Vision-Based Multimodal Frameworks For Human Behavioral Analysis: Applications In Group Activity Understanding And Public Health, Naga Venkata Sai Raviteja Chappa
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Group Activity Recognition (GAR) has emerged as a crucial problem in computer vision, with wide-ranging applications in sports analysis, video surveillance, and social scene understanding. Unlike traditional action recognition focused on individuals, GAR requires understanding complex spatiotemporal relationships between multiple actors, their interactions, and the broader context in which these activities occur. This complexity introduces unique challenges, including the need for accurate actor localization, modeling of inter-actor dependencies, and understanding of temporal evolution in group behaviors. While recent advances have shown promise, existing approaches often rely heavily on extensive annotations such as ground-truth bounding boxes and action labels, creating significant …

The primary objective of this investigation is to devise a flexible microelectrode-based immunosensor capable of swiftly identifying E. coli O157:H7 cells without the need for incubation in a pure culture environment. In the development of the biosensor, the gold electrode (composed of 50% Au) underwent an initial coating process involving 2-aminoethanethiol/cysteamine, …
Wind-Induced Gravel Blow-Off: Experimental Investigations And Predictive Modeling For Resilient Roof Design, Md Safwan Ahsanullah
Wind-Induced Gravel Blow-Off: Experimental Investigations And Predictive Modeling For Resilient Roof Design, Md Safwan Ahsanullah
All Dissertations
Roof gravel blow-off during severe windstorms is a major hazard, leading to roof damage and significant downwind impacts. Understanding the initiation mechanisms for gravel blow-off is critical for improving building design and mitigating windborne debris risks. Existing experimental data on the wind speed required to initiate gravel blow-off have been collected from high-speed, full-scale tests at wind tunnels. While these tests form the basis of current design guidelines, they are expensive and can lack generalizability. As a result, rooftop gravel is frequently blown off at wind speeds below the design thresholds. This dissertation investigates the onset of rooftop gravel motion, …

Understanding The Role Of Ligamentous Constraint In Trapeziometacarpal Pathomechanics, Lizzie Walker
All Dissertations
The trapeziometacarpal (TMC) joint is the most common site for osteoarthritis (OA) in the upper limb. This joint is characterized by its wide range of motion and limited bony stability, making it susceptible to OA. The TMC joint relies mostly on ligaments and muscles for its static and dynamic stability, respectively. While importance of both volar and dorsal capsular TMC stabilizers has been demonstrated, the role of TMC ligamentous tissues in the development of thumb basal joint OA remains unclear.
The goal of this work was to identify morphometric and mechanical changes in key TMC ligament stabilizers, including the volar …
Grid Forming Inverters For Microgrid Operation Enhancement, Jan Westman
Grid Forming Inverters For Microgrid Operation Enhancement, Jan Westman
All Dissertations
Modern electric power systems are confronted with several major challenges including the increasing frequency and severity of weather events, aging infrastructure, high material costs, cyber-attacks, and substantial delays in global supply chains. Microgrids provide a solution to these challenges by insulating customers from the power outages occurring in their local distribution system. A microgrid is a small independent power system with its own power generation and energy storage resources that can supply customers’ electricity needs. When an outage occurs, a circuit breaker will disconnect the microgrid from the distribution system. Successful operation of the microgrid requires one or more devices …
The Effects Of Cigarette Smoke Extract On Osteoarthritis In A Primary Joint Tissue Explant Model, Emily Sawvell
The Effects Of Cigarette Smoke Extract On Osteoarthritis In A Primary Joint Tissue Explant Model, Emily Sawvell
All Dissertations
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common degenerative joint disease in the world with an economic burden of nearly $140 billion annually. Factors identified to increase the risk of developing OA include age, obesity, sex, race, genetics, and previous joint injury. However, one risk factor that has been scarcely studied in OA etiology is cigarette smoking. While some studies have reported smoking to protect against OA, increasing evidence suggests that cigarette smoking results in more severe and painful OA, increases the rate of developing OA, and reduces the efficacy of pain medications and arthritis-targeting therapies. Despite this, the impact of cigarette …

All Dissertations
Membranes are an advanced and mature water and wastewater treatment technology. Membrane fouling is a key difficulty for all membrane filtration processes, leading to significant attention in the literature over the years. A common problem in laboratory-scale membrane research is that the testing methods in the laboratory are often quite different than industrial applications due to the limitations of manual experimental setups. An automated membrane filtration apparatus was built in the lab to solve this problem by allowing long-term filtration, frequent backwash and CIP, and high-accuracy operation. The filtration system achieves different cleaning strategies for both theoretical research and practical …

Decomposition And Coordination For Multiobjective Optimization: A Framework And Methodology, Philip J. De Castro
All Dissertations
In this work, we consider finding Pareto efficient solutions for complex multiobjective optimization problems (MOPs). Complex MOPs are unique in the literature because they have many more objective functions than is typically considered. In fact, such complex MOPs will have 30+ objective functions. This large problem size presents computational and coginitive difficulties. Computationally, standard techniques for solving MOPs are often ineffective and cognitively it is difficult for a decision maker (DM) to handle all of the information provided in such a large problem. To address these challenges, we develop a decomposition and coordination framework. This framework will allow us to …

Decentralized Multi-Hop Federated Reinforcement Learning For Energy-Efficient And Secure Routing In Lorawan-Based Smart City Infrastructure, Harsha Sammangi, Aditya Jagatha, Jun Liu
Research & Publications
This paper proposes a decentralized hybrid framework that integrates Federated Learning (FL) and Reinforcement Learning (RL) to enable energy-efficient and secure multi-hop routing in LoRaWAN-based smart city networks. The method allows local model training at gateways and relay nodes, combining real-time routing decisions with privacy-preserving federated aggregation. Key metrics such as residual energy, link quality, and node trust levels are embedded into the reward function, and lightweight encryption plus differential privacy safeguard routing metadata. Simulation results demonstrate substantial gains in packet-delivery ratio, latency, network lifetime and resilience to adversarial attacks when compared to traditional routing protocols.

Micro-grids function to connect to power system power produced by the renewable energy resources. In islanded micro-grids, grid-forming units collaborate to maintain the micro-grids voltage and frequency by utilizing droop control technique that includes primary, secondary and tertiary levels. Secondary control intervenes to improve power sharing and restore voltage and frequency to their nominal levels. However, the conventional droop control applied to a grid with mismatched line parameters experiences a trade-off between reactive power sharing and voltage regulations. This paper applies real-time trajectory tracking convex optimization to ensure by communicating power sharing between units in a consensus topology. The optimization …

Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A liquid crystal (LC)-based sensing platform for the rapid optical detection of SARS-CoV-2 ' s spike protein's receptor binding domain (RBD) domain is introduced. This platform utilizes a thermotropic LC, hosted on metal-cation decorated substrates, onto which the spike protein can competitively bind. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations guide the experiments that reveal a homeotropic-to-planar transition in the LCs upon exposure to SARS-CoV-2 spike-decorated yeast, providing a basis for sensitive virus detection. The sensor's reversibility/specificity is confirmed through antibody-induced orientation recovery of the LCs initial orientation. Strikingly, the sensor can detect approximate to 2000 copies of the spike protein per …

Influence Of Boundary Conditions And Blood Rheology On Indices Of Wall Shear Stress From Ivus-Based Patient-Specific Stented Coronary Artery Simulations, R. Patrick Mccarthy, Peter J. Mason, David S. Marks, John F. Ladisa Jr.
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The long-term clinical efficacy of coronary stents is limited by restenosis. Coronary stenting results in altered arterial geometry, local blood flow patterns, and wall shear stress (WSS), all of which can influence restenosis. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations employ assumptions about blood properties and boundary conditions, which also influence WSS alterations from stenting. Our objective was to evaluate three common assumptions applied with stented coronary artery CFD simulations (inlet velocity profile, outlet boundary conditions, and viscosity) to provide insight for future studies. A patient-specific right coronary artery was reconstructed from intravascular ultrasound and computed tomography imaging. Time-averaged WSS (TAWSS) and …

Background
Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) presents significant treatment challenges, particularly in cases unrelated to human papillomavirus (HPV). The chemokine receptor CXCR4, interacting with its ligand CXCL12, plays a crucial role in tumor proliferation, metastasis, and treatment resistance. This study explores the therapeutic potential of engineered monomeric and dimerized CXCL12 variants (CXCL121 and CXCL122, respectively) in HNSCC and evaluates potential additive effects when combined with radiation therapy.
Methods
Clinical HNSCC biopsies were evaluated for CXCR4 expression in both previously untreated and radiorecurrent disease. HNSCC cell lines were then treated with combinations of CXCL12 variants and radiotherapy and interrogated …

Involvement Of Long Non-Coding Rna (Lncrna) Malat1 In Shear Stress Regulated Adipocyte Differentiation, Justin Caron, Marjan Ghanbariabdolmaleki, Madison Marino, Chong Qiu, Bo Wang, Michael Mak, Shue Wang
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Adipocyte differentiation plays an important role in bone remodeling due to secretory factors that can directly modulate osteoblast and osteoclast, thus affecting overall bone mass and skeletal integrity. Excessive adipocyte differentiation within the bone marrow microenvironment can lead to decreased bone mass, eventually causing osteoporosis. The mechanical microenvironment of bone marrow, including fluid shear, maintains the balance of adipocyte and osteoblast differentiation during bone remodeling. However, how mechanical cues interact with long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) and regulate adipocyte differentiation remains unexplored. In this study, we investigated the mechanosensitive role of lncRNA MALAT1 during mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) adipocyte differentiation. By …
The Little Diagram That Could: Geometric Properties And Statistical Applications Of Persistence Diagrams In Topological Data Analysis, Eugene Kler
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Topological Data Analysis (TDA) is a collection of techniques for data analysis that leverages topological invariants of spaces formed from data points. These methods excel at extracting useful information from noisy or sparse data, making them attractive to many mathematicians, statisticians, and scientists. In this thesis, we explore TDA on three fronts: algebraic foundations, statistical applications, and metric properties. Throughout, the central object of study is the Persistence Diagram (PD), a summary of the changes in homology that occur as one builds simplicial complexes from the data by increasing a parameter.
A Neuroimmune Circuit Mediates Chemo Brain Pathology, Daniel Ahmadi
A Neuroimmune Circuit Mediates Chemo Brain Pathology, Daniel Ahmadi
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Chemotherapeutic agents, while effective in targeting malignant tumors, often reduce the patients’ quality of life by inducing fatigue, pain, and motivational deficits. These symptoms are collectively referred to as “chemo brain.” The mechanisms underlying these adverse effects, and specifically whether fatigue and motivational impairments share a common etiology, remain poorly understood. The neural–immune substrates of these symptoms remain obscure, in part because standard preclinical regimens either bypass key systemic signals or introduce local toxicity confounds. Here, I establish and validate a three‑day, low‑dose intravenous cisplatin protocol that avoids peritoneal inflammation and severe renal injury yet produces robust, reversible fatigue and …

Site-specific LiDAR data was used to create a bare earth terrain model, and rockfall boulders were geolocated and measured to be used as inputs into rockfall models. The slope below the cliff face was divided into four distinct slope zones, each with …
Development And Application Of Computational Tools For Organic Molecular Structure Prediction From Small Molecule Crystal Structure Determination To Polymer Persistence Length, Madilyn E. Paul
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation utilized two areas of computational simulations for organic molecular structure prediction. First, we investigate the possible polymorphism of both barbituric acid dihydrate (BTADH) and violuric acid monohydrate (VAMH) using density functional theory. Crystalline structures that exhibit polymorphism have an increased level of uncertainty in predicting their chemical and physical properties. BTADH was previously thought to undergo a subtle phase transition from P21/n to planar Pnma at 217 K. We conclude that barbituric acid dihydrate exhibits crystalline disorder in which the molecules are crystallized in a non-merohedrally twinned P21/n configuration below …
Reproducible Infrastructure For Modeling Thermoplastic Polymer Fusion Welding, Chris D. Jones
Reproducible Infrastructure For Modeling Thermoplastic Polymer Fusion Welding, Chris D. Jones
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Aircraft materials must balance the demands of being light-weight and fuel efficient with being safe, durable, and strong. Carbon-fiber reinforced polymer composites are able to meet both of these requirements, and as a result, they are being utilized more and more in aircraft manufacturing. Thermoset polymers are typically used as the matrix material in these composites; however, thermoset polymers require long curing times in large autoclave ovens in order to form chemical cross-links, which once present, cannot be melted upon further heating. As a result, joining smaller thermoset composite parts together to build larger structures requires using mechanical fasteners, which …

Minimizing Secondary Spinal Cord Injuries With Hypertonic Saline., Francisco A. Cortez-Thomas
Minimizing Secondary Spinal Cord Injuries With Hypertonic Saline., Francisco A. Cortez-Thomas
Master of Engineering Theses
Spinal cord injury (SCI) disrupts white matter, causing periaxonal swelling, axonal degeneration, and impaired function. To examine vascular edema’s role, we developed a 3Dprinted dual-compartment imaging chamber to mimic and manipulate interstitial and vascular fluid dynamics in real time. We hypothesized that hypertonic saline (HTS) in the "vascular" chamber would osmotically shift fluid from the periaxonal space and preserve myelinated fibers after SCI. Using two-photon excitation microscopy, we imaged myelin and axons ex vivo in Thy1YFP+ transgenic mice following C5 contusive SCI and assessed three clinically relevant HTS concentrations versus normal saline for their effectiveness in mitigating periaxonal swelling …
