Aqueous Carbonation Of Steel Slags: A Comparative Study On Mechanisms, Nannan Zhang, Gao Deng, Wenyu Liao, Hongyan Ma, Chuanlin Hu
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study investigated the aqueous carbonation mechanisms of three typical steel slags: ladle metallurgy furnace (LMF) slag containing high Al content, electric arc furnace (EAF) slag featuring high Si content and relatively low Al content, and ladle-arc fusion (LAF) slag with medium-Al content. It was found that the carbonation kinetics of the three slags were similar and followed the surface coverage model within the first 6 h of carbonation. Initially, the carbonation process was primarily governed by the reaction product precipitation. After 3 h of carbonation, the process was dominated by mineral dissolution, controlled by the uncovered reactive sites. The …

Kentucky’s renewable energy landscape beats with a distinct rhythm shaped by ever-changing variations in sunlight, wind, rainfall, and the ever-modernizing grid that connects them. This paper analyzes minute-by-minute performance data from seven renewable and storage assets owned and operated by the PPL Corporation in Kentucky, including hydroelectric, solar, wind, and lithium-ion battery systems. Using a full year of synchronized, high-resolution data from multiple sites in the Commonwealth, the study examines daily and seasonal capacity factor trends, explores correlations among generation types, and evaluates their alignment with utility load profiles. Our analysis found 279 hours—about 3.2% of the year—with zero renewable …
Reevaluating The Van’T Hoff And Arrhenius Equations: How Temperature And Pressure Affect Chemical Reaction Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, And Kinetics, Jianmin Wang
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The van’t Hoff equation, which is used to calculate the effect of temperature on equilibrium constants, was derived from the Gibbs – Helmholtz equation that relates the molar Gibbs free energy to the molar enthalpy of a chemical reaction. However, the Gibbs – Helmholtz equation was developed for systems that do not consider contributions of Gibbs free energy from chemical species. Consequently, the van’t Hoff equation and the Arrhenius equation derived from it are technically incomplete.
By employing Hess’s law and the appropriate Gibbs free energy equation for chemical reaction systems, this investigation develops theoretical equations to calculate the effects …
Smart Homes, Grids, And Electric Vehicles Large-Scale Integration Studies Employing Machine Learning And Optimization Techniques, Rosemary E. Alden
Smart Homes, Grids, And Electric Vehicles Large-Scale Integration Studies Employing Machine Learning And Optimization Techniques, Rosemary E. Alden
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Residential digital twins are fundamental to the smart grid transition, and thus, must be both accurate and representative of existing homes and scalable for large distribution systems. Within this dissertation, new machine learning (ML) and physics-based methodologies are applied to the major individual residential loads, energy storage devices, and resources in the US to develop computationally efficient digital twins and new optimal control strategies for the virtual power plant (VPP) concept. Big data from experimental field demonstrations with dedicated metering, thousands of residential smart meter profiles, and large national human behavior surveys are employed to develop ultra-fast scalable residential load …
The Effect Of Participation In A Place-Based Engineering Learning Experience On Engineering Career Aspiration Of Nebraska’S Rural Students: A Mixed Method Study, Samereh Soleimani Babadi
The Effect Of Participation In A Place-Based Engineering Learning Experience On Engineering Career Aspiration Of Nebraska’S Rural Students: A Mixed Method Study, Samereh Soleimani Babadi
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Masters Project Reports
This study investigates the influence of a place-based, hands-on engineering learning experience on rural middle school students' engineering career aspirations, using Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) as a framework. Employing a mixed-methods approach, we explored how these localized learning experiences shape students' career goals through socio-cognitive factors such as self-efficacy, outcome expectations, goals, and interest. Quantitative analysis of pre- and post-activity surveys revealed significant increases in career aspiration scores, particularly among students from farming backgrounds and female students with initially lower expectations. Path analyses indicated that self-efficacy and interest were the strongest mediators between Place-based learning and engineering career aspirations. …

An Improved Table Method For Coded Target Identification With Application To Photogrammetric Analysis Of Soil Specimen During Triaxial Testing, Xiaolong Xia, Xiong Zhang, Sara Fayek, Zhaozheng Yin
An Improved Table Method For Coded Target Identification With Application To Photogrammetric Analysis Of Soil Specimen During Triaxial Testing, Xiaolong Xia, Xiong Zhang, Sara Fayek, Zhaozheng Yin
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Accurate and efficient recognition and identification of coded targets are of great importance in coded target-based photogrammetry. Recently, a deep learning-based method has been utilized to recognize the coded targets. Then, a table method has been developed to decode the coded targets, identify falsely identified coded targets, and recover missing coded targets. This method takes advantage of the geometric arrangement of the coded targets. In this paper, an improved table method has been developed to improve the coded targets recognition and identification results. Blob analysis, instead of deep learning, is utilized to recognize coded targets. Then, the RANSAC algorithm was …
