Pressure Recovery Analysis Downstream Of Valves And Meters: An Experimental And Numerical Investigation, Stephen J. Sanders
Pressure Recovery Analysis Downstream Of Valves And Meters: An Experimental And Numerical Investigation, Stephen J. Sanders
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
In pressurized water systems, flow control devices such as valves and meters cause pressure losses that can affect energy efficiency and measurement accuracy. Industry standards assume that all devices recover within the same distance downstream, but this may not be true for all device types. In this study we used laboratory testing and computer modeling to determine how far downstream pressure stabilizes after flowing through various valves and meters. Devices like Venturi meters recovered pressure quickly, while orifice plates required longer distances and resulted in greater permanent energy loss. In most cases, pressure recovered within four to six pipe diameters. …

Effect Of Various Canopy Shapes On The Drag Coefficient Of Pickup Trucks, Khairil Anwar, Muhammad Syaiful Fadly, Muhammad Wahyu Hermanto
Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)
The aerodynamic performance of light commercial vehicles, such as the Suzuki Carry, plays a crucial role in their fuel economy and road stability. One typical add-on, a canopy, often changes that airflow and, as a result, alters the drag acting on the vehicle. In this study, three different canopy shapes, flat, curved, and triangular, were examined to understand how each one affects the drag coefficient (Cd). To investigate this, both wind tunnel trials and CFD runs were conducted to track the airflow and measure any changes in drag with greater detail. For reference, the exact vehicle without a canopy was …
Stability Analysis Of Turbulent Fluid Flow, Adam D. Schroeder
Stability Analysis Of Turbulent Fluid Flow, Adam D. Schroeder
Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects
Hydrodynamic stability refers to the study of when and how laminar flows transition to turbulence. This includes investigations of the mechanisms of transition, as well as the classification of known flow configurations as either stable or unstable and the identification of critical values of flow parameters at which this bifurcation occurs. In this thesis, we introduce the mathematical theory behind continuum mechanics and fluid dynamics as well as some tools from the study of dynamical systems. We apply these concepts to the linear stability analysis of zero pressure gradient flat plate flow via numerical simulations in OpenFOAM, discussing both the …

Two-phase configurations can address the urgent demand for effective heat dissipation solutions in Naval power and energy systems. A better understanding of thermal transport processes in phase-change flows is critical for developing novel two-phase design tools for naval scientists and engineers. This study investigates interfacial phase change and flow dynamics during condensation flow through numerical simulations. An enhanced phase change model, incorporating a mass transfer intensity coefficient dependent on condensation film thickness, is implemented for vertical downflow condensation. A two-dimensional homogeneous two-phase Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes model, coupled with the Shear-Stress Transport k-ω turbulence model, is employed. The developed solver is thoroughly …

Wind-Resilient Solar: Harnessing Cfd For Enhanced Load Estimation, Aly Mousaad Aly
Faculty Publications
Solar panels are a cornerstone of renewable energy infrastructure, playing a pivotal role in global sustainability efforts. To ensure their resilience and long-term viability, accurate wind load estimations are essential for designing supporting structures, which account for nearly 50% of their total cost. However, traditional building codes lack comprehensive guidance for solar panels, resulting in inconsistent estimations due to discrepancies in scaled wall-bounded wind tunnel testing methodologies. These inaccuracies pose safety risks, increase costs, and hinder adoption. Emerging technologies like computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations offer a promising alternative by enabling full-scale analysis under realistic conditions of complete turbulence. This …

Numerical Investigation Of Wind Disturbance Around A Multirotor Uav In Crosswind And Vertical Flight, Garrison Page
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are being increasingly utilized in a wide range of research applications, especially in meteorology. This is due to such factors as their ease of use, maneuverability compared to other forms of data collection, and for rotor- craft, the ability to hover. However, the rotorwash generated by UAVs can introduce significant disturbances, potentially affecting measurement accuracy from sensors. While several studies have investigated the rotorwash of individual UAVs utilizing Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), there is limited exploration into how different rotor configurations and external wind conditions influence regions of turbulent flow around …

Development Of An Immersed Boundary Method-Wall Modeled Large Eddy Simulation Approach For Incompressible Flows And Aeroacoustic Predictions, John C. Higgins
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
The performance capabilities of rotorcraft have improved significantly in the past decade as both manned and unmanned rotorcraft become a larger part of future transportation systems. Private companies as well as various government offices have worked to develop capabilities ranging from transportation/package delivery to intelligence/surveillance to livestock monitoring. Their practicality in both rural and urban areas, however, is questionable due to the significant tonal and broadband noise which is produced by the rotors. Public acceptance of rotorcraft, namely small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (sUAVs), in transportation systems is an issue largely associated with the noise generation and it's effect on nearby …

Hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) is considered an energy-efficient process with high potential for utilization in many chemical processes. This study presents a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of cavitating flow through an orifice with a constant flow area. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations, coupled with turbulence and cavitation models, are employed to capture the complex flow behaviors. The effects of inlet pressures and number of orifice-holes on cavitation behavior are investigated. Result of the numerical simulation is validated with the existing experimental data from the literature. The CFD study revealed that cavitation initiates just behind the inlet edge of the orifice …

On The Turbulent Viscosity Parameter Cμ In The K–Ε Model, Harshit Mishra, Subhas Karan Venayagamoorthy
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) models depend on empirical constants to close the Reynolds stress terms. The empirical constants were obtained using experiments conducted at low Reynolds numbers several decades ago. In this paper, we revisit the turbulent viscosity parameter Cμ, based on the stress–intensity ratio c2 = |uw|/k. Here, |uw| and k are the absolute values of the Reynolds stress and turbulent kinetic energy, respectively. Through a priori comparisons, we find that the currently accepted value of Cμ = 0.09 does not agree with the latest direct numerical simulation (DNS) and experimental datasets of wall-bounded turbulent planar flows. Therefore, …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling Of 12.25” Horizontal Wellbores To Identify The Effects Of Pipe Rotation On Cuttings Transport Efficiency, David Rathgeber
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
As global demand for oil and gas continues to rise alongside pressures to curb climate change, Exploration and Production (E&P) companies look to reduce their surface footprint and increase drilling efficiency through longer horizontal well drilling. In addition, the depletion of conventional reservoirs is causing E&P companies to target more difficult reservoirs, often miles offshore (Gupta et al., 2014; Meader et al., 2000a). The increased horizontal reach of these wells often leads to increased challenges in adequate hole cleaning during drilling operations. Efficient hole cleaning becomes a greater challenge in high-angle wells, with gravitational forces causing pipe eccentricity, flow channeling, …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling Of Air Demand For Fixed Cone Valve In Energy Dissipating Structure, Matthew S. Harames
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Fixed cone valves are commonly installed as low-level outlet devices to discharge water from reservoirs. When discharging water, the fixed cone valves require an air vent to properly operate and maintain the valve. There is a current lack of published information regarding the accuracy of model studies to properly estimate the air demand on the full-size prototype. This research aims to help close that gap by providing data comparison between a model and prototype. Furthermore, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations may be used to estimate the air demand, but the results of such have not been verified nor is information …

Avgas fuel consumption on Cessna trainer aircraft is very high. However, there has been little research regarding spray impacts in Cessna aircraft engines. The phenomenon of avgas spray colliding with the cylinder wall may occur during fuel injection, resulting in a changed spray radius and height, which will affect the mixing of fuel and air. In several aspects, this affects engine performance and exhaust emissions on Cessna aircraft. This research aims to determine and study the phenomenon of spray impact on avgasfueled aircraft engines. The fuel spray in the study occurred in the combustion chamber using pressure from a fuel …
Numerical Simulations Of Supersonic/ Hypersonic Flows In Compression Corners And A Hypersonic Flow Study Of Atmospheric Entry Of Mars Science Laboratory Capsule, Dexter Allen
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
This thesis consists of two related parts. The first part is the study of supersonic/hypersonic flow in compression corners. The compression corners are simple geometries but rich in flow-features that can be challenging for accurate prediction of their flow fields in high-speed compressible flow using the Reynold-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations in conjunction with a turbulence model. At higher degrees of corner angles, there exists a shock-boundary layer interaction region which includes a significant recirculation zone in the corner. In this thesis, experimentally available test cases for compression corner at Mach 3, 8, and 11 at various corner angles are modeled …

Previous studies evaluating this particular CFD model have produced results that compare the touchdown swirl ratio (STD), core radius (rc), maximum tangential velocity at touchdown (Vtmax @ STD), and height of the maximum tangential velocity (zc) reasonably well with experimental data from the VorTECH facility. The effects of swirl ratio beyond STD on important vortex parameters including rc, Vtmax, z …
Field Flow Measurements For Pipe Installations With Non-Ideal Conditions, Jake Douglas
Field Flow Measurements For Pipe Installations With Non-Ideal Conditions, Jake Douglas
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Accurate flow measurement data is necessary to effectively manage water resources. The purpose of this research is to investigate options to improve field flow measurement by investigating alternatives for calibrating flow meters installed in non-ideal piping. Typically, to accurately measure a flow rate using most types of flow meters, it is recommended that a straight section of pipe be installed immediately upstream and downstream of the flow meter to avoid flow fluctuations at the meter location. However, in many cases, flow disturbances upstream of the meter are unavoidable.
The performance of field flow measurements in non-ideal piping scenarios were studied …
Computational Fluid Dynamics Study Of Perforated Monopiles, Mary Kathryn Walker
Computational Fluid Dynamics Study Of Perforated Monopiles, Mary Kathryn Walker
Theses and Dissertations
Monopiles are used in the construction of offshore wind turbines and typically have a design life of 25 to 50 years. Over their lifecycle, monopiles are exposed to a corrosive saltwater environment, facilitating a galvanic oxidation process that quickly degrades the structure. This process can be mitigated by coating the monopile in a protective barrier and implementing cathodic protection techniques. Historically, monopile designers assumed the interior of the pile would be completely sealed and the galvanic corrosion process would eventually consume all the available oxygen, halting the reaction. However, penetrations made in the pile wall for conduit often leaked and …

The laminar, thermally developing flow of gases in a two-dimensional parallel plate channel is studied here. Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the combined effects of convection and real gas radiation are explored. Gas mixtures composed of H2O, CO2, and N2 are considered. To account for radiation in the participating medium, the Spectral Line Weighted-sum-of-gray-gases model is used. The model formulation, verification, and validation are provided through published articles written by the primary author. The predictions made for the case of combined convection and radiation are compared to the solution for the classical pure convection case, known as the Graetz solution. …

Development Of On-The-Fly Quasi-Steady State Approximation For Chemical Kinetics In Cfd, Abhinav Balamurugan
Development Of On-The-Fly Quasi-Steady State Approximation For Chemical Kinetics In Cfd, Abhinav Balamurugan
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
This study analyzes the feasibility of On-The-Fly Quasi-Steady-State Approximation (OTF-QSSA) application for solving chemical kinetics within Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, aiming to reduce the computational demand of detailed mechanisms. An algorithm that dynamically identifies and designates Quasi-Steady-State (QSS) species at specific grid locations and instances during the simulation was developed. With this information, our method pseudo-delays the advancement of concentrations for these QSS species—effectively setting their rate of concentration change to zero for a set number iteration before updating using the detailed mechanism and thereby omitting the computationally intensive processes typically required for their calculation during those skipped iteration. …
