that these spectra correspond to a co-existence of unilamellar and bilamellar vesicles. …

Five Good Reasons For Engineering As The Focus For Technology Education, Robert C. Wicklein Jan 2006

Five Good Reasons For Engineering As The Focus For Technology Education, Robert C. Wicklein

Publications

The article presents information on a paper which discusses why engineering design should be the focus for technology education. Technology education is still viewed as a non-essential instructional program and this is because school administrators and counselors have inadequate understanding of it. Even general populace have inadequate understanding concerning technology education. The pervasiveness of technology literally affects every living creature in our society. Therefore, it is of critical importance that the educational system includes and supports the study of technology in the general curricula. The deficiency within the technology education profession to formulate a clear and defined target for the …

Engineering Student Outcomes For Grades 9-12, Vincent Childress, Craig Rhodes Jan 2006

Engineering Student Outcomes For Grades 9-12, Vincent Childress, Craig Rhodes

Reports of Center Studies

The following research study was conducted during the 2005 – 2006 academic year. Its purpose is to help the National Center for Engineering and Technology Education determine those engineering outcomes that should be studied in high school when the high school student intends to pursue engineering in college. The results of the study will also be used to determine those engineering student outcomes that all technology education high school students should learn in order to aid them in becoming more technologically literate.

A modified Delphi approach as used for the study. The participants were a panel of experts consisting of …

Women, Engineering And Research: Providing Choice And Balance, Cecilia Chan, Mike Murphy Jan 2006

Women, Engineering And Research: Providing Choice And Balance, Cecilia Chan, Mike Murphy

Conference papers

“Research cannot reach its full potential when half the population is excluded from its activities”1. Women researchers in engineering remain a minority in both Higher Education and industry in Ireland. Recent statistics of women graduating in science and engineering indicated an increase (a slow increase) but the numbers moving through to completion of PhD and careers in academia or industry remain quite low. Statistics on women in professorial and senior positions within the engineering sector also remains low. The educated workforce produced in Ireland by its education system is acknowledged as a key factor in attracting international investment to the …

Fuel Cell Design For Gas Hydrates Exploration And Research, Gerhard Sauer Jan 2006

Fuel Cell Design For Gas Hydrates Exploration And Research, Gerhard Sauer

Masters

In this thesis the design, manufacture and testing of an Alkaline Fuel Cell (AFC) that provide electrical power to a deep sea measurement problem is described. The fuel cell was designed to operate in a long-term mode at low temperatures. The power required for the measurement probe was in the order of 5 Watts. The measurement probe was designed to operate at a depth of 3000m in sea water at a temperature of approx. 5°C and at 300 bar pressure

the main design issues included: The design of a Fuel Cell to operate at these conditions and produce enough energy …

Recruiting First Year Engineering Undergraduates, Eddie Conlon Jan 2006

Recruiting First Year Engineering Undergraduates, Eddie Conlon

Conference papers

This paper presents findings of three surveys conducted with first year students in the Faculty of Engineering in the Dublin Institute of Technology. It presents evidence on the reasons students study engineering, their sources of information on higher education programmes and the people who influence their decision to do engineering. It shows there are gaps in the students’ knowledge of their programmes and also between their expectations and their experience of their course. Some proposed areas of action are identified to increase both recruitment and retention. It is argued that projecting an image of engineering as a creative activity would …

Cognitive Engineering Research Methodology: A Proposed Study Of Visualization Analysis Techniques, Cristin M. Hall, Sonya A.H. Mcmullen, David L. Hall Jan 2006

Cognitive Engineering Research Methodology: A Proposed Study Of Visualization Analysis Techniques, Cristin M. Hall, Sonya A.H. Mcmullen, David L. Hall

Publications

The rapid development of new sensors and wide-band communications provides the capability to collect enormous amounts of data. An increasing challenge involves how to understand and interpret the data to yield knowledge about evolving situations or threats (e.g., of military situations, state of complex systems, etc.). New visualization tools and techniques are becoming available to support advanced visualization including three-dimensional, full immersion display environments and tools to support novel visualizations. Examples include network system display tools and evolving multi-sensory situation environments. Despite the emergence of such tools, there has been limited systematic test and evaluations to determine the efficacy of …

Management Of System Of Systems Engineering: System Of Systems Engineering Requirements, Charles Keating, Andres Sousa-Poza, Samuel Kovacic Jan 2006

Management Of System Of Systems Engineering: System Of Systems Engineering Requirements, Charles Keating, Andres Sousa-Poza, Samuel Kovacic

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Traditional systems engineering focuses efforts on developing requirements that are assumed to be objective, definitive, and unwavering. However, the function, development, and utilization of requirements for System of Systems Engineering (SoSE) do not have the level of maturity or sophistication as traditional systems engineering. To avoid miscalculation of the nature and role of requirements in SoSE, a closer examination is necessary. It would be presumptuous to assume that SoSE requirements are a simple extrapolation of traditional systems engineering requirements. The purpose of this paper is to explore the nature of requirements from a SoSE perspective. This examination is concentrated in …
