Geometric Effects Of Warfighters On Body Armor Fit And Protective Capabilities Against Shock Wave Energy, Melissa Lynn Sutter Jan 2026

Geometric Effects Of Warfighters On Body Armor Fit And Protective Capabilities Against Shock Wave Energy, Melissa Lynn Sutter

Doctoral Dissertations

Body armor is a vital piece of protective equipment for warfighters to defend against threats, necessitating continued development to improve comfort, weight, and protection. However, female warfighters often wear unisex body armor, designed primarily for the male torso. Current research has evaluated the short- and long-term detriments of female warfighters wearing these armors, focusing on comfort and performance. However, these studies do not comprehensively consider how a non-form-fitting armor compromises warfighter safety from battlefield threats. This research examines the geometric effects of female warfighters on armor protection level when defending against shock threats by evaluating the energy distribution on a …

A Comprehensive Statistical And Regional Analysis Of Lng-Powered Marine Vessels On Ghg Mitigation Strategies Considering Existing Bunkering Stations And Gwp Values, Canberk Hazar, Onur Yuksel, Murat Bayraktar

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study aims to quantify and analyse emissions from marine vessels that can operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG) but continue to use conventional fuels, largely due to the limited availability of LNG bunkering stations (BSs) over long distances. Four regions have been identified as having high concentrations of LNG-fueled vessels but limited access to operational BSs: the West Coast of the United States of America (USA), South Africa–Good Hope–Madagascar, Northwest Africa, and Brazil. This selection is based on the geographical distribution of these ships and the existing infrastructure. Hourly greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been calculated by considering the …

The growing demand for rare earth elements (REEs) in clean energy and high-tech industries underscores the need for sustainable recovery methods and a reliable supply of processing chemicals. Here, we establish a microbial platform using the acid-tolerant yeast Issatchenkia orientalis SD108 to produce bio-oxalic acid for REE recovery. By introducing an oxaloacetate cleavage pathway and applying metabolic engineering, the engineered strain produces 39.53 g·L-1 oxalic acid at pH 4.0 in fed-batch fermentation. The crude fermentation broth, used without purification, efficiently precipitates over 99% neodymium (Nd), 99% dysprosium (Dy), and 98% lanthanum (La) from individual REE chloride solutions. Recovery from …

Characterization Of Full Bridge Strain Transducers For Haulage Equipment Payload Distribution Monitoring, Jean-Pierre Strydom, Steven Schafrik, Zacharias Agioutantis, Matthew J. Beck, Joseph Sottile

Mining Engineering Faculty Publications

Creating a dependable approach for identifying both the mass of a shuttle car and how material is distributed in it removes the need for equipment operators to manually engage the flight chain. The quantification of environmental and installation conditions and the extent of influence considering their combined contribution towards inaccurate or exclusive measurements are to that degree limited. This experimental study investigated how two different strain transducers—installed in a force-shunt configuration—respond to thermo-mechanical loads when used to determine load distribution and position. Initial observations indicated that thermal effects at the installation site contributed to measurement inaccuracies or exclusive readings. The …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Skilled labor shortages are a pressing issue in the construction industry. Existing research has primarily focused on the effects of labor shortages at the project or industry level, but there is limited exploration of how these shortages vary across specific trades and their distinct impacts on project outcomes. Evidence indicates that labor shortages vary significantly among trades. This paper addresses this knowledge gap through quantitatively assessing the criticality of key construction trades based on the (1) extent of skilled labor shortages currently witnessed in each trade, (2) impact of these shortages on cost and schedule performance, and (3) degree of …

Flow Regime-Independent Two-Group Interfacial Area Concentration Model For Dispersed Gas-Liquid Flows In Large-Diameter Pipes, Hossein Barati, Takashi Hibiki, Joshua P. Schlegel, Naofumi Tsukamoto Jan 2026

Flow Regime-Independent Two-Group Interfacial Area Concentration Model For Dispersed Gas-Liquid Flows In Large-Diameter Pipes, Hossein Barati, Takashi Hibiki, Joshua P. Schlegel, Naofumi Tsukamoto

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In many power plants, boiling can result in two-phase flows during normal and accident conditions. Heat and mass transfers through the gas-liquid interface in a two-phase flow process are proportional to the interfacial area concentration (IAC). These calculations for nuclear systems are typically performed using advanced system analysis codes such as TRACE. TRACE uses a two-group (2G) model, where bubbles are divided into two groups according to their drag coefficients. Correlations are used to calculate the group-wise void fractions (VFs) and IACs. This study evaluates the accuracy of the TRACE 2G VF and IAC models for vertically upward dispersed flows …

Nahb Production Home Competition As A Learning Tool Towards Incorporating Business Skills In Construction Management Programs, George Berghorn, Chandler Jones, M.G. Matt Syal

The Professional Constructor

There is a growing realization in the construction industry that the traditional focus of Construction Management (CM) education on technical competencies (such as scheduling, estimating, and construction methods) is insufficient in preparing graduates to meet the strategic and leadership demands of the modern construction profession. A successful construction company requires more than project execution; it demands expertise in business development, financial management, marketing, risk management, and organizational leadership. The disparity between the technical and business aspects of CM education has produced graduates who may succeed in project management yet find it challenging to engage with comprehensive business operations.

Biaxial Bending Response Of Prestressed Concrete Girders Subjected To Accidental Asymmetric Prestressing Strand Loss, Haitham Abdelmalek, Mohanad Abdulazeez, Ahmed Ibrahim, Mohamed Elgawady Jan 2026

Biaxial Bending Response Of Prestressed Concrete Girders Subjected To Accidental Asymmetric Prestressing Strand Loss, Haitham Abdelmalek, Mohanad Abdulazeez, Ahmed Ibrahim, Mohamed Elgawady

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Bridge prestressed concrete girders are vulnerable to sudden rupture of prestressing strands caused by accidental collisions with over-height trucks. These incidents often result in the asymmetric loss of prestressing strands and concrete sections, generating a biaxial bending moment caused by the combined effects of lateral bending and existing service loads. The induced lateral bending moment reduces the flexural resistance of prestressed concrete (PC) girders. However, the current AASHTO LRFD (load and resistance factor design) provisions for flexural resistance in PC members do not explicitly address the complexities introduced by biaxial bending, leaving the extent of strength reduction uncertain. This paper …

Characterization Of Tomographic Piv System For Single-Phase Immersion Cooling Applications, Joel Joshua Oommen Jan 2026

Characterization Of Tomographic Piv System For Single-Phase Immersion Cooling Applications, Joel Joshua Oommen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses

As the rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) infrastructure and High-Performance Computing (HPC) pushes power requirements to new heights, traditional air-cooling methods have become inadequate for modern server demands. Consequently, single-phase immersion cooling (SPIC) has emerged as one of the effective and sustainable alternatives, utilizing dielectric fluids to remove heat through direct contact with electronic components. Despite numerous thermal and reliability studies, the complex three-dimensional movement of buoyant thermal plumes around intricate component shapes are not yet fully understood in confined spaces.

This thesis provides a detailed characterization of Tomo-PIV and a component level experimental study of flow patterns in …

Scaling Llm Inference: From Novel Attention Mechanisms To Efficient Kv Cache Management, Weishu Deng Jan 2026

Scaling Llm Inference: From Novel Attention Mechanisms To Efficient Kv Cache Management, Weishu Deng

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations

The rapid scaling of artificial intelligence workloads has shifted the dominant performance bottleneck of modern computing systems from compute to memory. Graph neural networks (GNNs) issue increasingly irregular memory accesses, while large language models (LLMs) issue increasingly large ones; in both cases, the relative scaling of memory bandwidth and capacity continues to lag behind the scaling of compute. Consequently, naively executing these workloads on commodity GPUs results in stalled streaming multiprocessors, exhausted high-bandwidth memory (HBM), and serving stacks that incur PCIe transfers on the critical path. This dissertation argues that the efficient scaling of attention-based AI workloads requires the joint …

Anaerobic Digestion Of Variable, Heterogeneous Organic Wastes Under Changing Operational Conditions And Bioaugmentation: Impacts On Process Performance And Microbiome Dynamics, Victoria Holliday

Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering

Expanding the adoption of anaerobic digestion (AD) is limited by system instabilities caused by feedstock composition and variability. Understanding how changes in feedstock and operational parameters influence microbiome dynamics is essential for developing biology-driven strategies to improve digester stability.

Two semi-continuous reactors, an experimental and a control, operated over 39 weeks across five phases with varying feedstocks and organic loading rates. Substrate-specific enrichment cultures were developed for bioaugmentation and implemented in select phases to assess its impact. Both reactors exhibited similar performance, transitioning through periods of stability, stress, and recovery in response to operational changes. Corresponding shifts in dominant taxa …

The Lie Group Basis Of Neuronal Membrane Architecture: Why The Hodgkin–Huxley Equations Take Their Form, Robert Melendy, Daniel Blue Jan 2026

The Lie Group Basis Of Neuronal Membrane Architecture: Why The Hodgkin–Huxley Equations Take Their Form, Robert Melendy, Daniel Blue

Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

The Hodgkin–Huxley equations have successfully described neuronal excitability for over seventy years, yet their mathematical structure remains empirically justified rather than theoretically explained. Why are gating variables bounded between 0 and 1? Why does sodium conductance depend on m3h rather than other combinations? Why does potassium depend on n4? Why do all rate functions contain exponential voltage dependencies? Why are the kinetics first-order? We demonstrate that these structural features arise naturally from three fundamental physical symmetries governing ion channel dynamics: the compactness of conformational state space, the scaling invariance of membrane conductance, and temporal translation invariance. …

Synthesis Of Nickel Nanoparticles By Gamma Irradiation And Femtosecond Laser Ablation, V. M. Rao, Y. Han, H. Tsai, C. H.C. Giraldo, T. Akyurek

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Nickel nanoparticles were synthesized by (i) gamma irradiation of aqueous nickel chloride precursors and (ii) double scan femtosecond laser (FSL) ablation of a pure nickel foil in water. The nanoparticles produced by FSL ablation were further stabilized in acetone. Gamma radiolysis yielded nickel nanoparticles in the 2–22 nm range, with the average particle diameter governed by the total absorbed dose. Nickel nanoparticles produced by double scan FSL ablation were in the 2–17 nm range but less monodispersed than the nanoparticles produced via gamma radiolysis. FSL ablation proved to be superior in terms of yielding a higher number of smaller nanoparticles …

Formalizing Asymmetric Control-Telemetry Separation In Distributed Industrial Control Systems, Andrew Manison Jan 2026

Formalizing Asymmetric Control-Telemetry Separation In Distributed Industrial Control Systems, Andrew Manison

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Distributed industrial control systems often place control and telemetry traffic on the same communication substrate even though the two workloads impose different requirements. Control paths need bounded request-response latency and predictable acknowledgement semantics, whereas telemetry paths benefit from scalable publish-subscribe fanout and tolerance for consumer-side delay. This thesis argues that, for the tested class of mixed workloads on shared commodity infrastructure, these communication roles should be separated architecturally rather than forced through a single protocol. To evaluate that claim, the thesis formalizes an asymmetric control- telemetry pattern and instantiates it in the Asymtra framework using gRPC for synchronous control and …

Effect Of Wall Movement On Porosity Formation In Ductile Iron Castings Under Varying Processing Parameters, Shamsul Alam Jan 2026

Effect Of Wall Movement On Porosity Formation In Ductile Iron Castings Under Varying Processing Parameters, Shamsul Alam

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Shrinkage porosity is a major defect that significantly impairs the mechanical properties and overall performance of ductile iron castings. Although graphite formation during solidification induces volumetric expansion, this expansion alone is insufficient to fully compensate for the shrinkage occurring throughout solidification. During the solidification and cooling of ductile iron, multiple phase transformations occur, resulting in dynamic volume changes that exert pressure on mold walls and internal cavities. These pressures can deform mold walls and casting surfaces, leading to defects such as swell and porosity, while also influencing shrinkage formation. This study aims to analyze the mechanisms of porosity formation and …

Viscoelastic Behavior Of Magnetically Filled Pdms Elastomers: Influence Of Filler Loading And Particle Type, Madison Procyk Jan 2026

Viscoelastic Behavior Of Magnetically Filled Pdms Elastomers: Influence Of Filler Loading And Particle Type, Madison Procyk

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) offer a promising pathway for soft, magnetically actuated drug‑delivery systems, yet material‑selection guidelines remain unclear due to limited comparative data across particle chemistries, size scales, and concentrations. This study systematically evaluates how magnetic filler type (carbonyl iron and magnetite) and particle size (micro vs. nano), at two weight percentages – 40 wt% and 50 wt% – in Sylgard 184 PDMS influence the viscoelastic behavior of MREs intended for compliant biomedical actuation. Eight particle formulations were prepared through sieving, controlled mixing, vacuum degassing, and isotropic curing, producing nineteen total specimens (16 with filler particles and 3 without). Dynamic …

Influence Of The Sst K-Ω Stress-Limiter Coefficient On Transonic Shock Buffet Prediction For The Oat15a Supercritical Airfoil, Melinawo Vowotor

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Transonic shock buffet predictions using the Shear Stress Transport (SST) k–ω turbulence model are known to be sensitive to the stress-limiter coefficient a₁, yet no systematic investigation of this sensitivity exists. This thesis presents a parametric study of a₁ for two-dimensional URANS simulation of shock buffet on the OAT15A supercritical airfoil at M = 0.73 and Re = 3 × 10⁶. Eleven a₁ values (0.25–0.37) are examined at α = 3.5°, and a matrix of five a₁ values across five angles of attack (3.0°–3.9°) maps the interaction with incidence. The results reveal that a₁ acts as a bifurcation parameter: a …

Effects Of Composition, Nodularity, Pouring Temperature, Inoculation, And Mold Strength On Wall-Movement In Sgi Castings During Solidification And Cooling, Noah Brack Jan 2026

Effects Of Composition, Nodularity, Pouring Temperature, Inoculation, And Mold Strength On Wall-Movement In Sgi Castings During Solidification And Cooling, Noah Brack

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The iron-carbon casting alloy known as spheroidal graphite iron (SGI), nodular graphite iron, or ductile iron (DI) experiences complex volume changes during its solidification and cooling as graphite nodules and austenite form. These volume changes result in forces on the mold cavity walls and can deform the mold walls in cases when mold walls lack the strength to resist the deformation. This wall movement can cause the formation of casting defects such as swell, warped part geometry, and shrinkage porosity. Though this phenomenon has been studied in the past, it remains difficult to predict casting wall movement with existing data. …

Design Of Artificial Interference Signal Waveforms For Covert Communication Aided By Multiple Friendly Nodes, Xuyang Zhao, Wei Guo, Yongchao Wang, Shihao Yan Jan 2026

Design Of Artificial Interference Signal Waveforms For Covert Communication Aided By Multiple Friendly Nodes, Xuyang Zhao, Wei Guo, Yongchao Wang, Shihao Yan

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

In this work, we consider a covert communication scenario with multiple friendly interference nodes. The goal is to hide a legitimate communication link from a transmitter to a receiver under a warden’s surveillance. Firstly, we propose a novel strategy for generating artificial noise (AN) signals and formulate a corresponding design problem, aiming to minimize the adverse effects of AN on the legitimate receiver while enhancing communication covertness. Specifically, we optimize the basis matrix for AN signal space using statistical information of the involved channel coefficients, when precise channel state information are unavailable. Secondly, we analyze the geometric structure of the …

C2p-M: Critical Connection Protection In Multiplex Graphs, Conggai Li, Wei Ni, Ming Ding, Youyang Qu, Jianjun Chen, Wenjie Zhang, Thierry Rakotoarivelo Jan 2026

C2p-M: Critical Connection Protection In Multiplex Graphs, Conggai Li, Wei Ni, Ming Ding, Youyang Qu, Jianjun Chen, Wenjie Zhang, Thierry Rakotoarivelo

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Multiplex graphs represent diverse real-world interactions among entities, where multiple relationship types coexist within the same set of entities. These graphs introduce privacy risks, as data collectors can exploit cross-layer dependencies to infer hidden and sensitive connections. In this work, we propose a C2P-M framework that identifies and protects critical connections while preserving the structural information in multiplex graphs. Unlike conventional methods for single-layer graphs that perturb all edges uniformly, C2P-M selectively protects critical connections, maintaining the analytical usability of the graph. To achieve this, we introduce the multiplex p-cohesion model, which incorporates new score functions that account for both …

Fracture Energy Of Ambient-Cured Fly Ash-Based Geopolymer Concrete, Alireza Mohyeddin, Trijon Karmokar, Mohammad Fardipour

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Fracture energy is a key parameter in current prediction models for capacity of structural anchors. During broader research on behaviour of structural anchors in ambient-cured fly ash-based geopolymer concrete, it was realised that despite extensive literature on Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and other types of geopolymer concrete, there is a lack of literature on fracture energy of such geopolymer concretes. The purpose of the current research is to measure this property for this specific type of concrete using Wedge Splitting Test (WST) method. This method was selected due to its stable crack propagation and suitability for small-sized specimens. The influence …

Synergistic Removal Of Microplastic Fibres: Integrating Chitosan Coagulation In Hybrid Water Pre-Treatment Systems, Jayasuriya Arachchilage Nimesha Thathsarani Jan 2026

Synergistic Removal Of Microplastic Fibres: Integrating Chitosan Coagulation In Hybrid Water Pre-Treatment Systems, Jayasuriya Arachchilage Nimesha Thathsarani

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Microplastic fibres (MPFs) are the most prevalent form of microplastics detected in the influents of water and wastewater treatment plants. Owing to their elongated shape and low density, MPFs frequently evade removal even during tertiary processes such as membrane filtration. Enhancing pretreatment, particularly through cost-effective coagulation-flocculation can reduce the treatment burden on downstream systems. However, conventional inorganic coagulants often necessitate high dosages and can leave residual ions, posing environmental concerns.

As a sustainable alternative, the use of environmentally friendly coagulants such as Chitosan has gained attention for MPF removal. While Chitosan exhibits favourable qualities, its practical application is hindered by …
